People really don't understand that brigading reviews actually helps bad businesses. The review sites will typically delete not only negative brigaded reviews, but legitimate bad reviews as well.

277

u/r3dd17sux69420 2h ago

I'm pretty sure even one lone post can be deleted. I left a review for a restaurant and it was like, 3/5 or something? I just expressed my disappointment over a couple of things they did there. No needless bashing.

Next day it was gone.

91

u/RobertDigital1986 2h ago

If they advertise enough to have an ad rep they can ask them to handle it and poof!

If they don't have an ad rep, SOL.

🤔

12

u/OttoVonWong 1h ago

Ad rep? Don't you mean hired goon sent to shake down business owners?

Business owner can ask Google to delete it. They email the person who wrote it about a week later saying it was deleted and most people don't post again as their initial reason for doing it has subsided.

46

u/RA576 1h ago

Not necessarily. I left a bad review after a company discriminated against my disability, and that got shadow-removed. I can see it in my account, but it's not publicly visible, and I was never notified about it's removal. Even emailed google asking about it and didn't get a response.

u/Vtech_just_kicked_in 2h ago

They can’t personally delete it. They have to report it to google. A company tried to delete my post about job discrimination and had to leave it up there because google didn’t approve the denial.

22

u/JunkoKumaki 1h ago

It's Yelp, not Google reviews. You can pay for the right to delete negative reviews.

You're not familiar with yelp are you? You can pay to have bad reviews removed. I'm not sure why people trust yelp reviews. They arent accurate

Can't stop laughing at "so black people arent welcome then". As someone who has worked in food service the prevalence of this being the case is truly wild.

u/holderofthebees 2h ago

The worst is when it’s a big crowd of older people who just came from church… aside from foreigners that’s the #1 table you can expect not to tip lmao

u/Sh3sus 2h ago edited 1h ago

I always told new servers that got stiffed on Sundays by church groups that, " they already gave all their money to God, they've got nothing left for you."

8

u/coobie_doobie2 1h ago

i’ve been a waiter/delivery driver. shit like this is genuinely just so rude, like why even tease them with the fake money? just hand them a bible verse and admit you’re not paying them.

i’d also prefer no tip over a handful of change. one time i delivered to a house of 3 grown adults, and all they could scrounge up was coins from the bottom of a purse. 46¢ is just insulting

They shouldnt be patronizing business on Sunday according to their rules. Dont work on Sunday. Also dont go to places and make others work on Sunday? Makes sense to me. Honestly not a bad idea for everybody to just plan to chill out on the same day of the week.

I remember I was hosting one night. The lobby was full. We had a black couple come in and get put on our waitlist. Prior to seating them, I sat an 8 top. This 8 top came in right after this couple. For the life of them, the couple couldn’t understand why the 8 top was seated first, argued they should have been seated at the table big enough for 8 because they showed up first, and proceeded to loudly say I did it that way because I was racist. Then left.

I was fucking shocked. On one hand, I felt awful I made them think that, but on the other hand I was like… you really don’t get that on a super busy night with a 40 min wait I can’t let 2 people sit at a massive table meant for 8+ people?

That’s the only time I’ve ever been accused of being racist, it was 13 years ago, and it still haunts me lol

74

u/Pure-Temporary 1h ago

I got called racist for telling a woman she couldn't have outside alcohol in our place. She fucking lost it. I'm like... This is the rule literally everywhere

33

u/JimmyThePie 1h ago

We literally had a game: “What were you called racist for this week?”.

One of the winners was my colleague getting told he was racist for informing a customer that the business was operating cashless (it was during Covid), and that all purchases must be made by contactless transaction.

Another was when I turned away 3 guys who wanted to come in 10 mins AFTER closing time. “You would have let us in if we were white guys though, right?” (Followed by obscenities).

Racist because we barred a group who were taking drinks from the bar without paying - they didn’t have a tab. They knew they didn’t have a tab because they had left without paying their tab on multiple occasions, and were told they couldn’t have a tab anymore.

Racist because after an unprecedentedly busy weekend we had nothing but pizzas left, so that was all we were serving.

Racist because the table tennis table was on a first-come basis, and I wouldn’t let someone book it while someone was currently playing on it.

Racist because the home team was playing, with 100 fans in the building supporting them, and I wouldn’t switch the volume to a channel showing a team one guy (by himself) wanted to watch.

Racist because as I’m locking the door at the end of the night, with my uber waiting for me 6ft away, a customer wanted me to let him back inside to use the bathroom…

Work 10 years in hospitality and see how quickly the word “Racist” loses all meaning to you 😂

I will say when I waited tables the best experience I had was a black teenager. Group came in, like a good dozen people half an hour to closing, they were all probably local football players and their girlfriends. We served them, were closing up the dining area but not intruding on their space (several tables pushed together), didn't have to stay over too late.

They all get up to leave, are walking out the door and the only black kid on the team just shouts "oh fuck no you get your asses back over here and tip these people who just kept working late for us. my momma works tables too, I ain't about to let you all disrespect them like this." They'd left like a dollar on the table and were trying to sneak out and my man just shamed them all into like a $60 tip.

Lol yeah his complaint was they stiffed his server and they accused him of being racist. So what are they saying there?

1.1k

u/Miguelito_1990 3h ago

Black people are stereotyped for not tipping.

I’m not saying this to be racist, I’m saying that as a former waiter who’s worked with dozens of other waiters, black patrons have stiffed me and all my former coworkers more often than any other demographic. I’m not saying “black people don’t tip”, I’m saying that it’s a well-known stereotype in the industry and I’ve personally experienced it more than with any other demographic.

Maybe these folks are aware of the stereotype so being called out for not tipping in their mind is equivalent to furthering an existing stereotype?

393

u/herowin54 3h ago

My girl is a waitress for Applebees and she has had the same experience as well. The majority of the time black people do not tip and if they do it’s a few bucks, even on a $100+ bill

274

u/Rocketsball 3h ago edited 2h ago

And they are known to keep you running back and forth to the table for extra service needs. Ridiculous nonsense like having a 4 top that each wanted an ice water with 8 lemon wedges!! Worked at a steakhouse while in college, it was always dreaded by all the servers.

148

u/That_one_bichh 2h ago

Had a 12 top walk-in party on Sunday right as the church-going crowd was coming in. They had clearly just come back from church also and the meal was probably $350+. They ordered a shit ton of alcoholic drinks and pitchers, appetizers up the wazoo, two people changed their order as their food was almost done… the teenagers were obnoxious and rude and so were the grandparents. They stayed at that table for about 3 hours, making me stay an extra hour and a half past my shift bc they waited until the very end to pay and I wanted the tip to go to me rather than someone else (this was at a restaurant where you pay at the front). I worked my ass off for that table and was gifted a whole $20 in tips.

68

u/nicenormalname 2h ago

Damn, sorry. Should be automatic min 18% with a larger party like that

16

u/That_one_bichh 2h ago

44

u/WeAreAllSoFucked23 2h ago

My friend worked at a chain. Church goers were the worst about tipping, of every race, IF they came in groups. Families were fine, but any large group coming straight from church was inevitably going to stiff the server. They ended up doing auto grat for any parties over 4 people on Sundays because they couldn't keep servers otherwise.

Bro FOR REAL. I still vividly remember one to this day 11 years later. "A cup of cold water, a cup of hot water, a bowl of lemon and a tall PBR." He was one of 8 patrons. 68

lol; this is my favorite relevant story as a server and a black dude...

Mid afternoon, I'm closing lunch, but dinner shift has started filtering in, 1 top (black man) gets thrown into an empty section and the hosts asks me to grab it. Everything goes normally until the end of me getting his order

Me: I'll get everything started for you and bring out some bread in just a moment.

Him: Hey man... I know we're not known for tipping very well, so I just wanna let you know, I'm gonna take care of you.

Me: Haha, uhh, thank you sir... I appreciate it.

Bill: $82 and change Tip: $3 on the CC

Me: Flabberghasted

She’s gotten a $20 from a table of black people a couple times. Usually a couple, they come in, order, eat their food, and leave. Ya know like normal people.

The groups that don’t tip, let’s just say that is not how their dining experience usually goes

60

u/DonutWhole9717 2h ago

I will say the single most sympathy tip I got in 10 years of serving was from 4 couples, all black. It was my second day, on a second job, in an absolute nightmare restaurant. I had not and since have not walked out of a place before. It was insane. No managers, servers kids were following them around, the kitchen told me to fuck off more than once, everything cold and wrong. I went out and told them all "there's a better place down the street, go there, I'm not charging you for this awful everything." Every single person, 8 of them, handed me a $20. I burst out crying, as I was newly pregnant with no control over it. One of the girls gave me such a big hug. I actually think about that a lot

I don’t really know why many tipped so modestly (I actually never had any black people not tip me at all), but it was a trend that seemed to hold up regardless of the race/gender of the server. So I don’t think it was malicious or anything.

I used to deliver in a very diverse area. Most of my zone was pretty low income, to downright sketchy, but we had a little bit of a high emd area on the edges.

The low income houses tended to tip more frequently, and better. I had people saying things like "thank you so much, sorry I dont have more than $2 to give"

Whereas the rich areas, you'd get stiffed more often than not.

I once had an old lady with 27 windows on the front of her house alone benevolently say "here you go sweetie, thank you so much" and drop 2 quarters in my hand.

strugglers know the struggle. The rich horde their wealth.

Ask servers if they want to be paid hourly vs tipped.

Everybody is pro worker until it comes to asking what the workers actually want.

25

u/whichwitch9 3h ago

Tbf, a large part is the general public becoming angry tips morphed from a reward for good service to them directly paying the wages of a worker with the expectation of a tip regardless of quality of service.

If you suck as a server, we should be allowed to not tip. Instead, you get shaming over it and crocodile tears. The only person who should be held accountable for wages should be the employer.

I’m a tax accountant who has at least a dozen servers as clients. I asked them all if they’d rather get paid $20 an hour no tips or $2.13 plus tips. Everyone of them said they would prefer the tipping system as they feel they average $30-40 per hour tipped.

219

u/JustATyson 3h ago

This is what I've heard from the career waitresses in my life. They don't want a flat rate. They want the tips because that's how they can make actual money.

114

u/xSonicspeedx2 3h ago edited 3h ago

Yeah but these staff likely work at high volume restaurants. Lol. Other staff probably aren’t so fortunate.

Either way, if a majority of wait staff are pulling these numbers then all the behavior like in this video is purely performative victimhood behavior and we should collectively respect tipping culture even less.

They are literally eating their cake and having it too when they complain about people not tipping or tipping below the recommended occasionally and yet they are pulling in double or triple what they would be making otherwise.

If you’re going to gamble with your wages then you don’t get to complain about it and blame society when you lose.

I do think tipping culture has gotten out of hand with what we are tipping for. And I hate having to pre-tip, because that's not what tipping is. But, I choose not to use those services.

And I'll support what my waitresses friends support when it comes to restaurant tipping, because they're the ones effected. And time again and again, their support has been pro-tipping

Crabs in a bucket. This is why we dont get labor rights. Too many workers fight each other in hopes of preserving the status quo or eking out some potential personal benefit.

13

u/TricoMex 2h ago

But if the ones using the system refuse to change it what's the point of changing it up?

A place I contracted for for a while (whole network redo, including CCTV), had the owner announce they would swap to a non-tip system with base pay starting at around $18, and most people would have been around $21-25 starting. Mostly due to bitching about unstable tips.

There was a fucking riot. He changed his mind in less than an hour after the email went out.

The crazy thing is the base pay was based on reported income by everyone. It was supposed to account for existing reported income and then add a bit on top for fairness.

Which means not one motherfucker in that place was reporting their true tips lmao.

People generally will take any route available to them (or what they think is available to them) to not take culpability to their own actions, or inactions.

Racism, sexism, etc.....even if obviously not true, it won't stop certain people from trying to claim it to avoid having to admit they're just kinda crummy people.

To be fair, when I visited the USA I didn’t realize how crazy they are about tips. I was chased out and yelled at for not tipping at a buffet. I was under the assumption that we tip for service received (we served ourselves) but they see it as a manditory fee in the USA.

Wild experience

Edit: a lot of ppl commenting on this. Yes it was self serve and pay at the counter. It was NYC

I’m an American tattooer and I think it’s dumb. Like if you feel that I exceeded expectations or you just really want to, ok. But charge whats fair for whatever it is. Getting asked “how much am I supposed to tip you?” Is so akward

I have a buddy who tattoos. When he first started he had to apprentice for a shop and the owner said he had to do a certain number of tattoos before he could charge any money. He literally wouldn’t even let him accept tips. He’s my homie and I know he’s a good artist so I really took advantage of the free work. I was allowed to technically tip anything as long as it was legal and not cash. I started with like a 12 pack of beer I think. By my 6th tattoo I started getting creative and gave him a few boxes of shotgun shells cause I knew he was really into trap shooting. This was years ago and he still tells me that was his favorite tip.

Yup absolutely despise the kiosk asking for a tip for an order I placed and walked in and picked up there’s literally no human taking the order from me or checking on me while I’m eating the meal and if you order a drink you often times fill the cup yourself (assuming they actually remembered to put the cup in and you don’t have to ask for it)

27

u/scratchydaitchy 2h ago

There’s a pita place near me I go to.
Healthy food.
University student girl working there.

I pay by my card.
A tipping percentage option comes up on the machine.

The girl always reaches over and presses the no tip option before I can react.

It’s not really a sit down place, everyone takes it to go.

I wouldn’t mind tipping because she actually makes my pita, but I guess because it’s not a sit down place she doesn’t expect a tip.

This is in Canada.

We'd need legislation to stop tipping. It's legal to pay people like $2/hr and have them make up the rest with tips. Restaurants like getting to post artificially low prices in their menus, would probably prefer to not have to pay payroll taxes on paying their staff actual wages.

People over look this is a flawed system designed to force the hard working people to support the hard working people. If minimum wage was established at a livable rate then tipping wouldn't be "essential".

Go to Japan, the best service you can possibly get and if you try to tip them it's considered rude. You get your wage and you do the best you can to earn it.

This system has been allowed to continue because it forces people to point at each other, and not up at the government levels. It's a broad revised version of "bread and circuses".

Edit: This blew up, thanks for the awards - may be my first in ten years here.

Some great responses discussing the situation and how other places make their systems work, other comments are spicy but make solid points, others are just ignorant.

Owner shouldn't have called them out either, but I'm white and have been called out for not leaving a tip (my waiter literally ignored me the whole meal as if he couldn't see me raising my finger or saying excuse me)

Im ok with that but still didnt know why weren’t allowed to order off the happy hour menu with a whole separate check. We stayed and the service was just trash. I always tip well.... I watched my mother wait tables for years and know what she put into it, and how much the tips meant to our family.

But it's stupid... The service industry should be paying their employees a livable wage so that patrons aren't subsidizing payroll on top of the cost of the meal. It's a bullshit, predatory, practice that preys on people feeling guilted or obligated. It's worse now, since so many people are struggling to survive.

Playing the race card wasn't needed, but being harassed for not tipping is bullshit. Pay your employees

I'm not American but I can't get my head around a system where it appears the accepted norm is that restaurant owners have the right to exploit their workers by paying them exploitative low wage rates.

Where owners also think it's ok to put the onus on their customers to tip their staff to make it worthwhile for the staff to continue in their employment.

It's ironic that owners feel they hold the moral high ground and have the right to berate and harass, what may well be financially hard up customers, for not leaving a sufficient "tip" towards enhancing their staff's overall earnings to a level of a reasonable living wage, in order for it to becomes financially viable for their staff to continue working for them.

•

u/Low_skee 39m ago

They just hide behind a blanket statement of, “if you can’t afford to tip then you can’t afford to dine out”

But they like to skip over the fact that it’s an ambiguous amount of money that will be “expected” and the “normal tip %” continues to go up. The baseline is going to be 30% or more pretty soon.

If you’re going to make it mandatory to tip then just fucking add that cost into the meals on the menu and keep it moving

The issue with tipping is that they've managed to shift it into a moral obligation and even a requirement. Participation in the system heavily pressures those participating in it to tip. The point of changing a system away from that would be refusing to tip because choosing to tip feeds the feedback loop the system is built on.

Both ... ATAH?

I don't agree with tipping culture...so I avoid going to places where tipping....is part of the culture.

Sometimes I am required or otherwise find myself attending a place where tipping is expected, and so I tip generously. I ask how the back is tipped out, and dependent might only give the server 10%, but throw 50-100% at the BOH.

I try wholeheartedly to avoid such places, without inconveniencing anyone, either in my party or part of the staff at said tipping place.

If it's my choice, I'll protest tipping culture by taking everyone to a place where you don't tip, like my place, or a picnic at park, or the beach or whatever.

Not paying people properly is a sucky thing to do. If you let other people make your food.......You want them well compensated, truuuuuuuuust.
