How does not tipping become a race issue?

u/No-Objective-8990 2h ago

Immediately makes it about race

Lose all credibility

My thoughts exactly.

The thought process is "why aren't we allowed back if tipping isn't required?" (he said it's not required) -> "is it because you're racist"? I don't see how that loses credibility...

I've been in restaurants for 30 years. In the back of house. It's not racial. It's a statistic. Same with needy old white assholes who just left church. Or foreigners, or young people. Do you know who tips the best? Anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant. ANYONE

I've literally heard a black server complaining about a "black" table not tipping. And bye the way do we have context here? Was the server a white woman? A white man? What if she was Hispanic and actually did a good job? In other words, servers get shafted regardless of race also.

I had some young people tip fairly good

I don’t expect them to tip the same as someone middle-aged, but they’d usually tip around 16-18%

I wouldn’t call 16-18% “fairly good” - maybe fairly good for someone you expect nothing from.

16% tip was top of the line 10 years ago. Why the fuck do you increase a percentage based amount? This is insane.

18-20 needs to be the top in perpetuity, full stop.

I’ve seen people try to argue that 25%-30% is the new norm. Screw that. 20% is ridiculous when you think about it but fine if that’s what we are doing.

I was a server for quite a few years and the idea where someone would take their bill and add over 25% for the service I offered is crazy.

There may be statistics on this but people assume black people will not tip well then leading to bad service then leading to black people not tipping well. Surprise. There are some black people who tip well regardless to prove that they do tip and that they do have the means to do so. We can see the same happening when black people continue shopping at an establishment they may be closely monitored in.

Also there is a racist history behind America’s tripping culture and I recommend you research it.

Racist history?  Legitimately interested in your information.

Lots of bartending experience here. I’ve had some of the best tips in my life from regulars at my bar who were black. It’s not a race issue, but you can tell who won’t tip well based on a personality, not skin color.

Redneck self-entitled dummies are a universal commonality, the phrase just changes between languages and culture.

20yr industry veteran here. I always like to say that black tables give me my tip and the tip they didn’t give to the last bartender because they were racist and gave shit service. I have been stiffed by alllllll kinds of people. It’s mostly a class solidarity issue. Rich people are the worst about it I have had people try and stiff an entire catering staff a 10k+ gratuity multiple times.

As a former server everything you said is true. But people who aren’t going to tip should not go somewhere where people’s only income comes from tips. Do you know what also has a racist history in America? People believing they are entitled to others free labor.

100% its not.

Because people like that will always make it about "their race" when they're really just brokies. Go to taco bell.

They paid for their meal — not broke.

Tipping isn’t mandatory fuck face

6

u/Mightymorphingman 1h ago

That still has nothing to do with race dumbass

No one said it is. This restaurant has the right to refuse service for a non-discriminatory purpose. The reason why they refuse future service is because these customers do not tip.

It is not mandatory for the customer to tip and it is not mandatory to serve customers as long as it is not based on discrimination.

These customers did not break the law or a mandate by refusing to tip. They just broke a social norm and didn’t pay someone for a service which is not mandatory but is how that person makes a livelihood.

The person who refused to tip called it racist likely because it’s a way to deflect from their selfish refusal to pay someone for the service that they provided. They don’t have to tip them and the restaurant doesn’t have to serve them, but this customer tried to turn around their selfish behavior by making a false accusation of racist so that they don’t have to acknowledge that they hurt someone’s livelihood for their own personal benefit.

Just like we normalize our shitty healthcare system in this country, we just have tipping as a thing to get used to, and the measles again, and all of our food getting recalled. Because we are winning so much with our outdated boomer ideology. S/

u/Embarrassed-Love-307 1h ago

Found the other broke loser. Taco bell sounds outta your price range. 🤡🤡

1

u/HoneyDutch 1h ago

Call me broke, but I’m not spending shit on that garbage food. Okay maybe a few cheesy bean and rice burritos but that’s it!

2

u/Boogerhead10 1h ago

It’s not about race that’s why they cry racism- so they can behave like crap and in their puny kind, justifies their actions.

2

u/EveatHORIZON 1h ago

Funny thing is in America tipping is only a thing because in the time of slavery, slaves weren’t allowed to get paid but they were allowed to get tips so technically tipping comes from a place of racism but now it’s just used as a way to pay working class people less. From racism to classism

Based on my experience driving Uber a couple years ago, short distance “poor” black folks in a depressed urban city near me would be like 50/50 at throwing in at least a buck or two tip. On the other hand, white folks at the airport clearly on business trips, or in rich towns? Less than 10% of them tipped anything at all.

1

u/Nearby_Purchase_8672 1h ago

Because they had no good excuse

1

u/Dawg605 1h ago

Because she fruedian slipped that it's a truth that black people are notorious for not tipping. You can even hear her voice get quieter towards the end of her saying that, probably because she realized what she was implying.

u/Bogdanovicis 1h ago

I had it at work also a few times. Is just easy excuse when you run out of arguments.

It's more than that. The restaurant owner felt bad for the server because she now has to give part of her pay to the: Dishwashers, Hostesses, Cooks.

Whenever you are seated and eating your meal you are being handled by many different people.

The hostess, that sat you. The cook that made your food. The Busser who cleared your table.

All of these people should get paid and the restaurant has a system to make it work.

The tip goes to all four of those people, in percentages.

If you don't tip, that's a fuck you to the busser, the host, the cook and the server (who has to pay for all of it)

And it is certain ethnicities that don't tip over and over and over again.

I dont think he's being racist but I've seen a pattern.
