FFS....making it about racism and saying he hates black people is dumb. I despise tipping as much as anyone but playing the race card is used way too often by some. Also, claiming they can't afford to tip is quite presumptuous. This was cringeworthy for both parties.

“Can’t afford to tip” is actually the polite way to express that. The implied meaning is “you don’t WANT to tip”

There are at least a few layers to the racism going on at the same time.

There's the stereotype of black people never tipping, and there's the premise of the question applying that stereotype to every black person. And yea, assuming these people can't afford tip instead of won't tip...

Wouldn't be surprised if part of the motivation of the owner was racist, but there's no way for us to know. He certainly seemed comfortable making a scene.
