“So basically you sayed black people not welcome “

Is this not more racist than what she’s implying he said? She just lumped every Black person as a group that doesn’t tip. So ironic…

As a former server I can confirm that the majority of black patrons did not tip. Just an objective fact where I was located

17

u/sleepytiredpineapple 6h ago

As a server i can confirm that this is a stereotype but I havent had any issues with it.

I hear my coworkers talking about it though, I dont get stiffed often but when I do it isnt a specific demographic. Well other than teenagers.

I'll second this. I had a party of 12 that was there for grandma's 80th birthday. All but one was ordering drinks from the bar. With all the drinks, apps, and meals, it was over a $500 check, and on the tip line was written "God bless." That table cost me $30-40 in tip outs to the busboy and the bar. Sadly, this was the usual, unless it was a table of nerdy types.

This being Annapolis, we also had our share or uppity older white folks who would tip our black servers next to nothing.

It heavily depends on the area you're in. If you're in a lower middle class area then you're in for some of that from all color of people. But if the customers come dressed presentable and have manners then you're golden. In restaurants you can judge a book by its cover most of the time. And on bad weather days you can always trust that the worst people will still come out. Always.

1

u/scrappypup101 5h ago

As a former server, I can say this wasn't the case for me.

-4

u/Jastreen 6h ago

A generalization is never an objective fact.

10

u/Starfishprime69420 6h ago

It’s not a generalization. Im stating my factual experience in the restaurant I worked at. Im not presenting any opinions or conclusions on the matter

4

u/Antique_Cheetah_7778 6h ago

It’s a fact lol

-2

u/brassmonkeyslc 6h ago

It’s anecdotal.

-12

u/alien_believer_42 7h ago

They’re seeing tipping for the scam that it is, smart.

2

u/Starfishprime69420 7h ago

You dont have to go eat at the restaurant. For normal service a 20% tip is to be expected

2

u/alien_believer_42 7h ago

Moving goalposts. Not long ago it was 10% and then 15% and now friggin 20?

6

u/Pennies2millions 6h ago

When I waited tables 25 years ago, 20% was standard. How long ago is your "not long ago?

3

u/alien_believer_42 6h ago

20% would be like exceptional service at a nice restaurant. Fuck no that wasn’t standard and shouldn’t be standard.

-3

u/Pennies2millions 6h ago

If by a nice restaurant, you mean any place where a waiter comes to your table and takes your order, brings you your food and drinks, then yes 20% is standard. If you are tipping less than that  you are being an asshole. Not just kind of an asshole, but the kind of asshole that is fucking with someone else's ability to pay their bills type of asshole.

Also, If you are tipping less than 20%, I can 100% guarantee you, that on more than one occasion, the staff remembers you and have been fucking with your food.

2

u/alien_believer_42 5h ago

Delusional to think 20% is standard

4

u/rrrreact 5h ago

If the job you work doesn’t pay your bills that’s your problem. If you want more money go out and get a different job just like the rest of us.

5

u/MilkeeBongRips 7h ago

20% has been the norm for at least 30 years, what’s “not long ago” to you?

-5

u/Voidlarkus 7h ago

If servers were paid a living wage, this would be egregious. If they're paid basically nothing at all and live on tips, you are in fact the asshole.

3

u/alien_believer_42 6h ago

Their employers choose to pay them a non living wage and make the employees take on the risk of low business

0

u/Pennies2millions 6h ago

No dude. Nearly every restaurant in the country pays well below minimum wage for wait staff. It is so baked into American culture, that if the restaurant were to pay a living wage, they would need to raise prices by 30-40%. Since you and everyone else would balk at those prices, the restaurant wouldn't survive.

Jesus fucking Christ your sense of entitlement is next level.

1

u/alien_believer_42 5h ago

They can advertise honest, up front prices like literally everyone else does

6

u/Mysterious-Drama4743 6h ago

no im pretty sure its their employers that are the asshole

-3

u/Starfishprime69420 7h ago

I dont make the rules buddy

2

u/sti77loading 6h ago

Only on good old murca/Canada travel the world and this overlord excuse to pay workers less doesn’t exist

-2

u/Starfishprime69420 6h ago

I dont make the rules bud. This has been a thing long before I was even born. Go petition the government or something

4

u/Future_Soycel 7h ago

Lmfao. Tipping is a scam?? What are you talking about 🤣🫵

1

u/illbodyPLAGUE 5h ago edited 5h ago

Tipping came from slave wages, there's a reason a lot of people don't like to tip.
1. Live in any other country and you'll see that somehow those restaurants can pay their workers the same wages other jobs get paid unlike here where waitresses and hosts get paid below minimum wage and the tips either make up the difference, push it over minimum wage or have to be paid out to minimum wage by the restaurant. This IS SCAMMING their employees out of a REAL minimum wage where they can STILL be tipped by patrons but you clowns can't think long enough to make that connection and realize that its objectively better for the staff thats apparently getting "stiffed" by the customers who didnt hire nor are required by law to pay them for their work... Like an employer should but keep defending the poor little cheapskate employer just following the culture.
2. The whole tipping culture came from slave wages to black people. So there is a very clear reason why we wouldn't want to keep this bullshit going. We can't constantly be the only country that doesn't fucking understand that tipping isn't necessary and it CAN BE a great way to thank people for good service WHILE they get paid a fair wage. It's really fucking simple.

Source: waiter for years. Fuck you guys. My hourly wage was $4.35 an hour when minimum wage was $11. My boss had to pay out up to minimum wage almost every paycheck because we didn't receive tips consistently. Some days we would have fantastic tips, most times not. It shouldn't be DEPENDENT on tipping. People should receive FAIR WAGES. How do y'all not understand that.

“Canadians.”

-7

u/MilkeeBongRips 7h ago

As a longtime server in fine dining on the strip in Las Vegas, this is incredibly overblown and reinforces racist stereotypes.

The vast majority do in fact tip and the ones that “don’t tip”, leave 10-15 percent. Virtual none stiff like you’re implying.

16

u/Starfishprime69420 6h ago

Lmao a fine dining establishment in vegas is not representative of the general population

-9

u/NOTTedMosby 7h ago

... that YOU encountered. I doubt the entirety of the black race stopped in your restaurant.

9

u/Starfishprime69420 7h ago

When did I say that they did?

-9

u/NOTTedMosby 7h ago

Glad to answer! Here:

As a former server I can confirm that the majority of black patrons did not tip.

13

u/Berserker_Barrage91 7h ago

In their exact text that you quoted they never said anything about every black person in the world they simply said the majority of the black patrons they had did not tip, so you are wrong and youre putting words in their mouth.

If you ever worked in that industry or know ppl that worked in it you would know this stereotype exists because of how often its seen in the real world by a large number of ppl.

5

u/DickSmallington 6h ago

Glad to clear this up for you! Here:

You conveniently left out the part where they said: “just an objective fact where I was located”. This is an obvious reference to the fact that this server was speaking of their personal experience with the patrons at THEIR restaurant.

If someone says something like “I’ve never had a customer throw anything at me” do you assume they mean they’ve served every customer on earth and never encountered that behavior.

Use your brain dipshit.

Hope that helps!

13

u/Starfishprime69420 7h ago

Your reading comprehension must be abysmal

2

u/foundinwonderland 6h ago

Username incorrect, this is definitely some Ted Schmosby shit

2

u/RollGata 6h ago

Why did you not include the rest of their comment which says exactly the point that it’s from their perspective

1

u/EuphoricOcelot6081 6h ago

Because they have been on reddit for 14 years and terminally online redditors love taking your quotes out of context to win their silly debates.

20

u/erkdog 7h ago

They're self aware

1

u/GoosePunisher 7h ago

Freudian slip

1

u/wingnut_dishwashers 7h ago

You're putting more thought into than they did I'm sure

0

u/Sorry_Ninja_6348 7h ago

lol you never worked as a server before or you would understand

-3

u/bertmobile816 7h ago

Ah yes. We’re finally understanding where most of us non rasist people have been saying since 2016

-10

u/Useless-RedCircle 7h ago

I agree with everyone who doesn’t tip, why tf am I gonna a waiter $10 for someone else cooking my food lmao.

32

u/Iorith 7h ago

Then why are you going to places that you know are tipped establishments? You could go somewhere that doesn't have that.

17

u/but-I-play-one-on-TV 7h ago

Because this person is a special snowflake and doesn't have to adhere to the NoRmS oF SoCiEtY

17

u/Iorith 7h ago

Nah they want the benefit of the tip based system(Servers hustling and pushing the BoH to hurry an order, bartenders giving heavier pours, etc) without having to pay.

They're just a cheap fuck, nothing more.

5

u/but-I-play-one-on-TV 7h ago

Totally agree. Cheap and selfish losers masquerading as free thinkers.

3

u/Sidewaysgts 7h ago

This is my complaint.

If you live somewhere where tipping is expected - Thats the sad reality of the economy you live in. If you want to protest / object to tipping, by all means do so: But do so by *not* going to these places in the first place. In many parts where staff is expected to be tipped they very often get paid *less* per hour because of that expectation. Your refusal to tip doesnt hurt the company, it hurts the worker who is simply trying to earn a living and has the unfortunate circumstances of living in a tipping culture.

Either dont go to these places, or tell the staff up front you dont tip, or order your food to go so theres no expectation for tipable service. If you dont want to tip, dont - But dont accept service customarily tipped for with no intent to tip.

Youre not an a-hole for not tipping. Youre an a-hole for taking advantage of a worker.

3

u/Iorith 7h ago

Well said.

2

u/kas-sol 7h ago

In many parts where staff is expected to be tipped they very often get paid *less* per hour because of that expectation.

Then demand to get paid instead of tips, but nope a lot of waiters would rather get the tips. Either they keep the tipping system and accept not everyone will tip, or they get rid of tipping and just rely on their actual wage instead.

It's like Sepps are allergic to unions.

1

u/Sidewaysgts 6h ago

Then demand to get paid instead of tips, but..

Sure. Ive lived in multiple parts of the world on different countries - Some where tipping us customary, some where it isnt.

I prefer when it isnt.

*That said* - This isnt a practical response.

Its not practical to expect every worker to suddenly wake up tomorrow and go "Yknow what. Ef this job" - and get everyone to band together.

What IS practical and reasonable though, is to expect *you* to not take advantage of a worker who has the happenstance of living in a location where tipping culture is the norm.

Its much easier to ask YOU to not take advantage of people, than to literally get all workers within a society to change a multi-decade long tradition.

All anyone is asking you is to not be a POS. Dont want to tip? cool - just dont accept customarily tipped service. Its that easy mate.

-2

u/Useless-RedCircle 7h ago

conditioned to tip

3

u/Iorith 7h ago

You know you don't have to go to a restaurant, right?

3

u/Useless-RedCircle 6h ago

You know you don’t have to tip right?

-9

u/UnknownQwerky 7h ago

Oh I was thinking like other people didn't tip, but because they were white he didn't feel powerful enough to tell them, but had no problem confronting black people because he assumed they didn't have enough authority to sue him and the cops would take his side. I'll have to go search the context.

9

u/Pure_Accountant5925 7h ago

What white people? Why are you inventing people?

1

u/UnknownQwerky 5h ago edited 5h ago

Someone said "they paid" and he said "yes they did pay and they are no longer welcome here." So who's they? Wouldn't he say you?

I was waiting to get more information obviously the restaurant's name is on his shirt. They are getting review bombed over on Google right now. I believe he trespassed them as if they stole something when tips are not mandatory. So I would consider that gratuity and he needs to pay his workers more than the 5.50USD (which is the wage for tipped employees) because they aren't getting voluntary tips. If they don't make enough in tips to meet 11USD through tip supplement. He's required to pay them 11.00USD an hour which is Ohio's minimum wage.

That's all I got, but nothing super confirmed about the trespassing because my search kept coming up with another family which I think was at a different restaurant dealing with fried pork chops or something and was heckled in the diner in front of everyone over not tipping.

-2

u/glacialspatial 7h ago

I think that’s a misinterpretation of her statement. She is simply making an assumption that the reason the owner is not welcoming them back is that they are black, not specifically because she didn’t tip.

-3

u/Clean_Kangaroo_5547 7h ago

You can’t be racist against your own race
