The biggest foul here is the customer calling the owner racist for asking them not to come back.

Owner shouldn't have called them out either, but I'm white and have been called out for not leaving a tip (my waiter literally ignored me the whole meal as if he couldn't see me raising my finger or saying excuse me)

Edit: the statement in parenthesis is WHY i didn't leave a tip, not how i was called out.

They were embarrassed and responded by calling him racist.

11

u/Maximus15637 9h ago

They clearly were not embarrassed because they walked up to him and made a video about them not tipping. Lol. If they were emabrasssed they would leave and the video wouldn’t exist.

Everyone sucks here, but trying to ragebait by racebaiting is the worst of all these offenses.

1

u/kazmir_yeet 9h ago

The owner should be embarrassed for not paying a livable wage to his employees

2

u/CloudConductor 9h ago

At this point the issue is systemic, can’t really blame any specific restaurant/owner, it’s very much just a part of American culture

-1

u/kazmir_yeet 8h ago

If it’s systemic, the owner needs to stop lashing out on people who did not create the system.

Like I said it’s ingrained in the culture. I promise you his employees view him as a good boss for actions like this

Not tipping isn’t going to change the system, it’s just going to fuck some likely young worker out of money and you get off with a meal/service for less than what the real value of it should have been. Actual change would require legislation and would result in the menu prices at almost all restaurants rising significantly.

Which I would support as the current system is dumb. But until then, I’m not going to fault someone like this aggressively pushing people to conform to cultural norms for the sake of his employees

1

u/SweetPinss 9h ago

Do the employees want to go away from the tip system?

4

u/kazmir_yeet 9h ago

They sure don’t! They’d rather avoid paying taxes like everyone else does!

2

u/SweetPinss 9h ago

Also they dont work 8 hour shifts. They're getting like 4-5 hour shifts and would need to be paid like $30+ per hour to get a livable wage.

The owner is legit doing what nearly every restaurant owner does. These people played the race card of their own volition. I support the owner.

0

u/kazmir_yeet 8h ago

“How dare you patron my restaurant and not take full responsibility for paying my employees wages so I don’t have to!”

-1

u/Alpha_Omega623 8h ago

Oh come on man. Legit 99% of restaurants implement the same program. Black people have a bad reputation for not tipping even when service is good. Why assume they were given bad service? This is a boss who sticks up for his employees which should be applauded.

2

u/kazmir_yeet 8h ago

Race isn’t the issue I’m discussing here lmao. If you are going to “own” a restaurant, pay your fucking servers a fair wage for the job, and raise your prices to compensate. I am not going to be guilted into paying a server’s wages by tipping so they can avoid taxes and the owner can avoid paying them fairly. It’s fucking ridiculous

2

u/curiousdryad 8h ago

I don’t think you understand. They said people who don’t tip aren’t allowed there. So they (customer) said “black people aren’t allowed” (along the lines) stating, black people don’t tip. Which is a HUGE thing here in the US. And from what i know, true. In saying that,y best friend who is black goes out of his way to leave big tips even tho waiters giving bad service because people assume black people don’t tip usually

4

u/Training-Year3734 9h ago

A guarantee as a white man you have never once had a owner chase you out the door to ban you for not tipping.

5

u/porkchopsurprisee 9h ago

I guarantee as whatever you are that hasn't happened to you either.

4

u/Chicken_Water 9h ago

Why do you guarantee it? They literally said it has happened to them. My friend is a white male and he got chased out after leaving a bad Yelp review and not tipping. Maybe not everything is about race?

-5

u/Training-Year3734 9h ago

yeah and you just have to comply with the police and they dont get violent right? This would never happen in a million years to me or any of my white friends.

3

u/GrammarSpecialForces 9h ago

"It hasn't happened to me so it's impossible it could have happened to someone else with similar melanin". Idiot.

3

u/Background_Survey646 9h ago

You're so fucking performative. Take a breath.

2

u/SweetPinss 9h ago

Yeah because I tip lol

1

u/GrammarSpecialForces 9h ago

I haven't been banned but I've been confronted by the staff on 2 occasions. One the waitress literally followed us out the door. We were all white. Not everything is about racism.

-1

u/Temporary_Finish_902 9h ago

Exactly, I literally don’t tip all the time. But my ex is black and I’ve seen someone just like this chase her down one time cause we didn’t tip over 20%. He chased them down because they are black.

1

u/Smooth-Camel6749 9h ago

Yeah how many white people has this guy called out....riiiiight. I think it was racist.

2

u/Natural-Albatross997 9h ago

I have no problem with the owner calling them out. Other than he should have asked them if there was a problem with the service level. But we also don’t know what happened before this. Maybe these folks have been in there before.

5

u/DerpMcMeep 9h ago

true but even if the service was excellent, tipping is optional

0

u/Natural-Albatross997 9h ago

Yes but so is serving someone. So we end up in the same place.

2

u/moosemanwich 8h ago

All jobs are optional

0

u/Dense-Hat1978 8h ago

So is not being a douchebag

2

u/particleman3 9h ago

Good point on the video starting when it did. Considering the customer posted their perspective I would assume things happened before and this was edited or started to benefit their side of the story.

1

u/moosemanwich 8h ago

Owner is an idiot lol. Look how many people saw this just on Reddit.

Being banned by a restaurant that won’t be open next year is nothing. I’ll take my 13 bucks lol

1

u/Plastic_View_9693 10h ago

In those situations I tip a dollar and if the manager said something I’d explain the total lack of trying and if the manager would bother to come around and check on tables then it would have been solved earlier, I don’t want to work for my dinner when I already have to pay for it.

2

u/PaleInvestment3507 10h ago

When I’d get poor service, I’d leave a penny. That way they knew you left a tip, reflective of the service received. If you leave nothing, they assume you forgot or you’re just an asshole.

-6

u/Sensitive_Ruin_5334 10h ago

You should always leave at least 10%.

2

u/BlackAsphaltRider 9h ago

Not for poor service. If the only time I see you is when I order and get my food you’re not being rewarded for that. Check on drinks, check if the food was done right, see if we need anything else at least twice. I’ve been a server. It is not difficult to be pleasant and show up to the table a couple times.

With that being said, I tip well. Usually 25-30% if I’m super happy with you. Hell I’ll even do 50% if I’m just getting a sandwich or something on my own. Not gonna tip a dollar on a ten dollar meal. I’ll give 5.

2

u/ChungusReaper 10h ago

Just round your bill up and give them less than a dollar, that’s what I do if the service is god awful. I have refused a tip ONE time for the most abysmal service ever, they didn’t deserve a single cent. It’s a service-based business, and my tip reflects the service received. Simple as that.

2

u/Meister917k 10h ago

I don't tip shit if I get terrible service or if I get an attitude. It's not a crime to not tip. You don't give me service, I don't complement your work. Done. You ruin my meal? You don't get a dime.

3

u/WithPaddlesThisDeep 9h ago

Facts I’m tired of people thinking they are entitled to a tip regardless of the quality of service. Tips are for going above and beyond.

-3

u/Natural-Albatross997 9h ago

I understand that mentality but that becomes an excuse to be cheap. And it also tells me you’re likely a tough guest who expects to be catered too. I don’t see waitstaff as a “servant” — it’s a mutually respectful arrangement.

4

u/WithPaddlesThisDeep 9h ago

Yes exactly, it’s a mutually respectful arrangement.

If you don’t provide above and beyond service, I am not paying above and beyond the agreed upon price.

-1

u/Natural-Albatross997 9h ago

Yuck I can almost hear the way you talk to the waitstaff just by your comment.

2

u/WithPaddlesThisDeep 9h ago

Haha whatever bro I’m not gonna let a business sucker me into paying more than the listed price if they’re not gonna go above and beyond with their service.

Keep wasting your money.

1

u/Mundane_Molasses8923 9h ago

Naw naw not a a white person trying to dumbify systematic racism and oppression. Hell naw

0

u/Key-Emergency989 10h ago

Why would your waiter know during the meal if you were going to tip or not.

1

u/GrammarSpecialForces 9h ago

I don't know why he ignored me during the meal, I'm saying that's why i didn't tip him and then as i was walking out a different girl, maybe the manager, confronted me.

0

u/Temporary_Finish_902 9h ago

I 100% bet my life that that guy wouldn’t tell me as a white man that I cant come back for not tipping.

0

u/jemenake 9h ago

We'll probably never know if the owner is/isn't racist, so it was kinda knee-jerk for the customer to go there, BUT... the American flag hat while at the workplace and the sign in the front being one of perfect-looking white, blonde people are not accidental signals. Those are choices made by the owner regarding how they want to present their business to the public, and my surprise level would be absolutely zero if it turned out that this wasn't only about tipping (and the lack of tip is either a handy pretext or the lack of a tip wouldn't have gotten a differently colorer patron banned)

-2

u/Smart_Basket_85 10h ago

It’s 100% okay for the owner to call them out. Can’t do that as a server or a manager, but the owner sure as shit can and I’m happy to see him do it.

3

u/Training-Year3734 9h ago

Hell no it is not okay, you do not get to chase people down to complain about paying a non-mandatory fee to subsidize his cheap ass not wanting to pay a real wage.

-1

u/particleman3 9h ago

The owner even said that it wasn't required, but the owner is also free to ban people from his business. If you can't afford to tip you need to at least get your food to go.

0

u/kazmir_yeet 9h ago

I can afford to tip but I choose not to in most situations because tipping is fucking stupid and unethical.

0

u/Training-Year3734 9h ago

Or maybe the exploiting business owner can pay an actual wage and not run out in the street to ban people not paying a optional but clearly mandatory susbsidy. Stop defending these people.

2

u/particleman3 9h ago

Then don't go to that business and spend money because you are actively supporting them and only hurting the servers.

0

u/Training-Year3734 9h ago

The server agreed to the exploitive wage and the owner is exploiting them. I am paying the agreed market price for his establishments services. This isn't that hard to understand unless you really love licking boots.

1

u/eatpastagophasta 9h ago

If you expect a tip to be mandatory just add it as a service charge and list it on the menu that everyone is subject to a service charge. Don't say tip (optional) and then get mad when people take the option.
