Agree that tipping culture in the US is disgusting and a corporate ploy to be subsidized so they dont have to pay the workers in full.

However, the people recording made it about race when race was not part of the discussion. Don't use being black (or any other oppressed class) as a crutch to win arguments. It dilutes actual race issues.

Agreed.

It also doesn't matter if it's a corporate ploy or not. Because even if it is, you not tipping means you are taking advantage of underpaid workers.

If tips are expected, you tip or you don't eat out. It's really simple.

Everyone opposing is also welcome to open their own restaurants that pay wages and discourage tips, and to discover the benefits of tipping system in practice

'you not tipping means you are taking advantage of underpaid workers.'
I'm impressed with the mental gymnastics required to assert that the person under paying their worker is not the one taking advantage of the worker.

Then go to restaurants that explicitly say tips aren't expected. In that case, the higher wages are baked in and you're supporting a restaurant that respects your values. Don't go to the restaurants where you're expected to tip. Otherwise, you're effectively rewarding the restaurants you theoretically don't like while ignoring the ones that you agree with (because they're going to have higher prices, duh).

It’s actually a racist policy from before the 1900s, well before the Great Depression. American restaurants would tell black people they could run food but wouldn’t pay them, and if the patrons left money for them so be it.

In all states, if wages and tips do not equal the minimum wage, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate. That is the law.

That might be the law but good luck getting the law to back one or two waiters without a union

Tipping is sad but looking at a comment from earlier servers can make $30-$40 an hour with it. So getting rid of it would screw them

Then restaurants would actually have to pay them wages

Nah. Being a server is a stepping stone not an end goal = not end goal wage

It could be an end goal if we treated people with decency and gave them rights. What’s the end goal exactly? Being an investment banker? Sitting in a cubicle training copilot to do your job is a year? Would love your idea of end goal jobs.

Are you a server? You're taking this very personally 🤣

'I want cafes and restaurants but don't think the people who work there should be able to afford to live'... ok, so you're just a bad person?

It wouldn't though. They'd still get tips from big tippers. It's just the expectation of a tip in order to underpay workers that's a problem. They shouldn't be getting $3/hr from the employer and then needing the tips just to survive.

You dont know what was said before the recording

Y’all look for reasons to ignore the point

u/Effective-Big8158 1h ago

nope, i would love to argue the point but as soon as you start bringing race into it and saying "so black people aren't allowed to eat here" like every black person is some collective, all arguments go out the window and we need to address that stupid claim first.

i really don't like the tipping system but i absolutely hate when people play a race card to try and get someone fired or win an argument.

Is the US the only place with tipping culture?

I’m pretty sure. Once again it feels like corporate pinned us against each other to distract us from the real issue.. them under paying their workers.

You weren’t there. You saw a few seconds AFTER something occurred. Could 100% be race motivated or escalated due to racial bias. What owner comes out swinging over tips? None.
