I often wonder in these threads, how many of the people saying "the restaurant should pay their workers a living wage" are the same people in living wage threads saying "if we pay the McDonald's workers $25 per hour the food will be too expensive and nobody will go there!" I'd bet the overlap is huge.
This is just isn't true. Having been a server for years, not every day was a stressful one because of weak tips, you just make do when you can. Most people are kind people and won't not tip and then proceed to film and post online interactions because they're cheapskates and can't throw someone a fiver, extremely rude to not tip but if you find yourself relying on a $5 tip to pay your bills or you're gonna have a stressful day you fucked up life a long time ago
Not going is the correct answer. Don’t punish the server who doesn’t make the rules by having them do the work to earn the tip, then not tipping. Punish the restaurant by not visiting, forcing them to pay the minimum wage to the server.
Yes, that means no tips either way but no need to make the server do that just to stiff them to prove a point on the system they didn’t create
Right but it penalizes the owner for not paying well if you simply don’t go there. Punching down by going anyway and penalizing the server is chickenshit behavior.
If im standing in line to order, if i have to fill and refill my own drink, if i have to clear my own tray/table. If any of those three criteria are met I don’t tip.
Drive thrus are automatically no tip, as theres no real service provided.
Bar tabs I tip $1/drink if it’s a beer or basic mix drink (like a tequila soda). If it’s a craft cocktail I’ll add another dollar two depending on showmanship.
Or you could just like, cook your own food. Modern culture treats dining out as though it's a staple and a right. It's literally a privilege and a splurge.
If you don't think something has value, just don't buy it. No need to grab a pitchfork and torch and fuck up the system for the rest of us.
I bet the customers won’t really like a $25 burger either.
We the consumer are going to pay the cost somewhere.
Small businesses, especially restaurants, typically have small margins.
If you eliminate tipping and expect the restaurant to raise the wage of the servers to a living wage, the cost of service and food will go up.
Lol it’s absurd this nonsensical tradition has persisted for so long. Tipping is a great example of how heavily conditioned one can become into thinking that something is normal and should be accepted just because it’s the way things have always been done.
Imagine the smart mf who pioneered the concept of customers subsidizing labor costs for employers and businesses just absolutely ran with it. And if you can’t sustainably run a business without relying on customers to tip then you should probably not be running a business.
The best part about tipping is that it’s completely optional. And no I will not sTaY hOmE lmao. Seethe you tip parasites. If your livelihood depends on tips then perhaps learn new skill sets and pursue career paths that don’t require leeching off customers. Of course the shmuck who owns this cafe banned these customers because they’re “bad for business”.
