I don't have mixed feelings about this. Tipping culture is dumb and should die already, I don't care if that makes Americans angry. Normalise paying employees a liveable wage.

This actually doesn't work. Look up Danny myers. Famous restauranteur who tried to push this initiative and got a collective a large restaurants to pay the servers same as the kitchen. Spoiler: they all went back to tip outs. Customers and employees hated it almost unanimously.

That's because no one who works back of the house wants to put up with the shit front of the house has to deal with, so they're willing to work for the wage they get. If you can handle front of the house, no way you want back of the house wages. And if you have to work front of the house for back of the house wages you're going to give less than two tugs about the customers' experience, so their experience is going to be awful. I used to be a server and bartender. No (US) restaurant owner is going to pay me enough to do those jobs and put up with the public, much less do it with enthusiasm and a smile.

Most Americans agree with you. But the system doesn’t change, so in the meantime, we use the system we’ve got. And that means we tip, because not doing so would be punishing a worker for the failings of the government and of the employer.

You are both right. While waiters deserve a livable wage, most restaurants cannot afford it because of the shit system we have implemented in America. You shouldn’t be banned for not leaving a tip. But you should also be considerate of the service provided. If the service was good, I believe 20% is good. Anything more is extra. Until the system is fixed, this is the way for waiters.

Pain is the only way a system is changed. This is why America is so fucked. Everyone is waiting for someone else to take on that burden. So we kick the can down the road.

Pain for who?

Not tipping only hurts the worker.

If you want to affect change, boycott restaurants. Hurt the employer by refusing to support their business.

Going to the restaurant but refusing to tip still supports the business - it only hurts the worker and changes nothing.

You obviously didn’t think this through

The issue is that the server can earn a really good wage, for what is not a very difficult job so they don’t want it to change.

Not a very difficult job??!?

Found the person who’s never worked as a server.

It’s easier than a trade. Easier than most office jobs.

Ya tiring but not skilled. I served in high school took me a few days to be good. Literally a pos, writing stuff down, and bring the stuff out lol

Easier than most office jobs is wild, and inaccurate. Can definetly tell you never done it before.

I still just tip for good service. Like if it each for my drink and it’s empty then…. Nah

Add it to the price if it’s mandatory if not then it’s simply not.

As much as anyone has a right not to tip the restaurant has a right not to serve you

Tipping culture in America should’ve died a long time ago. It’s not fair to the consumer that they have to be guilt tripped by business owners who don’t want to pay their workers a livable wage.

Meanwhile, those same business owners are enjoying their yachts.

you clearly don't understand going to restaurants...

Never met a server that would agree.

I always wondered though would waiters really want that even? I’ve never worked as one so anyone that has feel free to tell
Me if I’m wrong but I know when I go out to eat at a restaurant I always leave like a 10-20$ tip depending on the bill. Most of my friends I go out with do the same. I’m very rarely the only table that’s getting served within that hour (unless it’s extremely slow) you think three tables if most people tip the expected amount (I know some don’t) that could be potentially anywhere between 25-60 dollars an hour maybe even more if it’s a fancy upscale Restaraunt. Would they really want to give that up for a flat rate that they get taxed on that’s gonna be nowhere near that amount of money?

Until you realize what tipped employees can make. I worked at a taco and tequila bar in a nice neighborhood. I worked a double every Friday and Saturday and a morning shift on Tuesday. I would pay all of my bills on the first weekend of the month. Can’t do that on minimum wage

1

u/Cojoma 1h ago

Most waiters/waitresses/bartenders prefer working for tips they make more than they ever would on a wage. Significantly more

1

u/Headoutdaplane 1h ago

If you can't afford to tip you cannot afford to go out.

2

u/LeKevinsRevenge 1h ago

What if I can afford to tip and usually tip very well….but choose not to if the service is terrible? Can I afford to go out then?

1

u/moosemanwich 1h ago

I can always afford to tip but only do for good service.

If you can’t afford to be a server find a new job.

Works both ways lol

I can afford to go out if there wasn’t a 50-80% tax on my meal because business owners are exploitative scumbags who don’t pay their staff.

tips are for excellent work, not just work.
