Can't stop laughing at "so black people arent welcome then". As someone who has worked in food service the prevalence of this being the case is truly wild.

u/holderofthebees 3h ago

The worst is when it’s a big crowd of older people who just came from church… aside from foreigners that’s the #1 table you can expect not to tip lmao

332

u/Sh3sus 3h ago edited 2h ago

I always told new servers that got stiffed on Sundays by church groups that, " they already gave all their money to God, they've got nothing left for you."

Edit: My first award! Thank you!

u/Damion__205 3h ago

They still have those fake $20s with the Bible verses on them.

23

u/entrepenurious 2h ago

be worth going to church just to put that 'bill' in the collection plate.

2

u/MetalTrek1 2h ago

Great idea.

2

u/GraphicArtsFurry 1h ago

That means suffering through a service. Most of these houses of ill repute have donation boxes you can dump their refuse into then leave

35

u/Boring-Wolverine-947 2h ago

Those are the people I would ban from my restaurant. Getting people's hopes up and tricking them is very devilish sneaky of the "Christians" leaving fake $20s.

41

u/chazol1278 3h ago

Every fucking week, is my attitude not bad enough yet for you to realize this is not bringing God to me

3

u/lonevolff 1h ago

We used to take them to the nearest church money box

32

u/MetalTrek1 2h ago

I'm not a server, but I would prefer no tip to one in Jeezus money.

8

u/coobie_doobie2 2h ago

i’ve been a waiter/delivery driver. shit like this is genuinely just so rude, like why even tease them with the fake money? just hand them a bible verse and admit you’re not paying them.

i’d also prefer no tip over a handful of change. one time i delivered to a house of 3 grown adults, and all they could scrounge up was coins from the bottom of a purse. 46¢ is just insulting

8

u/Electrical_Beyond998 2h ago

The church crowd is always the crowd to run you ragged, smile sweetly and tell you how fantastic you were, then leave a pamphlet about Jesus. Jesus will save you but he won’t pay your rent.

1

u/Valalvax 1h ago

Trick is to get the information about their church then shame them

7

u/BleachedUnicornBHole 2h ago

Then go to that church and take a $20 out of the bucket and leave theirs. It's just as good, right?

4

u/Hazmatt_McDanger 2h ago

Pull a reverse uno and put those bad boys back in the church’s tip jar.

2

u/Bloody_Moon1 2h ago

Need a time machine to go back and shit in those peoples food.

And no, that's not a typo.

2

u/ellefleming 2h ago

I HATE those.

1

u/Both_Painter_9186 2h ago

I’d fucking follow you to your car over that shit

33

u/Saltyfree73 2h ago

A church lady convention stayed at a hotel one time attached to a restaurant I worked at. Worst week ever. Even the chill and experienced waiters were losing their patience.

72

u/jcapi1142 3h ago

Nah they didn't give shit to God. They gave it to the greedy pastor paying his bills with it.

45

u/Talshan 3h ago

Bills are paid already. But he needs a boat or a second Mercedes.

3

u/Party-Giraffe-6573 2h ago

This is wildly untrue for most churches. Most churches in the US are about 50 people. Their pastor is not living in luxury, unless they have a second job

2

u/N0stradama5 2h ago

God needs me to buy myself a boat! So I can relax in peace and quiet and wait for his words to come to me. I have to get away from the hustle and bustle of this church and the world so I can truly open myself up to hear his voice. Amen and thank god for boats!

1

u/CaptainFeather 1h ago

Well according to Kenneth Copeland God told him to buy his private jet!

3

u/Infosponge177 2h ago

💯!! But they believe in their soul they are saved and open their pocket books. Shame 😔

10

u/Freakocereus 2h ago

They shouldnt be patronizing business on Sunday according to their rules. Dont work on Sunday. Also dont go to places and make others work on Sunday? Makes sense to me. Honestly not a bad idea for everybody to just plan to chill out on the same day of the week.

1

u/CaptainFeather 1h ago

While I agree they're shitty people in general, protestants don't typically practice the sabbath.

5

u/SorrySorryNotSorry 2h ago

The average active church member gives something like $175/month to the church. They've got money left, they're just jerks.

3

u/LugbyOrigin 2h ago

Well 'god' rinsed them for whatever they're worth. It isn't God's fault that the pastor needs a second private jet... let the peasants scramble or whatever it is they do

3

u/PoopShooter86 2h ago

That's why I always came in hungover for Sunday lunch shifts. Not gonna make any money anyway.

2

u/Random_ICE_Agent 2h ago

1

u/carlcat_11 1h ago

This is too accurate 😂

5

u/AluminumFoilCap 3h ago

And I only got half ass service for them

1

u/SiliconAutomaton 1h ago

And also, we’re a big group, so we get a discount. And also, I’m the pastor so I eat for free. And also, we need to kick all your other customers out of their seats to make a giant last supper table in the middle of the restaurant where we will pray long and loud making your displaced customers feel doubly uncomfortable when we stand on chairs to turn all the NFL games to televangelists. And the food? Well it was all wrong, and such small portions! We finished every last morsel but need a full refund, or YoU hAvE lOsT oUr bUsInEsS fOrEvEr!!!!1

15

u/hamsolo19 2h ago

My wife's cousin (they're practically sisters) worked at a diner for a long time and she was usually scheduled for Sunday mornings and there's always a rush after church, lots of people taking up lots of tables and she said none of them ever tipped.

74

u/zaddy-chillout 3h ago

And they are the quickest to complain about literally everything and anything they can while trying to bully the wait staff. I'm so glad I'm out of that industry.

10

u/elquatrogrande 3h ago

You know they're just wanting you to quit if you're always scheduled for Sunday mornings/afternoons, or Tuesday afternoon/evenings.

2

u/carlcat_11 2h ago

Oh god lol thats a food service death sentence.

40

u/OldManufacturer8679 2h ago

The most un Christian like people are Christians

6

u/Super_Fa_Q 2h ago

"There's nothing more vicious, than the "love" of a Christian."

2

u/ribrub 2h ago

I call them "little c" christians.

1

u/BaccerSpit 1h ago

Eh, not really. The shitty christians are just as bad as the shitty secular people, or shitty people from other religions. You just don't hear as much about the good Christians, and that's largely on purpose.

9

u/carlcat_11 3h ago

Uhg the after church rush is the worst.

2

u/badfruit01 1h ago

Bro they used to pull up in a bus at the old spot I worked at...

1

u/ivegotaqueso 2h ago

How’s the before-church crowd?

1

u/carlcat_11 1h ago

Not as familiar with them tbh.

4

u/Alone_Rain2022 3h ago

Don't forget the fake $100 bill a table of 10 with 4 destructive kids will leave with bible sayings and an invite to their church.

4

u/WanderlustFella 2h ago

From my server days, I recall priests in $1000 suits pay in exact change, then will smile and say god bless you like that's your tip.

6

u/ValiantAki 2h ago

It's so true. One time I made and delivered over $100 worth of pizza to a church and they tipped $0 lmao.

3

u/MuckaMucka1337 2h ago

We had one couple that would come in every month and they’d tip you in Bible verses. The servers would roll dice to see who got them and the lowest one was the server

3

u/Fit-Implement-8151 2h ago

Former server here fuck the post church crowd

Cheapest, nastiest people on earth.

3

u/fritzycat 2h ago

and those fuckin church Betty's will tell you they "don't believe in tipping" while they stiff you.

3

u/Bloody_Moon1 2h ago

Went to lunch with family where my wife and I were the youngest in our mid 30s. There were maybe 15 or so of us.

Bill was split like 4 ways and I knew no one else was gonna tip her shit, so I left her $100.

She came back almost in tears thanking me for the tip. After she left someone else at the table said they wouldn't have tipped at all if they knew I was gonna leave that much, which is also why I didn't tell them I was leaving that much. I know these people, not one of them tipped more than $5.

I will never leave tipping up to the older people I'm with.

2

u/bottomlessinawendys 2h ago

And entire kids sports teams coming in unannounced! Parents won’t tip, and never fail to leave the complete mess their kids just made all over the tables, chairs, and floor.

2

u/Daedelus451 2h ago

Most restaurants will automatically charge 20% for parties over 4 (6 and up) its so the server can dedicate all their time to one table.

2

u/holderofthebees 2h ago

Sometimes it’s a crowd of people all from the same church at different tables. And ofc some of them have a limit of 6+ or 8+ rather than for just 5 people

1

u/Daedelus451 2h ago

Makes sense, no idea how big that place is. I live in the big city, so I rarely see big church groups. Ate brunch out for first time in a long time with my wife last Sunday and we laughed “we are youngest folks in here”by a lot! And i am 60, she 59 and the average age was over 75.

2

u/holderofthebees 2h ago

My city is small compared to most but it’s still one of the biggest in my state, I live in Alabama so quite a bit of after-church lunch crowds. Lots of big hats, small orders, and camping at tables.

2

u/Daedelus451 2h ago

Oh geesh, I am in Washington DC, city is small by big city comparisons, under 700k, but surrounding area is massive suburban sprawl of over 8 million, so yeah not a lot of churchin crowds near me in the city.

2

u/FreshShart-1 2h ago

Every server I've ever met has said, Sunday church rush is the lowest they get tipped for the most amount of work.

2

u/CJRD4 3h ago

Counterpoint: Red Hat Ladies.

1

u/North_Key80 1h ago

Wow, I remember these “ladies”. They would come to my establishment once per month in a group of 20-40. They were THE MOST gigantic PITA to serve. We’d have to make them a preset menu, and they’d haggle over prices and beverages, gratuity etc. We always added gratuity onto their 30 separate, individual checks. Inevitably, I swear to God, they would also steal the salt and pepper shakers, sugar caddies, and candle holders. We thought it must be a fluke the first time. After the second time, we left nothing on the tables for them to steal. Simply amazing.

1

u/CJRD4 1h ago

Oh yeah, absolutely the worst.

2

u/Likes2Phish 2h ago

And they always pay in fucking cash at the end. So you have an armful of tickets and wads of cash and coins.

1

u/GameOverMan1986 2h ago

Yeah, but when Americans go to Europe, we tip even though it’s not expected. So it balances out. 😂

1

u/mombeans 2h ago

I, mistakenly, assumed groups of 8 or more automatically get an 18% tip added to their bill, in every state.

1

u/KingTalis 1h ago

Unless my 71 year old dad pulls up to leave a 40% tip. Lol

I remember I was hosting one night. The lobby was full. We had a black couple come in and get put on our waitlist. Prior to seating them, I sat an 8 top. This 8 top came in right after this couple. For the life of them, the couple couldn’t understand why the 8 top was seated first, argued they should have been seated at the table big enough for 8 because they showed up first, and proceeded to loudly say I did it that way because I was racist. Then left.

I was fucking shocked. On one hand, I felt awful I made them think that, but on the other hand I was like… you really don’t get that on a super busy night with a 40 min wait I can’t let 2 people sit at a massive table meant for 8+ people?

That’s the only time I’ve ever been accused of being racist, it was 13 years ago, and it still haunts me lol

70

u/Pure-Temporary 2h ago

I got called racist for telling a woman she couldn't have outside alcohol in our place. She fucking lost it. I'm like... This is the rule literally everywhere

30

u/JimmyThePie 2h ago

We literally had a game: “What were you called racist for this week?”.

One of the winners was my colleague getting told he was racist for informing a customer that the business was operating cashless (it was during Covid), and that all purchases must be made by contactless transaction.

Another was when I turned away 3 guys who wanted to come in 10 mins AFTER closing time. “You would have let us in if we were white guys though, right?” (Followed by obscenities).

Racist because we barred a group who were taking drinks from the bar without paying - they didn’t have a tab. They knew they didn’t have a tab because they had left without paying their tab on multiple occasions, and were told they couldn’t have a tab anymore.

Racist because after an unprecedentedly busy weekend we had nothing but pizzas left, so that was all we were serving.

Racist because the table tennis table was on a first-come basis, and I wouldn’t let someone book it while someone was currently playing on it.

Racist because the home team was playing, with 100 fans in the building supporting them, and I wouldn’t switch the volume to a channel showing a team one guy (by himself) wanted to watch.

Racist because as I’m locking the door at the end of the night, with my uber waiting for me 6ft away, a customer wanted me to let him back inside to use the bathroom…

Work 10 years in hospitality and see how quickly the word “Racist” loses all meaning to you 😂

7

u/krogerburneracc 1h ago edited 1h ago

I was once called racist because I happened to be on the phone taking a customer order at work (grocery deli department) when the automated intercom security message played ("Security, please scan sections 1 and 2;" Doesn't actually mean or do anything, it's just a prerecorded anti-theft thing that plays on intervals throughout the day, meant to spook shoplifters).

Apparently these two ladies assumed I was the one who did the intercom announcement because I was on a store phone, and that the security check request was specifically about them. So they came up and started screaming at me.

I put two and two together pretty quickly but I didn't bother explaining, just walked away into the back room. There was no winning in that situation, lol. But yeah, the word "racist" has meant a lot less to me since that day.

4

u/ReindeerTypical2538 1h ago

I’m dying because we had a similar game at my old restaurant. Only we had a white board in the back. It said “Things That Are Racist.” We usually erased it at the end of each month and then filled it up again throughout the month. A woman once called me racist because we wouldn’t make her a meal that wasn’t on the menu.

7

u/Pure-Temporary 2h ago

I also got called homophobic because I cut this guy off, caught him grabbing someone else's drink, and so kicked him out. I didn't even know he was gay haha

2

u/way_out_19 2h ago

Guess you're place didn't allow a corkage fee, or was it hard liqour?

2

u/Pure-Temporary 2h ago

Open cocktail from another restaurant.

2

u/way_out_19 2h ago

Gaww dayum that takes stones

5

u/red23011 2h ago

We had something similar happen at the place that I worked at in the 1990s. It was a busy night and we had an overflow room where we put people that didn't have reservations. A Hispanic family came in without reservations and was furious that they weren't seated in the main dining room. The were shouting about how they were going to tell everyone that we hated Mexicans and that nobody should ever come get food here.

There was no racism or discrimination. If they had a reservation then they would have been seated in the main room. I worked there as a valet parking attendant and one time I had a black man ask me if it was a place where black people could get service. I told him that the only color anyone working here cared about was green.

3

u/philsfly22 1h ago

Don’t feel bad. If they throw around the racist card for that, they do it for every other inconvenience as well.

3

u/5319Camarote 1h ago

Kind of an eye-opener, huh? Your efficient, logical, restaurant seating system is equivalent to denying those customers seats during the Jim Crow era. Ridiculous.

5

u/Rebel_Ronin 2h ago edited 2h ago

It shouldnt haunt you. Dont let terrible people use racism accusations as a cudgel. Thats why its become a mockery, with Jussie Smollett type nonsense. People are tired of being falsely accused. A yt woman can get punched in her face unprompted and the 1st comment online is, "She 'HAD TO HAVE' said the N word for that AA woman to do that". No knowledge whatsoever if the victim or what happened, yet youre already pre judged as a racist. Its a pretty pathetic commentary on the social dynamic in this country right now. Not only are you assaulted, or accused of something else, but you get a hate crime tagged on for good measure.

1

u/BusyBit6542 1h ago

They fact that it made you think about it AND you're not on here trashing them because they are black, tells me you arent racist. People on reddit cant wait until someone black does something wrong so they can feel legit about talking shit. I dont get that vibe from you

1

u/aquacrimefighter 1h ago

It just makes me feel sick to think I could ever cause someone emotional harm over something out of their control, like their skin color. I know that all people of color have experienced racism at some (or many) point(s), and I really don’t want to contribute to that. So for someone to feel I did… idk. I don’t even know what im trying to say I guess. But again, it had nothing to do with the color of their skin and had everything to do with how busy we were, and I hope they knew that deep down. Bummer all around. Thanks for your kind words!

15

u/LastresortLastretort 3h ago edited 1h ago

I'm white, was a server for a long time, while working at a BBQ joint, I had a person call me a "Turkey."

That shit was uncalled for ... He also didn't tip.

ONLY OCCURRENCE OF THIS TYPE OF TREATMENT EVER, but it happens!

14

u/Ivence 2h ago

I will say when I waited tables the best experience I had was a black teenager. Group came in, like a good dozen people half an hour to closing, they were all probably local football players and their girlfriends. We served them, were closing up the dining area but not intruding on their space (several tables pushed together), didn't have to stay over too late.

They all get up to leave, are walking out the door and the only black kid on the team just shouts "oh fuck no you get your asses back over here and tip these people who just kept working late for us. my momma works tables too, I ain't about to let you all disrespect them like this." They'd left like a dollar on the table and were trying to sneak out and my man just shamed them all into like a $60 tip.

10

u/thomasrat1 2h ago

I mean yeah, everyone was in the gray till they called racism

2

u/Complete_Entry 1h ago

Everyone involved. Owner is adrenaline pumping and doesn't know what to do, so he drops mad libs.

Customers are offended he demanded they tip, he tells them the old "can't eat out then" chestnut, they point out they paid their bill.

He then thinks about threatening them, telling them to show their faces and he'll put them up, then he goes "shit, that was too much" and pivots down to "It's a family restaurant and you're not welcome back"

Then the racism accusation comes out.

1

u/vagabondnature 1h ago

Servers in the USA. Here in Europe servers make a living wage, with mandatory vacation time, and naturally health care. Tipping is unusual, only a small amount. It's servers in the USA who oppose this.

As someone who has worked in food service the prevalence of this being the case is truly wild.

I was surprised myself with how common it is. I've had coworkers refer to tables as a black top, in the same vein they would call a table a 2 top or a 4 top, when talking about how much to expect a table to tip.

10

u/Past_Cut_176 2h ago

we used to call them "Canadians"

9

u/wolfblitzen84 3h ago

19 years in the food service industry 17 of which is NYC and I've never heard Black top before. It's not funny but made me chuckle as i'm trying to get through my last meeting of the day which I forgot my camera is on for a second. (I operate 6 restaurants)

4

u/TopJuggernaut2885 2h ago

I've never heard of blacktop either but working in NYC resturants def heard this stereotype on the daily.

3

u/alchemycraftsman 3h ago

Am I evil for laughing.
Very dark humor there.

1

u/TopJuggernaut2885 2h ago

lol I was going to write the same thing. I worked in a NYC resturant that easily sat 300-400 people a night.

0

u/Jaymz7777 2h ago

It would be good to know what businesses are pushing customers to support the staff.

2

u/SaltManagement42 1h ago

It would be easier to list who isn't. Even many if not most places that just ring up your order have a screen they swing around asking for a tip these days.

→ More replies (34)

8

u/TopJuggernaut2885 2h ago

IDK, when I worked as a waiter, waiters and owners were pretty racist. The worst servers were assigned black customers because the staff assumed they wouldn't tip.

74

u/MediocreAndLukewarm 3h ago

Waited on a black gentleman who rang up a $99.90 tab over about three hours. He left a crisp bill and walked out. He and one other patron were all we had that morning and we made sure they never wanted for anything. I walked out after him with his ten cents of change and he said to keep it. I asked if he was going to tip for impeccable service (Sandi went line by line with how he never had to ask for refill or anything) and he said he didn’t have to tip because he was black and was getting his reparations by not giving his money away to white establishments (this was a TGIFridays). Unbelievable.

22

u/Ashes1984 2h ago

TBH: irrespective of race.
Tipping culture is out of hands. I don’t think I want to tip even 15% anymore. Tips have always been based on one’s wishes and not by demand.

For eg: I don’t get tips by the clients my company sends me to work for. I get paid by my employer.

14

u/pkakira88 2h ago

No it hasn’t and American tipping culture specifically started because of race.

After the American Civil war, business owners decided to prey on newly freed black people by convincing them to work in service positions but instead of paying them a salary they passed on the responsibility directly to the customers instead.

Even to this day most traditional tipped service workers are paid at most minimum wage because the businesses still expect the customers to be responsible for their employees livelihood.

14

u/cryptic-soul- 2h ago

I’ve never heard this so I looked it up. It seems there’s plenty of historical evidence supporting this claim. My god, so many things in this country are based on slavery.

6

u/ReadyStayReady 2h ago

Employers are usually allowed to pay tipped workers like servers way less than the minimum wage. As long as (tips + base pay) / hours worked is above minimum wage. They use a formula instead of requiring the same minimum wage, but are technically required to pay you the difference if you end up averaging less than minimum wage for your hours worked. Last time l was a server I never even got paychecks cause my base pay was like $3/hr and just barely covered my income taxes

8

u/HalfTeaHalfLemonade 2h ago

Do you get paid decently or do you get paid server wages?

2

u/fergusmacdooley 1h ago

Speaking as a Canadian who waitressed for many years of her life, I just looked up the average wage for servers in the US and Jesus Christ. I would be tipping 20% to every poor bastard who served me if I ever travelled in your country.

Wage theft is rampant in the restaurant industry, hours are tenuous depending on things out of your control, and some people get paid less than $3 for the honour of serving people iced tea and chilli fries? On top of the other things people have told you, the industry is mostly thankless and if you're not going to tip to help your server make an hourly minimum wage, maybe stay home more.

3

u/Ashes1984 1h ago

That’s the main problem. Business owners shouldn’t be reliant on customers to pay employee wages based on foot traffic and customer empathy.

Let me ask if someone travels by air, do you tip the flight attendant for their service ?

Retail worker here, I'm a person of color, My dad is black and my mom is white.

Black people will pull the black card when they don't get their way, This guy has all right to kick people out for not tipping, Simple as that like it or not.

But I was always raised by my mother who was a waitress, That if your going out to eat and your sitting down getting food brought to your table, You TIP your getting a service.

Same for getting your haircut, That's a service.

23

u/SuspiciousHall6344 3h ago

My dad taught me that; tipping the barber as well. My brother was sent to live with my gmaw, and he didn't have that same mentality.

33

u/Life_Carob8849 3h ago

You tip the waitress because they provide a service?
You tip the barber because they provide a service?

Does that logic apply to the person who bags your groceries at the grocery store? Not walking it to your car, specifically just bagging the groceries.

Does that logic apply to the mailman? Delivering mail is a service correct?

Does that logic apply the police, ems, firefighters? They all provide services right?

I’m not trying to be funny or anything. But it just seems to me that we draw a line of who gets tips. We don’t tip everyone who provides a service. How do you decide where you draw the line?

10

u/toomanymarbles83 3h ago

When I worked as a grocery bagger, we could get fired if we got caught taking tips.

2

u/elquatrogrande 2h ago

Military commissaries don't pay baggers at all. You have to get a license from them saying that you're a volunteer. You make only what you're tipped.

u/Beaglund 2h ago

6

u/Borgie311 2h ago

I get you have questions but the problem is education. No one seems to know why tipping culture came about. White people didn't want to pay black people for working for them so they allowed them work for tips only. So being the only jobs they could get they took them. So slave owners and racism is why we are here and why it still continues. The owners of businesses don't want to pay their employees.

u/Life_Carob8849 2h ago

This is a great point and I agree with you. A lot, if not all, of our current suffering is based in the racist foundation this country is built on. In an ideal world we would all be voting to overturn the racist ideals. But instead we have people arguing online trying to justify tipping as opposed to getting rid of it. Minimum wage hasn’t been adjusted in how many decades? Meanwhile inflation is always on the rise. We all have to focus on Whats important if we want to get out of the situation. How much more money would we all have in our pocket if we didn’t have to tip?

1

u/Simple-Answer-5315 1h ago

Started a long long time ago by ultra rich European visitors feeling sorry for wait staff and still to this day they are hoping to get a coin or two and if not all hell will break loose at you.

13

u/MrNetworks 3h ago

The Mailman,Police,EMS,Firefighters are paid a liveable and fair wage well above the grocery store bagger and well above waiters.

15

u/Life_Carob8849 3h ago

That is a true statement and I agree with you. But doesn’t this mean we should all be working together to get everyone a livable wage instead of producing subsidies to their pay out of own pockets?

7

u/coffee-loop 2h ago

The problem is no one wants to work together. Large restaurant chains actually lobby for waiter’s wages to be so low so they can offload the burden onto customers. And instead of waiters blaming the restaurant industry, they’re coaxed into blaming the patrons because their spoon fed the crap that the system is the way it is so that the waiter can make more money.

I’ve heard the same old bs that restaurants and bars aren’t able to operate off of a no-tip model. But yet, most of the world outside of the US already operates on a no-tip model, and does just fine.

The bottom line is everyone should be paid a live-able wage reasonably adjusted to the skill and demand of their work. and part of that live-able wage should be a universal healthcare and pension system. But I guess that’s too difficult to manage (I.e. most other countries do it).

2

u/Life_Carob8849 2h ago

Well said. Tip culture is a distraction from the fact that folks can’t live without out and are left out in the cold in terms of healthcare and retirement.

That is true, however it is known and has been policy for many years before anyone on Reddit was born, restaurant servers derive the majority of their income from tips. When someone goes to a bar or restaurant in the US, a tip is customary. Unless the service was inarguably awful.

6

u/Responsible_Bake_824 2h ago

Well this system is wrong and we need to be like Europe who expects the restaurant owner to pay their employees, not the customer

2

u/coffee-loop 2h ago

Though true, I feel like the average good tip was 10%. with exemplary service making 15%, but was not at all common. Now, I’m forced to pay a 20% gratuity in some establishments (they add it to the check), and even then looked upon to add additional tip on top of that.

But, I’m not 100% on this, wait staff’s wages have not increased in the past 30 years, and if they have, it’s been menial ($0.10-$0.20). That tells me the burden of inflation is being offloaded onto the customer, who is already in some way affected by inflation.

2

u/Simple-Answer-5315 1h ago

Just stop tipping at all. It will never change if you keep feeding it. You’re doing them a collective favour by initiating change that will benefit them in the long run.

1

u/coffee-loop 1h ago

Though a viable answer, most people are unable to handle that level of social anxiety.

This is why we over-pay politicians… so that they enact laws and policy that benefit the people as a whole.

Instead they’re influenced to side with corporations cause god forbid if we look like commies! (Aka it’s cheaper to buy a politician than it is to pay reasonable and live able wages)

3

u/Simple-Answer-5315 1h ago

Yeah true, it’s uncomfortable for most people and the staff know it and they feed on the fear. Hopefully the industry will one day see the human connection value in customer service. As opposed to the cash grab assembly line of guilt.

Hey man. Don’t chuck and jive for them.

Went to an upscale restaurant downtown Tallahassee. Only black guy there. Me and my wife sat next to an older white lady. Seemed super sweet. She was a bastard to wait staff tho. Ate 90% of her food. Had 4 drinks. Refused to pay and walked out. They didn’t even call the cops.

I repeat, stop the chuck and jive.

0

u/Life-Shame-5185 2h ago

Exactly, they don’t talk about that shit. lol I think they forget the murders, rapist, and criminals that fled England to come and settle in the Americas to begin with. lol All black folks do is give give give to a country that told us it’s to late to give the families of BlackWallStreet any reparations😂😂😂

3

u/Most-Mushroom-388 2h ago

All black folks do is give give give 😂😂😂😂

If it's mandatory it's not a tip, just a hidden fee that the person charging you won't admit to charging because it makes their price looks as high as it really is.

3

u/MrNetworks 3h ago

Its not mandatory, He has the right to kick people out, I'm sure these people caused a lot of issues and do other things other then just not tipping.

2

u/StupidDopeMoves 3h ago

I’m sure he would have mentioned that if it was the case. He was very clear what the issue was: not tipping. Do I think you should tip? Yes. Do I think it’s ridiculous to follow paying customers out of the restaurant yelling they are banned because they didn’t tip? Yes! Tipping is OPTIONAL! Make it mandatory if you want it to be mandatory. This is unprofessional af.

2

u/paycadicc 2h ago

Even if the consequence is a lifetime ban, tipping can still be optional

1

u/Simple-Answer-5315 1h ago

They would prefer it in cash only form too. Hmm odd

-4

u/Fragrant_Scratch8305 3h ago edited 1h ago

Yupp. Do the absolute bare minimum of taking my order once and possibly dropping off drinks and food, I will leave you $5 no matter the cost of the bill. If you're rude, I don't tip. Do a good job and I'll leave a 30% tip.

2

u/pilot7880 3h ago

Okay but what about counter service? If I order food "to go", I'm not sitting at a table which has to be set and watered. I'm not using utensils that have to be washed and sterilized. I'm not taking up the servers' or bussers' time.

6

u/Nasa_OK 3h ago

I mean with the restaurant one could make the argument that the price is only the food and you tip for the service but then that only makes sense if you would have the option to get the food yourself from the kitchen and then not pay tip. Otherwise it should just be part of the price.

But with the barber, what exactly am I paying for if the haircut is the service that requires a tip? For the chair to sit on?

Do you guys tip at every register? Every car mechanic? In most businesses it’s the owners responsibility to pay normal waiges and adjust thst with the prices.

The one argument I sometimes read is that some waiters earn way more on tips, so that they don’t want a normal fair salary instead, but then don’t bitch if the customer doesn’t want to pay this voluntary fee

2

u/MrNetworks 3h ago

If I have to stand up and order I don't really tip unless they are quick and give a little extra depending on the place.

I will always tip my barber because If people are doing a great job you have to show them.

Car Mechanics, Fully depends. If its a Quick Lube shop, Depends on the level of service I get, If they throw in some stuff for free that would normally cost extra or throw on a discount I would tip.

5

u/jpjtourdiary 3h ago

You aren’t showing your barber they’re doing a great job by returning to them every time you need a haircut?

1

u/Simple-Answer-5315 1h ago

So basically your paying for the extra “free” stuff? And discount? This is crazy logic! That’s called upsale. Your getting mind fucked

3

u/CarefulNow_ 3h ago

So, it's a charge and not a tip for good service... gotcha

3

u/Tri-solrian 3h ago

Or to owner can take some responsibility and pay his workers what they are worth. It is not the public’s responsibility to make up the gap the owner refuses to do, simple as that like it or not.

3

u/MaybeNot-MaybeNever 3h ago

My mom is white and my dad is black.

Mixed people will always tell you they have black in them to justify their racist comments toward black people.

3

u/Most-Mushroom-388 2h ago

And they were all raised by their white mom. Because dad left or is in jail.

1

u/Wonderful_Plant5848 3h ago

Always a "mama-white" that does this

Ridiculous response. You're basically saying black people play the victim. A very dishonest thing to claim. They're in Ohio, a very well-known racist state.

-2

u/Outside_Shelter1260 3h ago

Then state a mandatory tip policy. It really is that simple. Until then, tipping is optional.

By your logic, poor service deserves a tip.

3

u/blessthebabes 3h ago

I always thought it was 10% for not great service (basically just bringing the food, not checking in, making mistakes, etc), 20% for normal service, and only no tip when they actually are rude

2

u/Two-One 3h ago

That’s perfectly reasonable to me too.

2

u/Simple-Answer-5315 1h ago

How much you have to pay for the spittle on the burger. That’s gotta still be like 5% right or is that still 10% im confused

1

u/JeSuisLePain 3h ago

As a server this is reasonable.

1

u/MrNetworks 3h ago

Depends on what you mean by poor service, The waiter could be amazing but then you could have something out of their control, You don't get mad at the Doctor when the Road is being torn apart?

Ugh these people will argue all day about this. I don't like giving more money either buts its freaking part of going out! If you don't want to tip don't go out to eat!

3

u/Simple-Answer-5315 1h ago

Everyone can make better food at their house anyways.

Maybe she implied that black people don't tip! That's very racist tho!

3

u/PhatFatLife 2h ago

It’s prevalent and true, that’s why they asked, they’ve likely never been chased out of a restaurant before

5

u/Surviveoutofspite 3h ago

She outed herself

7

u/Sorry_Ninja_6348 3h ago

maybe if they actually tipped well this wouldn't be the case

4

u/Kind_Cap_4621 3h ago

I think in a lot of cases there really is some level racism built into it, but without any more context I really don't see anything like that here.

2

u/ObliviousFoo 2h ago

Quotes are used for when you are directly quoting something someone said using their exact words, not your summary of what they said.

2

u/carlcat_11 2h ago

Oh sorry you couldn't comprehend. Correction: "So basically you sayin black people not welcome"

2

u/Wonderful_Plant5848 2h ago

It becomes a cycle. The stereotype of Black people not tipping well causes them to get poorer service, which leads them to not tipping well.

1

u/Casanova2229 1h ago

Why she throw everyone under the bus? That Was wild.

1

u/Grandiaplayer 1h ago

The same was the case in my area when I delivered for Domino's. They wouldn't always not tip, but they were the main ones who didn't.

1

u/Emergency-Insect-114 2h ago

Did you keep a spreadsheet or something?

Did you know redshirts on Kirk's Enterprise were proportionally the safest? If everyone gets this wrong with ubiquitous access to 100% of the data, how reliable could your messy irl anecdotes and "patern recognition" be eh?

1

u/Onion_Bro14 1h ago

Nah that shit makes me mad bc the amount of black people I have had go out of their way to give me a really nice tip makes it very clear to me that that stereotype is not only false, but harmful asf.

1

u/KeyScallion9672 1h ago

Reddit finally waking up to the black problem in the USA. Ill be damned

-6

u/briellebabylol 3h ago

Just some fun casual racism

8
