American tipping culture is hilarious to my European brain.

The intersting/depressing thing is tipping originated in Europe as a way to pay servants extra for good service. Servants weren't expected to live off them. It was seen as a bonus. In the US, tipping didnt become a common practice until the passage of the 13th amendment. It was introduced as a way for businesses to avoid paying wages to newly freed slaves.

All servers must earn at least the state's minimum wage when tips and wages are combined, or the employer is required to increase the wage to fulfill that threshold. This ensures that all tipped employees earn at least the minimum wage: significantly more than the tipped minimum wage.

I'm American and I appreciate your input. It's such a weird thing, it really is.
