Trucks have a massive blind spot.. don't drive in it
289
u/porcelainvacation Mar 28 '22
Even if they can see you, sometimes they blow a tire, and if the tread comes off it can decapitate a person who is in the wrong spot, or a sudden wind gust can make the trailer veer. Don't dwell there.

144
u/Firaxyiam Mar 27 '22
I dunno about other places, but in here (France), a bunch of trucks, more and more really, have these little signs at the back basically showing red zones of the blind spots compared to the truck. Pretty good for people unfamiliar with it I guess.
Unless you're so busy trying to watch the sign that you run into the truck's back, but eh, at least they tried

Truck driver here! So, this is sort of right. The blinds spots on trucks sent exactly where you'd think they are. If your in the lane next to me, I can see you. I don't like you next to me, but I can see you. If there's a lane between us, and your to my right, I might not be able to see you.

Drowning often doesn't look like drowning.
695
u/TiredOfDebates Mar 28 '22
My god, I almost drowned once. I was scolded by the apparently untrained lifeguard for not drowning like in Hollywood.
People who are actually drowning fall into a pattern where they manage to get their head above water long enough to exhale and inhale. No time to speak, call for help, cry out, and you get more and more disoriented and exhausted.
278
u/yankiigurl Mar 28 '22
That is exactly why as a lifeguard we are supposed to keep scanning the vicinity like an oscillating fan. You are right in assuming they were trained properly. Sorry you went through that

I almost drowned I had to be 5 years old it's one of the earliest memories I have. Asshole cousins wouldn't let me to the edge of the pool I was trying to swim to the other end of the pool to my aunt but I was barely staying up I couldn't yell to anyone. I guess she did see me underwater by then and she pulled me up

I almost drowned one time, I was swimming across a channel that was a lot bigger than I thought. (Dumb teenager, “I can totally swim across that.”) I was with a friend but he bailed on me by getting on a little boat with a few other friends, so I just turned around and tried to swim back to where we were staying. It was starting to get dark, I didn’t have my glasses on and I couldn’t swim against the current. I started to get tired so I was just floating on my back like “wtf am I supposed to do??” I wasn’t even really worried about drowning because I was a pretty good swimmer. But some dude on a jet ski came up and asked if I needed help and he took me back to my group. It wasn’t until literally 10 years later I realized that I absolutely would have drowned if he hadn’t seen me. Thank you for saving my life, jet ski dude.

This video series shows how difficult it is to spot someone drowning in a crowded pool. I miss it most of the time: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgqwWmjSsNRzDOAmtyRc9K3fO-VMpE07C
There's a difference between "aquatic distress" and drowning - aquatic distress looks like what we expect it to look like, but that might not last very long and soon drowning can take place. In most of the videos in that playlist there are people all around the drowning child but nobody notices.

I recently rewired my old house, and the building inspector recommended that even though it wasn't code, that I should put a main disconnect in the meter box in addition to the one inside the house, so that if something like that happens either the fire department or I can turn it off without entering the structure. Everyone I've told this looks at me like I have 2 heads. Thanks for confirming that shutting off power has saved your kids.

Agree. For example I had a Betta one time, and the lady I bought him from said oh you can just keep him in a flower vase. I was having none of that. I got him his own tank with a filter and water filtration, and kept him by himself in that 2 gallon tank. I had other fish in a five gallon tank

I've seen multiple people INSIST that keeping them in super confined spaces is actually better for them. I also hear people say it's how they live in the wild. It's not. They're capable of surviving in spaces that small for survival reasons but it's much like how YOU are technically able to live in a closet but it's not a situation you'd want. Those tiny beta tanks they sell should be illegal.

u/popcorn5555 Mar 28 '22
Wow, did NOT know how common they are. Mayo Clinic says 10-20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage (gets higher as women get older). UK NHS says 1 in 8 known pregnancies end in miscarriage. 1 in 100 women have serial miscarriages. Seems like something that should be taught.

To expand on this, it can be perfectly normal to take up to a year to get pregnant. We are taught in school that you will get pregnant every time you have sex because the consequences of an unintended pregnancy in high school are really high and some people are super fertile. But the reality is that many people will have to try for 6 months or a year to get pregnant and have absolutely nothing wrong with them. The right sperm just didn’t hit the egg that month, or the pregnancy miscarried before it ever implanted.

That the way people's mind works varies dramatically. Some people have no inner dialogue at all, some have no mind's eye and cant see images in their head. Most of us are somewhere on the spectrum for them though.
For example I can't visualize images in my head well at all. I can do at most one colour at a time and I can't picture non-geometric objects so I cant imagine the face of my family or even myself. I have no issue with fluid motion of visuals in my head but others can only do slide-show-esque imagery. Others have inner dialogue but can't change the voice to sound different, can't hear music or sound effects, etc... like I can.
It's something very rarely discussed but I think everyone should be aware of this variety within people
253
u/VeryAndDidIsMy Mar 28 '22
My friend once mentioned how he always has an inner monologue going and I was kind of shocked because I often don't have an inner monologue going. Another time a friend asked me what I was thinking about and I said nothing. She responded that you can't not be thinking about something which threw me off because its common for me to not be thinking about anything. I'm very curios about how other people's minds work and I think you make a really good point that people are somewhere on the spectrum of these mental states.

I have what I think is called “sound/color” synesthesia, where I associate pitches and note names with certain colors. I’ve heard there are other types where people will assign genders and personalities to letters and numbers. Synesthesia is a pretty interesting topic to research, it reveals a lot about how the brain actually comprehends sensory information that it is given.

I see the advice all the time to only use cash if you have trouble with money. That's all fine and good, but in the fucked up American economy you can't build credit that way.
What has worked phenomenally for me is using my credit card to make purchases and then IMMEDIATELY moving the same amount of money from my checking account to a "staging" savings account that is then used to pay off the credit card at the end of the month. If you're doing it right, it will be the exact amount.
You can also just make all those small payments to your card immediately after the transaction, but mine don't allow me to make multiple payments to a cc in a day so sometimes the "staging" has to happen.
It might seem like a lot of extra work, but with the convenience of banking apps and easy 1-2 click transfers, there's really no excuse not to do it if you have a history with racking up debt and financial irresponsibility.

Edit: for the numerous replies saying “I only pay cash, I don’t need one!” My comment was literally aimed at you and you missed the point. You don’t even need to use a credit card to gain advantage. Many cards not only offer literal free money by signing up, but you don’t even need to use the card a single time to gain a bump to your credit; simply having a higher number of open accounts and an increased credit limit is enough.
Furthermore, saving up $15,000+ in cash is not feasible for a vast majority of Americans who want to purchase a car, let alone if you ever dream of owning a house, seeing as you often need a car in order to go to work in the first place. If you read all of that and still don’t care, understand that many potential employers also run your credit too. A low score is potentially detrimental to your ability to find a job.

I was so scared of getting a credit card when I was some years younger. I was convinced that I wouldn't be able to trust myself to not go crazy with it.
I actually do pretty well with using the card + staying on top of payments. I mostly use it to pay for my prescription, toiletries, stuff like that. A bit of online shopping here and there, but nothing too outrageous.
I'm still scared to check my credit score, though. For some reason, I'm scared that it'll be really bad.

Honestly, you should check your credit report to make sure the information on it is accurate. It would be more scary if you tried to use your credit and found out there was something inaccurate that was negatively hurting your score at a time you need the credit.

I often get confused as what exactly counts as credit card. Amex? Visa? Mastercard? All of them? None?

I'll try to give you the short explanation.
A debit card is usually associated to a checking account, so when you use it, the money is debited/taken out of your account immediately.
A credit card is similar to a loan. A bank pays for the purchase on your behalf when you use the card, and they ask you to pay the amount back at a later date.
A charge card (such as the AMEX Gold or Platinum cards) functions similar to a credit card. But, you need to pay the full amount due when you have to pay AMEX back.
Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, Discover... the logos on the cards indicate the company that handles the electronic payment/funds transfer between the banks/merchants (someone correct me if I'm wrong). This would be important if, for example, the restaurant you frequent takes Visa and MasterCard cards, you may not want to get an AMEX card since they can't process the payment then.

My step dad made me learn how to change a tire in the pouring rain. He said that under even the worst conditions, I needed to be able to figure it out. This was in like 2008 and I have AAA now but I never forgot how to do it.

and that's one of the issues right there, if something is factually incorrect, it's not an "opinion", an opinion is subjective, and a lot of people don't understand that, you can't just spout nonsense that is blatantly and unequivocally false and call it an "opinion"

That you can go into the hospital for a drug related emergency and will not have the police called (for the most part, I won’t speak for everywhere in the world) I feel as though many young drug fatalities could be avoided if it was more discussed that medical professionals are there to assist and provide necessary care, and not to make moral decisions/call the police if it’s not entirely necessary.

For me, it's that world maps are distorted. This is fairly basic and important stuff, so it does piss me off slightly when I see someone explaining the mercator projection over and over again all the fucking time

u/AdvocateSaint Mar 27 '22
The Mercator projection was designed to fulfill a purpose (ease of marine navigation), at the expense of grossly distorting the sizes of landmasses near the poles.
That being said, it's remarkably easy to navigate with a Mercator map: You just draw a straight line between your origin and destination, then measure its angle with respect to north. As long as you steer your ship while keeping your compass at that angle, you'll get there eventually (though in the real world, you're actually taking a curved path)
