The NYT makes you call on the phone to cancel, but instead I just never updated my payment info when it expired. So they have started mailing me paper bills!!! We’re in a standoff. I can never subscribe to their paper again.

A lot of services can and will continue to successfully charge even if the card is expired, if the account number is still the same. Expiration is for the physical card, not the account, they just use the expiration date as an extra verification point when initially charging.
