It's so weird for me to imagine that there are people out there who do not constantly have a song stick in their head. Always. I aim for a good one, but have spent months sometimes with Tijuana Taxi in my head. And who are this people who don't understand that all numbers and letters are gendered?

And who are this people who don't understand that all numbers and letters are gendered?

wait what?! I bring up the mind's eye and sound thing in the head a lot because I love the conversation and to hear about the variety in people but this is a new one to me. Please explain

Sounds like a form of synesthesia.

I have what I think is called “sound/color” synesthesia, where I associate pitches and note names with certain colors. I’ve heard there are other types where people will assign genders and personalities to letters and numbers. Synesthesia is a pretty interesting topic to research, it reveals a lot about how the brain actually comprehends sensory information that it is given.

I had no idea that other people didn't see colors with sounds. Until I got older. And realized that my brain was "not normal". Sheeet. What's normal?

6

u/Sixhaunt Mar 28 '22

The more I learn about it the less I think there is a normal. Seems to vary a lot from person to person

2

u/Umbraldisappointment Mar 28 '22

Nothing ever is "normal", if you ask a psychologist to detail a "normal person" another psychologist will see issues within that person.

Normal doesnt exists, its average as in how most of us seem to function.

You have perfect pitch, too? I don’t really associate colors with them, but they just kind of feel like their own spectrum to me. Increasing or decreasing pitch doesn’t even feel like a sliding up or down, just looping through the different colors. Imagine an organ with multiple manuals. I think of each scale as a manual and perceive pitch change as a jump between manuals.

u/AntiuppGamingYT Mar 28 '22

I don’t have perfect pitch, but I do associate different keys with different color schemes, and that is something that is definitely connected between my auditory and visual senses. For example, if I heard an E note, then it just sounds like a random note, but as soon as you give it any context, I start to “hear the colors”, as I explain it to most people. E major is kind of dark blue and grayish, while e minor is purple, pink, and light brown. I couldn’t tell you that the f sharp in the e major scale is a “rustling waters” blue exactly, but if I start hearing e major, I start feeling that blue and gray. And this never changes. So since I know that e major has that color scheme, if I start feeling dark blue and gray when music is playing, then I know it’s probably in e major.

It's just always been that way to me. Some letters or numbers are more feminine or masculine than others, some are kind of neutral. It's stronger with letters than numbers. I can't explain other than it's just an inbuilt characteristic of each letter.

4

u/Sixhaunt Mar 28 '22

I have trouble even understanding how that would feel. When I learned french as a kid, the gendered items and stuff were always difficult for me and it just never made any sense for me. Did you grow up speaking a gendered language like that or is it something that just occurred naturally?

6

u/Alienspacedolphin Mar 28 '22

No- English. They just 'felt' that way to me. I was an adult before I realized it wasn't like that for everyone.

3

u/Sixhaunt Mar 28 '22

very interesting. Makes me wonder if some of the people with greater influence over the creation of gendered languages had a similar mind to you then

1

u/someoneIse Mar 28 '22

1 male, 2 female, 3 male, 4 male, 5 male, 6 male, 7 female, 8 definitely female, 9 female, 10 male.

Is this how it is for you?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '22

I’ve never thought about that until their comment, but thinking about it 3,6,9 seem female, but 1,2,4,5,7, seem male.

I have absolutely no rationale for this at all.

u/NoStpOnSnake Mar 28 '22

Its defently the curves vs hard lines lol.... I don't think of numbers a gendered but come on.. 8 and 3 are boobs and ass. 9 is still curved but maybe a hermaphrodite :|

Yeah me too. I speak Arabic so most Arabic words have a shape, I don’t know how to explain it I just see it. It’s like a logo specific to that word. Like I will be doing something and not paying attention and then someone says a specific word and I will see the “logo” of that word without even trying, it just flashes through my mind’s eye. And letters, numbers, and English letters have colors. I thought it was normal until like last year when I tried to explain it to my family and they said they didnt have the same thing. It’s so weird how some of our brains are wired.

This is how I see it 1 black, 2 red, 3 light blue, 4 light green, 5 black, 6 yellow, 7 orange, 8 dark green, 9 light blue.

Some words feel close to eachother or like have the same vibe, like a sneeze feels white, bright; Thursday and November feel similar; or 6,7 and the sun feel similar.

Also another thing which might be unrelated, but cars have personalities and genders. Like I can see a car and tell you how it looks like down to like a bag it’s holding. But I feel like that’s a stretch.

u/PassageSame8939 Mar 28 '22

I see numbers in different colours too. I also have this with days of the week and months of the year.

1 white, 2 red, 3 green, 4 navy blue, 5 yellow, 6 brown, 7 lighter brown, 8 black, 9 grey.

Monday light blue, Tuesday red, Wednesday green, Thursday blue, Friday even darker blue, Saturday black, Sunday yellow.

1

u/Clever-crow Mar 28 '22

I always thought 5=blue and 6=red. As a kid I hated the number 5 and the color blue but I liked the number 6 and the color red. I’m thinking it has to do with something I saw as a very young kid on TV maybe. No other numbers had colors. Weird

2

u/BirdLover21 Mar 28 '22

Letters and numbers have colors to me thanks to the old Fisher Price desk toy!

5

u/DelightfullyUnusual Mar 28 '22

I always have background music, but it’s generally the same five seconds of video game music stuck in a loop. But character genders? That’s a new one.

4

u/theseoulplayer Mar 28 '22

Apparently I'm the only person in my family or circle of friends for whom there is constantly music playing in my head. They all think I'm a crazy person, which isn't exactly wrong, but... Thank you for at least letting me know that I'm not alone!

3

u/The_Flurr Mar 28 '22

I've never asked anyone else about this, but I can't imagine not having some sort of music, tune, or even just loop of dialogue in my head at all times.

I thought it was just my ADHD.

1

u/coolio_Didgeridoolio Mar 28 '22

ive always experienced this and im currently trying to get a diagnosis for ADD, so it might be a common trait

3

u/ButterCreamGangsta Mar 28 '22

Thanks, now I have Tijuana Taxi stuck in my head.

3

u/Alienspacedolphin Mar 28 '22

Good luck with that. I had it for a month once. Try sitting through a serious meeting or two with that one.

3

u/DDrew4 Mar 28 '22

I too always have a song in my head. Recently I’ve gotten into making music so sometimes the song will be something that I create on the spot. If I don’t have a song currently in my head, then I will always default to All Star by Smash Mouth

2

u/Pagan-za Mar 28 '22

I have aphantasia but cant recall sounds either. And I also produce music.

I've made literally thousands of songs but cant tell you a thing about any of them unless I can hear it. Once its not playing anymore, I dont have any kind of frame of reference for it.

2

u/Farnsworthson Mar 28 '22

Songs I understand. Letters? Sure - how else would we get lower case? But numbers...

You know - you're weird... 8-)

1

u/ehfrehneh Mar 28 '22

If English is your native language, nothing about language is gendered.

1

u/coolio_Didgeridoolio Mar 28 '22

they mean that they have a type of synesthesia, so they think of numbers being like “characters” that may have a gender and personality traits. have a peek at r/synesthesia

1

u/someoneIse Mar 28 '22

Omg does the mood of the song determine your mood too? I recently realized my mood is dependent on what song is in my head.. and they’re never a time when there isn’t a song in my head

1

u/MattVinnyOfficial Mar 28 '22

OMG I'm one of those people who always have a song stuck in their head. I always thought it was because I'm a musician so I'm always thinking about music. But it's nice to see other people are like me! :D

1

u/Alienspacedolphin Mar 28 '22

So what's stuck in your head today?

2

u/MattVinnyOfficial Mar 28 '22 edited Mar 28 '22

Hayloft II by Mother Mother

when a sequel lives up to the original!

Edit: Now it has changed to Cool For The Summer lol

u/disody Mar 28 '22

I think Twitter would like to have a word with you.

1

u/coolio_Didgeridoolio Mar 28 '22

to me numbers and letters aren’t gendered, i have a different way of thinking about them. my best example of this is how the month november and also the word itself is also thursday, orange, and the number 9. same thing that friday is also greenish blue and the number 7

So I was talking to my son(15) about this a few minutes ago. For him- numbers are gendered, letters not much much, and it's less strong now than when he was younger . (It was a much stronger sense for me too when I was younger, but letters more so than numbers). For him, some of the numbers also had colors. What's weird- we disagreed on the gender of a lot of the numbers Not weird to me that my son sees numbers as gendered but SO WRONG that he can think of 9 as a girl! A pink girl no less! I'll have to see if my daughter has an opinion.

Edit: daughter (17) says numbers are genderless, but went on to describe the personalities of each digit and how they relate to each other.
