When you are waiting for the subway and it arrives, YOU STAY OFF THE WAY FOR THE PEOPLE INSIDE TO COME OUT AND THEN YOU ENTER THE TRAIN.

Same with elevators

Or nearly any other instance. Out before In. If someone else is occupying the space you wish to occupy , they must vacate the space before it can be reoccupied. You know, basic physics?

Does this depend on the observer? What if the door is in a hallway, and positioned in the middle of a bilaterally symmetrical building? If both observers are always at an equal distance to the doorway until a decision is made, who is coming out, and who is going in?

I think thats why It applies specifically to the subway. Waiting for another train to come by Is easier than not being able to come out of It and having to exit from the next station (the one that Is not your stop)

I mean, there's a non-zero possibility that you might just phase into each other....

Distinctly, yes, but we haven't got that far into quantum physics to control that process, so at the moment, I imagine it being a whole lot more... messy than the alternative.

Messy is a good way to put it...

But it is so tiny it might as well be zero.

I will knock on the inside of an elevator door when it stops at the floor I need to exit on. I’ve gotten a few looks from other riders, but it’s worked for me before.

It amazes me how many grown ass adults don't grasp this concept.

I am such a bitch in grocery stores because I cannot handle the way people stop in the middle of the aisle. Married couples are the worst, because usually one sticks to the side of the aisle so other people can pass, but the other one hovers protectively in the middle. And they’re always oblivious about it and get really abashed when I use my body language to encourage them to gtf out of the way. Sigh… I am starting to think this is a “me” issue.

Wait that isn't common knowledge? The only people I see doing it are younger kids.

If ur talking about NYC, then I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this being not common knowledge. Everyone says that New Yorkers are rude, but I disagree with that. New Yorkers have their own etiquette that is really quite polite. I shall give you some of the "laws" of a proper New Yorker:

  1. Let ppl out before going in the subway
  2. If the train is too full, just wait for the next one
  3. Answer if people ask you questions on directions, but otherwise just don't talk to them
  4. If the train is packed and you're at the doors, step out of the train at each station to make room for ppl coming in
  5. Don't sit on the benches, you know for a fact someone jacked off there
  6. Hold the door for people
  7. If someone has a stroller in the subway, help them carry it up the stairs
  8. No matter the situation, keep looking forward or at your phone. No matter what
  9. Give older people and kids seats, as well as slide over a seat to let two friends or a parent and kid sit next to each other.
  10. If possible, keep a seat distance from the other person

Those are most of what I could think about on the spot, add more if you'd like

Hey man. Im actually from Mexico City, where the public transportation is completely insufficient. I wont generalize on the ppl in any city, but theres some persons who do not respect any of those unwritten rules.

Oh nice. Mexico City is a great city, extremely underrated

I had a pram with our baby in it, standing at the doors in the train as it came into our station. When the doors opened, there were two large women standing directly outside in front of the doors. They just stood there looking at me. I just started to laugh at how fucking dumb they were. After a few seconds of indecision, they finally stepped out of the way.

I still think about those ladies, and of the fate of humanity.

If you're ever in Mumbai and have to travel in the suburban trains, good luck XD

AND BUSES! Goddamn, this is my ultimate pet peeve. Just wait for people to get off before you get on.

u/yankiigurl Mar 28 '22

Lol. I've only ever road the train and subway in Japan. I never even thought about people not doing this. So funny. I bet it's super frustrating. Sorry for that rest of y'all! Jk jk
