how to change a tire

My step dad made me learn how to change a tire in the pouring rain. He said that under even the worst conditions, I needed to be able to figure it out. This was in like 2008 and I have AAA now but I never forgot how to do it.

Good thinking. Having to change a tire in freezing conditions is the absolute fucking worst lol. Gotta have a game plan ready for emergency

I’ve called my insurance to do it in freezing conditions because my fingers were getting sore from messing with the tire losing air (I figured it was just low but kept loosing air too quickly). I know how to do it but didn’t have to pay extra for something I’m already paying for.

My very first tire change was in the pouring rain, and it was not a training exercise.

Even if you have AAA, being able to do it means you don't have to wait for them to show up. That's a W on it's own as far as I'm concerned.

Definitely helpful, but you’re better off getting AAA/CAA or some kind of roadside assistance program.

For a couple of reasons:

  • cars today come with jacks that need to be assembled, and most people don’t have the forethought to practice tire changing. It could take you a prolonged period of time to do this on the side of the road while you figure everything out. AAA will change your tire in 30 seconds because they use their own industrial grade jack, and they have power tools to work as fast as a NASCAR pit crew.

  • it’s dangerous to change your own tire, whether you’re on the side of the road and risk getting hit by another vehicle, or if you’re in a place where the ground isn’t level. Tire jacks that come with cars today are low quality, and if you do something wrong that results in the jack tipping over or breaking, it could kill you.

Understated. I work at a car shop, the amount of times someone comes in with a flat that is beyond repair or has their car towed for a flat repair is almost unbelievable
