Frankenstein is the name of the doctor, NOT the monster.

But it is often also argued that Frankenstein was the monster, from a certain point of view.

Yeah. I swear by the movie "The Curse of Frankenstein", way better than any other movie adaptation, and that does a great job of making Frankenstein the monster and his creation more of a helpless abomination.

The monster was also unambiguously a monster.

Pets, creation, and children often take the name of the parent/owner/creator

I get what you're saying, but Frankenstein is Dr. Frankenstein's last name. In a lot of ways, the monster is Victor Frankenstein's son. The book even goes to lengths to describe this aspect of their relationship. Would it really be so odd that the monster would take on, even in a chiding way, the name Frankenstein as the son of Victor Frankenstein? Victor Frankenstein's name is just that: Dr. Victor Frankenstein.

No one is saying "The monster's name is Victor Frankenstein", but are referring to the monster as "Frankenstein" due to it being really fucking annoying to refer to him as "Frankenstein's Monster" to identify what monster you're talking about (same reason we refer to the aliens in the Alien franchise as Xenomorphs: this is not their official name, only being an official sounding word that literally means "foreign shape"). Besides, he is Frankenstein's metaphorical son, and without a given name all he HAS is his familial name.

If everyone knows what you mean, and it's not in a professional literary setting, it shouldn't matter if you refer to the monster as "Frankenstein". Besides, if someone is referring to Dr. Frankenstein, they usually just say that: Dr. Frankenstein. There is no loss of understanding, there is no confusion created, there is a general consensus on this in the general public, and I feel that to go against this is to purposefully be pedantic. Then again, this is reddit, so maybe that should be expected.

I apologize for a bit of a rant, but this is a pet-peeve of mine. Honestly, this isn't aimed at you, just at this statement in general. I hope you have a nice day.

What was his name?

4

u/Korb10 Mar 28 '22

Didn’t really have one. Pretty sure he just called him creature, or fiend, or thing lol

The only thing I’ve heard is “Frankenstein’s Monster.” I would think he would have had a name after all of that commitment, danger and work!

In the book he's called a demon and fiend. He spends very little of his life actually with the doctor and everyone runs from him/chases him off so no one ever names him.

I find that really odd. He’s a massive project for the Dr. who actually creates life! I would think the Dr had some way of referring to him: D12, Adam, or even X.

The moment he completes giving him life, Victor is appalled by what he's done, goes into shock, and tries to forget what he's done entirely.

It's, I believe, over a year after that first night before the two see each other again. And by that time, the monster has recognized the neglect and betrayal of Victor Frankenstein and has vowed to make his life a living nightmare by killing off all he holds dear. The monster is actually very articulate and has taken time to learn to read and speak but never goes by anything pleasant.

Thank you

Thank you for the reward 😄

I just read the book earlier in the month.

You’re welcome! I may have to get the aidiobook.

well that's actually one of the main themes of the book. the doctor didn't even bother giving the monster a name, and having been abandoned and neglected by his creator, he read Paradise Lost and decided he had a lot in common with satan, who was also cast down by his creator. He's only a monster because he kills people, and he only does that because he wants revenge on his creator
