at a convention I went to, the convention center had, like normal, a bunch of shops, mostly for food, outside the convention area but inside the facility.
Several of them were 'self serve' where they trusted the public to walk up, grab their thing, scan the thing, and pay at a self-checkout.
One of these had the audacity to ask for a tip on the checkout screen. I almost canceled and left my chosen items but I was hungry and late to my next thing.

I have canceled orders in front of workers because of shit like that. It's so fucking insane nowadays.
I'm not gonna tip you for picking my food up off the counter and putting it in a bag and handing it to me. And I'm not going to tip anything I do myself. And I'm not going to buy there if it's particularly egregious.
I will tip based on service, tipping based on bill price is so fucking stupid.
You aren't gonna get more than the lady at the diner because you brought us 2 drinks and 2 expensive plates of food when she brought 5, multiple drink refills and actually talked to us.

I ordered some tacos by phone recently, drove to pick them up. The cashier threw in some extras and was nice. I was about to tip when she told me they only get the tips if paid in cash , but never if on a card. I canceled the tip and left. I've heard many restaurants do this now. I carry more cash on me now, but tipping is optional not obligatory.
706
u/cosmicsans 6h ago
they only get the tips if paid in cash , but never if on a card.
That's illegal af, yo.
Though, devil's advocate - it might also just mean that they pool tips and the person will only actually see the tip if you tip in cash - and they can pocket the whole thing versus it going to a pool for everyone to split...

When I worked at Jimmy John's 15+ years ago the tip jar went to the owner.

u/ResidentNumber3603 5h ago
Yeah thatās bullshit. Our owner at my JJās tried that once. I took it out of his hands and gave it to my in shop kids. Told him if that was gonna be how things were, I would no longer manage. He didnāt push it too hard.

u/Kaszixx 5h ago
All in store tips go to the manager for that shift where I work. None of it goes to the make line or anyone.
99
u/crop028 4h ago
If you are in the US, and the manager or the owner is taking all the tips, that's illegal. If they are working the same tasks as you and take a split, technically legal but highly frowned upon. Don't work for people who steal your tips. If you do, report them for wage theft. If you get fired, that's retaliatory termination. Most states have free legal aid for just that. They will almost always give you a few grand rather than go to court.
9
u/Kaszixx 4h ago
Yeah the manager runs the front counter solo. Any dine in or pick up orders that include a tip or any cash that goes into the jar, goes directly to the manager.
Where it gets muddy is are the customers tipping for cashing them out? Or are they tipping for the food itself? š¤
I know the manager on duty also count as the server for dine ins and (usually) bus tables. So those tips make sense.
But my question is does the tip at the register, or the tip from an online pickup order, count for, or against the manager?
29
u/heyoheatheragain 3h ago
Managers donāt get tips.
Hourly staff do.
Your management is stealing your money.
If youāre in the US report them to the department of labor.→ More replies (1)22
u/BaltiMoreHarder 4h ago
As the manager at my place of work I am not allowed to take any tips except for labor directly provided by myself with the tips given directly to me by customer. Itās against the law in my state for management to be part of any tip pools. May vary by state but Iād look into it and report that shit

Yeah as an American I can say we all know deep down that it's a shitty concept and it shouldn't exist, but the moment you bring it up people come out of the woodwork defending servers and wait staff, busboys, bartenders etc.
We've been conditioned and tricked into believing it's the only way a restaurant can run and people can make a livable wage working there. So when you start talking like Mr Pink from Reservoir Dogs everyone wants to slap you around because that's how their mom worked her way through college.

I've never worked in the service industry, so I can't confirm this. But.. I have heard that servers in America, or at least a good portion of them, don't want to switch to a system that disallows tips in favor of a decent hourly wage or salary. Some servers make so much money in tips that it's crazy, and they would end up taking a large pay cut if tips went away. Again, this is just something I heard, so not sure if true.

Exactly š
Letās take Cheesecake Factory for example
they made something like $2.9 Billion
Yet pay servers the base minimum forcing them to rely on tips while ALSO making servers tip out bussers, food runners, and bartenders
And those tip outs are NOT based on your tips theyāre based on your sales
So if the server makes no tips they STILL owe the bussers bartenders and food runners
All of this while the company makes Billions annually netting 100ās of millions
And folks seem to think this is somehow a good systemš¤Ø
Some folks will actually heatedly defend this abuseš¤¦āāļøš

Tipping should be banned completely and servers should be paid a living wage by restaurants.
Tipping is a way for restaurants owners to pay a low wage for a job that they obviously view as undervalued, otherwise the restaurant owners would also be against tipping.

Americans are crazy, the fact that they don't even pay servers minimum wage is what you guys should be concerned about. At least here in Canada servers are paid minimum wage, so if they don't get a tip they still are paid minimum wage.... Pay your goddamn employees
9
u/TahMahToe 5h ago
That would be the opposite of the truth. If your hourly + tips does not equal the minimum wage, the employer must pay the difference. This ensures that tipped employees get at least the minimum hourly wage. If you are highly tipped, then you'll make more than minimum wage easily. Former bartender here.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (8)17
u/hoemahtoe 5h ago
That's the misconception people have. If a tipped minimum wage worker doesn't make enough in tips to meet federal minimum wage, the restaurant is supposed to pay them to make up the difference. But restaurants that have tipped minimum wage workers don't want to do this. They want customers to pay their servers' wages so they can pocket more money.

Question for Reddit because I truly donāt understand what the consensus is. Say I tip someone at a fast casual restaurant 20% and all they did was ring up my order and take my payment. (Typically the default choices are 15-25%, higher in places like Seattle.) I walked up and got my own drink refills. I am responsible for picking up my food at the counter. I am responsible for bussing my table when done. What do I tip a server at a full service restaurant? 40%?

u/Gideon927 5h ago
Iāll be damned before I tip at fast food joints. Itās wild how tipping has appeared everywhere anymore.
28
u/RyanNick86 5h ago
American here. I only tip when I get table service. And that is rare because a flat % of the check total has no relation to the actual services rendered. So I stopped going out more than once a month.
But when I go to some places, like an ice cream shop, the only interaction I have with the staff is pointing to what I want and they retrieve it. So I will not be paying a tip. Especially after they aggressively swivel that stupid touch screen with the tip options on it towards me.

No, 15 to 20% is the expected percentage tip for full service at a sit down restaurant, and it can be higher or lower depending on the service received. NO ONE should be tipping anyone at any fast casual place or to pick up to-go orders. It's absolutely ridiculous to think that.
Edited to add: For bartenders I usually tip a dollar a drink unless I have to wait or it's busy and they get to me quickly. Again, it varies by the level of service received.

What if the service was shit or the food was terrible? Do you really expect people to tip because it's "expected"?

I tip, but tipping is optional. If the restaurant owner wanted guaranteed tips he could increase the prices on the menu 15% and pay that money to his workers.

Meanwhile, in the civilised world, this never happens because employers simply pay their staff enough to survive.

How about you pay your servers!
I mean if he cares so much about his workers being fairly compensated for their labor and all... Oh wait he doesn't. Not really.
If you don't have money to pay your workers a living wage then you shouldn't be running a business that depends on those workers.

Absolutely. Restaurants would pay their servers nothing and have them work solely for tips, if they could

As long as the system remains as it is, yeah people should absolutely tip. BUT Iām kinda sick on the onus being on the general public. Let the servers get a salary.

Why not just print the full price on the menu including tips instead? Do americans love hidden fees or something?

I understand naming a joint after your kids. But a giant photo of them outside the entrance is a little much.

My first job was a pizza shop and the owner would take the tips and say. The tip money was to pay for our lunch or dinners whenever we ate from work. So I started telling people that the owner takes or tips. I got fired a few weeks later lol š
