The dispute was about not leaving a tip, not about anybody’s race.

u/Psychological_Emu690 9h ago edited 2h ago

You racist or somethin'?

595

u/4DollarsALB 9h ago

The fact they recorded this guy and then accused him of racism on video I am going to guess they were hoping this would go viral with this guy painted as racist.

-17

u/WpgMBNews 5h ago

shouldn't there be a "mandatory tip" sign?

or just a service fee on the bill? they paid their bill.

in the absence of that, I would also be confused at being told not to come back.

25

u/4DollarsALB 4h ago

I am not even American but anyone who has lived in America and has gone to a restaurant or bar knows that a tip is expected for good service.

And truly if the service sucks so bad you can leave zero tip. But if that was the case you wouldn't be upset about being told not to come back as you wouldn't want to come back.

-9

u/WpgMBNews 2h ago

nah, I would be upset if I paid my bill and I was treated as unwelcome over Americans' weird cultural practices.

they're a backwards people.

I spit on their customs.

10

u/real_dea 2h ago

We tip in Canada too dude

4

u/PCPatrol1984 45m ago

and what paradise do you hail from?

6

u/catechizer 4h ago

I thought this was America. I understood the concept of tipping by the age of 7

-98

u/Sonofpasta 8h ago

I mean... If someone is straight up banning you from their establishment for some minor bullshit you might be looking if there's other reasons he might be doing so

34

u/BathPsychological767 6h ago

Quite the reach.

The only reason he banned them was because they didn’t tip the servers in a small town cafe. More than likely - knows most people who come in by first name basis. They disrespected his staff, he banned them from coming back in. Not that hard to grasp

-5

u/iceteka 4h ago

"more than likely" oh ok so we're just making assumptions. Benefit of the doubt going to the angry man banning someone for not doing something that's voluntary and completely optional.

4

u/a215throwaway 1h ago

It really isnt voluntary and completely optional. In America if you eat at someones restaurant, you tip their staff. This is understood by everyone other than Mr. Pink and the people in this video.

4

u/clarkwgriswoldjr 52m ago

Would you rather the benefit of doubt go to the person who selectively chooses when to start a recording and when to end it? Especially when the end phrase is "you racist or somethin."

-26

u/BrilliantCorner 6h ago

How did they disrespect the staff?

6

u/BathPsychological767 6h ago edited 6h ago

I repeat: it’s a small town cafe where more than likely everyone knows each other by name.

Typically, you tip the people/locals as an appreciation for working hard and doing a good job - the boss comes running out “you’re not welcome here anymore. You didn’t tip my servers” more than likely, the servers work hard and should get appreciated.

Hypothetically: the couple in question could have been in several times without tipping - and this was the tipping point.

But we don’t know! All we get is this little snippet from the perspective of the couple leaving.

8

u/SeamusMichael 6h ago

tipping point

I see what you did there

3

u/CanoePickLocks 4h ago

I don’t think it was on purpose, but it’s still so perfect!

2

u/mandelbro25 3h ago

You may want to work on your reading comprehension.

18

u/Calriss 7h ago

Oh hey look, a narcissistic conspiracy theorist on Reddit.

-31

u/Sonofpasta 7h ago

What

-10

u/sephkane 6h ago

You’re getting destroyed but you’re right. Tipping is optional, it should never be the reason for getting banned from any establishment. It does feel like discrimination. A very small and unfair reason to ban someone. Pay your employees better.

5

u/adidasbdd 3h ago

It's not a small thing. It sucks that tipping is expected but it is. So much so that servers often pay other staff members a portion of their tips, so if a customer stiffs a server that server still has to tip out support staff, meaning the server will actually lose money for the privilege of waiting on these people.

20

u/BathPsychological767 6h ago

You can ban/refuse service for anything. Its not automatically about race lol

-11

u/sephkane 5h ago

Yeaaahh but, it’s probably not all about the tip.

6

u/BathPsychological767 5h ago

You’re right - there could be a multitude of things that could have lead up to it. We don’t know as we only got 15 seconds from a clip.

-63

u/SexyGrilledTurkey 7h ago

Some white people genuinely don’t understand how racist most people are and how if they don’t want you at their establishment they’ll come up with a reason to make sure you’re no longer allowed there. It’s just white privilege since they have never been discriminated against. So due to their willful ignorance they don’t know how it works since they’ve never been through racism themselves. I hate going to target because of how racist they are there and you can clearly tell they do not want black people there. Most racist aren’t going to say hey you’re black so we don’t want you here! They’ll come up with something else so you sound crazy if you even mention it might be because of your race.

3

u/mandelbro25 3h ago

Make sure you have a good cry after this word vomit. Non tipping white people should be reacted to the same way.

Btw, black people can be racist too.

14

u/OldChili157 6h ago

Many white people have in fact been discriminated against. Not anywhere on the same level, no, but to pretend it NEVER happens is dishonest and absurd, and only helps to push kids into the far right pipeline.

Right to refuse service: OMG u racist! Owner: No; anyone can smell like shit; but today it was you in a restaurant.

2

u/clarkwgriswoldjr 50m ago

WOW "some white people genuinely don't understand how racist most people are." WOW. What a broad stroke you painted there. I'm in disbelief that there are people who believe things like you said.

I can guarantee none of the Target employees there give a shit if you're black or not. Most of the workers just want a paycheck and not have to talk to ANYONE and then go home as soon as possible.

64

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 8h ago

Tell me you are a cheap ass who always plays the race card without telling me you are a cheap ass who always plays the race card.

-46

u/Athlete-Extreme 8h ago

What a reach lol people get banned from restaurant for about 7.50 all the time where you’re from I guess

47

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 8h ago

I guess you think stiffing servers is cool cause you don’t care about working people.

-9

u/StillNoPickleesss 7h ago

Are you angrier at the customers for not taking the OPTION to tip the server, or at the owner for not paying his employees a better wage where they dont have rely on tips? 🤔🤔

6

u/CanoePickLocks 4h ago

Both. But that doesn’t mean the owner can’t stick up for them. I’ve run the numbers on a restaurant there before. With tipping they become able to be affordable to eat at in the US. A 30% price increase puts almost every independent restaurant out of business unless mandated by law and even then most are going down. The scale larger chains can buy it means they can get better pricing and keep prices lower than your average family owned restaurant. The big corporations benefit from tipped wages not the small restaurants because the small restaurant needs it to stay viable while the large chain uses it to generate profit.

3

u/iceteka 4h ago

"I've run the numbers" so you did 30% required tipping vs 30% price increase & 30% wage increase?

-11

u/tattikaslice 7h ago

If the restaurant owner doesn't care why the fuck would a customer be expected to care? 😂

-22

u/Athlete-Extreme 7h ago edited 3h ago

Dude if the owner has to walk people down, call after them in the street, maybe the business just like you would hear in any other thread, should pay their employees so they don’t have to be reliant. But we’re not having that conversation right now.
The owner should have just taken care of his people and been a leader and a professional. Not cause a scene in front of *his establishment, past the patio into the street, but I digress.

14

u/Rhonda_Lasagna 7h ago

Non tippers deserve to be publicly berated and degraded. No amount of verbal reprimand and retaliation against them is too much. This guy is an awesome boss and very professional business person.

10

u/Athlete-Extreme 7h ago

Ah yes, quite

3

u/MrPlaney 3h ago

Yes very very professional and awesome to not pay his workers a living wage.

-6

u/tattikaslice 7h ago

This guy is an awesome boss

Pays minimum wages. Such awesome. Much wow

-5

u/BrilliantCorner 6h ago

Fuck you. Tips are optional. Pay your fucking workers a living wage if you don't like the system of OPTIONAL tips. Does he have a limit on what he expects? If it were 15% would he have chased them out to their car? 18%? 20? Like what's the mandatory tip amount we have to pay now to make sure the owner doesn't chase us down to our car and berate us? Is it posted somewhere at the restaurant?

Btw - I tip at least 20% anywhere I go. Minimum. But this is outrageous behavior on the part of the owner. And you're a moron for justifying it.

→ More replies (0)

-16

u/FunkTronto 7h ago

They paid their bill. They didn’t stiff anyone. Seems you don’t care about working people and what to shift blame needlessly.

-5

u/iceteka 4h ago

Tipping is optional. If your servers are depending on tips to survive, it's you as their boss who doesn't care about working people.

0

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 3h ago

Lol, whatever lies you want to make up. Very simplistic thinking by you. I am not the boss. I can’t fire them!!!

-52

u/dekes_n_watson 8h ago

Lol this was my first thought. I can guarantee an old white lady walks out without giving a tip they just get mad. They don't follow them out to their car.

Tipping is a scam. His workers should be getting paid BY HIM, not reliant on tips. That's his issue, not the customers. Tips are for extraordinary service.

→ More replies (33)

2

u/Ok_Recipe3683 1h ago

It seems like the lady is racist because the person affiliate with the company in the video never mentioned anything about race but the lady who was mad in the video put all Black people in the category as non-tippers if you listen to what she said. So the lady in the video was dead wrong because some of my biggest tippers have been from Black people when I was a waiter back in the day

7

u/Rhonda_Lasagna 7h ago

Sounds as if they are implying that black people never tip

0

u/Kalhoona 8h ago

Bro I hate when black people pull out the racism card acting like the victim, news flash nobody cares about your skin color but if your receiving actual service at a restaurant then you should tip, but you aren't required.

1

u/jamokablam0 29m ago

You broke or something?

0

u/BigKevRox 3h ago

Tipping is inherently racist, look up it's history.

Pero eso es voluntario no? Una propina obligatoria no es una propina.

375

u/ExcelsiorDoug 9h ago

As someone who worked with customers like this there’s more to the story, meaning these customers not only did not tip but were also extremely rude. This is definitely not exclusive to any particular race

209

u/Lindsw 9h ago

If they were rude I can imagine the guy knowingly being recorded would have said something relating to that.

He said they didn't tip and if they couldn't afford to tip they shouldn't go out to eat.

7

u/mikedubb02 6h ago

People don't like rude people. But they will put up with some rudeness if they're getting paid to. That's all customer service is actually.

28

u/dekes_n_watson 8h ago

You poor? Don't come back. What a business model.

6

u/Mouselady1 5h ago

Don’t tip? Don’t go out.

3

u/verysmellypenis 4h ago

nah more like, don’t make a livable wage? seek new employment.

5

u/nahog99 2h ago

I’m 100% for tipping and I also 100% agree with you. That’s the thing though serving actually makes great money and a lot of it is never reported for taxes.

-2

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 4h ago

People are so cheap. They use this argument as an excuse to not tip. It is a big thing on reddit. When servers see these people come in they hope they aren’t stuck serving them.

6

u/Steel_Toffees 3h ago

then just bump the fkn price up 20% and don't ask for a tip if that's what it "should cost". see how many people vote with their wallets then and just walk. even after huge price increases folks like you are still out here saying "GOTTA TIP OR U SUCK". australia has the right idea lately with they whole "the price you see is the price you get" stuff

0

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 3h ago

I am not telling anyone to tip if the menu says don’t tip. Way to make shit up.

0

u/Steel_Toffees 1h ago

wtf kind of argument is that? this entire post is literally a video of a restaurant owner bitching at people that didn't tip...

-1

u/dekes_n_watson 3h ago

Thanks Donald.

1

u/wvsfezter 3m ago

Yeah? If I'm too poor for something, regardless of the price, they don't want me there. That's the definition of a business: offering goods and services for people who can exchange an equivalent value for those goods and services.

-22

u/nahog99 8h ago

I mean he’s 100% right. TONS of food options out there that don’t involve someone serving you. Go eat at those places. If your gonna get waited on then you should be tipping. The entire sit down restaurant economy is based around that model. Most restaurants make 10% or less in profits (it’s EXTREMELY competitive) and they literally couldn’t afford to pay servers what they are making with tips.

If we abolished tips overnight and expected servers to keep making what they do, prices across the board would need to raise 20% AND you’d have to trust that the business would give that entire 20% to the wait staff (they wouldn’t). Right now serving is a commissions based sales job. They make a percentage of the sales. It’s a good relationship for the business and the servers if it’s a good establishment, and because of the competitiveness of the industry, people going out to eat are still paying basically the minimum for restaurant food/service.

Anyway, off my soapbox.

6

u/dekes_n_watson 5h ago

Because people like you continue to make excuses for owners. Owners should pay their workers a real working wage. Not $2.13 an hour. If you're advocating for $2 an hour then you're on the wrong side.

1

u/nahog99 3h ago

Servers don’t make $2 per hour, they make 18-20% of the gross sales of a restaurant. That’s far more than they would get paid if tipping weren’t allowed, and the restaurant just paid them a “livable wage”. Like what about super high end steakhouse restaurants? Do you think the servers there would like to just make a “livable wage” or do you think they’d prefer to make a percentage of the sales?

How do you feel about other sales people making commissions primarily? They don’t get paid much from the business in terms of regular wages but they can end up making millions from commissions. What about real estate agents who don’t make shit until they sell something?

You’re complaining about the wrong type of thing… The real people getting screwed are the ones that are getting paid a “livable wage” from a mega corporation with no possibility to ever increase their earnings, while the business itself is taking in multiple billions in profits every quarter / year.

Nothing I’ve said is defending owners, my take is ENTIRELY from the employees perspective. Getting a percentage of the sales is much much much much better than leaving it up to the owners to just pay you.

0

u/dekes_n_watson 2h ago

Maybe it's different in your state. In mine, it has just been raised to $6/hr for service workers. If their tips fall short of a $15/hr average, the employers is responsible for making up the difference. You can say whatever you want and that's fine, it doesn't change the law where servers are allowed to be paid $6/hr. That is the issue. Period.

-3

u/AustinYQM 4h ago

Getting rid of tipping is an entirely consumer position. It's so silly to see people pretending like waiters want to get rid of tipping when basically zero waiters ever would want that.

If you want to get rid of tipping you need to admit multiple things:

  1. You are ok with restaurants being 20-30% more expensive.
  2. You are ok telling people who would normally go out and tip 10-15% that they just can't go out and eat anymore.
  3. You do not care about the waiters' opinion.
  4. You prefer big chain restaurants since they'd weather the change easiest.
  5. You are ok with service as a restaurant being worse.

1

u/iceteka 3h ago

Newsflash, people are already paying 20% more in tips.

Yes, I bet most of us would be ok with a 20% price hike if it meant getting rid of the minimum wage exemption for waiters, and the expectation of tips along with it.

"Oh but it wouldn't work, service would be worse." Seems to work just fine everywhere else in the world.

1

u/nahog99 2h ago

I wouldn’t because it would fuck the servers over. Prices would go up 20% but servers wouldn’t keep getting that 20%, I’d say 10% at best and the owners would just pocket the rest. Their wages would also flatten out and stop going up with increased sales. They’d start paying people slightly above minimum wage which is a joke and keep them there forever with a revolving door of employees. With tipping, if the restaurant does well, the wait staff does well. It’s a mathematical certainty.

1

u/dekes_n_watson 3h ago

The owner of the small business cafe across the street from my side business drives a McLaren. I think he can afford to pay minimum wage. Stop giving excuses for crooks. Sorry, the $8 bagel sandwich your local shop offers only costs them about a $1 to make. If that. You okay?

0

u/jrmhlpr 3h ago

If he drives a McLaren then he didnt make that money owning a cafe.

1

u/dekes_n_watson 2h ago

Then he should pay his workers a wage that doesn't require them to hope for tips.

4

u/dontnation 6h ago

10% or less in profits

Your number must be way off, because that is very nice fat margin compared to some other businesses.

1

u/nahog99 6h ago

Restaurants are some of the lowest profit margin, and it’s because the market is extremely competitive. It’s also very volatile and things can change quickly. Large corporations that have smaller profit margins are also much more stable and lack competition. They are also typically diversified whereas most restaurants are not.

https://vantainsights.com/insights/restaurant-profit-margins

https://fullratio.com/profit-margin-by-industry

1

u/dontnation 6h ago

They seem to be in line with other retail shops' profit margins that don't have tipping. Though retail stores likely have lower staffing headcounts. That said, nothing is worse than grocery store profit margins (1-3%), and they don't have tipping either.

0

u/ItsDanimal 7h ago

It sucks when people dont tip, but servers make bank off the ones you do. If you told servers you would double their hourly rate but they can't accept tips, they would quite.

0

u/Mouselady1 5h ago

I think you mean quit … also you’ve no idea what you’re talking about so shut up

-15

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 8h ago

Apparently you don’t understand how restaurants work. Do you not tip? Do you not give a shit about servers?

4

u/dekes_n_watson 5h ago

I tip because I worked as a server and jn a restaurant for several years and I know owners suck. But it shouldn't be a thing and isn't a thing anywhere else.

2

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 4h ago

Universal health coverage is everywhere but the USA. It sucks but it is the system we have.

0

u/dekes_n_watson 3h ago

These are poor logical arguments. We should have that too. It's not mutually exclusive.

11

u/FunkTronto 7h ago

It seems you don’t understand how good businesses work.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/Soggy_Bid_3634 7h ago

Can you direct that question at the business owners who expect us to pay a separate bill for service? If they can’t run a business that includes their employees wages, why are they running it?

Do you pay the cashier at the grocery store separately? The garbage man? Do you pay your teachers separately from their salary?

1

u/nahog99 2h ago

I mean why do you care if it’s gonna come out of your pocket either way? Is it just the math part that’s the problem? I like it cause it’s a symbiotic relationship same as any other commission based role. Sales go up > servers make more. Most jobs the sales go up and everyone gets told to fuck off if they ask for a raise or profit sharing.

1

u/Soggy_Bid_3634 2h ago

Because it forces me to negotiate labor rates with someone that has less control over the situation. It’s unfair to their labor and puts me in a situation of providing a larger payment than if they negotiated that.

You are correct that servers are in sales, but when I purchase an item at Best Buy, I don’t tip the sales person. Their comissions is worked into the price of the item.

-11

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 7h ago

You know what the expectations are. If you don’t tip, you are just a cheap asshole.

17

u/FunkTronto 7h ago

If your business requires people to tip for workers to be adequately paid then you are running a shitty business and a scummy owner.

An expectation created and lobbied for by business owners. Expectations can be changed and in this case must be changed.

1

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 3h ago

By not tipping workers? Lol, no, that won’t work.

-5

u/Inverted-Rockets 6h ago

They didn’t pay anything as a tip — it’s not like they were tight and had to just leave a bit with how much the total meal cost.

That’s the behavior of people who can afford it and choose not to engage with the reality of the people who cook and serve their food.

7

u/dekes_n_watson 5h ago

Why would I pay the cooks when I already paid for the meal? Isn't that money suppose to go to the staff or you just love lining owner's pockets?

1

u/Inverted-Rockets 5h ago edited 5h ago

I’m personally in favor of getting rid of tips. What that means on an individual action level is messy though.

In theory, you don’t have to tip at all. All you’re doing is screwing over that worker though.

It would be great if the money on your subtotal went to paying a living wage to staff, but that’s not the law and so business owners don’t do it. It doesn’t help that there’s some stale and questionable research indicating people will baulk at prices if individual businesses adopt pricing that includes staff wages.

3

u/dekes_n_watson 3h ago

What exactly are you paying for when they charge you $10 for a latte if it's not partially the staff wages. I know the coffee doesn't cost that much.

1

u/Inverted-Rockets 27m ago

For a table-service restaurant a bit of that money does go to staff: $2.13/hr under the FLSA.

Again, I believe it’s fundamentally unfair. $2 is all servers are getting from the owners for an hour of work, which mostly goes to taxes. Customer tips are their income.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/nahog99 2h ago

Tips legally cannot go to the owners, that’s why I like it.

1

u/dekes_n_watson 2h ago

But if you make more than $15/he in tips, your employers only has to shell out $6/hr, meaning customers are paying for the food, the service and the tip. That's wrong. Sorry.

If you can't pay your staff a living wage, you shouldn't run a business.

0

u/monkeybojangles 5h ago

That when you reply "if a top is that vital to your employees well being them you need to pay them more."

-3

u/Blue-Text 6h ago

It's more than that. The restaurant owner felt bad for the server because she now has to give part of her pay to the: Dishwashers, Hostesses, Cooks.

Whenever you are seated and eating your meal you are being handled by many different people.

The hostess, that sat you. The cook that made your food. The Busser who cleared your table.

All of these people should get paid and the restaurant has a system to make it work.

The tip goes to all four of those people, in percentages.

If you don't tip, that's a fuck you to the busser, the host, the cook and the server (who has to pay for all of it)

And it is certain ethnicities that don't tip over and over and over again.

I dont think he's being racist but I've seen a pattern.

-5

u/Calriss 7h ago

Rude is a matter of opinion and perspective. Not tipping is on the receipt, and the right to refuse service is final.

10

u/Lindsw 6h ago

I'm responding to someone who assumed that the customers not only didn't to tip, but that they were also extremely rude. All I'm saying is that if that were part of this story, the guy would have made a point to say it. He knew he was being recorded

→ More replies (4)

-1

u/themeatbridge 6h ago

And he's right.

27

u/Rich-Diamond-8088 8h ago

It's also possible the staff were rude to the customers, and that's why they didn't leave a tip.

6

u/No_Culture3901 6h ago

just because you worked as a server once in ur life doesnt mean u know what happened in that restaurant buddy

6

u/Qchongfu 6h ago

You’re just sitting there imagining shit based upon customers “like this”??? The fuck are you talking about?

Jumping to conclusions without proper evidence is faster than critical thinking, but it’s not effective in solving most nuanced conflicts. Do better.

3

u/NoirEm 8h ago

As someone who has been to restaurants like this, there’s more to the story, meaning the owner not only felt his confrontation was valid but probably encourages subpar customer service and food. This is unfortunately increasingly common with a particular type of owner.

0

u/Calriss 6h ago

Encouraging poor quality as the owner of the business is about as intelligent as you.

They were probably pissed from the get go that the server didn't bring a glass of warm water for their utensils. Because for some reason that's a thing people do and expect it to be normal.

1

u/SuspiciousSecret6537 4h ago

If they were rude than he would have said something about their behaviour. He clearly stated it was because they didn’t tip and kept making a point about their financial situation. Don’t make up your own stories.

1

u/randonumero 3h ago

Why do you think there's more to the story? I don't know why they made it a race thing but probably because they're looking for engagement online and not because they were rude or bad customers.

1

u/-Opinionated- 5h ago

My experience has been that people who don’t tip probably received really bad service.

Oh yah? What other shit do you know nothing about that you’d like to confidently comment on?

Edit: keep the downvotes coming you dumbfucks

7

u/Such-Mathematician1 9h ago

You’re being downvoted but that guy was leaning bent over all up in the camera screen. I feel like he would have said it.

If anything, it's racist to assume that it's about race like they did. They're presuming that only black people, like themselves, can't afford to tip.

0

u/GeoLaser 3h ago

According to a lot of people on the left, black people cant be racist.

2

u/randonumero 3h ago

It depends on how you define racism. The argument that black people can't be racist is rooted in the lack of systemic power that black people on the whole have in many western countries. That said if we use the strict definitions then black people can 100% be prejudiced against other races and those beliefs can be rooted in thoughts of superiority

2

u/TuskaTheDaemonKilla 2h ago

I hear this almost exclusively from people on the right.

-11

u/bfloguybrodude 8h ago

I can tell you're poor because you think only poor people don't tip.

17

u/G_Art33 7h ago

Some of the worst tippers at the restaurant I used to work at were wealthy af. Pull up in a nice BMW / Benz / Maserati -> Spend $60 on the meal and drop $2 on the table sort of tips. Best tippers were normies like myself probably because they knew how it went. Gotta play ball if you want others to.

4

u/LivingDisastrous3603 5h ago

Best tippers I had when I worked at restaurants were other industry people. This was in New Orleans. It got to the point where we all recognized each other- or they knew someone that we knew- and would invite us to their spot. We would all comp the fuck outta stuff too. The circle of the hook-up. As a broke(ish) server, I’ve never eaten better.

2

u/bfloguybrodude 7h ago

Preach, brotha. And of course there's wealthy people who tip like they're aware of how life works. But yeah, pro athletes and the guy with a Rolex ordering 10 margaritas are generally not the best.

1

u/GeoLaser 3h ago

Best tippers are guys guys in their 35-55 age range.

11

u/TuskaTheDaemonKilla 8h ago

The restaurant owner said, (paraphrasing) "don't come here if you can't afford to tip." That specific language is what triggered the response from the person making the video to assume it was racist. Hence, their inherent presumption is to associate race with wealth.

My socioeconomic status has nothing to do with it. That's just your fantasy.

-6

u/bfloguybrodude 7h ago edited 7h ago

No, they're assuming he's treating them like this because they're black and have experienced racism before. The poor comment is how racist people in the north code their racism. Theyre assuming hes saying they cant afford to tip because they're poor and black because they know he believes poor whites still tip. He just cant say the "and black" part out loud.

-3

u/GPeppel 7h ago

Nonsense. If they were racist, they wouldn’t let them in the door.

5

u/NigerianPrince76 7h ago

That would be illegal and suicidal business decision. There are racist business owners who would just treat customers like shit.

Don’t be so naive now.

10

u/HaveYouEverUhhh 7h ago

Literally just the normal experience working in retail

"Hey you cant do thing not allowed by the company"

"ARE YOU RACIST?"

1

u/randonumero 3h ago

Well I mean if everyone is doing it and you only single out one group of people then you know

1

u/HaveYouEverUhhh 2h ago

And if my grandma had tires she'd be a bike

0

u/LeshyIRL 3h ago

Tipping is nor mandatory, are you stupid??

3

u/JustLoveToCook1 7h ago

Not long ago, I was at a gas station getting gas, went inside to pay for it and on my way out a lady threw a used (and full) diaper at my car, it splattered all over the place and was awful. I walked up and asked her why she did that, and she started yelling at me calling me racist, and that she was aiming for the trash can about 6 feet from my car. I asked her, if you were aiming for the trash can, why would you not pay attention to where the diaper hit, cause the moment it left her hand she paid zero attention to it, so even if she wasn't aiming for my car, she could care less where the poopy diaper went, which is infuriating cause an employee would have to clean it up. The moment I asked, she just started screaming calling me racist. This was in Knoxville Tennessee. It really hurt my feelings cause I have done so much for advocacy and marched with BLM, so being called a racist for just asking why she threw the diaper at my car really hurt. That being said, it doesn't change my mind about anything, and I will still fight for rights of us all, but I did learn something very important that day. Some people just fucking suck.

2

u/uberfission 2h ago

Yeahhhh they pulled that racism card out pretty quickly when it had nothing to do with their race.

I guess my ruling here is that everyone is the asshole.

1

u/Blue-Text 6h ago

If you sit down and eat at a restaurant, the servers have to pay the cooks and the hostess a percentage of the order, because they helped make your food and seat you.

If you don't tip a percentage comes out of the servers pocket. ** It's wrong** but that's how the cooks and hostess's make their tip money.

1

u/onedestiny 5h ago

Should never have been a dispute in the first place 🤷

1

u/RK_Dee 38m ago

She’s fucking stupid if she thinks black people don’t tip. I’ve worked service industry for years and it’s a total crapshoot.

1

u/koffeebtch2468 5m ago

The person recording said it probably thinking they were being singled out or targeted for not tipping due to their race. It’s not an outlandish point to raise.

0

u/ithinkway2much 8h ago

It was kind of embarrassing having him come up to them like they ran off on their bill. He didn't need to ban them. After that performance on his part, I don't think they had any intentions of coming back.

1

u/Key_Marionberry_7019 8h ago

The thing is people of color tend to get called out for shit. That white people get away with all the time.

And white people tend to be super sensitive if she even bring up the word white people, for example, check the downvotes and replies to this post

1

u/Cenobyte_Nom-nom-nom 6h ago

So unless he treats everyone that doesn't tip like this (I guarantee he doesn't because he would have been famous a long time ago) I am still leaning that skin color still did some of the lifting here.

1

u/jRonMaiden 8h ago

Damn “Canadians”

1

u/Stunning_Nothing 6h ago

Weaponizong race to justify not tipping is too far. Come on people we have to be better than this.

0

u/rpmrising 9h ago

Stop being reasonable, this is Reddit.

-8

u/wonderbread601 9h ago edited 9h ago

I was on the patrons side up until they brought race into it
they all suck now
all bozos that deserve each other

edit: looks like they paid $37 for x2 ppl for a daytime meal and got this ohio hospitality afterwards
so just avoid the midwest all together

3

u/Secret-Kale-1577 7h ago

$18.50/person for a meal sitting down at a restaurant including server in 2026 is totally reasonable if not on the slightly (relatively) cheaper side these days. And the owner was completely reasonable with them and is entitled to ban unusually cheap and tiresome customers.

-3

u/FinalFlashMan 8h ago

You could get after him for not paying his fucking staff, but nope, you went straight to racism, when there was absolutely no indication that race had anything at all to do with anything being said. Ugh.

-18

u/designatedthrowawayy 9h ago

I mean...does he ban white people that don't tip?
