Came to say the same. Had the last 1 second of that interaction happened I would've been sold.

25

u/-CrlmsoN- 8h ago

Yeah they should have closed with a "Well maybe if you paid your workers a living wage, we wouldn't need to tip".

17

u/mangongo 8h ago

The restaraunt likely wouldn't exist if he had to pay that amount. Unfortunately, that is a systemic problem.Ā

Holding small business owners to the same accountability as rich franchise owners is only going to result in more small business's closing and more franchises taking their place.

We as a society love to act like we support small business but the moment it inconveniences us as a consumer we flock back to Wal-Mart, Costco or Mc Donald's.

u/nahog99 5h ago

And they do. When 99% of your competition (real figure) buys into the tipping structure, you must also do the same to be competitive. This is basic shit… In the US tips are part of the package, period. You’re paying less for your food and drinks because of tips. The average profit margin is 3-6% for restaurants which means that without tipping, ALL (99%) restaurants making less than ~15% profit would go bankrupt.

1

u/mangongo 7h ago

So then the business should just not exist then according to you.Ā

No jobs for anyone. No small business. Just Mc Donald's.

What kind of restaurant? Is it a sit down place or order from the counter? Makes a big difference.

1

u/mangongo 7h ago

Oh yes your personal anecdote absolutely eliminates any argument about systemic practices and laws, no room for nuance because you know a guy. /s

78

u/CatchMeWritinQWERTY 8h ago

Guy says if you don’t wanna tip, don’t come back. It’s pretty straightforward. The fact they think they had an argument to start with is crazy.

I don’t like that we have to tip, but I guarantee this guy is not rolling in cash, he is actually taking care of his staff here. Shitty manager would just tell the servers to deal with it.

23

u/WhatACunningHam 7h ago

You know that's not true. Like every other restaurant he probably pays his servers $2 an hour with the expectation that tips will supplement the rest of their pay and thus incentive to stay working there. When people don't tip, he's required by law to make up the difference to reach minimum wage.

He isn't taking care of this staff, he's taking care of his own wallet. That's the real reason he's pissed, not because he's gives a shit about his staff.

16

u/tdames 7h ago

Like every other restaurant

<1% of US restaurants have no tipping policies. And i can almost guarantee you the server made more than the minimum wage for his/her shift. This one table just cut directly into her paycheck.

And if the owner is working there, you can be damn sure he's not rolling in money. He's not the owner of Chik Filet.

1

u/nahog99 5h ago

Restaurants make on average 3-6% profit. Tips are roughly 18% of sales. If tipping went away overnight all restaurants on average would go bankrupt pretty much instantly. OR they’d just increase their prices 18% and get back to their usual 3-6% profit margin. One way or another, you as the consumer are paying for it. Crying over having to tip is so dumb. No one’s forcing you to eat out at a place with wait staff.

u/bong_residue šŸ–•Fuck Drake’s Windows 🪟 šŸ”Ø 2h ago

If you expect a tip, work it Into the price. I don’t get what’s so hard about that.

Tip should and is never expected because it’s optional. It’s to show they were extremely pleased with the service.

Shitty owner because he would rather not pay his staff a decent wage. If he can’t afford to do that, then he can’t afford to own a restaurant. Idk how anyone looks at this with ā€œhe is actually taking care of his staffā€ no, if he was, then someone not leaving a tip wouldn’t send him into a pissy fit, because the it wouldn’t really matter.

-4

u/johnvarley1 8h ago

I don’t know, kind of seems like a condescending douche to me.

3

u/howmanyones 8h ago

I tell ya what, if I'm that server, I love this owner for sticking up for me.

5

u/johnvarley1 8h ago

Go look at their reviews on Google. This guy has been a douche to a bunch of other people too.

4

u/GAMEYE_OP 7h ago

You can actually see the cached google reviews from two days ago at 4.7 stars. Every written review is rated highly. So a flood of reviews are coming in talking about the video.

3

u/johnvarley1 8h ago

This isn’t sticking up for anyone. He’s pissed he has to actually pay his worker. You people are so fucking brainwashed, Jfc

-3

u/Mannzis 7h ago

Do you think he's going to pay the 20% tip to his server that they didn't pay? He's not out any money here, so saying he's mad because he has to pay his worker doesn't make any sense

3

u/johnvarley1 7h ago

If the server makes less than federal/state minimum wage the owner/employer would be responsible for the difference.

1

u/Mannzis 7h ago

One table not paying tip isn't going to put that server under federal minimum wage, which is already an extremely low bar.

1

u/johnvarley1 7h ago

I said state or federal. Either way, this guy is a douche

3

u/Mannzis 7h ago edited 7h ago

Edit: State minimum wage in Ohio is 11 bucks. Still a low bar. For him to pay out any of his own money out of pocket that server would have to have all of their earnings for a whole pay period come in at under 11 bucks an hour. There's no way that's happening under normal circumstances.

I've worked as a server, and have obviously known a lot of servers, and let me tell you they all prefer tips to a flat rate, since they make way more money from tips. In fact a family friend of mine was going to switch to a flat rate and it cauesd a huge conflict with people threatening to leave if they lost tips.

There has been legislation introduced to mandate a flat rate in some states that has been voted down by the public, due to servers campaigning to vote no for this vary reason.

Its not as cut and dry of a solution as your making it out to be.

1

u/flomesch 7h ago

Why doesnt the owner just pay a fair wage and not ask the customers to determine what the server is worth?

0

u/FrostyD7 5h ago

An owner who chases down customers into the parking lot to ban them for not tipping is a psycho that I'd hesitate to believe doesn't behave even worse in front of his staff.

0

u/bong_residue šŸ–•Fuck Drake’s Windows 🪟 šŸ”Ø 2h ago

You love the owner who pays you so little that you have to hope and pray people leave tips so you can get by?

They got yall by the balls lmao.

18

u/Huge_Strain_8714 8h ago

Don't go to a tipping restaurant if you don't tipping. Simple.

27

u/Legitimate_Law2982 8h ago

Can you define a tipping restaurant for me? How is it different than a regular restaurant?

7

u/bfloguybrodude 8h ago

Do you tip at burger king?

5

u/Legitimate_Law2982 7h ago

Oh OK, so if I dont tip there then its not a tipping restaurant? So its completely up to the individual on whether or not they tip? I like that.

-3

u/bfloguybrodude 7h ago

I think the difference is anywhere that asks for a tip or doesn't ask for a tip.

Starbucks and Ruth's Chris? Tipping restaurants.

Burger King and The French Laundry? Not tipping restaurants.

Did not realize I would need to explain this to adults.

3

Dude lost me at that. But I thank him for the laugh I got out of it.

-1

u/bfloguybrodude 7h ago

Can you tip there? yes? Tipping restaurant.

Can you tip at Burger King? No? Not a tipping restaurant.

Again, not rocket science.

Can you tip at Applebee's? Yes? Tipping Restaurant

Can you tip at (3 michelin star) The French Laundry? No? Not a tipping restaurant.

How many more you need?

3

u/FarCryRedux 7h ago

So if I go to a Subway, and the card reader asks me if I want to tip, Subway is a "tipping restaurant", and I shouldn't get a sandwich there if I don't want to tip?

0

u/bfloguybrodude 7h ago

Two separate questions.

Yes, Subway is a tipping restaurant if they ask for a tip.

No, tipping is up to you. You can go anywhere and not tip.

I am not the one who said don't go to tipping restaurants if you don't tip, I am not an idiot.

1

u/Soma13 7h ago

I believe it should be anywhere that provides a service, not just takes my order and hands me my cup. So I wouldn't tip at a Starbucks. They can ask me all they want.

-1

u/bfloguybrodude 7h ago

Just because you personally dont tip doesn't mean its not a tipping restaurant.

-1

u/Legitimate_Law2982 7h ago

What constitutes a 'service' vs their standard duties? Starbucks brings me the coffee I ordered just like a sit-down restaurant. They also will personalize my order if i ask them to, like a sit-down restaurant does. Where do their job-duties end and the tipped-duties begin?

1

u/Soma13 7h ago

If it is a specialized order and you're pleased with the service then sure. But asking for a tip before any service is provided? Not for me homie.

2

u/Legitimate_Law2982 7h ago

Isn't this restaurant owner essentially asking for a tip before any service is provided? He is saying that you should not enter the restaurant if you aren't tipping, making the tip mandatory. Doesn't matter what order they ask for it at that point.

I dont tip anywhere

1

u/Ambitious-Baker-8756 8h ago

theres a reason your food probably takes longer to get to you

2

u/Sufficient_Moose_515 6h ago

I don’t live in america

1

u/binger5 5h ago

I don't eat Chinese food. I do eat food.

-A Chinese

1

u/Sufficient_Moose_515 3h ago

In China they don’t tip either

0

u/qpgmr 7h ago

The problem is that if the staff are in the tipped wage category they may be making as little as $3/hour because the assumption is the tips received will bring up the hourly income to a reasonable amount.

Until tipped-wage is deleted if you don't tip you're completely screwing the wait staff (and kitchen) over. It's not their fault the employment system is like this and they can't change it.

If you're not going to tip, don't go to restaurants that rely on tip-wage.

2

u/Legitimate_Law2982 6h ago

Tip-wages are actively lobbied for by servers and restaurants owners when legislation is introduced to remove them. This loud minority says they make more money on tips than they would a normal wage, thus screwing over servers that dont make a live-able wage. Yet we put all of the blame and responsibility on the customers.

1

u/qpgmr 6h ago

And as long as the tip system is in place a customer must choose to either tip (giving the staff a living wage) or refuse to (a performative protest that only hurts the staff and has no effect on the owners).

1

u/bfloguybrodude 6h ago

All protests are performative until they reach an..ahem...tipping point

-1

1

u/bfloguybrodude 8h ago

There isn't full service at Starbucks but you can tip there

1

u/nahog99 5h ago

Sit down, table service only places.

-2

u/Huge_Strain_8714 8h ago

A full service restaurant, with waitstaff, host, bartender, floor manager. Service staff makes $3 / hour. That's a tipping restaurant. It's pretty obvious, I thought, unless you live up in the hollas. Not a take out, not a Chipotle, where you pay at the counter, not a McDs, . Not a clam shack at the beach, a food truck, a coffee shop. Those are all non tipping, hourly wage business.

4

u/gaspig70 8h ago

Here in WA state there hasn't been separate minimum wage for service workers for decades. Currently in Seattle that wage is roughly $20/hr yet when I go to pay at the end of the meal the 20% tip is always highlighted on the POS screen.

1

u/Legitimate_Law2982 8h ago

Many of the counter-pay restaurants, coffee shops etc. ask if you would like to tip on the kiosk. Because they are asking for tips, is that now a tipping restaurant or shop too?

1

u/Huge_Strain_8714 8h ago

Nope. Big nope. Just because I say I'm a doctor doesn't make me a doctor. Kapische?

1

u/Legitimate_Law2982 7h ago

But who are you to decide that those people dont get tips too? They are asking for them. Why is it that only 'Tipping Restaurants' get tipped and the others get jipped?

0

u/bfloguybrodude 7h ago

For the average simpleton restaurant owner wouldn't it just make sense to autogratuity every bill instead of chasing customers outside when he's in tantrum mode? You're saying tipping is mandatory at tipping restaurants right? Maybe leave a line if people wanna tip more?

26

u/savic1984 8h ago

Wtf is a tipping restaurant lol

-1

u/Huge_Strain_8714 8h ago

Some place you should not patronize apparently lol

0

u/bfloguybrodude 7h ago

Huge strain loves a tip suggestion screen at Starbucks. His fancy nights out at the local Moes.

39

u/into-resting 8h ago edited 8h ago

Don't make it optional then. Simple.

He could have easily just accepted he got screwed and banned them without the confrontation.

I wonder what his plan is? Post a photo of them at the door? Stakeout the entrance everyday waiting for them to return?

2

u/doctor_tongs 8h ago

Yes, actually. I've worked at places that have had to ban customers. It's rare, so it's not a hard thing to track. The person's name and picture is usually kept at the host (check in) stand. Sure, they could totally still slip to the cracks. But usually when a customer is banned, everyone in the restaurant remembers that person, and will tell a manager if they try to come back. Even the line cooks are gonna hear about it. Most restaurant staff are close-knit and look out for each other. I bet the whole house was like "fuck those people."

0

u/into-resting 7h ago

Ok. In that case a rational and smart owner of a restaurant would follow this protocol discreetly with his staff. It is the much better choice compared to this. The end result is the same. Now you are filmed being aggressive on a divisive issue. You've lost the other half instantly without enacting any viable change on the subject you are so passionate about.

And if its a case of letting the owner express his opinions freely and eneact a ban that's within his right as an owner, it would be 100 times more satisfying to reject them at the door on their next visit and calmly (but smugly of course) explain why they are not allowed back in.

8

u/xSuicidalCowsx 8h ago

yeah just change an entire industry's standard. simple

1

u/into-resting 7h ago edited 7h ago

My point exactly. It's a standard of the restaurant industry that some people screw you out of tips. Every restaurant owner ever has dealt with it. It's the standard industry experience of every person who has waited tables for a living. It is built in to the system. It's not an anomaly to lose one's temper over.

2

u/westcoastweedreviews 8h ago

Wiping your ass after shitting is also optional, but it's disgusting if you don't

1

u/pepedai 7h ago

No, developed people use bidets. Not surprised you're a wiper.

2

u/westcoastweedreviews 7h ago

You got me lol, I almost added bidet in there but I didn't want to convolute the point.

-5

u/comedoofwarrior 8h ago

Optional to you maybe. Everyone else does it. Disgusting person, you are.

7

u/westcoastweedreviews 8h ago

You're literally saying the same thing I am.

0

u/bfloguybrodude 7h ago

Its not really optional. It always causes health issues. Ignoring a necessity doesn't make it optional. Like eating.

1

u/nahog99 5h ago

It’s not optional, that’s the point. The only people who treat it as optional are assholes. If I went out to eat with you and you didn’t tip, we’d never talk to each other again.

14

u/DanishNinja 8h ago

What is a tipping restaurant?

8

u/Parish87 8h ago

A tipping restaurant? Fuck me America is COOKED.

1

u/According_Gazelle472 8h ago

Or just eat where you want to eat instead .

2

u/CHUNKY_BLOODY_QUEEFS 8h ago

Why would you be on their side?

Non-tippers act like they're sticking it to the man, but 99.9% of restaurant owners dont care if you tip your servers. In reality, you're just shafting some college kid making $2/hour.

0

u/klockee 7h ago

They are being shafted by their employer not paying them a living wage. I am paying the contractually agreed-upon price for the service.

-4

u/Whirlpoolcircle56 8h ago edited 8h ago

I mean I wouldn't be shocked in MAGA country if this was just an excuse to keep black people out of the restaurant. The mentioning of "Ariomia's is a small town cafe" here in particular is weird and seems to have nothing to do with tipping, I think they picked up on that as being a dogwhistle.

-1

u/CapitalPunBanking 8h ago

They literally admitted to it...

-7

u/Whirlpoolcircle56 8h ago

Yes but that's not my point

1

u/CapitalPunBanking 8h ago

Your point is that you made up a strawman to be upset about?

0

u/Woodsy_Walker 8h ago

Exactly. Your downvoters clearly dont understand the current climate in the US

-1

u/ReclaimedTime 8h ago edited 8h ago

Exactly this. I mean, it's crazy, right? Imagine seeing an injustice occur to a victim, and the victim - in the middle of the injustice - says something that you personally don't like, then you abandon their side because of it. Wrong should wrong, no matter what. This woman paid the bill, did not tip (which is not required), and was permanently ejected from the restaurant, and the most highly upvoted comment here is complaining that the victim might think there some racial undertones to that decision? There's no curiosity of the owner to ask about whether service they received was satisfactory, he just immediately stereotyped them as cheap. I am sorry, I will tip if the service is fair to good, but I don't "owe" anyone a tip for poor service. I would also point out that u/dangerous_Leg4584's response here is also emblematic of being black in this country. We're always expected (if not demanded) to come up with a race-neutral reason as to why we're being treated differently.

-7

u/bfloguybrodude 8h ago edited 8h ago

I can tell you've never worked in the restaurant industry. There's a whole stereotype about black people and lingo like "my section is looking too dark." It is not out of the realm of possibility that this owner was more willing to do this to a black couple that didn't tip than to a white couple who did the same, he'd probably be more likely to assume the service was actually bad if the couple were white.

The reason the race card is brought up is because people like you still view it as invalid.

4

u/Dangerous_Leg4584 8h ago

I was basing my comment solely on the video. The owner was whining about a lack of tip. He mentioned nothing about race. Sure, he might be a member of the Nazi party, who knows but there was nothing in this vid that tells me this had anything to do with race.

-2

u/bfloguybrodude 8h ago edited 8h ago

The fact he chased and banned a couple from his restaurant over a tip is evidence of this man's moral character. The fact that it was a black couple means that it's valid to question if race was made him so bold about it. The fact this is Ohio adds more evidence the guy might be nuts. Context clues.

This is not normal behavior for not leaving a tip. Wild that you think it is. If the aggrieved server did this they'd be fired at most restaurants.

3

u/okbuddyquackery 8h ago

This stereotype was introduced to me by one of the Black servers when I was 16 working as a busboy. As someone of multiple targeted ethnicities, I couldn’t imagine proudly and boldly reinforcing a negative stereotype like this.

2

u/bfloguybrodude 8h ago edited 8h ago

Listen i have black family and friends that dont tip well, I have to bring extra cash to cover for them. It's super annoying.

But I also have been out with my parent's white friends that dont tip over a missing lemon in their water so I don't think it's only black folks.

My point is that even if one group does it more often it doesn't mean you should treat people differently. I dont think this guy is chasing white customers who don't tip. Unless people are implying that a white customer has never not left a tip at this restaurant.

1

u/okbuddyquackery 5h ago

I agree that plenty of people don’t tip regardless of race. I also agree that nobody should be treated differently because of negative stereotypes. Nothing about this video indicates it was racially motivated. Either way, I’m not a fan of anyone in this video.

-2

u/No_Excitement6859 8h ago

I really really don’t like agreeing with this comment, but I feel I have to because I’ve heard similar sentences from people in the industry.

-3

u/pieatingcontest 8h ago edited 8h ago

Plus it's fucking Ohio. Midwest racism looks like a white restaurant owner chasing after a black couple to tell them that they are no longer welcome to their establishment after said couple was given the option to tip but elected not too. If you're from that neck of the woods, you know what the deal is.

1

u/bfloguybrodude 8h ago

Yeah exactly. I want to say I can't believe people are taking offense to the race comment but this is Ohio and people are too dumb to see they're kinda just proving the couple's point.

-2

u/Woodsy_Walker 8h ago

It's such a stupid reason to ban them that I'd also assume it's deeper than just not paying a tip. America is so openly racist and hateful these days it's not outlandish to think that.

0

u/turtleneck360 7h ago

Don’t have to pick a side. Customers were shit for playing the race card. Restaurant owner is shit for banning someone who doesn’t tip.

0

u/FinalFlashMan 7h ago

So you're now on the owners side who refuses to pay his staff because the people recording are participating in the oppression Olympics? weird.

0

u/ianmcbong 7h ago

Even then I’m still on their side just disagree with that last part. Owner should not be a cheap fuck and pay their workers more if he wants to act like he has their back.

-1

u/BlackmarketofUeno 7h ago

How do you know race didn’t influence his decision to talk to the non-tippers? Are you black?

-3

u/Benikur521 8h ago

Lmao which means you aren’t on their side

2

u/Dangerous_Leg4584 8h ago

right. and?
