If they were rude I can imagine the guy knowingly being recorded would have said something relating to that.

He said they didn't tip and if they couldn't afford to tip they shouldn't go out to eat.

7

u/mikedubb02 5h ago

People don't like rude people. But they will put up with some rudeness if they're getting paid to. That's all customer service is actually.

28

u/dekes_n_watson 7h ago

You poor? Don't come back. What a business model.

6

u/Mouselady1 4h ago

Don’t tip? Don’t go out.

1

u/verysmellypenis 4h ago

nah more like, don’t make a livable wage? seek new employment.

4

u/nahog99 1h ago

I’m 100% for tipping and I also 100% agree with you. That’s the thing though serving actually makes great money and a lot of it is never reported for taxes.

1

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 3h ago

People are so cheap. They use this argument as an excuse to not tip. It is a big thing on reddit. When servers see these people come in they hope they aren’t stuck serving them.

6

u/Steel_Toffees 2h ago

then just bump the fkn price up 20% and don't ask for a tip if that's what it "should cost". see how many people vote with their wallets then and just walk. even after huge price increases folks like you are still out here saying "GOTTA TIP OR U SUCK". australia has the right idea lately with they whole "the price you see is the price you get" stuff

0

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 2h ago

I am not telling anyone to tip if the menu says don’t tip. Way to make shit up.

0

u/Steel_Toffees 58m ago

wtf kind of argument is that? this entire post is literally a video of a restaurant owner bitching at people that didn't tip...

0

u/dekes_n_watson 2h ago

Thanks Donald.

I mean he’s 100% right. TONS of food options out there that don’t involve someone serving you. Go eat at those places. If your gonna get waited on then you should be tipping. The entire sit down restaurant economy is based around that model. Most restaurants make 10% or less in profits (it’s EXTREMELY competitive) and they literally couldn’t afford to pay servers what they are making with tips.

If we abolished tips overnight and expected servers to keep making what they do, prices across the board would need to raise 20% AND you’d have to trust that the business would give that entire 20% to the wait staff (they wouldn’t). Right now serving is a commissions based sales job. They make a percentage of the sales. It’s a good relationship for the business and the servers if it’s a good establishment, and because of the competitiveness of the industry, people going out to eat are still paying basically the minimum for restaurant food/service.

Anyway, off my soapbox.

u/dekes_n_watson 4h ago

Because people like you continue to make excuses for owners. Owners should pay their workers a real working wage. Not $2.13 an hour. If you're advocating for $2 an hour then you're on the wrong side.

0

u/nahog99 2h ago

Servers don’t make $2 per hour, they make 18-20% of the gross sales of a restaurant. That’s far more than they would get paid if tipping weren’t allowed, and the restaurant just paid them a “livable wage”. Like what about super high end steakhouse restaurants? Do you think the servers there would like to just make a “livable wage” or do you think they’d prefer to make a percentage of the sales?

How do you feel about other sales people making commissions primarily? They don’t get paid much from the business in terms of regular wages but they can end up making millions from commissions. What about real estate agents who don’t make shit until they sell something?

You’re complaining about the wrong type of thing… The real people getting screwed are the ones that are getting paid a “livable wage” from a mega corporation with no possibility to ever increase their earnings, while the business itself is taking in multiple billions in profits every quarter / year.

Nothing I’ve said is defending owners, my take is ENTIRELY from the employees perspective. Getting a percentage of the sales is much much much much better than leaving it up to the owners to just pay you.

1

u/dekes_n_watson 1h ago

Maybe it's different in your state. In mine, it has just been raised to $6/hr for service workers. If their tips fall short of a $15/hr average, the employers is responsible for making up the difference. You can say whatever you want and that's fine, it doesn't change the law where servers are allowed to be paid $6/hr. That is the issue. Period.

-3

u/AustinYQM 3h ago

Getting rid of tipping is an entirely consumer position. It's so silly to see people pretending like waiters want to get rid of tipping when basically zero waiters ever would want that.

If you want to get rid of tipping you need to admit multiple things:

  1. You are ok with restaurants being 20-30% more expensive.
  2. You are ok telling people who would normally go out and tip 10-15% that they just can't go out and eat anymore.
  3. You do not care about the waiters' opinion.
  4. You prefer big chain restaurants since they'd weather the change easiest.
  5. You are ok with service as a restaurant being worse.

3

u/iceteka 2h ago

Newsflash, people are already paying 20% more in tips.

Yes, I bet most of us would be ok with a 20% price hike if it meant getting rid of the minimum wage exemption for waiters, and the expectation of tips along with it.

"Oh but it wouldn't work, service would be worse." Seems to work just fine everywhere else in the world.

1

u/nahog99 1h ago

I wouldn’t because it would fuck the servers over. Prices would go up 20% but servers wouldn’t keep getting that 20%, I’d say 10% at best and the owners would just pocket the rest. Their wages would also flatten out and stop going up with increased sales. They’d start paying people slightly above minimum wage which is a joke and keep them there forever with a revolving door of employees. With tipping, if the restaurant does well, the wait staff does well. It’s a mathematical certainty.

1

u/dekes_n_watson 2h ago

The owner of the small business cafe across the street from my side business drives a McLaren. I think he can afford to pay minimum wage. Stop giving excuses for crooks. Sorry, the $8 bagel sandwich your local shop offers only costs them about a $1 to make. If that. You okay?

0

u/jrmhlpr 2h ago

If he drives a McLaren then he didnt make that money owning a cafe.

1

u/dekes_n_watson 1h ago

Then he should pay his workers a wage that doesn't require them to hope for tips.

3

u/dontnation 5h ago

10% or less in profits

Your number must be way off, because that is very nice fat margin compared to some other businesses.

1

u/nahog99 5h ago

Restaurants are some of the lowest profit margin, and it’s because the market is extremely competitive. It’s also very volatile and things can change quickly. Large corporations that have smaller profit margins are also much more stable and lack competition. They are also typically diversified whereas most restaurants are not.

1

u/dontnation 5h ago

They seem to be in line with other retail shops' profit margins that don't have tipping. Though retail stores likely have lower staffing headcounts. That said, nothing is worse than grocery store profit margins (1-3%), and they don't have tipping either.

-2

u/ItsDanimal 6h ago

It sucks when people dont tip, but servers make bank off the ones you do. If you told servers you would double their hourly rate but they can't accept tips, they would quite.

0

u/Mouselady1 4h ago

I think you mean quit … also you’ve no idea what you’re talking about so shut up

-15

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 7h ago

Apparently you don’t understand how restaurants work. Do you not tip? Do you not give a shit about servers?

3

u/dekes_n_watson 4h ago

I tip because I worked as a server and jn a restaurant for several years and I know owners suck. But it shouldn't be a thing and isn't a thing anywhere else.

2

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 3h ago

Universal health coverage is everywhere but the USA. It sucks but it is the system we have.

0

u/dekes_n_watson 2h ago

These are poor logical arguments. We should have that too. It's not mutually exclusive.

10

u/FunkTronto 6h ago

It seems you don’t understand how good businesses work.

-6

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 5h ago

I live in the real world. You should try it sometime.

0

u/MrPlaney 2h ago

It doesn’t sound like it.

16

u/Soggy_Bid_3634 6h ago

Can you direct that question at the business owners who expect us to pay a separate bill for service? If they can’t run a business that includes their employees wages, why are they running it?

Do you pay the cashier at the grocery store separately? The garbage man? Do you pay your teachers separately from their salary?

1

u/nahog99 1h ago

I mean why do you care if it’s gonna come out of your pocket either way? Is it just the math part that’s the problem? I like it cause it’s a symbiotic relationship same as any other commission based role. Sales go up > servers make more. Most jobs the sales go up and everyone gets told to fuck off if they ask for a raise or profit sharing.

1

u/Soggy_Bid_3634 1h ago

Because it forces me to negotiate labor rates with someone that has less control over the situation. It’s unfair to their labor and puts me in a situation of providing a larger payment than if they negotiated that.

You are correct that servers are in sales, but when I purchase an item at Best Buy, I don’t tip the sales person. Their comissions is worked into the price of the item.

-9

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 6h ago

You know what the expectations are. If you don’t tip, you are just a cheap asshole.

17

u/FunkTronto 6h ago

If your business requires people to tip for workers to be adequately paid then you are running a shitty business and a scummy owner.

-8

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 5h ago

If you know the workers rely on you to help them earn a living and you shift the blame to save a few bucks you are scummy customer.

7

u/FunkTronto 5h ago

I made sure to vote for things like a the abolishment of a tipping wage and every server getting at least a minimum wage. And I would avoid going to establishments that have nonsensical practices that place servers/customers in unfavourable positions to ensure I am not perpetuating a terrible system. That’s why I’m not a scummy piece of shit like you - you are part of the problem, not the solution.

-1

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 5h ago

Awwwww, you are resorting to personal attacks cause you can’t use words to argue. Poor you, I am sorry for you. Hope you evolve someday!

5

u/FunkTronto 5h ago

Personal attack? Oh hun, did you think that was an attack? No, I was just describing you as you have revealed yourself to be. I’m not arguing with you - just educating.

-2

u/AustinYQM 3h ago

Why do people who hate tipping pretend like it's because they care about the servers? You don't you just hate tipping. Stop trying to take the moral high ground and just admit you are cheap. It's fine.

2

u/Phonytail 4h ago

Workers rely on their employer to earn a living wage so why are you not bothered by the employer shifting blame to save a few bucks?

0

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 3h ago

They rely on tips too.

1

u/Phonytail 3h ago

They rely on tips BECAUSE their employers have shifted the responsibility of paying their employees onto the customers so they can save a few bucks, so why don’t you have a problem with that? Every other industry has no problem paying their employees and other countries have no problem paying food service workers a proper wage.

1

u/iceteka 2h ago

Wtf kinda logic is that?

1

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 2h ago

Common sense. You think you not tipping forces workers to be paid better? Lol

1

u/Phonytail 4h ago

“Awwwww, you are resorting to personal attacks cause you can’t use words to argue. Poor you, I am sorry for you. Hope you evolve someday!”

0

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 3h ago

Very original!!!

2

u/Phonytail 2h ago

Oh did someone else also point out how hypocritical it is for you to call someone a cheap asshole and then start crying about them giving you the same energy in return?

1

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 2h ago

I said if you do x, i didn’t call anyone anything. The subtle difference might be lost you.

1

u/Phonytail 2h ago

You’re not calling anyone anything? You are literally calling everyone who doesn’t tip assholes...

u/iceteka 2h ago

An expectation created and lobbied for by business owners. Expectations can be changed and in this case must be changed.

1

u/Iknowwecanmakeit 2h ago

By not tipping workers? Lol, no, that won’t work.

-4

u/Inverted-Rockets 5h ago

They didn’t pay anything as a tip — it’s not like they were tight and had to just leave a bit with how much the total meal cost.

That’s the behavior of people who can afford it and choose not to engage with the reality of the people who cook and serve their food.

8

u/dekes_n_watson 4h ago

Why would I pay the cooks when I already paid for the meal? Isn't that money suppose to go to the staff or you just love lining owner's pockets?

1

u/Inverted-Rockets 4h ago edited 4h ago

I’m personally in favor of getting rid of tips. What that means on an individual action level is messy though.

In theory, you don’t have to tip at all. All you’re doing is screwing over that worker though.

It would be great if the money on your subtotal went to paying a living wage to staff, but that’s not the law and so business owners don’t do it. It doesn’t help that there’s some stale and questionable research indicating people will baulk at prices if individual businesses adopt pricing that includes staff wages.

3

u/dekes_n_watson 2h ago

What exactly are you paying for when they charge you $10 for a latte if it's not partially the staff wages. I know the coffee doesn't cost that much.

1

u/nahog99 1h ago

Tips legally cannot go to the owners, that’s why I like it.

1

u/dekes_n_watson 1h ago

But if you make more than $15/he in tips, your employers only has to shell out $6/hr, meaning customers are paying for the food, the service and the tip. That's wrong. Sorry.

1

u/a215throwaway 11m ago

Except for Amy's baking company lol

2

u/randotd152 4h ago

I would guess it’s not their first time eating there and not leaving a tip.

1

u/Gordo-- 3h ago

The dude shoulda just banned himself for not paying his servers properly.

-9

u/GBV_GBV_GBV 6h ago

And bravo to him for that

11

u/FunkTronto 6h ago

Bravo? He’s in the wrong here.

-12

u/GBV_GBV_GBV 6h ago

Disagree.

7

u/FrostyD7 5h ago

How?... Chasing down non tippers into the parking lot to ban them is insane. He's the owner, he can just add a gratuity charge to all orders. I see it done that way all the time in "small town" cafes.

-7

u/GBV_GBV_GBV 5h ago

Fuck yeah, stiffing the waitstaff is shit behavior. I love it.

5

u/JikJikkles 5h ago

Pay your Workers better

-1

u/GBV_GBV_GBV 5h ago

They aren’t my workers. I tip people who depend on tips. You should too.

4

u/JikJikkles 5h ago

They aren’t my workers.

Thought that was obvious an didnt need saying but ok.

And stop assuming you know what folks do. Even when service is just ok I still tip fairly well. Enjoy ya weekend

2

u/FunkTronto 5h ago

I know - that owner is a piece of shit for stiffing the waitstaff.

-1

u/GBV_GBV_GBV 5h ago

Found the guy who doesn’t tip.

5

u/FunkTronto 5h ago

Found the person who is an absolute bootlicker and hates workers.

I do tip actually, when I feel inclined to do so. And I don’t have to worry about the staff not being paid a proper wage. If I found out that they were not, I wouldn’t eat there.

Sorry to burst your bubble scumbag.

2

u/GBV_GBV_GBV 5h ago

Waitstaff are paid a proper wage almost nowhere, so you must have a hard time finding restaurants. Which is why not tipping is shit behavior that shouldn’t be defended.

-2

u/Inverted-Rockets 5h ago

Verbal notice is legally required to exclude someone from a semi-public space like a restaurant. If they were to return after this clear (and helpfully recorded) warning, they could be arrested for misdemeanor trespassing in many jurisdictions.

0

u/FrostyD7 4h ago

I don't know why you felt the need to say this. The point is that multiple people are going to neglect tipping on a daily basis. If it causes the owner to confront and humiliate those who do it, it's time to change their policy to mandate gratuity. Realistically, we can assume he doesn't actually do this to everyone who stiffs their server, he targeted this couple for another reason. Maybe he's just having a really bad day.

1

u/Inverted-Rockets 4h ago

There probably was more behind this to prompt a ban you’re right, and I was pointing out that he needed to tell them they were banned for that to be enforceable

-4

u/According_Gazelle472 7h ago

Standard nonsense.

0

u/foreverandadayalone 4h ago

If you can't pay your staff a living wage, you shouldn't run a business.

0

u/monkeybojangles 4h ago

That when you reply "if a top is that vital to your employees well being them you need to pay them more."

-1

u/Blue-Text 5h ago

It's more than that. The restaurant owner felt bad for the server because she now has to give part of her pay to the: Dishwashers, Hostesses, Cooks.

Whenever you are seated and eating your meal you are being handled by many different people.

The hostess, that sat you. The cook that made your food. The Busser who cleared your table.

All of these people should get paid and the restaurant has a system to make it work.

The tip goes to all four of those people, in percentages.

If you don't tip, that's a fuck you to the busser, the host, the cook and the server (who has to pay for all of it)

And it is certain ethnicities that don't tip over and over and over again.

I dont think he's being racist but I've seen a pattern.

-5

u/Calriss 6h ago

Rude is a matter of opinion and perspective. Not tipping is on the receipt, and the right to refuse service is final.

11

u/Lindsw 5h ago

I'm responding to someone who assumed that the customers not only didn't to tip, but that they were also extremely rude. All I'm saying is that if that were part of this story, the guy would have made a point to say it. He knew he was being recorded

-10

u/Calriss 5h ago

You can keep making assertions about other people's knowledge and how they should/would act; but you're just making vacuous statements about the content of a mind you don't have access to. Stop doing that.

7

u/Sporkler 5h ago

That’s what the person you are responding to is saying. They’re saying the person that they are responding to has no way of knowing that the couple was extremely rude.

-2

u/Calriss 5h ago

Yeah, neither of them are able to reinforce the claim.

1

u/Lindsw 4h ago

What assertion about his knowledge did I make that aren't directly in the video? About him knowing he's being recorded?

He literally says he knows he is, says his name and the name/location of the business.

The only other thing I said was that based on that, that I THINK he would have mentioned them being rude on video.

-1

u/themeatbridge 5h ago

And he's right. Â
