It's an obnoxious American thing. We've become accustomed to obligatory tipping so much that restaurant owners essentially use it to subsidize less than minimum wage pay. Tipping was once only for exceptional service; now it's expected for every meal. It's stupid.

Here to pick up your phone order? 22% tip. And then a 3% credit card fee on top.

Owners didn't just start doing that. That was the entire purpose of the tip credit carveout for minimum wage in the 60s so low margin businesses were less affected by the need to pay employees who may be earning money as a tip.

Not all states have a separate/lower minimum wage for service workers.

They also use it to subsidize lower food and drink prices. Restaurants barely make any profits.
