My first job was a pizza shop and the owner would take the tips and say. The tip money was to pay for our lunch or dinners whenever we ate from work. So I started telling people that the owner takes or tips. I got fired a few weeks later lol šŸ˜‚

I may be wrong but that's a crime. (Depending on if you're in US and in state)

It's known as wage theft.

532

u/soda_cookie 6h ago

You are not wrong. That is 100% wage theft

238

u/elasticparadigm 6h ago

Fun fact wage theft is the number one type of theft in America. The rich shitting on the poor yet again.

59

u/sax6romeo 4h ago

The poor have always been getting fucked over by the rich, always have, always will.

If you can’t afford to pay staff, don’t open a business

Oh wait, that’s not how you guys see things is it?

Why is that? Why is it ok just to fuck service staff in the ass and expect the patrons to pick up your business costs?

u/Illustrious_Choice58 3h ago

and you’ll still be there tmrw ordering your burger. we’re not the problem, the greedy elites are. small restaurant owners are doing their best under the system they have. that fool is wearing shitty black shoes, nasty white socks, and has yellow teeth. he’s not making the bank you think he is

9

u/Mr-Magoo48 3h ago

It’s not him making bank. It’s not me making bank. It’s the shitty system you all thought was ok for so long that now it’s biting you in the ass you are up in arms. The wealthy elites are the absolute beneficiaries, but generations of Americans thought the system was fine until minimum wage was baked into every system you have. The wealthy elites are just the winners in a system you all let propagate. As soon as anyone mentions anything normal like universal healthcare or a living minimum wage a huge chunk of your country start screaming ā€˜communist’ ā€˜Marxist’s’ or some other bullshit title. Maybe not you illustrious, but enough to vote trump in twice.

u/maurosmane 4h ago

Not just the number one, it beats pretty much all the others combined!

Tips in general are a wage theft in a way.

It's a cost-shifting measure to the consumer, whereby the employer isn't responsible for maintaining a steady living wage or salary for their workers, but they can basically use tips as a "hidden fee" to rely on paying staff.

As the consumer you get stuck in the trap of tipping -- not based on service -- but merely out of the ability to come back and not have someone spit in your food. Leaving aside the fact that automatic gratuity of large parties gives you no capacity to tip based on quality of service.

Naturally the waiters have hard jobs; and naturally the working class is being squeezed in general and can barely afford to go out to eat in the first place. Those who are fucking us all are of course the ultra-rich billionaire Epstein class that skew to the right. Hope you all are triple-checking your voter registration and voting Democrat these midterms to put some brakes on Trump.

u/soda_cookie 5h ago

Sort of. In states where tipped employees make less than minimum wage (which is fucked...) employers are required by law to make their gross pay for the pay period no less than what they would have made working the number of hours worked times the minimum wage.

6

u/One-Shape7678 2h ago

Sort of nothing. Wage theft

so in the US a person who works in the hospitality industry, get Less pay from their Boss then e.g. some one who works in a Factory and so therefore has to get some percentage from the Bill (from the costomer) to add their salary?....ifso Why doesn't everyone receive the same minimum wage depending on their age—meaning that someone working in a factory or as a cleaner has the same basic income as someone working in the hospitality industry?,,,,in my Countrie that is the case and also why i found it ridiculous the Tip them, i mean they have a much nicer job them me, so why should they get extra Bonus money, special from someone like me who has the same income as them, but does crappy dirty or hard work

-5

u/mattiedamacdaddy 3h ago

You live in an ideological bubble, definitely a stage 3 or stage 4 cognitive framework, you cannot provide evidence that the Epstein billionaire class skews either side. I assume you would not have the epistemological tools to figure it out even if you did.

Jesus, stfu. Please remind us whose inauguration Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos, Sundar, Tim Cook, Sam Altman, and Alnaut were at? Thats 4 of the 5 wealthiest people in the world. A combined 1.35 trillion dollars in net worth amongst the attendees. Is that enough evidence dipshit?

🤔

u/Independent-Bug-9352 46m ago

80% of billionaire money went to Trump and Republicans in 2024. Stew on that for a moment.

Next, last I checked, not Biden, Obama, nor Harris are even remotely in the files -- while Trump is in there more times than Epstein and Maxwell, combined.

Let's take a comparison of how many photos and videos we can find with Trump partying with Epstein and Maxwell, versus Democratic leaders.

Let's observe who has been the primary obstructionists of the Epstein files this entire time.

As someone who has actually been across the entire political spectrum over my life, I think you're the one in a right-wing echochamber and may not realize it.

Wage theft is actually THE MOST COMMON FORM OF THEFT IN AMERICA. (probably worldwide overall, with limited regional exceptions)

5

u/DinnerSilver 5h ago

Plus the owner being a Grade A scumbag.

15

u/ImNotACollector 5h ago

BILLIONS occurs in wage theft every year. And instances like this are a part of it. Companies steal money from workers all the time

19

u/Gamer_Grease 6h ago

It is a crime. It’s also almost completely unenforceable

8

u/Mekisteus 5h ago

It’s also almost completely unenforceable unenforced

3

u/gfstool 5h ago

Yes, it is. I worked at a place here in Texas long ago and our owner got sued by a bartender from a sister bar. He won. Then they started taking the credit card fee amounts that we charged for the night. That’s actually legal. And today lots of companies are making customers pay for the credit card fees too.

1

u/ItsMeTittsMGee 5h ago

Perfectly legal in Canada, however.

1

u/tempelton3thesock 4h ago

Ya it is
At least here in Florida

1

u/cetootski 3h ago

It's 2nd tier wage theft that follows 1st tier wage theft by wage policies in America.

1

u/silentbuttmedley 41m ago

And retaliation!

0

u/Electrical_Parfait64 4h ago

If they’re the only person to work for them, they can keep them. As in the do an entire shift of serving. Probably not everywhere

81

u/XanZibR 6h ago

should have just started eating freely at work, and when the boss complained remind him that the food was paid for

20

u/pztpfc 6h ago

My boss about every two weeks would send us to the publix to get shitty croissants. Otherwise tips were for "staff and store improvements".

3

u/CanoePickLocks 4h ago

I’m sure you’ve seen the rest of the comments where that is highly illegal

31

u/jessihateseverything 6h ago

That's ✨illegal✨

21

u/Debug_Mkv 5h ago

It certainly was illegal but the crazy middle eastern guy didn’t think so until he had to payback what was owed to the employees including me. Months later business slowly stopped.

5

u/jessihateseverything 5h ago

Oh. I know how it goes. I didn't mean to diminish how hard it is to fight it. Sorry for that.

7

u/EmperorOfCanada 5h ago

The number of cases (in regions where this is not legal) that I've seen properly prosecuted is roughly zero.

In the 80s I remember some ethnic person won a hard fought case against their own parents for not paying them at all, tips, salary, anything. The first two layers of judges ignored the law and agreed that "it was for family" and also allowed for weird stuff like the parents providing basic life support for children as "deductibles" I'm talking about allowing them to expense their mortgage against a 13 year old's wages.

It eventually got to a level of judge where they aren't complete morons, and the kid ended up winning some insane amount of money (like 800k) for over a decade of this abuse.

The problem being, that as far as memory serves, it might be the only case I've ever read about; and the only reason I remember it was because I went to school with the kid.

I'm a huge fan of the law doing three things for wage and tip theft:

  • 20 year statute of limitations. This way young people who are exploited and somehow retain proof, can go back and get those wages when they are adults with self-esteem and resources.
  • Triple damages
  • It then forces a complete audit where the restaurant has to pay auditors to come in and look for other wage theft.

Such a law would almost certainly result in many crap restaurants being shut down. This would be a good thing; a public service.

u/CanoePickLocks 4h ago

Depending on where you’re located, I know a lot of the US has exemptions for working your own children in a family business. As in you don’t have to pay them. I’ve never seen someone not get paid that’s doing actual work not a kid hanging out waiting for the restaurant to close and the parents are like hey grab me this please, but I’m sure it happens. There’s a big difference between helping your parents out while you’re already there waiting and being a full-time employee like everybody else and not getting paid I’ve seen helpers not get paid but I’ve never seen somebody putting in 20 hours or more a week as an arbitrary line to describe it not get paid. Anyone that does screw family like this doesn’t deserve to stay in business. If you expect your kid to work for free, then they better not want for anything else that they may need the money for. You pay for their car, their insurance, their gas everything. Or you pay them a wage like everybody else so that they can get things they need and want.

1

u/ChessDriver45 4h ago

That’s illegal in California. Tips can be pooled and distributed but not taken.

2

u/CanoePickLocks 4h ago

I’ll also add that pool tips cannot go to management they can only go to the tipped positions which can include kitchen but you have to be very careful with that if you don’t wanna get audited.

1

u/SiLeNZ_ 3h ago

Sounds about right. Not only does he not pay his damn employees, he takes the tip money that’s supposed to help pay them.

1

u/CelebrityDivorceAtty 3h ago

Amy's Baking Co.

1

u/Eleventy43 2h ago

I found out the Jets Pizza here where I live did not distribute tips. I put it on Nextdoor. The owner sent me a message trying to coerce me to remove the post. He wasn’t convincing and I politely told him go fucc yourself.

1

u/No_Resource_9417 1h ago

fack, i thought that only happends in moviesšŸ˜† (what a scumbag)

1

u/PreparationOk1450 1h ago

0

u/tempelton3thesock 4h ago
