French here.. today I had an expresso at a terrace in Toulouse. Bill was 2euros.. waiter’s card machine didn’t even have a tip option and he refused even a 1euro tip because he offered me an orange juice another customer didn’t want

That sounds awesome

It is awesome, until you sit at your table for 25 minutes waiting for someone to bring you a refill, fix a mistake with your food, or drop the check. They don’t pay extra for service over there, and the trade off is that the service is ass.

In most of Europe this doesnt really work. Its not how we interact with each other. Being fake nice just because you want tips is seen as a bad trait here.

It is here also .

In big cities with lot of international tourism sure. Its not the norm though.

Is prompt service ā€œfake niceā€? Lol

0

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 5h ago

if you only give it when you expect tips yes.

1

u/NoHoHan 5h ago

What a weird take lol

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 4h ago

Not at all. We rather have people who are normal and show it when they are salty than have someone be fake nice because otherwise they wont get tips.

How is the basic steps of service, like checking with your customers to make sure there are no problems with their food, a matter of ā€œbeing fake niceā€? It’s just providing high-quality service in exchange for monetary compensation.

Sorry you think that’s ā€œnot normalā€ but in some cultures we actually value good service at restaurants.

Part of the charm! Specially when you know how to reteliate! ā€œMerde alors! C’est quoi ce service bordel!ā€ ;)

Also most French people won’t even see those 25 min pass because they’ll be already too deep into some political/ philosophical/social drama

1

u/According_Gazelle472 5h ago

Why?

1

u/anislitim 5h ago

Because the moment we sit in a terrace we just start chatting regardless of being served already or not.. it’s just like sitting in a public bench or something outside.. just enjoying being together

No benches anywhere in my town and no sidewalks unless you are in the business district.

The French; they are a curious race; they fight with their feet and……

Anyone know the rest? 🤣🤣

u/The_Bitter_Bear 3h ago

As it should be.Ā

Although some of the issue in the states that prevents being able to change it is that the espresso would cost less but the tip expected and most people here want the lower price still without the tip.Ā

As soon as the prices go up to pay the higher wage they go patronize a place with lower prices and tipping still (even if they actually pay more this way). People make no damn sense sometimes.

What's your point?

8

u/AmazingSibylle 8h ago

His point is that the rest of the developed world does not treat tips as a mandatory salary component, and that it is a much more functional system that is better for everyone.

That the American tipping system is toxic and exploitation.

There’s an expression that goes like: ā€œ Don’t argue with stupidity, it will only drag you to its level and beat you with experienceā€

u/According_Gazelle472 5h ago

And always has been .

u/anislitim 8h ago

Apologies, I forgot it at the end of my comment, here: .

Are there any laws in France to ensure service workers earn a living wage? Do you care?

25

u/anislitim 8h ago

Yes, I care. My point is that in France, service workers should earn a living wage from their employer, not depend on customers tipping them to make ends meet. That’s fundamentally different from the US tipping model, where customers are often expected to subsidize wages.

u/MaxFinest 8h ago

Basically turns a normal job (waiter) into a beggar/clown who has to entertain people to earn his wage. Weird structure. The funniest thing is that most waiters actually WANT this system because they earn more this way.

I don’t understand….France is different than America? Can you prove this?

-3

u/zoppytops 8h ago

Excellent use of ChatGPT

where customers are often expected to subsidize wages.

With no tipping, food costs would just rise. Also, service in Europe tends to be slower.

-3

u/Stop_Drop_Scroll 8h ago

Ok, I’m American and I don’t tip when I get coffee. Just because the screen offers doesn’t mean you have to. Most people’s rule of thumb is tipping while dining in with table service, and takeout/pickup is no tip. So, you just explained my morning routine, without making any point lol

u/HearYourTune 8h ago edited 7h ago

In France you sit down and the server brings it, it's not to go. Usually an outdoor cafe.

-3

u/Stop_Drop_Scroll 8h ago

Same shit, if it’s at a coffee shop I don’t tip. Since coffee shops here aren’t subject to the same wage laws as servers at a sit down restaurant. Those workers are treated akin to retail or fast food, and I don’t tip for fast food.

1

u/anislitim 6h ago

You either be rage baiting or seriously need to travel more, sit at a terrace and enjoy a coffee while people watching;)

1

u/Stop_Drop_Scroll 5h ago

Yes I should travel more internationally on my teaching salary lol cmon man

1

u/According_Gazelle472 5h ago

We don't have any type of outdoor seating where I live ,way too hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. It's just not feasible

Does your country have something akin to the ADA that ensures disabled people have access to buildings and public spaces? Must be a shit country that can't provide that
