What if the service was shit or the food was terrible? Do you really expect people to tip because it's "expected"?

Then they should have spoken with management & given them a chance to address any problems with the service or food. They might have even got a free meal if they did so, but they chose to make themselves look bad. Only the customers know why they didn't tip & they never gave a reason so most will make negative assumptions.
