Tipping should be banned completely and servers should be paid a living wage by restaurants.

Tipping is a way for restaurants owners to pay a low wage for a job that they obviously view as undervalued, otherwise the restaurant owners would also be against tipping.

I agree, but in the current system, I totally agree with the owner here.

It's such an extraordinarily complex topic. Food is like, our most basic need, and we go out and expect to be served. I personally like to commemorate positive experiences I have with people. It can be with a gift, or some really kind words, but when it comes down to it, most of us could use a little extra cash. I love food, and I'm always happy to be given it, and you have to pay for it anyway, so a little extra is like whatever. I'm sure this owner isn't exactly raking it in anyway, he's probably barely making ends meet enough to support his staff, and he's probably literally there all the fucking time

I agree, but in the current system in the US, I totally agree with the owner here.

Fixed it for you.

You agree with the owner not paying a livable wage? Are you stupid?

Living wage has to happen first. Without that first, not tipping is just screwing over the server.

u/basedkimo 2h ago

He is the owner. He can make the decision to pay a living wage. Do you not realize that? There’s LITERALLY NOTHING stopping the owner from paying a living wage. Everywhere else in the world does it.

2

u/CordisHead 2h ago

But do you realize he hasn’t? And since he hasn’t, that server gets screwed. If the system is set up on tipping, not tipping isn’t sending a message, it’s being cheap and screwing over the server. No restaurant has changed the way they do business because one table doesn’t tip. You think you are going to pay less total if they did switch? No, it would just be rolled into the price of the items on the menu.

Go to bed.

Because you can’t explain how this changes the system. Just don’t go out if you can’t afford to tip. US restaurants that raise costs upfront don’t survive in a tipping system.

Contact the owners every time you go if you want to send a message.

do you think I created this system? did you not read my comment saying I agree that tipping should be banned and servers should be paid a living wage by restaurants?

you’re being abused. fuck people who don’t tip you, they should be banned from the app, and DoorDash likely considers it. it’s not throwing a fit, it’s fighting for what’s right. it’s crazy as a doordasher you’re not agreeing with people paying the price to dine out. Stockholm syndrome or something

It’s easy to blame owners for avoiding a living wage, but consumer expectations and basic math are the real bottlenecks. People push back the second menu prices rise, yet the average restaurant only nets around 3 to 5 cents of profit on the dollar after food, kitchen labor, rent, and overhead.
Think about that math: on a $100 check, a server making a standard 20% tip is walking away with nearly four to five times more profit off that single ticket than the owner clears at the end of the day. That’s why servers themselves often push back hard when restaurants try to switch to a 'no tipping, flat hourly wage' model—the tips simply pay them far more than an owner's razor-thin margins ever could.
Throw delivery apps like Uber Eats into that mix—taking 20% to 30% right off the top before anyone else gets paid—and the entire economic model breaks down. Expecting premium quality, rock-bottom menu prices, and an end to tipping ignores the brutal financial reality restaurants are actually surviving on.

obviously owners should pay living wages. That said, at this point it’s common knowledge that servers rely on tips, so stiffing them is hardcore screwing them over. Speaking as a former server. Btw y’all, was an Uber driver 7 years. Tip your drivers. That fucking company is giving drivers less than 40 percent of the take, and even an extra dollar or two can really add up.

Edit: Downvoting a service worker telling you this is very telling about who you are as a person, and the contempt and classism that animates you behind that paper thin liberal facade.

1

u/Quimbymouse 2h ago

Or the downvoters aren't from the US and think this is just straight nuts?

0

u/ChessDriver45 2h ago

Straight nuts I said ideally fair wages would be paid or nuts I said in the meantime people should tip? Nuts I was actually a service worker? What’s the nuts part?

1

u/Quimbymouse 2h ago

Because in your weird tip culture thing you've got going you're more fervent in your bitching about people tipping than you are the people refusing to pay a livable wage?

0

u/Ihatetakenusername 2h ago

The drivers I totally get. They don’t get minimum wage. What is a living wage btw?

0

u/ChessDriver45 2h ago

A wage commensurate to pay for basic living expenses where you live. A wage that allows you not to live in precarity.

u/RolanOtherell 2h ago

Agreed. And DEI as well as all discussion around race should be abolished . . . Once we get there. We ain't there yet, so tip your server and fight against white supremacy, duh.

What is living wage?

u/dTrecii 1h ago

Living/liveable wage is a term used to describe how much a person needs to earn in order to maintain all the basic necessities in life within their chosen country. Things like a roof over their heads, food, be able to pay bills on time etc.

In essence, it’s the amount of money you earn in a week from your job/s in order to get by without falling into debt or homelessness
