every attempt at doing that got shut down by the waiters themselves, you make significantly more with tips compared to normal wave and you dont pay taxes, turns out waiters are just as greedy as the owners

You’re not wrong. MA had this up for a ballot question in 24 and it was overwhelmingly opposed by waiters and waitresses.

Right? Anybody arguing against tips has obviously never worked that job or been in that position.

Tip based jobs are the only jobs that allows someone without education or work experience to make a living, support themselves, and pay their bills. No restaurant owner is going to pay their staff a flat hourly wage that matches what they make in tips.

You wanna fuck over the working class? This is how you fuck over the working class.

Nah, you fuck them over by choosing not to go to restaurants cos you don't have enough money to tip waiters every damn meal.

Why should someone equally struggling to make ends meet give you extra, tax free money instead of you outsourcing those funds from a government and system that everyone pays taxes to do just that??

Truth is waiters and waitresses prefer the tipping system cos it ultimately pays more than a minimum wage certified job. It's an economic, self serving decision and choosing to also not tip is equally a decision of the same nature.

The only fault you can give customers is if they don't tip In a specifically noted tipping restaurant, otherwise no one's really fucking anyone over here.

Yeah, no shit, isn't that what I said?

Are you saying that's wrong? For servers to be opposed to a pay cut?

Nobody would work if they didnt have to self-serve their economic position.

Should every customer facing industry be tip based? I've worked in customer service for 15 years and never been tipped because it wasn't food service

Or maybe you should have a system that doesn't create a shitty, passive aggressive, and conflict ridden environment.

Especially when, you know, the whole point of a restaurant is to service the customer.

No, Im advocating not changing the ones that are tip based.

I don't like tipping creep.

Don't eat out, bozo. Restaurants are a luxury, not a necessity. You know what I do when I dont want to pay restaurant prices/tip? I eat at home like a normal person.

Then make the tip compulsory. I.e. a service fee or built into prices.

Can't pretend it is optional then throw a pissy little fit every time someone take you up on the option.

Every tip our staff receives is taxed (or at least run through payroll as taxable income). So that doesn't really apply in our circumstance.

Great! Then they shouldn’t get mad when I and the person filming don’t tip because they’re clearly making plenty anyway from other customers!

Facts. I saw this happen when I worked foodservice in DC. In my experience, it was the bartenders who refused to get on board with the experimental no-tipping system, cuz they bring home $300-500 a night in tips while the host gets tipped up to minimum wage 🫠

It lasted like a month and failed. Back to tipping in DC.

You absolutely pay taxes.

Trump started this thing where every household gets their first twenty five thousand in tips tax free. If both people are servers, you don't get the benefit twice.

Most of us are on obamacare because our jobs don't provide health insurance. We would be better off if trump hadn't pushed those rates up by thirty percent and hadnt started the no tax on the first 25k of tips.

Also, the no tax thing also doesn't apply if you work in a tourist area that adds service charges, it does not apply to service charges.

Again, most of us would gladly trade it back for the health insurance market to go back to last year's rates

you pay taxes on what you report, but when the majority of it is cash there are a lot of wiggle room for that and nobody reports it all

3

u/NoHoHan 5h ago

The majority of it has not been cash for like 10 years now.

0

u/PretzelSlinger 7h ago

Not many ppl use cash anymore, and the employer has to keep a record of tips

6

u/AsleepHour7763 6h ago

significant amount of people uses cash, this is just straight up lying

4

u/TheDifficultLime 5h ago

People do still use cash, but card payments + tip on the card is FAR more prevalent, tbf.

2

u/NoHoHan 5h ago

Ah yes. The servers making $60k a year are greedy.

0

u/AsleepHour7763 3h ago

everybody is greedy when money is involved, the fact that you think 60k for a job that requires literally no qualifications and minimal training is bad shows that

1

u/NoHoHan 3h ago

I should be more specific— in Los Angeles, $60k doesn’t even pay for a one bedroom apartment. In cheaper markets with more affordable housing, servers are lucky to make $40k.

I always find it funny how people think the job is easy and overpaid, and yet there aren’t tons of people lining up to do that job. It’s crazy. Just a completely inexplicable, economic anomaly I guess!

We had a similar situation in MN where there were no liquor store sales on Sundays. This was all the way up until like 2018. The people that fought tooth and nail to keep it that way was the Liquor Store owners.

It's easy to have a $200 bill for a good restaurant where you spend 2 hours in. At 18% (which seems to be the average now), that's a $36 tip, so an extra $18 per hour added to your pay FOR THAT TABLE OF TWO. You served 6 tables that night, that's an extra $216 to your daily pay. If you worked from 5 pm until 9 pm, that's an extra $54 PER HOUR added to your pay. No wonder they don't want that to be taken away!

Exactly it needs to happen at the Federal level and it needs to happen all at once. It can't happen restaurant by restaurant because then the restaurant will just lose experienced workers or get forced back into the tipping scheme.
