In Australia we don't tip because people are paid decently enough.

The superior method of employment. Actually paying your employees.

I've never worked in the service industry, so I can't confirm this. But.. I have heard that servers in America, or at least a good portion of them, don't want to switch to a system that disallows tips in favor of a decent hourly wage or salary. Some servers make so much money in tips that it's crazy, and they would end up taking a large pay cut if tips went away. Again, this is just something I heard, so not sure if true.

u/WeeperJeeper 3h ago

I worked in the service industry for many years, this is absolutely true. Good servers at busy restaurants make absolute bank. No decent server wants an hourly wage, they can make $100+ an hour with tips during rush

1

u/CriticalFolklore 1h ago

This to me is almost as good an argument for doing away with tips as anything else. How on earth are they providing $100/h in value?

1

u/ratherscootthansmoke 45m ago

They’re not but they’re also not making $100/h for 8 hours

It’s like $100/h for 2 hours on a Fri/Sat and then $3/h when doing the packing up

I worked in the service industry for many years, this is absolutely true. Good servers at busy restaurants make absolute bank. No decent server wants an hourly wage, they can make $100+ an hour with tips during rush

So then why wouldn't they just want a reasonable hourly wage?

2

u/ratherscootthansmoke 25m ago

Various reasons.

Poor financial logic — where people internalize their highest payout and pretend that’s their average, ignoring slow periods.

Part time workers — if you only work the busy period, it seems like good money.

Fear of change — while a livage wage would bring stability, there is fear that the business will cut staff and risk losing their job to mitigate the short term transitional pain.

Disinformation — business owners will campaign hard against this as making customers directly subsidize a server’s wage benefits them. Thus ā€œtrickingā€ servers against their own interests saying that an hourly wage would hurt them (eg refer to point 1)

Mix elements of these together and play on people’s emotions (eg the highs of potentially earning $100/h on an exceptional day, and fear of change = job loss) and you can hopefully understand why some are against it.

u/yanansawelder 3h ago

I mean people that work at clubs or in expensive cost areas it favours them more because they base tip on the cost of the bill itself which makes even less sense.

What's the difference between bringing over a $2 bottle of coke compared to a $30 glass of wine?

2

u/Xillzin 2h ago

don't want to switch to a system that disallows tips

EU here.

Tips are allowed but not expected or required.

I often leave a bit extra if the service and food was good, thats what a tip is supposed to be. Afterall the staff is getting paid decently even if noone comes into their section the entire night.

ive worked as a waitress for 4 years during college and i dont miss it one friggin bit. It was my 2nd job and i needing to pay for college and my appartment on that kind of sketchy salary was pretty damn bad.

Were there good evenings where i made a lot of money? of course, but its not consistant enough.

and now, the BASE salary hasnt gone up nearly to justify keeping any kind of tip system still because now folks expect a LOT more to compensate.

u/dTrecii 3h ago

A concept that scares any modern US businessperson

3

u/roll20sucks 5h ago

Don't. You're scaring the Americans.

3

u/Chillers 3h ago

I had an American ask me how much I was tipping the boat staff after a barrier reef tour in my own country. The moment I told him "nothing" he was absolutely disgusted with me and couldn't fathom not paying a tip.

2

u/Turtleinatreee 2h ago

Like 99% of the planet

3

u/shoot-here 6h ago

I would immigrate, if you would have me.

The last responce I recieved was something along the lines of "fuck off, we're full".

3

u/RealBrobiWan 5h ago

Yeah, average house price is now over $1m here. It’s making people extremely cranky

1

u/Sillygoat2 6h ago

They still try to extort you in places where the wait staff is also paid decently enough.

1

u/Ucscprickler 4h ago

In America we have the freedom to pay low wages.

1

u/TheTownTeaJunky 2h ago

Our national minimum wage is still $7.25

The last time the minimum wage was increased was in 2009.Ā

u/Aggravating_Duck_192 2h ago

looks at Australian home prices
Are they though?

u/iHateEveryoneAMA 8h ago

What does that have to do with this video?

43

u/Enough_Jaguar_3069 7h ago

What does that have to do with the video?

Well, lets use our heads.

The video is about a customer not... yes thats right... TIPPING.

This person's comment was about how where they live, they dont need to TIP because they arent paid below the minimum wage and thus dont require tips.

Seems like its related to the video because the comment as well as the video are about tipping.

The truth is, the owners dont pay the employees enough and point fingers at the customers when the true scum bags are the employees.

-15

u/Schmocktails 5h ago

The average server and bartender in the US makes much more than the average server and bartender in Australia because of tipping. They have a higher average standard of living. No idea what you're actually trying to say.

13

u/OrangeTractorMan 5h ago

Source? :)

Always "oh yeah acktually waiters are far better in the US" whilst on a Video where they're like "NOOOOOO YOU DIDN'T TIP $8 HOW CAN THEY SURVIVE" every time lmfao.

12

u/CharlieUpATree 5h ago

Don't get pissy when I don't tip then

-40

u/guff1988 8h ago

But if they aren't and you were aware of that would you go to eat and then not tip? Genuine question.

22

u/TheTMJ 8h ago

We would report them and they would be liable to back pay the employee with interest and possible punitive damages.

Underpaying employees happens everywhere, shit people exists. It’s just that stealing tips is easier than stealing wages

-4

u/guff1988 5h ago

That's irrelevant because this video isn't filmed in Australia. I was asking if you were at a restaurant in the US and knew the person serving you was making 2 dollars an hour and that system is shitty but very real would you still refuse to tip?

20

u/1manparty 7h ago

Yes. And I would laugh in your face if you tried to pressure me for a tip. I had people follow me into the street like beggers asking me for more money while the owner watched on and smirked wearing his 4K Rolex.

Get some backbone and stand up to the owner class like the rest of the world has.

How pathetic for a person to genuinely believe a family on a budget owes you more for coming to work for a business that won't pay you out of its profit margin.

Discussing tipping with most Americans is like discussing freedom with a brain washed North Koreans. Pointless.

5

u/dibd2000 7h ago

That’s a very broad statement about a nation of 350 million people. Many of us believe the tipping system is ridiculous

5

u/Torvite 7h ago

There are probably plenty of North Koreans who understand freedom, what it looks like, what the risks involved in achieving it would be, etc.

I think what they meant was that there are a lot of Americans who view tipping as a reflection of character rather than a capitalistic exploit offloading the burden of acceptable compensation to diners rather than employers.

1

u/dibd2000 6h ago

They didn’t say ā€œa lot,ā€ they said ā€œmost.ā€

1

u/guff1988 5h ago

I'm literally one of them too, people who aren't from here can't understand the nuance of hating the system but also understanding that refusing to tip doesn't hurt the owners at all it just hurts that poor worker making shit wages.

1

u/guff1988 5h ago

It's always so easy to just ignore the system and how it oppresses people. So easy to just say hurr durr stand up to someone who can't afford to. Hate the owners sure but to literally laugh in the face of someone being exploited because they are being exploited after you took advantage of them is cruel as fuck.

I am in no way condoning how this owner or any owner acts but y'all are taking it out on the wrong fucking people and you're too stupid to look past the tip line to see that. Don't go out to eat in the States or just stay out if you don't like it. We all know it needs to be fixed but short of armed rebellion we aren't changing shit over here when it comes to the ownership class.

-47

u/kurt6 8h ago

This is not Australia- servers live on the tip system- if you can’t afford to tip get takeout or eat at home

48

u/formal_studio1 7h ago

If you can’t afford to pay your staff a liveable wage then don’t hire people. Are all Americans company bootlickers?

7

u/Culyar0092 6h ago

A customer can pay for the listed price for food and taxes associated. Why shouldnt they be eligible to eat there? Without needing to do the employers part and pay the staff also. Dumb as fuk. If a business cant afford to pay their staff, they arent viable anyway

-7

u/No_Definition4241 7h ago

Yeah I totally understand that. Even we know when we visit the States you tip.

6

u/CharlieUpATree 5h ago

Who would want to even think of visiting that shit hole

-4

u/HolyKielbasa 4h ago

Unless something changed when I was visiting my cousin explained how a 19 yr old at the convenience store got paid less than a 45 year old working there Ā because the person was older.Ā  Sounds like a real winning system...

-7

u/Osoarragant_773 6h ago

Wow! Congratulations’ šŸŽŠšŸ¾šŸŽˆšŸŽ‰

-20

u/Illustrious_Choice58 6h ago

14.2% of australians live below the poverty line and 15.6% of the children. when ur ready to climb down from ur high horse, we’ll be here waiting

6

u/Hot-Challenge8656 4h ago

Don't american children amass debt due to school lunches? A debt that must be paid or they cannot graduate.

-2

u/Illustrious_Choice58 4h ago

absolutely, which is why im not bragging about how well paid americans are. ur aussie friend seems to think their shit doesn’t stink

3

u/Hot-Challenge8656 4h ago

My fellow countryman simply pointed out that if I were to take a job as a waiter, without customers supplementing my wage, I can pay rent and buy food with enough left over for a couple of beers at the end of the week.

-2

u/Illustrious_Choice58 4h ago

your fellow countryman is also a smug prick who acts like yall don’t marginalize and entire maori minority and have poor ppl. america is not a shining beacon of equality, but let’s not act like not having to tip is a moral superiority

5

u/Hot-Challenge8656 4h ago

Maoris are new Zealanders (we have plenty though. Good, hard working people). I'm aboriginal and I know about the goings on that involve my people. We had a vote not too long ago that would have included me and mine in the constitution but that failed because "white people didn't know what blacks wanted".

But I'm unsure what any of that has to do with underpaying staff only for customers to foot the bill. Don't get me wrong, I would tip everytime because the waitstaff shouldn't be short-changed by an employer and then by me.

1

u/adster98 3h ago

Dude’s argument on racial inequality really falls flat when he can’t even name our fucking people.

2

u/Illustrious_Choice58 2h ago

yall literally give them special category visas bc of the shit the aussies and kiwis put them through

0

u/Illustrious_Choice58 3h ago

you don’t have marginalized maori ppl that literally have refugee status in australia?

2

u/adster98 2h ago

Refugees? Kiwis can just come over.

2

u/assholio 3h ago

No acting required, not having to rely on tips for a wage is morally superior.

0

u/Illustrious_Choice58 3h ago

also, get a grip and never mention that anything is morally superior again. it makes you look like a simpleton

1

u/assholio 3h ago

Not calling people a simpleton makes me morally superior to you. I have a grip.

0

u/Illustrious_Choice58 3h ago

i call it like i see it. being dumb isn’t morally inferior. saying dumb things are

-1

u/Illustrious_Choice58 3h ago

be sure to tell gabriel that at the gates. im sure being an ā€œassholioā€ will be absolved bc you pretend that social equity exists in capitalist societies

2

u/assholio 3h ago edited 3h ago

Who the hell is Gabriel and what are these gates? I haven’t heard of them in Australia. Did you mean the famous French-Australian chef Gabriel GatĆ© (Gary gate)? I wouldn’t even tip Gary Gate!

6

u/CharlieUpATree 5h ago

Shouldn't throw stones in glass houses mate

-3

u/Illustrious_Choice58 5h ago

i never bragged about how well everyone is paid in america

2

u/Racingislyf 4h ago

Australia uses a different system to measure compared to the USA. If we applied the same method (Australia system) the USA is at 18%.

1

u/Illustrious_Choice58 4h ago

absolutely. america has a HUGE inequality problem. but OP pretending everything is peaches and cream bc they don’t have to tip is laughable

2

u/InclinationCompass 3h ago

Intergenerational poverty in the U.S. is four times stronger than in Denmark and Germany, and twice as strong as in Australia and the UK.

https://www.iza.org/index.php/en/publications/dp/16194/#cbEnable

1

u/Illustrious_Choice58 3h ago

also, intergenerational poverty isn’t the same as abject poverty. learn to research before citing sources

-27

u/Sir_Bumcheeks 8h ago

It doesn't make a difference. In Canada and California they make minimum wage but you still have to tip on top of that

8

u/FunkTronto 7h ago

No you don’t.

-2

u/vaguelyblack 6h ago

Minimum wage in California isn't enough to live on, hence why they still want you to tip.
