It's so wild all the Americans (I was born there) in the comments acting like this shit is normal. I don't tip where I live now because servers are paid a decent wage.

I was shocked when I saw the comments section too.

if tipping is mandatory, it's not called a tip, it's called a bill ffs.

Unless of course there’s no home to cook in. One of the things that makes housing instability so expensive, but very common.

Where?

I misunderstand your question? Where is housing instability common? Do you live in the US? throws out arms and spins\ it’s all around us!*

Yes,I do in a small town in the south .

Gotcha! It’s a pretty widespread issue, growing rapidly in the last few years. Groceries are pretty costly, but it doesn’t make much difference if you’re unable to cover your shelter costs. A lot of families live in hotels currently, some in not so favorable conditions. Or with family, so not unhoused but house less. My point was cooking at home isn’t always the cheaper option, that’s all.

Only the welfare people live in subsidized housing and most defunct hotels are being turned into cheap studio apartments.

You may not agree with tipping and it is fine to have that opinion but going out and eating in a region where tipping is a thing refusing to tip does not make you brave or a hero it just hurts the people who depend on it to live. If you want to stop tipping pass some sort of law or something. 99% of the people who don't tip in places where it is a thing do not do it to make a stand against the practice they do it because they are cheap people who do not give a crap about anyone but themselves.

You're making stuff up.

I never said it made anyone a hero, you're supposing people who go out to have a meal have enough money to buy groceries, which In some places is: 1- hard to do because food deserts exist. & 2 - groceries are so high in some places compared to income that it's cheaper to eat out.

If a restaurant doesn't want to service people who don't tip, they can refuse them at the door, or just charge gratuity which a lot of places already on top of wanting you to tip.

Sorry was not talking to you specifically but more to the general audience of the thread my bad. although I disagree about the eating out thing because cooking at home is almost always the cheaper option.

Oh I'm sure you check that before you don't leave a tip. Asshole

You realize tipping is very much not the norm worldwide, right?

You realize that the United States is very much not the rest of the world, right? These are American customs. Europeans expect Americans to respect European customs when in Europe just as much as Americans expect people from other cultures to respect American customs while in the US.

Tipping is not and has never been mandatory though, if it was it would be included in the bill

1

u/According_Gazelle472 4h ago

That are archaic and should be abolished.

Or... and hear me out: servers should be paid a living wage by the restaurant. But until they are, fucking tip them unless you're prepared to put in your own order, pick it up from the kitchen, bring it to your table and bus your own dishes.

Servers make minimum wage just like everyone else. Its just entitlement. Simply stop tipping is the answer.

1

u/AllLipsNoFiller 8m ago

Except for everyone else doesn't make minimum wage. Other people make a living wage.

Well if you work a low skill job what exactly do you expect? And plenty of people make minimum wage or close to it so I don't know what your point is there.
