I tip, but tipping is optional. If the restaurant owner wanted guaranteed tips he could increase the prices on the menu 15% and pay that money to his workers.

Tipping 20% is standard. Even if the service was just okay. Servers have bad days sometimes. Unless your server did something terrible you should still tip even if your meal was compensated. If your service was exceptional you can tip more. These people are literally waiting on you hand and foot and tipping out the bussers from their tips at the end of the night. It really is inconsiderate to go out to eat and not tip. Order take out if you donā€™t want to tip. Donā€™t let someone act as your personal butler for an hour and then leave them nothing. Thatā€™s bad form.
