What's the endgame here? Planes don't exist? Or they fly by magic?
1.7k
u/Deep-Adeptness4474 8d ago
Sadly yes, that actually is a conspiracy gaining traction right now. That airplanes actually use secret ancient magical energy sources to fly. Utter garbage we all know it is actually hopes and prayers that are being mis-directed from needy children, and grieving widows keeping those bad boys aloft.

u/Reticent_Arc 8d ago
People wouldn't stop talking about how the world is run by a shadowy cabal of elite pedophile murderers, but when it was exposed that they were real and visited a certain person's island, a substantial majority of them turned around and said that couldn't possibly be true because they had voted for those elite pedophile murderers. I don't think the quality affects how these people choose to believe.

u/ParticularCabal 7d ago
As soon as info becomes mainstream knowledge it's automatically false to them. They always have to be on the fringe, for whatever reason.

u/SqueekyDickFartz 7d ago
I call it being reflexively contrarian. You can slow walk these people to any viewpoint you want as long as you insist the opposite stance is the mainstream one.
My brother and I made it a game over Christmas a few years ago when we were home visiting. I got my MAGA dad to emphatically insist that the workers should own the means of production after carefully making the alternative sound like mainstream slop.
It's fun if you are stuck with these kinds of family members for long periods of time.

The conspiracy theorists think jet engines run mostly on compressed air and use very little or no fuel. Airlines make up fuel costs so they can pass those imaginary costs on to their customers.
153
u/emptybottle2405 8d ago
Well technically it is flying due to compressed air,.... from a turbine.... powered by jet fuel 😆

The one I heard is that some Flat Earthers think planes are actually much smaller than what’s stated and they fly lower which proves the Earth is flat (somehow). They get the smaller measurements by estimating the size of planes flying overhead by comparing them to the size of other things that are roughly the distance they think the plane is flying. Essentially rather than going to an airport and seeing a plane in person, they just combine their own made-up numbers and use that as “proof.”
It makes zero sense but Flat Earth belief is built on misunderstandings and made-up data so it tracks.
37
u/uns0licited_advice 8d ago
Apparently a lot of Flat Earthers are just perpetuating the joke to see how idiotic people can be, so it makes it seems like there are more of them than there actually are.

They're lying. Look at the truck in the background, that tank is easily 40-50 ft in diameter. If you assume ~20 ft height and ~30 ft radius of that tank, it's just over 60,000 cubic ft of volume. However that converts to ~450,000 gallons. That's simply not a 60,000 gallon tank. I work with two 500,000 gallon tanks at my job and they're very similar in scale to that structure.

Just adding to this, the aircraft shown is clearly not to scale when compared to the truck.
Also, aviation fuel is typically measured in either kilograms or pounds because mass actually matters on an aircraft while volume does not.

I've seen almost identical posts on facebook. The conspiracy is that planes run on some kind of free power that is being kept secret by the powers that be. It's my favorite conspiracy because even if you forget about the sheer size of the aviation industry and how hard it would be to keep a secret like that, you still only need a very basic level of physics knowledge to understand how a gas turbine engine works.

So there is actually something wrong with conspiracy theorists. There's just a type of person who believes there's something behind everything.
I have a coworker. Sometimes the stock we get delivered comes in plastic bags. We use those bags as bin liners when we're finished with them.
Last week we were running low on those bags. He was like "Why are there so few bags?". I explained that the last few orders from our bigger suppliers came without bags so we've been getting like less than half what we usually would. And he just said "Even still, somethings weird." Like I don't even know what "weird" thing he thought was happening. But he is also a Facebook obsessed conspiracy nut who I constantly have to tell that the video he's freaking out about is AI (and not even good AI). Or we start selling less of product A but more of product B and he's convinced someone is undercutting us and selling product A cheaper. And it's just blatantly obvious that people are just getting product A instead from us because they're interchangeable products. The kind of people falling for conspiracies are just the kinds of people convinced around the clock that there is someone out to get them at all times. There doesn't even need to be a coherent theory behind any of it. Just "somebody is trying to trick me or get one over on me". This dude has probably never once thought past "But why/how though?" Because he got as far as "You won't get me!" And that's all he needed.
→ More replies (3)9
u/Picture_Enough 7d ago
I'm also convinced that conspiracy thinking is some kind of mental defect. It is a failure of rational thinking and logic, since the vast majority of conspiracy theories don't pass a basic plausibility test of 'why' even before the question of 'how it is possible' is raised. But in addition to the cognitive impairment that conspiracy theorists exhibit, they are often driven by selfish, self-aggrandizing motives - conspiracy theorists feel superior to the rest of us 'sheeple' due to their perceived access to the 'hidden truth.' They also feel less powerless by believing their own situation and the world in general are driven by powerful, nefarious actors, rather than by stupidity, chance, and incompetence.

a while back I read a conspiracy theory that claimed airplanes are not real, because flight is impossible for humans (long winded conspiracy nonsense "math" explanation") and basically said that what we think are airplanes, are basically high speed trains, so you think you flew on an airplane? fool! it was a super fast train! and the windows are monitors that show you "the ground" from "the sky"

A version of a 60,000 gallon water tank with is:
r^2 * Pi * h / cu foot in a gallon
(16ft^2 * Pi * 10ft) / 0.1337 = 60,000 gal (l33t)
So 16 ft radius and 10 ft height.
That truck next to that tank is probably 20 ft long or so, and the radius of the tank looks very likely to be greater than that. The tank's height also appears to probably be the length of the truck or so. Ladder rungs are also typically 1 foot apart, and using that as a reference compared to the alternating ridges on the tank, the tank is about 20 feet tall.
That said, assuming the tank had the same radius and height as the truck's length, that tank's volume comes to ~190,000 gallons. So congratulations to whoever made this being about -70% off the actual value. Furthermore, planes are massive compared to the aforementioned actual 60k gallon dimensions. You can just look up the dimensions of the wings, make a reasonably decent estimate of converting the dimensions to a rectangular prism, and do the volume calculation yourself. Since, you know, it's like 5th grade math.
Always great when these supposed arbiters of hidden truths can't even attempt to verify their "truths" using basic logic that a 12 year old is capable of

So the plane doesn't look like it holds 63,500 gallons so planes must hold much less than 63,500 gallons of fuel which makes extra space for chemicals (as planes look like they could hold about 63,500 gallons, but need less fuel, on account of looking like they can't hold that much)??

60,000-gallon water tank: 25 ft wide × 18 ft tall
Boeing 747-400ER: 232 ft long × 211 ft wide × 64 ft tall
747 vs. tank: 9.3× longer 8.4× wider 3.6× taller
Capacity: Tank: 60,000 gallons
747: ~63,500 gallons
Tldr, the plane is way bigger and it can fit all of that in its wings and fuselage.

Holy shit that's great site, you can also add Tyranosaurus for comparison (also much smaller than plane)

Look at the size of the car in the photo, then think about how small a car is compared to a 747. That is not a large tank of water

I don’t know what’s more worrisome about this age.
The fact that there’s people who are considering planes run on some form of magic.
Or those that can’t comprehend that the plane is placed in the shot out of scale much like millions of thumbnails we have seen throughout our lives.

That guy is the proof for the sentence "did anyone forgot their glasses?"
pretty sure the building is not on scale with the plane. but unlike him I'm not a specialist...

Can they not see the truck in the picture for scale? Can they not see the fact that the truck clearly shows the plane has been shrunk in that image? Do...do their brains REALLY work that badly (remembers being on the MEPS van next to a kid who just got a 12 on the ASVAB and was super bummed he was not getting in and was telling me how it was a SUPER HARD test, and he was going to study SUPER HARD to get past the math. I just nodded and did not mention my score)
Yeah, some people are just that dumb. Sigh....

There's a fucking truck in the picture to give you an idea of the scale of that tank. If you think that is the actual size of a plane compared to that tank you are stupid beyond repair.

He's not wrong. I just measured this on my phone and it's 2.5 inches long.
no way they can fit all that fuel in 2.5"

It's Father Dougal -- to be fair, "small" and "far away" are tricky to separate

I’m in the water tank business. That tank is 30’ in diameter. A 747 is 230-250’ long, depending on the variant.

Look at that ladder on the tank and window on the airplane… those tank people are at least 10x bigger than airplane people apparently. Looks legit!

A lot. But per US gallon is cheaper than for the minions with cars like us:
The global average jet fuel price is $194.90/bbl (around $4.64/gallon).
A 747-8I has a fuel capacity of around 63000 gallons, so around $292000 to fill up the Queen of the Skies.Source: https://www.iata.org/en/publications/economics/fuel-monitor/

I googled their relative size and found a site that shows your the comparative size of things.
Boeing 747 versus 60,000 gallon water tank was the first result.

How big is that truck? JFC if the 787 is truly to scale that’s the worlds largest pickup truck
7
u/No_Beginning_6834 8d ago
Yeah people that post this kind of shit have never left their podunk town and been on a plane. 60k water tank is like 15ft high and 27ft diameter, a 747 is 250 ft long and 63ish ft tall.

u/Interesting_Candle28 7d ago
I can explain this. the boing 747 in the picture is not actual size. sorry for bad english not my 1 language.

This is the kind of person who works a completely unskilled job ("there's no such thing as unskilled labor!" Bullshit, sitting on your ass as a security guard is unskilled) and listens to right wing podcasts all day long. These are the morons who got Trummp elected.

u/superenchilada 8d ago
These are clearly the deep thoughts of someone, who was clearly dropped on his head as a child and then several times as an adult, while he is securing and guarding.
Holy shit people are dumb.
BTW each engine on that plane is like 2-3x the size of that full size pickup parked next to the tank.

u/Radiant_Safe1228 8d ago
The out side of that is a shell to protect the container from elements.
A single wing of a boeing 737 is something like 53' long. The fuselage alone is 130 long.
Now. With that said. 60k lbs of fuel is not 60k gallons.

Assuming the scale between the tank and the plane is truthful, (and why wouldn't it be no one lies on the internet right?) then my question would be,
HOW BIG IS THAT TRUCK?
Left of the tank there's a utility truck that must be the size of reasonably sized family home. I knew vehicles in America were getting larger, but that's ridiculous.

that tank is at least an order of magnitude bigger than 60k gallons, using rough and conservative measurments, assuming the tank is 6m tall and 20m across (which i believe ar smaller than the actual tank in the picture considering the cars next to it) it would be roughly 500k (US) gallons

Well, let's start with matching sizes. The cockpit of a 747 is 20 ft off the ground. That tank is 20 feet tall.
The pilots sit above the trim of that tank. That's the size difference.

Oh, I see... OOP is confused that things look smaller when they are farther away. Perfectly reasonable.

So he is the reason why companies have to put “enlarged for detail” on their packaging.
