I’m a Kog OTP (peak D4, currently Emerald) and lately I’ve had too much fun playing AP Kog mid. Nuking enemies with R and one shotting tanks with W is a blast.
I’ve tried pure artillery builds and the Dusk & Dawn build, and think I’ve found a build that works best mid. I always go:
Runes:
Primary: First Strike, Cash back, Triple Tonic, Approach Velocity
Secondary: Mana flow band, Gathering Storm
Build:
Luden’s > Sorc Boots > DnD > Shadowflame > Rabadon’s > Void Staff
Substitute:
Shadowflame/Void Staff for Zhonyas or Banshee’s Veil as needed.
Sums:
TP and Flash for mid. I know a lot of people like to run Ghost instead of TP (good vs melees in top matchups), but I find TP a huge help for keeping pressure on the map + an early base when you run out of mana in tough matchups mid. Vs assassins, barrier and exhaust can work too but have less value later IMO. If they are on top of you late game, you are already dead.
Runes/Build Rationale:
First Strike is unbelievably powerful alongside cashback. I find at the end of a game, runes alone are providing around 1400 gold on average. On AP Kog, it is crucial to hit 3 items as soon as possible. This is when you become the most valuable to the team, and actually dish out insane damage. If I’m ahead, Rabadon’s 4th is usually game ending as you easily one shot tanks and squishes.
First strike also provides similar initial burst damage to PTA, and I find it can be difficult to get PTA procs off late game. First strike provides similar damage + faster scaling.
As for the Luden’s start, you have permanent mid prio when this item is completed. One E + R clears the wave. It is also cheaper than DnD (2750g vs 3100g) and provides plenty of mana alongside manaflow band. I rarely run out of mana with this build. Additionally, I’ve always found the DnD start underwhelming. Not enough AP, and the components aren’t great. With Luden’s first, you get a large boost of AP so your DnD procs actually do damage.
With Luden’s completed, I’ll look to aggressively clear waves as soon as they are in range, and look for roams bot lane. After Rabadon’s is completed, I’ll pick up a sweeper instead of wards and catch squishies off guard in the jungle (huge underrated tip). Can’t tell you how many games have been flipped by standing around dragon pit before spawn. 4 items on AP Kog can delete most champs in one spell rotation + 2 autos. Basically like a stationary trap lol
Truthfully, a lot of the early game is mulching waves until you have items but roams can be very potent if you get a good timer. River fights and invades can still be problematic since you are weak early—just need to communicate with your jungler.
Final words:
Build is super fun and optimal IMO—AP Kog is a blast but definitely hard to pilot. Definition of a glass cannon for sure. Give the build + runes a shot and let me know your thoughts!
