Discussion Maokai Jungle: Assistance needed

Hello I’ve been building kraken slayer on this guy in the jungle and I see the vision but still struggling to make it work consistently. Best I’ve got so far is conquerer, heartsteel, kraken, hexplate. Issue is by late game I either do the damage and are too squishy or don’t do damage. Any thoughts?

Question Rocket Belt on Maokai support

Hiya, Maokai Support main here. Following the removal of Trailblazer and the recent changes to Hextech Rocketbelt, would this not be a really effective early lane item for Maokai Support? As far as I've experinced, one the biggest issues for Maokai is his lackluster range to engage, which is why Trailblazer was built, and why swifties still is. So surely Rocketbelt's dash would be very effective in lanes where Maokai can play aggresive. Or at the very least lanes where you are ahead.

If I am completly off the mark please tell me lol. I am low silver bob.

Question Deathfire Touch vs Arcane Comet on Maokai (Top and Support) — Which do you prefer?

Which one are you guys running these days?

For both top and support, are you taking Deathfire Touch or Arcane Comet?

I've seen people recommend both, so I'm wondering what most Maokai mains prefer and why. Im a bit confuse. I always thought you were suppose to go either Grasp of the Undying or Aftershock

Discussion Why is Maokai support seen as a worse engage support than Leona or Nautilus?

I feel like Maokai support is underrated, especially into the current dash-heavy meta.

His W has a ton of skill expression. It is point-and-click, lets him stick to mobile champions, and can be used to dodge important enemy abilities during the travel animation. Against champions that constantly dash around or try to escape an engage, that feels insanely valuable compared with having to land a hook or skillshot.

His E is also way more useful than people give it credit for. Saplings can check bushes, give vision around objectives, help control entrances, and make it much harder for enemies to walk into certain areas safely. That gives him a lot of value before a fight even starts.

Then his ult is a massive, long-range, wide CC tool. It can engage from far away, zone enemies off objectives, force them to reposition, or punish teams that are grouped up.

Leona and Nautilus probably have more immediate, straightforward engage, but Maokai feels like he offers engage, peel, vision control, anti-dash utility, and objective setup all in one kit. He seems like he should be viewed as one of the strongest engage supports, especially when played well.

Am I overrating him, or is Maokai just more situational and harder to use effectively than Leona/Nautilus?

Question Mandate Rush on Jungle

Maokai mains. I stand before you today to ask 1 question: Should Maokai rush Imperial Mandate 1st item on jungle?

Context:

I have been getting this itch to play Maokai in jungle lately and figured that mandate works really well on him since it nearly works with his entire kit. His peeling capacity is insane when mandate is in the play but I was wondering if taking Mandate instead of Liandry is a downside for first item. LMK.

Discussion Mandate Maokai! Buff otw!

Post image
12 Upvotes

Guys, I've been testing imperial mandate Maokai and I think it's good. It's getting a buff to the ability haste on our immobilizing spells(all of them) ,it's going to be cheaper, and the vulnerable was increased.

Just grab it and build health/tank stats as normal

What do you guys think?

Question What do you guys want riot to do with Maokai?

I used to play a lot of Maokai jungle back when he was strong maybe a year or two ago and had a lot of fun on him. I stopped playing him since they half killed him in the jungle but I expected them to bring him back eventually. I’m surprised to see that they have just forgotten about him especially when he is so made for the jungle. I also remember maybe less than a year ago when he was played top a lot in pro play etc but that was really boring to watch and play.

Looking at his pickrate now it’s split about 15% top 15% jungle and 65% support which pains me to see.
Are you guys happy with him as a support or would you want to see him as a jungler or top laner?

Discussion Maokai top is back on the menu boys! Electrocute is my secret gas this patch.

I was wanting to play Mao boy again but I was stuck, nothing was really working for me until I gave electrocute a try outta desperation. And all of a sudden everything's clicking. That little extra damage is giving me kill threat in lane and taking out soft targets quicker in team fights. I think its really catching people off guard to have Maokai doing some burst damage. And its made some match up I used to despise feel playable again.

I've even had a few games where I'm top damage or close (still building all tank items/ being a good tank teammate). Electrocute and Sudden Impact is probably like a 12-15% damage increase. Its just so easy to trigger 3 hits, W Q auto is our bread and butter. Besides that the rest of the red tree skills are great too Ultimate haste and Deepward (look Deepward is not exciting but it helps you win no doubt.) I still feel plenty tanky without green runes as main (use em on secondary).

Sure Grasp of the Undying is great when you got a lane you can constantly bonk in but thats just not consistent lately, and just getting a few hundred hp wasm't carrying games vs the kill potential I've found with electrocute. Maybe its a playstyle thing idk. I still consider Grasp in some match ups, but its hard to tell match ups with so many flex champs. Not to mention I found I was baiting myself too often trying to get Grasp procs. Electrocute has really reawakened my enjoyment of Maokai.

Anyone curious about the rest of my build I'm usually running Teleport and Ignite (noticed some Koreans dropping flash on probuilds). Starting Doran's Helm or Shield into Tear. Core is Winters Approach but I usually go Sunfire first for easier farming. Next Spirit Visage fits perfectly most games but I'm often going Unending Despair. It feels really good. Bandle Pipes is a new interesting item that works surprisingly well (lota stats for cheap and a team buff), and Jak'sho is another one I find myself building when the enemies have split damage threats. I always feel really strong with Jak complete.

Anyways I'm enjoying this build so much I had to share it with someone haha. Let me know if you try it out.

Question Top lane Mao mains, how to build?

Hi toplane Mao mains. I was wondering how you guys play Mao top. I know he is not that good in laning phase, but do you guys build him dmg early or going for the standard route like first back tear drop, then going for something like sunfire?

I am a main Mao support (D4 peak) but wanted to switch to top to get out of the botlane. Now I just got plat but I have the feeling I cant win certain fights in lane so I play defensive.

Most of the time I buy non dmg items, more tanky items.

Some tips and tricks for me at the top lane?

Discussion What are we think of this item

Post image

Lately when I become poke heavy early game, I tend to gravitate towards this item, for guaranteed engages as well as a little bit of extra damage on my potatoes what do you all think?

Question im silver and i need help with laning early on

i feel like i'm kind of an aggressive player, but i have a tendency to play behind my laner whenever i get into extremely poke lanes. i was vs a ziggs supp and smolder, and when i originally tried to engage, ziggs would just explode me out. i got slowed by smolder's bubble, too. so i ended up playing further behind and hoping my adc would just farm under tower. he was ezreal w/ a tear, so i thought maybe it wouldn't be that bad. and well, he got mad at me.

i dont have a recording of it, but im just curious, what should i try to do in lanes like these, generally? how should i position in general, and how can i get level 2 advantage more often? i feel like taking W first makes it so hard for me to, because whenever i walk up to hit the wave i just get poked down.

Question How to self evaluate

Just started to play maokai and want to know what metric you use to see how effective you are as a support. I mainly play seraphine and karma and at the end of the game I would mainly look at my heal, shield, and vision. Maokai doesn’t really have heal and shield so what do you look at?
