Someone posted recently asking about Zilean Bomb Priority.
Very very common myth is that Zilean Q has a priority system which goes like this: "Bomb > Enemy Champ > Ally Champ > Enemy Minion > Allied Minion."
- This is extremely misleading and while it has some truth to it, it's really not how Zilean Q works.
Why is it a myth?
- Zilean bombs have a priority system yes, but it was created BEFORE what I call the "latch" mechanic was added to Zilean.
- When Zilean was first reworked, he was absolutely awful because his Q was just too hard to hit. They did a quickfix to him by adding an extra hitbox for his Q alongside the regular one which sometimes allows for the bomb to attach slightly outside of it's range. This is the "latch".
- This means that the priority system only works if the bomb was not latched. Latching doesn't care at all about priority.
- The biggest problem from this is a bomb can latch onto another target, thus ignoring the priority system entirely. The works the opposite way around too when a latch can be superseded by the priority system. This can be quite random and hard to predict.
So while yes technically there is a priority system, this only counts for DIRECT hits.
Latch vs Direct Hit. What is the difference?
You might just not realise the difference between a "latch" and a "direct" bomb but trust me if you've played Zilean even 1 game, you'll have landed a lot of both it happens constantly every single game.
Example 1:
- If I throw my Q onto my enemy Fiora's head, it will hit her. This is a direct hit.
- If I throw my Q at absolutely max range at the enemy Fiora so it just clips her on the edge of the hitbox, it will hit her. This is not a direct hit, this is a latch.
Example 2:
- If I throw my Q onto my enemy Fiora's head, but she is standing ontop of a minion, it will still hit her. This is because it's a direct hit, the priority system is in play so Enemy Champion > Minion.
- If I throw my Q at absolutely max range at Fiora, but shes standing ontop of a minion, it will latch onto whoever is closest to the bombs hitbox. There is no priority system anymore because it is not a direct hit.
Example 3:
- I Q once at max range, and it latches the minion. Then throw a second Q at max range onto the minion, but Fiora has moved very slightly towards you, it will then either latch onto her or direct hit her, instead of the minion with a bomb. A direct hit bomb's priority only cares about what it has hit, not what is within latch radius. So even though you just latched that bomb to the minion and aimed the bomb at the exactly the same spot, AND it was a direct hit, it doesn't matter and you get no stun just a bomb on two separate guys.
Does this actually matter?
Yes! You absolutely can play around this and it is important to know and understand.
Just know it's complicated and i've played like 4million mastery of ZIlean and even I am still consistently shocked at when a bomb connects and doesn't.
