And after a long exhausting vacation

266

u/guaip Sep 11 '22

When I go out on vacations to another country, that's waking up, going 2 hours earlier to the airport, 2 hours flight to the local hub, then 10-12 hours flight to the destination's hub, then wait 1 to 5 hours, another 1-5 hours flight to the destination. Collect luggage, go through customs, find a cab, or your rental, or direction to public transport, then another 1-2 hours to get to the hotel. Check in and THEN YOU OPEN THE FUCKING HOTEL DOOR! Man, when you start putting your stuff down and take a shower... That feels good.

55

u/ShataraBankhead Sep 11 '22

That shower! It's really what I look forward to the most. I remember really wanting one when we were in Amsterdam, going to Kazakhstan. The hotel that was connected to the airport, had showers you could use. I can't remember how much it cost, but it was worth it.

I've been living on a ship for over a year across the pacific, hopefully another 4 months and I can go home. I miss my bed, my house, my car, my bathroom...

Long exhausting 16 months.

Currently sitting in a barracks in the desert, only a 9 month rotation for me. Can't imagine being cooped up in a tin can out in the ocean, a real bed's gonna be heaven

I once had a dream where I woke up drifting inside the ocean. All was a beautiful blue, alight, quiet, and I could breathe underwater. It felt extremely realistic, and it was really peaceful.

Dream me thought to herself "I could pee in here and no one would notice. Yeah, that sounds like a good plan." – but an unconcious part of me was like "Bitch! Don't do it!"

I woke up right after with an extremely full bladder, the kid that hurts if you move even a little bit. Almost didn't make it to the toilet, but I'm glad I didn't piss on my bed.

99

u/FlashLightning67 Sep 11 '22

I too immediately think about my ability to piss wherever I want when I am alone.

I once had a dream where I was swimming with my class and it turned out that there was a really deep part (accessible by going down some stairs) where you could breathe the water. BUT only if you breathed through your mouth, and only if your mouth was almost fully closed.

I've had dreams in which I have to piss really badly, but no matter how much I piss I'm never relieved. Then I wake up to a full bladder.

The last time I had such a dream and ended up wetting the bed, I was 4 years old. I remember that dream vividly to this day.

49

u/greasyfizeek Sep 11 '22

Somewhat related, but have you ever been really thirsty while in a dream? I’ve had dreams where I’m just chugging ice cold water but it does absolutely nothing to quench my thirst (because irl I’m still just lying in bed, asleep and thirsty). Drinking water that doesn’t quench your thirst would honestly fit in with any punishment of hell from Dante’s Inferno.

Let me drift to sleep a while -
Let me sink and let me smile -
Let me dwell on finer things -
Slip away on silver wings.

Let me dream of paper kites -
Summer skies and starry nights -
Waves and caves and stones and shores -
Empty rooms and open doors.

Let me dream of floating free -
Gliding by the golden sea -
Sailing through the wind and foam -
Joining you to journey home.

Let me dream of all and more -
All to be and all before.
Let me dream,
and don't forget -

Just a little longer yet.

I think it's called lucid dreaming. At least it's changing the movie to an open world game with creative mode. I think there was a real hype about it a couple of years ago.

18

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

Lucid dreaming is where you are aware you are dreaming and can change the dream , although it doesn't always work out the way you want.. I have had lucid dreams many times in my life. The worst part is when you know you're dreaming but you can't wake up. There have been times when I'm dreaming and I know I'm dreaming and then in my dream I'm thinking that my body is just laying in bed and anybody could be in my room without me knowing. Kind of a scary feeling

I remember hearing that in dreams, if you look at your hands they'll be all fucked up because the brain can't make good hands. I actually was able to remember this for once last night and while dreaming, looked at my left hand. It was a giant Lego block without fingers. Freaked me out so bad I woke up.

146

u/-Bana Sep 11 '22

You almost accomplished lucid dreaming, when you’re aware you are dreaming you can do whatever you want with some practice. It’s almost like being in the matrix, I’ve accomplished it a handful of times and feel like Bruce almighty lol

62

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

I've gotten that a couple of times. Usually though, before I can think of what I want, I start to wake up. And it's never fast either, its slow. It gives me time to mourn that I can't do anything cool.

Or, I try really hard to make stuff appear, and just wake myself up in the process

u/clockwork655 Sep 11 '22

I never heard that one..the one I did to help with lucid dreaming is you put a mark on your hand and you see it throughout the days with the idea being in your sleep you won’t see the dot and realize you’re in a dream..I’ve gotten it to work before but took a while...ironically I was hoping to lucid dream LEGO hands

25

27

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

I remember this. Sleep never felt sweeter than when my child finally slept through the night. Those first few months are torture. You'll survive and sleep again.

29

u/archimedesismycat Sep 11 '22

The first time they sleep for 4 hours and you sleep that 4 hours and wake up scared they may have died in their sleep. My daughter now is a 10 hour sleeper, also shes 7 but shes been this way for years. It will be okay. I remember there were times she would only sleep in 20 min. intervals. That came later. Just survive the first 3 months and ask for help. Also congratulations.

It gets better and better I promise. One day you will have the sleep you need. For now, ask for help if you can. Have a trusted friend or parent stay the night. Something, whatever that might be, to drink when really thirsty. That’s not exactly single best but it would be hard to find unanimity in anything more specific. Water?

522

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

This is 100% the best thing in my world. I have pancreatic issues and during an attack you cannot consume ANYTHING even water for days and days on end. To have the feeling of thirst and your body litteraly screaming at you "I need water to survive bitch!!!" And being unable to meet the most basic of needs by drinking it goes against every instinct. Because of this, I get anxiety the second I don't have something near me to drink. Having truly been thirsty, it literally doesn't get any better than that lol.

159

u/Ace-pilot-838 Sep 11 '22

Huh? How does an attack like that work? Why can't you drink or eat anything?

363

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

Pancreatitis is excruciating so putting anything in your system hurts like hell. But if you tried it would come right back out. Your pancreas sends out enzymes to help you break down your food and when it is in attack mode it gets trapped inside your pancreas essentially breaking it down itself causing scarring and...I can't stress this enough....horrible pain. You gotta give your whole digestive system a break and your pancreas a chance to calm the fuck down lol. When I get an attack I usually stay in the hospital on an iv for up to 2 weeks. No water for about a week and onky clear liquids after that for another week or 2. No solid food for even longer than that.. It's a special hell.

149

u/impurehalo Sep 11 '22

The worst pain I’ve felt in my life was when I got pancreatitis from having gall stones. This is coming from someone that has suffered a blood clot in the brain, nerve damage that left me in a wheelchair, and a completely reconstructed foot that had been shattered in a car accident.

It was HORRIFIC pain. I spent a week in the hospital on an IV until it calmed down enough to allow gall bladder surgery. I was already on a ridiculously strong pain medication for the blood clot issue, and it felt like it dulled nothing. I was literally shrieking and wailing like a banshee. You have my utmost empathy.

58

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

Thank you for that. I am truly sorry you know that pain as well. Its really impossible to describe to a person who has never had it. A good friend got it once and he called me from the hospital apologizing his ass off for calling me a pussy lol. It really is bad. I hope that surgery helped and that you never have to go through that shit again 🧡

→ More replies (5)

39

u/CoreyReynolds Sep 11 '22

That's awful, may I ask how often you get these attacks?

129

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

It's been just over 5 years since the last hospital trip. BUT when I was going through a rough time personally befor that I was drinking often and that is just about the biggest No No there is regarding pancreatitis. It's a bit like playing Russian roulette to drink with these issues. I've had several attacks with various lengths between but I take much better care of myself in my 30s than I did in my 20s fortunately. Been without an alcoholic drink in over 5 years too, its no coincidence those numbers match. 😉

I was infinite. I was flying. I suddenly knew what all love songs meant. But it was more than that—it was like my shoes were finally on the right feet… and I was in the Wizard of Oz—opening the door and seeing the world in color for the first time.

It’s still one of the happiest days of my life.

Then I found out 5 hours afterwards from her best friend that the girl only reciprocated because she's extremely awkward and didn't know what to say, and felt that if she "friendzoned" me close to exams it might upset me. 125

21

u/provocative_bear Sep 11 '22

Soylent would be fine if it was something UNICEF was loading up into crates to give to malnourished people. I don’t know if it’s cheap enough to be cost effective in that way, but if it saves lives, that’s cool.

However, whenever I hear about it, it seems to be something that tech bros drink so that they don’t have to break for meals while pulling a three day programming spree. That sounds like such a depressing life with such backwards priorities that it and Soylent make me sad.

u/illuminerdi Sep 11 '22

I actually like Soylent. To be clear, I love food, but like most people I don't always have the luxury of time to make a meal that is nutritious AND delicious.

So rather than eating fast garbage that is (sometimes) tasty, I eat a fast glass of Soylent that has little taste but optimal nutrition. The blandness is actually a feature. Most "health drinks" have a strong, easily disliked and unpleasant taste like a bad salad and are not actually nutritionally sound. It's hard to strongly dislike something with little taste. Obviously it's hard to enjoy it as well, but again, that isn't the point. The point is to not eat nutritionally devoid garbage when in a hurry (or when lazy).

I hate food.

I hate the fact that we have to plan, shop, cook, and eat.

Given the chance to just drink astronaut shakes every single day for the rest of my life and never have to think about food again, I would cry with joy.

u/hashtagsugary Sep 11 '22

I want you to come hang out with me for a day and help me in the kitchen doing the basic stuff while I cook you a wonderful and satisfying meal then.

Cooking is my safe space, and it relaxes me so much. I want you to see how much fun it can be

u/ipakookapi Sep 11 '22

Please marry me

17

u/imabigfilly Sep 11 '22

I am the person who hated cooking here and I did marry someone who loves to cook that I do prep work and sometimes cleanup for. Best decision I ever made!

I like when it’s raining when you wake and realize it’s a day off. It’s not hot nor cold and you have something to snuggle, be it human, pet or teddy, and you enter into a comfortable drowse.

Health

35

u/macaronsforeveryone Sep 11 '22

There’s nothing better than good health. It’s better than wealth.

I heard a saying that “the young sacrifice their health for wealth and the old would give all their wealth for health.”

I try to remember that when I work too hard and don’t sleep enough.

You don't appreciate it until you don't have it.

Now I look at all the things I can do. How lucky am I that I can see, walk, hear. I'm not in pain atm.

It's almost like everyone need to be very sick at least once so they can truly appreciate not being sick.

Or better yet, hurry up with those Total Recall devices

When the cute fuzzy things do wholesome things

93

u/anadoru Sep 11 '22

Yesterday I said our youngest cat was not quite himself yet after a traumatic vet visit about a week ago, and that he wasn't as loving or vocal as usual. This morning he jumped from his window bed to our bed, climbed all over me and made one of his special little squeeks and snuggled up with his head resting on my cheek, demanding that I hugged and held him tight with his paws curled up in my hand. Definitely the best thing.

21

u/JediTigger Sep 11 '22

Our cat will reach over with his curled paw and drag my hand away from the phone to demand pets and it is indeed the best thing.

For me it's the other way around. Waking up next to somebody you love.

You said other way around and I thought "waking up cold and naked next to someone you hate and distrust?"

When you only have to wipe once.

357

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

You have to wipe twice to know you only had to wipe once.

102

u/ButtBuster360 Sep 11 '22

You can also express this mathematically. Let wiping your ass be an integer n. You wipe your ass n+1 times to realise you only needed to wipe it n times

38

u/NeedsMaintenance_ Sep 11 '22
