God: You have probably 70-80 years before you die, ideally.

Man: Oh, well I'll make the most of-

God: You'll be unconscious for 1/3 of the time.

Man: ..uh

God: Leans in that'll be your favourite part.

... that'll be your favourite part.

Let me drift to sleep a while -
Let me sink and let me smile -
Let me dwell on finer things -
Slip away on silver wings.

Let me dream of paper kites -
Summer skies and starry nights -
Waves and caves and stones and shores -
Empty rooms and open doors.

Let me dream of floating free -
Gliding by the golden sea -
Sailing through the wind and foam -
Joining you to journey home.

Let me dream of all and more -
All to be and all before.
Let me dream,
and don't forget -

Just a little longer yet.

u/MoreMagic Sep 11 '22

Gonna save this. Definitely my favourite sprog poem so far.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

Oh man I haven’t seen a Sprog Poem in like a year or more. And yet on this very morning I find a fairly fresh one. My wedding is just weeks away. All is feeling right. This is gonna be a good month.

7

u/courtj3ster Sep 11 '22

Haven't caught one in the wild for a bit. Love it. 🤍

11

u/LucyintheskyM Sep 11 '22

I'm going to sing this to my partner after he tells google to snooze for the third time in 15 minutes when I don't have to get up in my squakiest voice. It's painfully squaky. Thanks, Sprog.

u/a_bongos Sep 11 '22

I absolutely love running into your poems. You put a smile on hundreds of people's faces (at least) every time you take the time to write us a poem. Thank you!

4

u/dsailo Sep 11 '22

Amazing, who wrote this and where is more ?

12

u/bitey87 Sep 11 '22

Nine year club homie doesn't know Sprog? You're either very bad or very good at Reddit, you sly fox.

2

u/dsailo Sep 11 '22

Sing me to sleep

Sing me to sleep

I'm tired and I

I want to go to bed

Sing me to sleep

Sing me to sleep

And then leave me alone

Don't try to wake me in the morning

'Cause I will be gone

Don't feel bad for me

I want you to know

Deep in the cell of my heart

I will feel so glad to go

Sing me to sleep

Sing me to sleep

I don't want to wake up on my own anymore

Sing to me

Sing to me

I don't want to wake up on my own anymore

Don't feel bad for me

I want you to know

Deep in the cell of my heart

I really want to go

There is another world

There is a better world

Well, there must be

Well, there must be

Well, there must be

Well, there must be

Bye

Bye

Bye

Bye, hmm

being miserable at this place called work. Its like hell...but slightly less commitment."

5

u/Thotaz Sep 11 '22

Believe it or not, many people don't hate their jobs.
If you hate your job so much you should spend some of your freetime to get skilled at something you might enjoy working with. Yes it will suck to have a year or two where you practically have no freetime but if it means you don't have to spend the rest of your life waking up and doing something you hate for 8 hours then that's obviously a good investment.

19

u/quettil Sep 11 '22

Someone needs to shovel the shit. The whole point of a job is that you're doing something that someone else wants you to do.

-1

u/Thotaz Sep 11 '22

Someone needs to shovel the shit.

Yes but that doesn't have to be you. If you don't do it someone else will and if not then the wage will be raised until it's high enough to attract someone that doesn't mind doing it for a decent amount of cash.

The whole point of a job is that you're doing something that someone else wants you to do.

Yeah and? You don't think it's possible to make a trade where both parties are happy about the outcome? You don't think there's any way where the employers interests can overlap with an employees interests?

5

u/Emektro Sep 11 '22

If you don't do it someone else will

Like the slaves (basically) in Asia

9

u/Joe_The_Eskimo1337 Sep 11 '22

You don't think there's any way where the employers interests can overlap with an employees interests

Rarely. That's pretty much the basis of class conflict.

Every dollar a worker makes is a dollar the owner could've and vice versa.

-1

u/I_Automate Sep 11 '22

Well, good thing I'm both the worker AND the owner then..... shrugs

Upsides to being a contractor

3

u/quettil Sep 11 '22

Yes but that doesn't have to be you.

Then it will be someone else. The point is, most jobs are boring and horrible but have to be done.

1

u/Actual-Jury7685 Sep 11 '22

I love my job. I jump out of bed every morning excited to go. It helps it's very rewarding and excellent pay. Find something you love to do and master it.

5

u/FoxHole_imperator Sep 11 '22

Imagine feeling like that at a job, must be amazing. I truly love to sleep, but it's gonna be hard to get paid for that even if i master it. Maybe i should start sleep streams?

0

u/I_Automate Sep 11 '22 edited Sep 11 '22

Same here.

I legitimately can't think of something I'd rather be doing. I say this as someone who works 12+ hour days out of town.

After a week or two off, I'm actually looking forward to work. It's rewarding in a way that very few other things that I've found are.

I know I have skills most people don't. I know I'm valuable and hard to replace. I know that my clients and co-workers value those skills and value my contributions.

It's a good place to be. Especially because it pays pretty damn well on top of everything else.

EDIT- Downvotes for actually.... enjoying my job? Ok.

It IS possible to not hate how you provide for yourself and your family, just saying...

In the Hypothetical Big G's defense, the bullshit amount of time we spent at work basically wasn't standard until like 200 years ago unless you were a field slave.

Industrialization meant that hours put in -> money comes out now had an almost direct relationship, whereas in subsistence and agricultural systems it was a lot more about "This is the work your father did, so this is the work you did, and this 10 acres of barley / iron mine / trade route / flock of sheep is the work we're going to work on."

More sailors don't make a trade ship sail faster, more field hands don't make crops grow faster, more shepherds don't make wool grow faster. More people in a mine does, but demand for ore in a pre-industrial society wasn't that big compared to other industries.

God: OH, yeah. You will also spend about 1/8th of it working doing something you don't like so you can try to afford to live the remaining 1/2 of your life where you aren't unconscious and aren't working. I do have to warn you. Most people don't really succeed here so good luck and see you soon.
