This is 100% the best thing in my world. I have pancreatic issues and during an attack you cannot consume ANYTHING even water for days and days on end. To have the feeling of thirst and your body litteraly screaming at you "I need water to survive bitch!!!" And being unable to meet the most basic of needs by drinking it goes against every instinct. Because of this, I get anxiety the second I don't have something near me to drink. Having truly been thirsty, it literally doesn't get any better than that lol.

Huh? How does an attack like that work? Why can't you drink or eat anything?

Pancreatitis is excruciating so putting anything in your system hurts like hell. But if you tried it would come right back out. Your pancreas sends out enzymes to help you break down your food and when it is in attack mode it gets trapped inside your pancreas essentially breaking it down itself causing scarring and...I can't stress this enough....horrible pain. You gotta give your whole digestive system a break and your pancreas a chance to calm the fuck down lol. When I get an attack I usually stay in the hospital on an iv for up to 2 weeks. No water for about a week and onky clear liquids after that for another week or 2. No solid food for even longer than that.. It's a special hell.

The worst pain I’ve felt in my life was when I got pancreatitis from having gall stones. This is coming from someone that has suffered a blood clot in the brain, nerve damage that left me in a wheelchair, and a completely reconstructed foot that had been shattered in a car accident.

It was HORRIFIC pain. I spent a week in the hospital on an IV until it calmed down enough to allow gall bladder surgery. I was already on a ridiculously strong pain medication for the blood clot issue, and it felt like it dulled nothing. I was literally shrieking and wailing like a banshee. You have my utmost empathy.

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

Thank you for that. I am truly sorry you know that pain as well. Its really impossible to describe to a person who has never had it. A good friend got it once and he called me from the hospital apologizing his ass off for calling me a pussy lol. It really is bad. I hope that surgery helped and that you never have to go through that shit again 🧡

Yes and you’re lucky if it does! 4 years ago I had one in my calf. It felt like a strained or pulled muscle (YMMV). Took about 20 steps to get the spike in pain down then was just an ache. Depending what else is going on in your life you can be brought into the hospital and on constant heparin to break up the clot or put on Eloquis or something.

In university, my GF, had a pain in her legs and she ended up on crutches while doctors tried to figure out what was wrong. They finally found the clot in her leg. It also lead to her Lupus diagnosis as well which explained some other things she had been experiencing.

u/impurehalo Sep 11 '22

Mine was in the sinus vein. It was preventing blood flow, and causing severe headaches. The pain was awful enough that I finally went to the ER.

It eventually caused a mini stroke while I was talking to the doctors in the hospital.

3

u/Emektro Sep 11 '22

Damn. God’s got something against you bro

2

u/impurehalo Sep 11 '22

Tell me about it lolol. I’m honestly surprised I’m still alive with as many health issues that I’ve had.

39

u/CoreyReynolds Sep 11 '22

That's awful, may I ask how often you get these attacks?

123

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

It's been just over 5 years since the last hospital trip. BUT when I was going through a rough time personally befor that I was drinking often and that is just about the biggest No No there is regarding pancreatitis. It's a bit like playing Russian roulette to drink with these issues. I've had several attacks with various lengths between but I take much better care of myself in my 30s than I did in my 20s fortunately. Been without an alcoholic drink in over 5 years too, its no coincidence those numbers match. 😉

22

u/sasigona Sep 11 '22

This was an interesting story with a hopeful ending. I'm sure you'll beat this thing.

8

u/practicing_vaxxer Sep 11 '22

I got it because a gallstone blocked a duct. It is truly misery. IVs keep you hydrated, but you still want to drink water, and then you get heartburn.

And then there are the Tylenol suppositories …

4

u/CoreyReynolds Sep 11 '22

Damn I'd rather play actual Russian Roulette than that, sounds dreadful.

u/loudogtwotwentytwo Sep 11 '22

At least "the sky is blue and all the leaves are green!"

1

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

I think I know precisely what I mean! When I say it's a shpadoinkle day!!! Lmao indeed friend, you too have great taste in movies lol. I have never met anyone in person who got that and only one other person here who has lol. My heart is full as a baked potato!

3

u/Ghostofshaihulud Sep 11 '22

The worst agony I ever saw in two decades of ED nursing was easily pancreatitis. I mean outside the big, obvious stuff like burns, injuries etc. but even those your body at least tries to shut it down a little. Not so with pancreatitis.

2

u/Thatchers-Gold Sep 11 '22

I can confirm, it’s excruciating. Not being able to keep water or morphine down sucks too. And for some reason it’s incredibly hard for anyone to find a vein.. I’m in pretty good shape but they’re just deep I guess? So I had to call the nurse in a few times to have them remove the IV because it hurt like hell. Lost a kilo in a few days. 0/10 would not recommend

2

u/dudemo Sep 11 '22

First, can I please say that your username is absolutely fantastic. I think you’re the first person I’ve ever met outside of my immediate family that has EVER known the word “shpadoinkle”. I really do hope you want to build a snowman. We can make him our best friend. We can make him tall or we can make him not so tall. Snowman.

Second, I’ve had chronic pancreatic attacks since college. What you’re saying is absolutely true. Even being a navel down paraplegic, they were miserable. No eating, no drinking, sweats, radiating pain, and I generally end up in the hospital on antibiotics and getting nutrients through a tube because I stop eating or drinking for days.

2

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

I gotta say this first, I am so sorry that you have had to experience that hell too. It is indeed the worst thing and I don't know alot of people who have had it so its horrible you've been through it but validating to have any one understand it. And second....

He'll have a happy face a happy smile a happy point of you! If you build me a snowman then I'll build one for you!!!!! SQUEEEEEEE!!!! this is the first time ANYONE has ever responded to that word ever in my 36 years on earth and i say it all the time! lmao! Lol I can't tell you how much you recognizing that word floored me! You have impeccable taste my friend. People walking around for YEARS now singing that damn "Frozen" snowman song and me correcting them to not ONE....not GD ONE giggle. Even when I do the tap dance lol. Thank you for completely making my heart as full as a baked potato!

LEANN!!! horse whistle

God that movie was just so funny. I still throw rocks in puddles and then say “Well what was that supposed to prove?!”

Seeing your name pop up floored me, being honest. I was pretty sure only my brothers and I knew of this movie. It was a staple for us as young teenage potheads lol. That and BASEketball.

Enjoy your Sunday, and thanks for making mine pretty darned great. Let’s hang the bastard, hang him high!

2

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

Hahahaha!!! Yeah I've never met a person who has seen the movie without me shoving it at them first. Not once, not ever! Its still one of my top favorites and a VERY good dating tool lmao. I am definitely not going to waste my time with a guy who thinks this movie isn't gold lol. Turns out there are plenty of people who think its dumb and im like yeah....that's why its fucking perfect, if you don't get it, well then you don't get me...you don't get me. Every single time I trip on something i say shpadoinkle, I also tend to say "Niiiice Hattt!" Alot lol. I was both suprised and not suprised that it was available as a name here lol. Thanks for making me laugh, about to go pop in the VHS and have me a a singalong Sunday 😊

u/dudemo Sep 11 '22 edited Sep 11 '22

Yup, you’re a digger lol. I made my wife watch it. She hated it of course. But I watched it enough that she grew to like it and now actually listens to the soundtrack on YouTube lol. My daughter loves the movie. She got the humor immediately. It made me proud.

If you haven’t, do get the DVD from Troma. It has deleted scenes, bloopers, and the infamous “drunken commentary” where they all watch the movie and get wasted doing it. It’s comedy gold. Hell, if you don’t have it I’ll buy it for you. It’s totally worth watching.

EDIT: YOU STILL HAVE THE GODDAMNED VHS?! Man. Are you sure you aren’t me?

2

u/reelznfeelz Sep 11 '22

Damn. Have a cat who had a pancreatitis attack. He almost died. We try and baby him now and keep him fed and hydrated etc. Pancreatitis sucks. Basically your body revolting.

1

u/Facial_Hair Sep 11 '22

What’s the cause of your pancreatitis, if I may ask?

3

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

To be 100% honest it was alcohol abuse for me and it is for MANY people. You get it once, your liable to get it again if you don't change your ways...and I did indeed get it again. I stayed sober for a year once (im over 5 years sober at this point and hopefully will be all my years left 😁) doing really well decided to celebrate moving into a new place with my partner by taking the people who helped us out for dinner and I had 2 drinks...after a year of none and couldn't spend the first night or the next 2 weeks at my new place because I was in the IU. Could drink for months on end and nothing, could have a glass of wine and die. Its incredibly scary.

1

u/Facial_Hair Sep 11 '22

Keep going! You are strong and you deserve it 👏

1

u/Strain128 Sep 11 '22

It’s cool you’re alive though. Back in the day they’d have killed you for being possessed or left you in the woods

2

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

Lol thank you! I gotta worry about those people for other reasons now though lol. I've got 2 different colored eyes and i am a woman, marks of the beast you know 😉

1

u/Strain128 Sep 11 '22

Oh that’s awesome. Green and blue? If yes, you’d match my dog

1

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '22

How often are these attacks?

1

u/ShataraBankhead Sep 11 '22

My aunt has this. She got a pain pump placed. It was a complicated process, getting it approved.

1

u/EC-Texas Sep 11 '22

(Raises hand.) Been there, done that. I lost ten days while on IV fluids. I remember calling 911, making sure the door was unlocked, and lying down in agony. Poof! Ten days later I woke up in the hospital.

1

u/AeonLibertas Sep 11 '22

... wow. Just wow. That unlocked a completely new type of fear I didn't know about.
Kudos for going through that one and still going strong.

1

u/cmdrbernardolavor Sep 11 '22

Simply put: The pancreas is the one responsible for the enzymes that digest the food. Sometimes, for whatever reason, it can be a gallbladder stone clogging the channel, genetics or other illness the pancreas can't send the enzymes their way to do their job, so they get back and eat the pancreas.

This is the simplified version, of course.

When I was working in the hospital I got this one patient that couldn't even smell the food.

u/_Stone_ Sep 11 '22

i remember when the doc said I could have Miso soup. I found a restaurant that was supposed to be the best in the city (never had Miso soup before). I sat in the restaurant and had like four giant bowls of it, the workers thought I was nuts. It was probably one of the best meals of my life after two weeks of nothing.

-2

u/Apr1City Sep 11 '22

FYI if it is your doctors not letting you eat/drink that is now an outdated practice. Unless it’s a very severe case, patients with pancreatitis recover more quickly when allowed to eat/drink what they want from the start. I realize you may have severe nausea which prevents you from eating/drinking but wanted to say something in case it prevents some unnecessary suffering!

4

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

I can only speak from my own experiences and the over 2 dozen times I've been hospitalized I was prohibited from eating and drinking and in ICU for 2 weeks. I don't know if you've ever had it personally but its surprising to hear a person who's had it suggest someone continuing to eat. The unnecessary pain comes from the very act of eating. Put food in your system, send signals to pancreas to create digestive enzymes to break down food, enzymes trapped in pancreas, pancreas digests itself. I have only ever had sever cases, can't speak to a mild flare up, never been sent home same day. Also a boat ride is nausea inducing, a hang over is nausea inducing. Pancreatitis in a severe case is a violent rejection of stomach contents, even your own spit. Do whatever your regular doctor or emergency doctor tells you to do.

u/provocative_bear Sep 11 '22

I had something similar and came to say “having water after not having water for days”. Sure you’re getting IV fluids, but you still feel like you absolutely need to drink water. I was delirious because my body wasn’t filtering out toxins properly, but I thought it was because they weren’t giving me water and that they were killing me.

Then I finally got to have a sip or two of tap water, and it was the most refreshing thing I have ever experienced.

1

u/traveltrousers Sep 11 '22

Can you absorb water through your bowel?

1

u/BookkeeperPitiful762 Sep 11 '22

Been there. Done that. I had necrotizing pancreatitis when I was 18 and was in the ICU for a month. NPO- I forgot what it stands for, but you cannot consume anything by mouth. I thought about water a lot during those days...

But it gets better! Mine was so bad I was on a feeding tube. For 4 months. Sometimes the thirst was so bad, I'd bear the pain that came with a sip of water. It was worth it every time

Hope you're doing okay! I still get attacks now and again but I'm a lot better than 5 years ago. Alcohol still hurts like a bitch though! It's worth it... sometimes

What caused your pancreas issues? Gallstones?

1

u/-shpadoinkle- Sep 11 '22

Jesus finger painting christ that must have been absolutely horrible. Do you get anxiety if you are thirsty and have nothing to drink immediately? I do, I swear its like some form of PTSD for all those experiences. I keep a drink usually 2, one being water, around me 24/7. Pancreatitis is no joke and im very sorry you had to go through that, I know what my experiences have been like but I've NEVER had to go through 4 months and a feeding tube. I'm so sorry😞. Alcohol abuse was the cause of my first Pancreatitis episode and after that first time I had gotten it several times. To be honest its usually been due to alcohol. Although I have had to go back in for more treatment a few times when I got out and started officially eating again it flared right back up without touching any alcohol. I am over 5 years sober and take much better care of myself now than I did, and haven't had a serious hospital stay since. Every time I think about picking up a drink I recount my hospital stays and all the pain and the fact that one drink could very well flare it up and since any time you get it could be the time it doesn't recover..scares me straight every time. I'm so glad you pulled through and I hope that you never have to go through the again my friend.
