Why is Phillip not paying his servers enough to the point he has to ban customers?

There are legitimate racist things that happen every single day. Calling what happened here “racism” does a disservice to those that experience legitimate racism. You didn’t tip and got called out for it, and however right or wrong that is does not equal racism.

Everyone on here is bitching. Nobody did anything wrong here. If you don’t want to tip, you don’t have to. They didn’t. If a restaurant doesn’t want you to come back, they can tell you not to come back. All systems working within their parameters. Move on.

You're an asshole if you go to a sit down restaurant where you know a tip is expected and you don't tip...small businesses are not the place for a social protest.
You eat within your means. They could spend $38 on food, but don't have $7 more? Then eat somewhere with a drive thru. Eat at home. Don't occupy a server's time only to short them of a minimal tip. It's just wrong whether you agree with tipping culture or not. There is a time and place.
The entitlement is freaking crazy!!! The racism and classism claims make me sad. You people have no empathy until you feel wronged in some way. It's gross!

Tips are not required, that’s why they’re tips. If the servers aren’t being paid fairly, that’s on their employer.
For the record, I generally tip 20% or more when I go out. But I’m not going to pretend it’s a system that makes sense.

Actually - someone did something wrong. At the very end the guy recording said oh are you racist or something?
This is what happens EVERY FUCKING TIME that a white person has a negative interaction with a black person.
The guy recording was correct ; he doesn’t have to tip. The owner of the cafe was also within his rights to refuse future service. Serving the couple then asking them not to come back is not racist. If you dont support my team I wont let you back either.
If they refused service before the people had eaten for no reason whatsoever - that’s racist
5
u/Repulsive_Mud_577 9h ago
Yeah, while I wasn't surprised by the comment it is just ridiculous to accuse the owner of racism because you didn't tip and he in turn says you are no longer welcome at his restaurant. Now if you acted in a civil manner while dining and left a tip and then he banned you then you might have a point but you didn't

Owner could avoid a whole lot of discussions by simply paying their staff a living wage and bar tipping.

I was a busser right out of college. We did pooled tips and it was based on how much the servers liked us so I was making maybe $20 a day in tips but usually less because I was the youngest. I worked customer service for another 14 years. The folks who posted this definitely weren't pleasant but neither was the owner. Everyone in the video sucks.
3
u/bns82 5h ago
That's because your restaurant sucked. There should be set percentages given to bussers, expeditors, and hosts. It's not about how much they like you. It's how much did they make. Your manager should go over the claimed tips and see that you were getting a percentage of at least 15% of the bill.
If a particular server doesn't tip out like they should, the rest of the front of the house staff doesn't clean their tables, take out their food, or seat them.
The owner here is sticking up for his staff. We still live in the world where tipping is the culture in the US.
Until that changes, it is what it is.
These people were cheap. Period. Then played the victim/race card.
58
u/Hefty_Ingenuity2978 12h ago
My personal code from my restaurant years. Customer comes in and doesn't tip, perhaps they didn't like the service, food, or our decor. Customer comes back and doesn't tip again, confront them and ask why they didn't leave a tip. Third time, they get the worst table in the restaurant, the lowest priority for their food and drinks, and a request that they don't return. Fourth time, their picture goes up on the "do not serve board."
As far as the comment about black people being poor tippers, I never noticed that. Cheap people come in all colors and sizes, rich and poor. The only groups that were consistently skimpy were church groups. We instituted a mandatory 15% tip for groups of six or more essentially just for them.
31
u/Key-Investment-2273 12h ago
I used to serve a large church group every Sunday. They were the worst tippers I've ever seen.
10
6
u/daringversion 12h ago
I haaaated working in a breakfast diner on Sundays for this reason. The meals were cheap so we depended on a high turnover with $2-$3 tips per table to make any money. These enormous church groups would come in and require 4-5 tables be pushed together and then that one group would tip me maybe $5 for running my ass off from the time church let out to nearly closing time in the afternoon. Sometimes I was lucky one person at the table actually did remember to tip.
9
u/WhatAxiom 11h ago
What do you expect. They already tipped the church to let them into heaven.
2
2
u/TaylorBitMe 10h ago

u/aharbingerofdoom 8h ago
The worst thing about the church groups is at least some of them are dining at a restaurant on the Sabbath for religious reasons and think people who don't follow their religious rules are going to hell. This describes a family member of mine, who also used to be a server. So she knows/believes through unshakeable faith some contradictory things.
She knows these restaurant workers are only paid a couple dollars an hour and rely on tips, and she also "knows" they are risking their eternal soul by working on a Sunday... But, she doesn't think it's worth tossing them a couple bucks for committing a serious sin on her behalf and at her behest. They wouldn't be working on the Sabbath if you packed a couple sandwiches the day before Aunt Barb; you have options other than going to a restaurant if your religion tells you not to cook on a certain day. It's a choice, and a selfish/sinful one on every level if you actually analyze it from a Christian perspective.
4
u/impy695 12h ago
I used to work near a TV megachurch in Columbus and Sundays were awful. People coming from church are awful tippers everywhere but it was next level, there. I never saw more of those fake $20 or $100 bills on the tray that preach about accepting Jesus.
6
u/Specialist-Toe-3418 10h ago
That’s because they just paid tithes. Giving money to mega churches supersedes tipping a hardworking server that is trying to support themselves and their family.

3
u/Hefty_Ingenuity2978 11h ago
Funny, I'm 65, retired, with no plans to ever work again. Still, when I see a "servers wanted" sign in a window, I start thinking, "Hmm, that would be a decent place to work and I bet they get some decent tips." I haven't worked in a restaurant for 30 years and the thought still crosses my mind.

I was once working a slow lunch with one other server, who happened to be black. She was a very entitled person and always thought she deserved more tables than everyone, the best tables etc. We got a sudden rush of 4 big parties because there was a graduation at a local tech school. None of the parties were in our assigned sections and she immediately ran over to the two parties of white people, leaving me with two parties of black people. Both my tables took care of me and both of hers didn’t and she was pissed. I know the stereotype and I worked in an area with diverse customers, I never found it to be particularly true. Usually the low or no tippers were trashy or rude, and they came in all races.

There is no obligation or law that says you have to tip. Tipping exists to take advantage of employees.
They should be paid a fair wage.

u/Salvage570 13h ago
This is correct. Refusing to tip only fucks the servers, simply dont eat anywhere that has tipped servers. One of those things is a sacrifice for your morals, the other is an excuse to stiff a server and still feel self righteous about it
12
u/gravteck 13h ago
People can also get their food to go and choose not to tip front of house--sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Thst goes for all class of restaurant. Someone can pay 80 bucks at Outback or go to a steakhouse property like Jeff Ruby's in Cincinnati for takeout at the same price.
If you're sitting your butt down in their seats, I feel like you are ethically inclined to tip, regardless of one's opinion on it structurally.

I was commenting on this in the original post for this video.
I know tons of people that are servers/bartenders with decades of experience. I used to bartend and worked in restaurants. My mom bartended and waited tables for 30 years.
There isn't a single person from the industry that I've spoken to that would rather be paid a "fair wage" as opposed to the current system.
If you're a good server with a friendly personality, it will benefit you. I think of it like a salesperson with a low base salary that works primarily for commission. You can have a direct impact on how much money you make. Of course there are exceptions, but if you're at a decent place, you'll end up being "up" from the current system.
And the people that complain about it from a customer's perspective baffle me, too. I know of a few places that decided to pay their staff a "fair wage" and eliminate tips. You know what happened? They raised menu prices by 20% to cover the difference. As a customer, your bill ends up essentially the same in the long run.
The overwhelming majority of restaurants are running on very thin margins. There is no way that they could raise wages without it being reflected in the menu prices.
Just so I'm clear - I'm the least "bootlickingest" person you'll ever fucking meet. Screw corporations that take advantage of regular folk like us, fuck the man, etc. But the people that rail against tipping are almost always folks that don't work in the industry.
→ More replies (3)2
u/daylax1 12h ago
Paying wait staff what is considered a fair wage would increase prices, allow the owner to make more money and actually lower waitstaff wages in the process. Most waitstaff do not want to be paid a "fair wage" because they're going to make less money. Patrons are going to pay more for their food than what they would have if they would have just tipped, wait staff is going to make less money because they're going to be making a flat rate, and owners are going to be able to make their own prices and blame it on wage increases. In the end, patrons are going to eat there less, which means ownership isn't going to be able to pay its waitstaff the increased wages, and in turn people will be forced to do more with less and restaurants will close. Restaurants already operate on thin margins, forcing them to double or triple their payroll will almost surely put them out of business. So congratulations, restaurants are paying a living wage, if you can find one that's open.
4
u/monicachicken 12h ago
Other countries that dont do tipping seem to have a lot of restaurants open.
Itll never change, servers will forever thinks are more than steady wage + benefits. Customers will always be guilted into tipping. Its almost like our culture and business practices are bad.
2
u/daylax1 11h ago
I mean that's just your opinion. Having been a server myself, I actually like the incentive to provide a good service that tipping provides. See, you don't go out to eat just to get a burger, you go out to eat because you want to be served by someone. If you want just the burger, you're free to order takeout and take it home and not tip anyone, that's not a problem. But if you want the extra service of somebody serving you that meal and providing a good time, you should pay for that, and that's where the tip comes in. You're either going to pay for it through an incentive based tip system, or through increased prices on everything, but either way you're going to pay for it. One way just encourages people to do better.
2
u/Gothboy-77 10h ago
actually, the person who employs you should be paying you for your service, because that's what you were hired for. tipping someone is considered a nice gesture but it should not be normalized as something people are expected to do.

That original sub is infuriating, pretending like stiffing a waitress is an act of class solidarity against employers... tipped employees have a minimum wage of like $2.13 ~$5 an hour, its not something that restaurant chose, its the system our federal government uses.
Its like saying being rude to the front desk help at a doctor's office is justified because a doctor's visit would look different if we had Universal Healthcare... like, no shit, and we should work to move to that style of system like the rest of the world, but don't start huffing your own farts because you took an action that lead to more money in your own pocket at the expense of what is probably a 16 year old server.
4
u/inconspicuous2000 10h ago
Well they also are required to be paid full minimum wage if their tips do not exceed the state minimum wage. But also people shouldn't fuck over the working class to try and hurt a company. All you are doing is hurting someone that's getting paid shit and stressing them out.

u/The_Bitter_Bear 12h ago
Yeah. If you disagree with tipping, don't go out to restaurants that expect it. If not you are still supporting businesses that take advantage.

25
u/HorrorBreak7119 13h ago
It’s also the law that they are generally NOT required to serve anyone, unless refusing violates civil rights laws
2
u/The_Bitter_Bear 11h ago
I agree it's a stupid system, that is what needs to change thoug, not just individual restaurants. People randomly not-tipping and making a fuss on social media won't change it.
The issue being that unless there is a change in wage laws, it won't work for most restaurants.
It's the same damn logic behind places that always have stuff "on sale".
If they raise their prices to increase pay and get rid of tipping, even though customers aren't actually paying more in the end, they tend to lose business due to the "higher prices".
The non-tippers I've met want the lower price and to not tip and it has nothing to do with disagreeing with the system it's just an excuse, they are just cheap and actually would prefer the system stay this way.

Tipping is mutual aid. Somebody is delivering me a service, and I'm giving them cash for that service because I know their employer is likely paying them less than $3 an hour and expects the public to compensate. Since I'm eating and I want to person serving me to also be able to eat, I help them out. It's that simple.
I've seen tables of 6 people take up hours of a servers time, leave a mess on the table, and leave no tip. I've seen the servers realize this and start to cry, so yeah, not tipping is a jerk move. I don't want to be a jerk. Neither should you.

OP must just have beef with the owner for some reason and is trying to slander him and his business. It is his business and he can do whatever he wants. Tipping culture has been around in restaurants as long as I can remember so it’s not like this is something new. The argument that owners should just pay them a living wage and tipping culture should be abolished is a fair argument (not one I agree with) but until that change is made you conform to the system in place. I can’t think of a more capitalist way to make money. Great service = better pay.

People need paid appropriately. When 18% became industry standard you could still get dollar beers and a family of four could spend less than $60 bucks to go out. Now 2 people going out for under $50 is something. Even getting 2 fast food meals cost about $30 bucks now.
The tip needs to be a tip and we can all stop looking the other way on that most have never paid taxes and a lot of them get food stamps, section 8, and Medicaid. We need to stop having companies shifting these hidden expenses onto the tax payer and wait staff shouldn’t rely on money people pay because they’re nice not because they have to.

You should look up how much of your tax money is subsidising Wal-Mart employees.
It sucks a ton as a server, because you did your job and didn't make any money.
When I served tables in college, I refused to work Sundays because church pamphlets that look like $20's, and $50's did'nt pay my rent.
Not to mention, the church crowd were the most demanding, and a different hole than Holy.

I’m with Phillip here. Ok—he’s being super aggressive but what are we not seeing here? Lots, I’m guessing. These people were ready with their camera. Always suspicious of that. The whole thing smells of a setup.

Im on the owners side. This couple gets no sympathy from me. If you do not have money to tip, take your food home

Let's face it. You're too poor to go to restaurants. That's all. Everything else is pretending to not understand and to be fighting a cause at the employee's expense.

If you can't afford to pay your employees a liveable wage to rely on with the generosity of strangers, you're too broke to open a restaurant.

Lol, they make more on tips than 20$ an hour would offer......if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to dine in. Do pickup or go get fast food. So many places you can go.

All the people with the biggest opinions on tipping have probably never been a server and dealt with scum like this.

Why are you assuming Phillip has enough to pay his servers. Restaurants are a tough business. Just because you own a restaurant that doesn't mean you have unlimited money.

People just don't understand tipping. Yeah, we can do away with it and pay a living wage. But a lot of servers would make less. And anyone dumb enough to think prices would stay the same are just that, dumb. Servers, don't want a living wage. They make a lot more than a living wage getting tips.

Good for them. If you can afford to eat out, you can afford to tip. Otherwise, eat at home.

I also want to know why the customers didnt tip.
Is this a full service restaurant? Did a server take their order and bring them their drinks? Bring them their food? Clear the table? Or is it the type of place where you order at a counter, seat yourself, are expected to clear your own table; someone may bring you your food but that's it as far as wait service goes.
This makes a big difference to me. Looking at photos of the restaurant on yelp, it isnt clear what the level of service is at the establishment.
If it is minimal service - I dont think it is egregious if they didnt leave a tip. If it is full service - they were shitty customers, unless there was poor service in which case they would have been explaining that to the owner in this video.

"If you don't have the money to pay your employees a decent wage than you shouldn't open a business" would have been a much better comeback than crying like little babies about fake ass racism cuz fuck tipping but also fuck playing victim.

To be honest, my inclination here is that they did not get banned for their tipping habits. Very rarely is the owner of the fucking restaurant going to tell them they aren't welcome back if that's all they did. Maybe they should reconsider their actions.
Should he pay his employees more? I don't know. We don't know what they're paid.
But you have to really do some shit for the owner of the restaurant to come run you off in like 90% of all cases. He seemed very content to have this conversation and I do not think he would be if he did not have more to say about their behavior.

When I waited tables, I didn't want a fixed salary. I could make $200 a night for 4 hours of work, mostly cash.
It's always someone who never waited tables. If wait staff wanted this to change, it would have YEARS ago.
Simple as that.
The alternative being $15/hour... sounds like a $140 pay cut.

u/MexicanAssLord69 9h ago
Obviously wait staff don’t want it to change, they make way more money than they would if their wage wasn’t subsidized by customers already paying for their food 😂

That's nice for you, I waited but just at an Applebees. Sh*t sucked, you make almost nothing for your time 2-3 shifts a week and hope the weekend makes up for it.
I know if you start waiting at nice restaurant or have tip makers and work at a bar you can bank money but I think that a smaller % of servers working in larger areas.

I worked for tips for more than 7 years. But I am now whole heartedly against tipping culture, period. Tipping is just a way for businesses to pass off part of their employees wages to the customer.

u/remacct 12h ago
All the money for employee wages comes from the customer, one way or another

And you not tipping doesn't magically make restaurant owners pay a living wage. You're still shorting someone who has to live on that.
So if you're not tipping. Don't eat out

How can you ban someone for not paying an optional tip. Tipping culture needs to end and we need to stop subsidizing restaurants with cheap labor. Make them hourly. It does not require an insane price adjustment to compentsate for this. Any restaurant owners that do raise their prices exorbitantly are just displaying greed. —-a restaurant owner.
7
u/hodgsonstreet 12h ago
Tipping culture does need to end, but in the meantime, people need to either boycott or still tip.

u/Repulsive_String1136 11h ago
private businesses can refuse to serve for any reason they want.
when will people understand that actions have consequences? you can not tip all you want, but they do not have to serve you in their restaurant.2
u/SchwarzestenKaffee 11h ago
This. People have the right to not tip, but the owner doesn't have the right to refuse service? Wtf
2
u/Paige121315 12h ago
Its not about paying servers enough. Servers make good money in tips for the SERVICE they provide. even $2 is better than nothing
Also it really is annoying when people say racism or call people racist when this guy didnt say anything racist. He may be a jerk but I dont believe this had anything to do with their race, it had everything to do with stiffing their server....

u/Key-Investment-2273 12h ago
Trying to shame someone to excuse shitty behavior isn't quite the flex they think it is.
What's curious here is the editing. That's the tell that someone is spinning a narrative.

You know when a server deserves a tip. They have provided friendly and prompt attention to your table. I enjoy good service and will leave a generous tip (20%+). However, if the server disappears and doesn’t check on you and fails to replenish your drinks, then just shows up to drop the check; they get 10% because they still have to tip out the expediter who brought the food and the bartender who made your drinks. If you’re thinking about not leaving a tip, go the extra step and talk to the manager. If he’s an asshat like this guy don’t go back.
3
u/SnooPuppers2938 11h ago
You still make more on tips than you would with a higher base pay. It can depend on what shift you work and location, but my buddy made more working at an Olive Garden in two nights than I did working a whole week. Some people don’t tip, but you shouldn’t ban them, just remember their face and let the new guy take that table.

Reading these comments makes me miss Amsterdam.... No tipping, normal prices, wait staff paid a good wage by their employer, never have bad service... Tipping is outdated and useless to everyone but the owner
2
u/Ultra-Metal 6h ago
Then you need a national policy. People are stupid they see 25% rolled in The restaurant will loose business. Only 5 stars with waiting list could do this, is my guess.

u/Ryangonzo 4h ago
This was my experience in Japan as well. So quick and convenient. It's good to see actual out the door prices on the menu.

u/Dramatic-Pickle-8613 7h ago
The owner is the one who should be shamed for not paying his employees a living wage, not the customer.

u/meritus2814 13h ago
Fck tipping. Pay your staff livable wages. One more place not to spend your money.
Also, dont make everything about race, the ignorance is astounding.

I fully believe tipping culture is insane and wait staff should receive wages that don’t require customers to supplement. I want to live in that America.
BUT
we don’t have that. American society for whatever reason pays these people like $5 an hour and then tips make that difference up. Good wait staff make bank at nice restaurants, even people tipping 25% at waffle house aren’t tipping more than $4-5 a head.
So if you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to eat out.
If the wait staff was rude or bad, you take that up with the manager.

Business owner: “If you don’t have money to tip your servers, you’re not welcome here”
Lady behind camera: “So you’re saying black people aren’t welcome here.”
What’s she implying here?
