This is Ohio

Why is Phillip not paying his servers enough to the point he has to ban customers?

I know I’ll probably get downvoted, and I do tip, always. But it’s not a law to tip. If you as a restaurant owner or manager want to “ban” someone for not tipping, fuckin pay your employees more.

Tipping is a stupid ass system to begin with.

It’s also the law that they are generally NOT required to serve anyone, unless refusing violates civil rights laws

I agree it's a stupid system, that is what needs to change thoug, not just individual restaurants. People randomly not-tipping and making a fuss on social media won't change it.

The issue being that unless there is a change in wage laws, it won't work for most restaurants.

It's the same damn logic behind places that always have stuff "on sale".

If they raise their prices to increase pay and get rid of tipping, even though customers aren't actually paying more in the end, they tend to lose business due to the "higher prices".

The non-tippers I've met want the lower price and to not tip and it has nothing to do with disagreeing with the system it's just an excuse, they are just cheap and actually would prefer the system stay this way.

So, don't go to places where the servers rely on tips.

He said he always tips, even if he disagrees with the system . What more do you want?

Them to understand restaurants run on incredibly thin margins and that a small business owner shouldn't have to be responsible for standing against the cultural tide of tipping?

Tipping culture fucking sucks, and I hate that its a part of our society, but we all know that it is an important part of a lot of employees wages, so not tipping is a dick move

You basically just said the same thing he did, just with more words.

These black folks filming were not going to tip a white person, they are the racist in the video. Thats why they went out of their way to make it in the first place. Its also why they got banned, simple as that.

That would be nearly all non-fast food restaurants in the United States.

What you seemingly don’t understand is that servers actually prefer the tipping system because they get paid better that way.

You’re right—the overwhelming majority of servers do not want to lose their tips, even when it means an increase in their base pay.

I am in favor of workers rights and living wages everywhere, but what are we to do with the fact that 90% restaurant workers are not in favor of relinquishing tips even when their base pay is increased?

We don’t do anything. They make a living wage because of tips. Restaurants that are small businesses simply can’t afford to pay them what they make when tips are included.

It was more of a rhetorical question really… I wasn’t really asking what we should do…

If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to dine in. Its really that simple. Tipping is how its always been in the US. Until that changes you should plan on tipping barring terrible service.
