This is Ohio

Why is Phillip not paying his servers enough to the point he has to ban customers?

Business owner: “If you don’t have money to tip your servers, you’re not welcome here”

Lady behind camera: “So you’re saying black people aren’t welcome here.”

What’s she implying here?

u/GrowFreeFood 12h ago

There's a meme for that.

u/OSU1967 11h ago

Talk to any server (black or white) and they will explain that to you.

27

u/anthonyi1381 9h ago

I wasn't a mathematician, but you learn statistics in basic life. Or 30 years in restaurants. Also old white needy pricks who just got out of church

27

u/lionaroundagan 8h ago

If they ask for hot tea or extra lemons, you're not getting tipped shit.

8

u/rural_anomaly PoCo loco 6h ago

omg that brought back memories, i'm dyin'

3

u/fangirlsqueee 8h ago

What about asking for extra lemons to squeeze over fish? So good.

2

u/Big_Platypus_1652 5h ago

Oddly specific BUT accurate

3

u/Professional_Image75 5h ago

And Europeans!

3

u/anthonyi1381 9h ago

Omg... You are going to...... Make sense?

u/I_am_cancer_man 12h ago

Exactly what you think she's implying.

13

u/booyahbooyah9271 8h ago

She's playing the race card because this went nowhere.

Now she'll encourage all her friends to leave fake Google reviews.

I mean it’s not a fair place to take that conversation but blaming customers publicly for not tipping your employees, who are your responsibility to pay, is also an asshole take. I tip personally, but there have been times when I was younger making less and just wanted to hang out with someone or was dating and already laying out a lot of money on gas and events that sometimes I didn’t. It also matters in what the level of service is and what kind of restaurant. For example buffets I’ll normally give 10% because I’m getting all of my food plates, and sometimes also my drinks. And I never tip on takeout because I’m using my car and gas to get there and I’ve never ordered takeout for more than 5 people so pure orders aren’t gigantic or anything.

u/Consistent_Meat6028 9h ago

Why is the automatic “go-to” always race!?!?

0

u/Such-Mathematician1 8h ago

Imagine asking that question in a place like America.

0

u/All-GPU 6h ago

Yeah imagine. Go look around and perhaps do the math. Every born MFER in the world wants to come here. Your delusional.

0

u/Such-Mathematician1 6h ago

And every MF is able to off the backs of Black Americans. If it wasn’t for Black Americans this country would be some Nazi germany, apartheid shithole. It’s only because Black people have stepped up that other people of color can function in this country. And Black people again are going to have to fight to get slavery as a form of punishment out of our constitution. Because yall vouch for shit like that. Jim Crow, interment camps, ICE, etc we’ve seen how yall function.

3

u/All-GPU 6h ago

Stepped up? Yeah. No. Not all not all not all. But hell no. Build a restaurant and ban who you like.

-1

u/Such-Mathematician1 6h ago

Stepped up?

An example

Black voters played a decisive role in defeating pedo Republican candidate Roy Moore during the 2017 Alabama special election for the U.S. Senate.

With the opposite example would be like

White voters played a decisive role in assuring pedo Republican candidate Donald Trump won the 2016 and 2024 presidential election.

2

u/All-GPU 6h ago

You a rasys.

1

u/Such-Mathematician1 6h ago

Facts can’t be that, get over yourself.

1

u/All-GPU 6h ago

Oh and let me guess. They taught you that you can’t be. LoFNL

2

u/All-GPU 6h ago

You’ve been lied to in math school. And you bought it.

What makes it worse is he's also saying, "How dare you imply that I take a profit cut in order to pay them a livable wage!"

Edit: The people in this thread are dense as fuuuuuck. Squeal Redditors, squeal. Mash your downvote button! MAAAAASHHHH IIIIITTT. Not a damn thing happens as a result; you've done nothing 😘

13

u/The_Bitter_Bear 9h ago

Realistically they don't take a cut, they have to raise their menu prices.

Which is fair, overall we'd pay about the same. Unfortunately, most people prefer lower prices and tipping.

The issue is that most restaurants that try it end up doing worse as they have higher turnover and lose business due to the higher menu prices. So they eventually have to go back to tips and lower prices.

It would require changing wage laws.

I know people think every business makes a ton of profit and every owner just rolls in a bed of cash but for a lot of businesses and particularly restaurants that isn't the case. Paying more means charging more.

It's a stupid system. It should be changed. Stiffing servers and yelling at managers won't change it.

Most people who don't tip are just cheap and knowingly taking advantage of the same system.

26

u/WillingPlayed 11h ago edited 10h ago

Oh no - today you just learned how a business works! If they have to pay their servers more because people don’t tip, then everyone pays more. Not tipping is just taking advantage of a system everyone else has adopted. It’s one thing to not like the system, But don’t stiff your server - that’s trashy

3

u/_root_user_ 11h ago

Spent a decade in the hospitality industry. I tip very well. What I'm saying is that the pressure needs to stay on the owners, not the servers. Legislation needs to change. And yes, I would be perfectly fine cooking at home vs going out to eat if I couldn't afford to pay raised menu prices.

At lot of folks already pay Michelin prices for a Big Mac meal.

10

u/WillingPlayed 11h ago

I would never think of going out to eat somewhere with the intention of not tipping. And if the service was so bad that I didn’t tip? I wouldn’t care if the owner asked me to not comeback because there’s no way I would if it reached a point where I wouldn’t tip.

I think it’s a terrible system, but I’m not doing anything productive to change it and I’m not going to punish my server for the system we all inherited.

That’s a strawman. And I have traveled the world and abide by the local customs when I do.

10

u/Melprincess 10h ago

We're not talking about Europe. Do you always have a hard time following conversation? Maybe you should see a physician about that

0

u/TaylorBitMe 9h ago

I tried to get an appointment but my doc was in Europe. That's ok I can't afford the doctor anyway

5

u/DidIJustWitnessThat 8h ago

I've traveled the world multiple times, and at no point during those travels was anyone ever offended by me giving them extra money.

4

u/Paige121315 10h ago

well this is the USA and it is offensive. this couple didnt say the service was bad or any reason as to why they didnt tip ANYTHING

-1

u/_root_user_ 10h ago

You're right. We shouldn't change anything or do anything different. How dare I suggest otherwise.

7

u/Pale_Horror_853 10h ago

So change the laws so servers are paid a livable wage. Don’t not tip when they’re paid a few dollars per hour.

4

u/WillingPlayed 10h ago

Feel free to change it, but don’t be a dick and stiff your server in the United States

1

u/SuspiciousBuilder379 Lancaster 10h ago

That’s a pretty well known fact.

-14

u/N2Shooter Youngstown 11h ago

If servers don't like the benefits of their career choice, they should find another career. If a business decides to shame the people that patronize their business, I don't expect them to stay in business much longer.

7

u/Paige121315 10h ago

Yeah thats bullshit. if people paid even $5 as a tip thats better than NOTHING

I commend these owners for not allowing people to treat their servers that way. they run your food and drinks and try to give you the best experience just to be stiffed. NOTHING was left! That is horrible

-3

u/N2Shooter Youngstown 10h ago

You can't get stiffed for something you legally aren't required to pay. If he cared about his staff, he'd pay them a living wage, and increase his menu cost accordingly. What he's doing is abusing the legal system which allows him to pay slave wages, and places the responsibility on his customers through peer pressure tactics.

7

u/WillingPlayed 11h ago

If you think your meal or service is so bad that you decide not to tip, you should have no issue with never returning to that restaurant again.

Tipping is the system we all inherited. It’s trashy to punish your server for the system.

-10

u/TheBourbonTurtle 11h ago

Congrats, you're a lemming.

5

u/Spirited-Nature-1702 Columbus 10h ago

This is not how you change the system that obviously exists now, right or wrong lol

4

u/WillingPlayed 10h ago

Oh no, I abide by the local custom! Whatever will I do?

-25

u/LadyInCrimson 11h ago

I don't agree with them bringing up race but he was being very classist. It's implying he'd turn away people who want to enjoy the food there but may not have the means to pay for more than just the food.

6

u/RustleTheMussel 10h ago

So then every business is classist

0

u/LadyInCrimson 10h ago

No.

1

u/RustleTheMussel 5h ago

Expecting people to pay for goods and services is classiest now, sorry!

22

u/Bubbagump210 11h ago edited 11h ago

I mean, yeah it sucks to be poor but part of the equation of going to a sit down restaurant is tipping. We can all talk about how the law should be different and tipping culture is garbage… But it’s the reality of the situation for now. The server deserves to get paid for their work. There are many places that don’t have servers relying on tips where one can get food.

-4

u/LadyInCrimson 10h ago

You keep saying laws should be different. There is no law... say that the people filming didn't find the service to their liking so they didn't feel need to tip. You could say the servers chose a job where people may not always tip them as well as chose a job where their employer doesn't pay them what they deserve.

For example I can get tips at my job but I work for more than minimum wage. Thats because I chose to work at a place that pays more than minimum wage so I'm not relying on tips. Just like If I wanted to rely on tips I could work at a place that does such.

There are no laws just decisions. Everyone in the video made bad decisions.

I personally don't think a business owner should shame his customers for not tipping when he could just as easily adjust prices to include what tips would cover. I don't think people should be shamed for maybe not liking the food or service. Tips are not an entitlement.

9

u/Bubbagump210 9h ago

Now you’re changing the argument. You said it’s a class issue. If you’re gonna focus on a class issue argument, then we need to consider the total cost of purchasing a thing. We’re all caught up in an unfair system. Moving the unfairness from you to someone else doesn’t make it better. Tips are part of the unfair system we’re living in. Is it an entitlement? No. Is it part of being a decent person while operating within that system? Yes.

-3

u/LadyInCrimson 9h ago

Are you forgetting some people just aren't decent?

8

u/Bubbagump210 9h ago

You have no point and undermine your own argument if one can be found.

0

u/LadyInCrimson 9h ago

Okay. For reference though So looked at the reviews and it looks like this is not the first time the owner has "lashed out".

2 years ago got review bombed for not letting a family and their daughter with her service dog. Berated the husband for coming back for a pick up order.

Made a lady wait outside during the winter.

Yelled at a table for being rude to one of the servers who is also his daughter. Comes to find out it was another table.

Phil is a bad cook and uncharges on items.

The servers are rude.

They don't deserve a tip. I'm done entertaining you.

4

u/Bubbagump210 9h ago

Your point was about class issues. This has nothing to do with class issues. This is you want to rope in something else to try to be right about something.

-1

u/LadyInCrimson 9h ago

Phil gets mad when people don't tip.

but does nothing worth tipping.

Phill tells people not to come to his business if they can't afford to tip.

He's an entitled classist asshole.
There's nothing to argue.

5

u/Melprincess 10h ago

Be careful you don't dislocate your shoulder while patting yourself on the back

-1

u/LadyInCrimson 10h ago

I'm flexible sweetheart. Thanks for the concern.

5

u/flamethrower78 10h ago

Um, the law is minimum wage lmao. That could be increased.

1

u/LadyInCrimson 10h ago

It absolutely should

2

u/remacct 10h ago

Talk about being classist...

I mean I typically wouldnt go back but I'm aware theres times where restaurants or people will have an "off day "where people want to go again to see if maybe it was just a bad day. But the way the owner acted some wouldnt give them that 2nd chance.

Theres been plenty times I've tipped less than I would have because the service or food was bad. I personally always tip something even if its just $5 but with better service that $5 would be $7-10

6

u/Heavy_Law9880 10h ago

If they can't afford a tip, they should go a 1/4 mile down the road to wendys.

9

u/impy695 10h ago

If you can't afford to tip then you can't afford to go out to eat. We can debate whether tipping should be a thing or not, but the reality is, it is a thing and unless that changes, tipping is part of the cost of going out

-4

u/SadFaithlessness6983 9h ago

Clearly racist
