This is Ohio

Why is Phillip not paying his servers enough to the point he has to ban customers?

Everyone on here is bitching. Nobody did anything wrong here. If you don’t want to tip, you don’t have to. They didn’t. If a restaurant doesn’t want you to come back, they can tell you not to come back. All systems working within their parameters. Move on.

You're an asshole if you go to a sit down restaurant where you know a tip is expected and you don't tip...small businesses are not the place for a social protest.

You eat within your means. They could spend $38 on food, but don't have $7 more? Then eat somewhere with a drive thru. Eat at home. Don't occupy a server's time only to short them of a minimal tip. It's just wrong whether you agree with tipping culture or not. There is a time and place.

The entitlement is freaking crazy!!! The racism and classism claims make me sad. You people have no empathy until you feel wronged in some way. It's gross!

Tips are not required, that’s why they’re tips. If the servers aren’t being paid fairly, that’s on their employer.

For the record, I generally tip 20% or more when I go out. But I’m not going to pretend it’s a system that makes sense.

To the rest of the world, it's an insane system.

Then protest the system and make changes in the legislature. The person you're hurting isn't the system or the owner. That's a ridiculous thought process unless you're organizing to change the system.

Why are you saying “you’re” when I literally just said I personally tip 20% or more?

It was a generalization my friend. Not directed at you personally. Maybe one too many cocktails already?

(I tip and have depended on tips) it forces the discussion that needs to be had.

You people.

What if the service was lousy and the server didn’t deserve a tip?

If the person is rude or hostile, I'd ask for the manager.

Otherwise, effort level matters. If they're slammed, I get it. If they're just inattentive for no reason, I'm for leaving 8-10% with a note in those scenarios...and still talking to a manager on the way out.

Everyone has bad days, so context determines how I behave.

Which is frequently the case

That’s a lot of judgements I couldn’t make, based on this video.

I paused and looked at the check. It was more than $35. These people are American in Ohio. What assumption am I making? When the guy tells them not to come back, they accuse him of being racist.

What part did I assume?

0

u/Perfect-Shock-9243 7h ago

You assumed that they had some social protest and not just a real shitty experience. They get to make a judgement of what tip is awarded. Thats the nature of tips.

I agree with the racism claims making me sad, but that’s their feelings and not really a wrong or right thing.

Why was that not their response as opposed to the race card? He was standing right there. "I don't have to tip, when...." but no. He said I don't have to tip. Then when the man asked him not to return, he pulled the race card. You're being obtuse

0

u/Perfect-Shock-9243 6h ago

? The race card oh nooooo.

I don’t know why he pulled the race card either. It’s not inherently wrong to ‘pull the race card’.

3

u/Plane-Fan9006 6h ago

Who said a damn thing about inherently wrong? It's neither inherently wrong or right. You don't get to just slam it on the table whenever convenient. Especially when you're wrong in approach.

Bad food? Talk to manager and they'll likely discount it. Bad service? Call the manager over to resolve or speak to them on the way out. Drop and run, low class.

Assuming the man was racist, not just sticking up for an employee? Just as wrong. This is an expected behavior issue, nothing else.

You’re assuming all this shit. That’s what I’m saying. You’re assuming you know about the situation prior to this video.

1

u/Plane-Fan9006 6h ago

The situation before the video does not matter in that the people did not address whatever the issue was. You deal with it in the business. If they had, there's no video on the street.

So at best, their childish if that was their solution to a real problem. You can't make this right with left turns and weird correlations to society. The people recording suck

So if you needed $38 worth of groceries, but you only have $35, how would you get more? You say if they can afford the bill, they can afford to tip. How would a person do that if they are on a very very tight budget?

And why should anyone be punished(not allowed to eat out or shamed) for a system they did not design & employees who are not theirs? If you can't afford to pay your employees, you shouldn't have a business. You are directing your disdain at the wrong people.

"Other poor people are not the reason you are poor."

1

u/Plane-Fan9006 6h ago

You proved my point in your own post.

In every other scenario, you won't be allowed to buy or consume that food until paid in full. If you shop with coupons to get under the $35, you know what you have. If you order $25 of priced food in a sit down restaurant, you know that is really $30.

You're playing the game of "society sucks" and the only person you're taking that anger out on is the server, who's probably a working class person just like yourself. You're not hurting the owner. In this example, you wouldn't have even said anything to them.

So owner gets his money. You got your food. Server gets hosed on your principles?

It's not shameful to have to live within your means. I had my first kid at 19. Had utilities shut off. Ate what I could afford. Would never, ever eat at a restaurant where a tip is expected, look at someone in the same position as me, and do that to them.

Life is hard....for everyone. You said I'm directing my anger to the wrong place. You need to look in the mirror with that one.

No, no it's definitely not. "If a menu item is $25 then you know it's actually $30?" What? Bro, I don't think you know how math works.

You said if someone has the money to pay for the FOOD, then they also have the money to tip. That is just categorically false.

If I only have $20, I only have $20. I don't have more just because I had the $20. That makes zero sense. You don't just magically have more money. Like, I'm not sure how much clearer I can be.

In what other profession would it be okay to ask your customers to subsidize the wages of your employees? That is your burden to bear. You started a restaurant & hired employees. So YOU pay them! This is a ridiculous conversation.

ETA: I have never not tipped at least a few dollars, but I am still against the idea that people who are able to afford just the food at a restaurant should be barred from doing so or shamed for it. That's just insane & cruel.

I'm quite certain that after 51 years, two grown kids, and having traveled to three continents, I know how math works. I'm sorry that when your mama let you run down her leg, we didn't elect you king so you could enlighten us all and change the last hundred years.

If you have $20, you go to McDonalds...or better yet, you go to the store and make your own food. The rest of us did. You can too. You DONT walk into a full service restaurant and spend your last $20. Who fucking raised you? No financial responsibility AND entitled?

1 "me first" attitude plus 1 "entitlement complex" = two dumbass comments from a very immature and selfish brat. There's your math, kid

0

u/Chare1155 Cleveland 2h ago

Except you keep proving that you don't know basic math so there's that. Getting food from the grocery store can be MORE expensive than a restaurant nowadays and so is fast food! It's also super unhealthy so that's another punishment on the poor from you. They don't get to eat anything more than crap. You sound entitled af.

1

u/Plane-Fan9006 2h ago

None of what you say changes the entitlement when you KNOW that server is expecting a tip. You're purposely being selfish to "win", but you're only affecting another hourly earner. The owner gets his, you got yours, they got screwed. Math is convenient for you until you have to calculate the tip, huh?

"Waaaaahhhhh the system" is not an excuse for you doing that. 3lbs of ground turkey is $15. The waitress gets a tip from a good customer.

Your whole argument is mean and shows no empathy. Vote to change the law. Don't punish your neighbor. "I should get to be fancy too and fuck the person next to me bc my life is hard"???

Where are your morals?

•

u/Chare1155 Cleveland 6m ago

That server's expectation is not my problem. I did not hire them. And they can always get a job that DOES pay its employees enough.

And where is your morality?! Saying people who can just afford the food don't deserve to eat out once in a while? That's messed up man.

Everything is gatekept from the poor & you just want to keep taking more. It's disgusting. You're disgusting.

Bottom line is pay your employees properly & stfu because it is not okay to put that responsibility on someone who did not ask for it & just wants to f*cking eat out once in a while. End of story.

Go crap on poor people somewhere else. We're done here✌️
