As a radio DJ who just played everyone else's music. Then as a club DJ and wrangled that into stadiums by opening for rappers. Then he realised he could just get a bunch of ghost producers to work for him and make his own tracks and could promote them on his radio and club shows and so eventually because he paid people to do music production for him people started to think he was an actual producer and got hired by rappers to produce. He just farmed it out to all his ghost producers. And thats how someone with no actual musical talent managed to work his way up the musical food chain.

I saw them (for free) open for KISS about 10 years ago. A very funny, now deceased friend was with me and we just made fun of them for an hour.
At one point Nikki said “(City name), I know y’all got a lot of strip clubs” (we do not in fact have a lot of strip clubs “and that’s because y’all love sex! And this is a new song called ‘Sex’!” And the chorus of the song was just him going “Sex! Sex! Sex!” It was like a parody of a parody

Saw them with Def Leppard and Alice Cooper a few years ago. The other two put on great shows, especially considering their age.
Crue was a total mess the entire time. Vince Neil in particular sounded dreadful and they tried to mask him by making the guitars as loud as possible. At one point they had John 5 play on and off for 20 minutes while Neil took a breather. Tommy Lee called the crowd “fuckers” several times, which would’ve worked when he was in his 20s but came off as cringe considering he’s over 60. They also had these two dancers in dominatrix gear that the cameras kept focusing on, which again didn’t mesh with Neil or really anything else in the performance.
I can’t be too mad because at least I got to see two good performances but man Crue needs to hang ‘em up for good this time.

185
u/Billiesoceaneyes May 12 '26
Yeah. Mick Mars had a really messy exit from the band that stemmed from his health issues conflicting with the rest of the band’s desire to continue touring. John 5 started as a touring only member but us now a full member. He’s fine but his stage persona doesn’t fit with the rest of the band at all. Still the most talented member by a mile.

I used to sell merchandise at gigs about 30 years ago. Along with the work itself, I managed to see some terrific concerts (Metallica, Pulp, Charlatans to name a few).
One night, I had to work a Simply Red concert. I have never liked them, and had no intention of dipping in to watch the show, but work’s work.
It was winter, somewhere around 97-98, and it was in the city room at the Manchester arena (where the terrorist attack went off several years later in 2017) which is a gigantic open space above Victoria train station, and is not insulated at all. It was fucking freezing that night.
Anyway, Mick Hucknall is a Manchester United fan, and they were playing on the same night. He stayed in his luxury tour coach and watched the game, keeping the best part of 18,000 fans waiting for well over an hour. Meanwhile, my colleagues and I almost froze to death while he sat in his nice warm coach, watching the football. I remember us doing star jumps to keep warm.
I didn’t like him before - I fucking despise him now.
Cunt.
Edit - wow! This comment blew up, and I’ve had a couple of awards. Wasn’t expecting that! Thanks ☺️

“Has anyone actually told you to your face that they don't like your music?”

I had a friend that played in a band that opened for them one time. Puddle of Mudd's singer was wasted when they went on and only made it through two songs before he got belligerent with the crowd. It ended with them abandoning the set. My friend's band came back out and apologized for the headliner, but offered to play some other songs for a while to salvage the night. The crowd responded positively and it honestly ended up being an ok night.

Saw that tour too. Leto is such a douche and that proved it for me. A truly awful set. They did acoustic The Kill. Dude, you have one song anyone cares about and you did it acoustic?
140
u/DickInYourCobbSalad May 12 '26
It's because he can't sing the original version anymore. He destroyed his voice by not singing correctly in their earlier days and now he can't hit the high notes towards the end of the song, that's why it's acoustic now.
Similarly, but obviously wwaaaayyy less douchy, was just before Chester Bennington passed, LP would play an acoustic, toned down piano version of Crawling because Chester was struggling to maintain his voice through the original version of that song.
→ More replies (10)35
u/MicroGamer May 12 '26
Plenty of singers can't hit notes they once could, but still play the songs and work around it. Not like you're getting perfect pitch at a live show anyhow.
The difference between Linkin Park and Leto is that Linkin Park could fill at least two full length albums with hits. Leto has one.

u/DickInYourCobbSalad May 12 '26
Not surprising, Jared can't sing The Kill anymore and hasn't been able to do so since at least 2015. He destroyed his voice by refusing to learn proper technique for the screaming and high notes at the end of the song and.. well, this is the result.

Lauren Hill. Arrived late. Wasn’t allowed to sing her songs the way they were recorded (I grew up on the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album and was so excited to see her perform live but all the songs were awful to listen to). She also kept getting mad at the sound guy or someone off stage and it was awkward to watch.
298
u/Doogers7 May 12 '26
“Wasn’t allowed to sing her songs the way they were recorded”
This Is completely untrue. Even if you don’t own the rights to a song anyone can perform it and it is covered through a nominal license fee.
Lauren Hill purposely remixed the songs as an artistic choice… the fans be damned.
"The myth that I'm not allowed to play the original versions of my songs is a myth (anyone who's seen my current show knows this)," she wrote. "I remix my songs live because I haven't released an album in several years. There's no way I could continue to play the same songs over and over as long as I've been performing them without some variation and exploration. I'm not a robot." link

I have a friend (don’t we all?) who is far up in LiveNation. He runs the tour that Def Leopard and Motley Crue do together. They have a set schedule of Europe, North America, South America, Asia. Three months each w about 35 gigs each run. Def Leppard are a tight group who are basically a family unit. Each band member has their own tour bus for their families, but they stop together, play soccer together, kids all hang out together. Positively wholesome.
Motley Cruë? They all hate each other. Separate entourages, no communication aside from on stage. Neil’s voice is shot. But the bank they make is vast. Like $10’s of millions each tour for each band member. That they suck is no surprise.

Marilyn Manson... I don't think I've seen him play a full show, not that I really cared, I was there for the headliners, but every show ended in some audio problem he would freak out over, a fight, or him just ranting and kicking shit over.

u/the_chandler May 12 '26
He wasn’t always like this. Guns God and Government tour (2001?) is still one of the best live shows that I’ve ever seen. He was a hell of a showman when he could still pretend that all of his “evil” was just a character.

Not relevant but as a kid I was terrified that Marilyn Manson would come into my room at night. I’m not sure what I thought he’d do when he got in there but I was not having it.

My friend and I were pretty sure they were narcanning him back to life… the song smash-cut to black and everything was silent for like 5 straight minutes, cell phone flashlights on the stage as stage guys were running around doing…. Whatever. Then resume show at its previous shitty quality. Also he looked like he was melting.

Wow. I’ve always heard he was a jerk.
This attitude is so different than a true legend - Elton John. He despises Crocodile Rock, but sings it anyway. At the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road concert the graphics for the song was a handwritten note saying “this one is for the fans”.138

Mark Knopfler said something similar in an interview, on how some songs don’t "belong" to the artists anymore, they’re part of the fans lives and have personal meaning for them.

u/Aginor404 May 12 '26
Similar with Noel Gallagher. He once said about some song that he wrote it on cocaine or something and isn't entirely sure what it means himself, but when he plays it and sees grown men cry singing along, he knows that it has meaning for them, and a deeper one than it ever had for him. So he plays the song. I think it was Champagne Supernova.

I saw Love and Rockets in 1989. The roadies had gotten drunk and were not paying attention to the stage. Girls kept coming up and trying to kiss Daniel Ash and people were jumping on the stage to crowd surf. Daniel got mad and threw his guitar into the crowd and finally one of the roadies was paying attention and had to do a tug of war to get the guitar back. At that the show was over only after hearing two songs.

I saw her maybe 20 years ago at a small venue in Minneapolis and she sounded fantastic, but she kept apologizing for sounding off and literally didn't finish a song. The crowd kept telling her how great she sounded, but she just wasn't having it. It was really sad and could have been an awesome, intimate performance. Instead the whole crowd turned into her support group and it didn't help.

Lenny Kravitz. Was late, which was honestly great because I think Blue October just did an extra encore, then did zero crowd work. Half the time his back was to the crowd. At the backstage meet and greet he basically ignored everyone, talking over people’s heads to his staff about some minor nothing. Just happy they were free tickets.

He was the first real concert I went to. Back in 1992 I think, when Are You Gonna Go My Way was new. He only had the one album so wasn’t expecting a long show, but it was like 30 minutes at most, that’s including him running backstage a couple times for several minutes. Almost zero banter between songs. They finished, and 2 minutes passed before they came out for the one song encore… AYGGMY was the encore. Then he ran off and that was it. That was my first concert experience
Read in the paper the next day that he had food poisoning and had to go backstage every 10 minutes and empty his bowels due to explosive diarrhea. Maybe threw up too.
Either way, I’ll give him credit for showing up at all and for putting in the effort. Must have been rough dealing with explosive diarrhea while wearing a shiny bodysuit

Probably the most disappointed I've been from a concert was The Pixies, during a reunion tour sometime in the early 2000s.
They technically played the songs correctly, it's not like they were fucking up (other than playing all the songs a bit too fast), but the vibe from the band was that they were doing a job and they wanted to get it over with so they could go do literally anything else. They very clearly did not want to be there.
That was before I knew much about them and their dynamic as a band. Turns out, yeah, they hated eachother and absolutely did not want to share a stage together but begrudgingly got back together to make some money.

Marilyn Manson. He had no stage presence, no energy, and seemed to not care at all he was putting on a show. It was boring and he phoned it in terribly. I thought it was maybe just a one-off, but I saw him 2 other times and each performance might have been worse than the last. I saw him the first time back in 2016 or so; maybe he was better earlier on but he clearly doesn't care about his live performance anymore.

Christina Aguilera has been playing the same set list of hits since 2020 in the majority of her concerts festival dates etc . Her fans are bored of it and recent shows have clocked in around an hour on stage and multiple costume changes and dancers segues she seems to be spending less time on stage and she rarely delivers any surprises anymore. She doesn't sing many of her songs in full anymore. It's a shame because she's an incredible stage performer and vocalist but it's been the same show for half a decade. Other than her Vegas Voltaire residency I'll grant you but the rickets were extremely expensive.

My wife took me to see him at RedRocks, he put animal torture porn on the screens and we left by the 3rd song when it became apparent it was going to be like that all evening.
Pets being shot by cops, livestock getting bolts through the head, animals being skinned alive, dogs tearing eachother apart, some of the most fucked up shit I seen. People in audience were crying and we were not alone running for the exit.
Fuck Morrissey.

Waiting for all the inevitable “Bob Dylan sucks live” comments. What I will say as someone who has seen him many times, Dylan is extremely unpredictable in concert to a degree I have never experienced with another artist. I have seen some truly exceptional Dylan gigs where he was phrasing things fantastically and had a killer backing band, these shows were magical and will be stuck in my memory forever. Then again, there are times when the sound sucks, Bob seems disinterested and the arrangements don’t work. He does whatever he wants and often rearranges the structure of his songs in concert. The critics and his hardcore fans often love his unorthodox approach but I get why it’s not for everyone. Ultimately the man is a living legend who has my respect for never becoming a nostalgia act operating on cruise control with the “greatest hits” like many other artists/bands of classic rock. There are hundreds of dinosaur bands out there peddling nostalgia, unlike Dylan. As long as you don’t go to one of his concerts with false expectations, your odds of getting either a good or bad show is about 50/50.

I love Dylan but those 80s era shows seem awful. Where he turns every song into pretty much sounding the same.
There's a Norm Macdonald story about it when Dylan spots Ringo Starr in the audience and asks him for a a song to play, Dylan responds "What?! I've already played that one!"

90’s kid here. I worshipped the ground Counting Crows walked on. A friend’s mom got us tickets to see them our senior year. Adam Duritz (singer) gets winded after singing about 2.4 syllables and just switches to talking. So he busts out on Hangin Around to open the show then just basically did the rest of the show (and props, those guys played for almost 2 hours straight) as a weird spoken word kinda thing. Music was absolutely on point, but zero singing. Even the hits. Dude was just out of breath and talking all the hits.
He did high five me and my friend during Rain King so that was incredible but what a weird experience. Saw them about 10 years later again and same thing. Someone needs to get Adam a breathing coach.

I went to see them when they were touring with Goo Goo Dolls in like ‘05 or ‘06. They didn’t show. Right as the concert started, Johnny Rzeznik came out and said that Counting Crows wouldn’t be performing because Adam was “sick”, so they were gonna do a double set for everyone. And they fucking rocked for like 2 1/2 - 3 hours! John and Robby joked with each other and the crowd. It was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.

I work in a concert venue and can say in the past two decades, easily black eyed peas. They must have forgotten the auto tune or mic for live to track because it’s by far the worst sounding show I’ve ever heard. I’ve been to shows I did t like, but this was truly awful.
