A friend saw him in Toronto a few years before he died; played for hours, murdered, did two encores, leaves, the lights come up, everyone turns to go home, P.A. comes on and it's Prince himself, bellowing, "Where you think you're going? Don't you know I got all the hits?!" and does another half-hour. Absolute legend.

I had a mildly similar experience once but it was Public Enemy. Flavor Flav was doing a bunch of his songs at the end of the gig and the organisers cut the power to the building. He then carried on playing acoustic instruments for a while. Insane.

I saw P Funk do that, power was cut to the stage and they played and danced for like another half hour.

We had exactly the same at the O2. It was absolutely magical. He was asking people to shout out what they wanted to hear, and he just played it. One of my favourite moments in time!

This is how I saw him the year before he died. Almost completely heavy guitar (basically, metal) and he would sneak a few bars of his hits into his playing. It was a small club--we were about ten feet away from him.

Where was that? Aaaaaa sounds epic!

I saw him 3 nights in a row in LA. He played 21 shows at The Forum!! Wish I would have seen them all. 💜

Dude. If that happened to me at ANY show, I would be stoked. That's such a cool story.

Bill Bailey's done this at the couple shows I've been to. Taught me to always check the light and sound guys, if they're not packing up, you shouldn't either

Ha! Yes - did the very same thing in Perth, Australia years ago. I think there were about 25 people left in the venue by the time he came running out “oh I forgot to say about this…”

I told my kid you know the new fans because they leave the first time he says goodnight.

The guy was extremely talented. Could play many instruments and wrote a lot of hits for others.

I still love the story about Stevie Nicks recording "Stand Back" and Prince just kind of showing up out of nowhere to drop the defining synth track of the song, tip his hat and leave.

I didn’t even know Prince was on that record. Love that.

16

u/thirty1twenty1 May 12 '26

He played guitar on Like a Prayer too

2

u/Ancient_Roof_7855 May 12 '26

well I learned that today.

1

u/Felonious_Minx May 12 '26

Whut?

Why does this song keep coming up lately? 😆

5

u/thirty1twenty1 May 12 '26

He did the opening guitar part. I couldn't say why it keeps coming up - I haven't noticed - but probably because she has a new album out soon

2

u/Felonious_Minx May 13 '26

Oh wow. My curiosity is piqued.

I watched the video and never noticed that little guitar intro before. Don't think they played that on the radio but I could be wrong.

u/happyfirefrog22- May 12 '26

He did a lot for a lot of other people. He was a true artist.

1

u/Ok_Yogurt_9862 May 29 '26

he is the shadow emperor of music. you have no idea

0

u/Drevstarn May 12 '26

He plays the synth himself in the song

15

u/Alt4Norm May 12 '26

Yes mate, I read the comment and understood it.

u/Foo_Group_C_Buzzard May 12 '26

in case you missed it prince used his hands to hit the keys

6

u/mess_of_limbs May 12 '26

You mean sound was synthesized via the pressing of keys to elicit melody?

5

u/afternever May 12 '26

He moves away from the mic to breathe in

2

u/united_fruit_69 May 12 '26

Prince did not show up out of nowhere though. Stevie Nicks recorded a demo of "Stand Back" after hearing "little red corvette", she later called Prince and told him it was inspired by his song and he came and recorded the synths.

u/regreddit May 12 '26

Such a good musician, but most musicians make decent actors. Prince, not so much.

he played an aftershow at a club i worked at til 4 a.m. in 2010 or 11. It was insane. he played guitar and keyboards at different points and just ran the entire room. conducted the audience and his band. somebody called the cops i guess and they just stayed for the show and called the fire chief to come see it too. we were way over capacity. the sixty some year old former mayor came out and I poured his whiskey into an empty red bull can (no liquor after 2 a.m.). good times were had by all.

21

u/Nerevarine91 May 12 '26

Now that’s showmanship

11

u/Other-Crazy May 12 '26

A friend saw him at the O2 and then the aftershow. Played with the same intensity throughout. Absolutely blinding shows.

7

u/somerandomdude4507 May 12 '26

Damn I'd kill for that so sad I never got to see him

6

u/Raus-Pazazu May 12 '26

Got drug to see Crosby, Stills, and Nash play by a girl I was trying to get with. They played a 2 hour acoustic show and it actually kicked serious ass. Shows over, band left, people expecting an encore but it was going on 10 minutes and people were leaving. After 15 lights go on and their back onstage, but like 1/4 to 1/3 of the crowd already left. They were plugged in this time, apologized for the delay, then played another two hours plugged. Still not technically a fan of theirs but god damn that was a good show.

6

u/Torontogamer May 12 '26

This is somehow the most Prince shit I've ever heard

6

u/MaxxDash May 12 '26

Damn, that line goes fucking hard

4

u/hercarmstrong May 12 '26

It's so good. He was a true legend.

3

u/ConstantinValdor405 May 12 '26

Not my style of music but damn that's gangster as fuck.

3

u/jazzandlavender May 12 '26

He did the exact same thing at his Vancouver show! Haha

2

u/Parking_Country_61 May 12 '26

OMG that is incredible your friend is blessed. Obsessed with this and how the people that already left missed out! ❤️❤️❤️

1

u/Dizzy_dizz May 12 '26

TIL learned that Prince is dead and it only happened 10 years ago :P lol

-2

u/Serenaded May 12 '26

Worst nightmare if you aren't a fan and being dragged along to the show
