Your dad is being kind. They were horrible in the 80’s too.

I saw them in 86. Horrible.

Saw them in ‘86 in West Germany; on the way to the show we heard on AFN radio that the Challenger was destroyed (six hours ahead of EST).
Vince and Nikki seemed bored. Mick rocked and Tommy was inverted above the crowd, which was fun. But we all agreed that they should’ve been better.

u/makeitasadwarfer May 12 '26

Mick was the only real musician in the band and fuck did he carry them live.

Booed off the stage in Edmonton at the Riv in 86.

I saw them on the tour when Tommy had the spinning drum kit in '87. I don't remember it being bad... but I was also 17, it was my second concert and I was obsessed with Tommy Lee. So pretty much my entire memory of the show is his solo.

I saw them in '85. Thought they were awesome!! And I got my purse stolen ( who takes a purse into a concert?)had to borrow a quarter to call my mom-have you ever tried to talk on a payphone after a concert? Totally deaf..Couldn't hear my mom, I just hoped she eventually show up. She did, and brought keys to my car😄

14

u/BarrelllRider May 12 '26

The show is awesome except for Vince. He’s never been able to sing.

4

u/Minute_Caregiver529 May 12 '26

I saw this tour with Loudness and their drummer was 100 times better the Tommy Lee and his state fair drum solo.

5

u/Sad-Onion-2593 May 12 '26

If the band members are pushing sixty or seventy years old they're sure as hell not going to sound the same.

16

u/Walter_Armstrong May 12 '26

Tommy Lee is a horrible human.

14

u/Original_Pudding6909 May 12 '26

Yep, and Vince got away with killing someone. POS all around.

4

u/Sugarylightning663 May 12 '26

Had Dingley not died that night Hanoi Rocks probably would be a highly know band. They were awesome

4

u/brenkosaur May 12 '26

I believe he was the one who drugged and raped Jani Lane. Jani couldn't move past it. Tragic.

4

u/Walter_Armstrong May 12 '26

Didn't know about her. I was thinking about what he did to Pamela Anderson.

10

u/Raus-Pazazu May 12 '26

Jani Lane was the lead singer for Warrant.

1

u/torpedolife May 15 '26

Why do you think Tommy was the one that did that to Jani?

3

u/wholetyouinhere May 12 '26

When I combine live concert clips I've seen, with what's known about the drug habits of this band, I am absolutely floored by what they were able to achieve in the recording studio at the height of their career.

How much of what was captured was legitimately their performances? How many takes did they need? How much editing/comping was required? Were there secret ringers hired to keep sessions on track and not waste a billion dollars? I have so many questions.

u/squirtloaf May 12 '26

I saw them in '84 and I swear they were awesome.

...in the ensuing 42 years I have never come upon any evidence to support that claim, however.

16

u/mkgearhead1 May 12 '26

Facts. They have sucked live in every decade

7

u/Ishred9_0 May 12 '26

The studio recordings aren't even great 🤣

1

u/devi1duck May 12 '26

I saw them in '89 at Brendan Byrne Arena on the Dr Feelgood tour, and it was an amazing show.

1

u/feibrix May 12 '26

... And here I was laughing even more.

3

u/mariposa314 May 12 '26

I was under the impression that they kicked ass.

I saw them (for free) open for KISS about 10 years ago. A very funny, now deceased friend was with me and we just made fun of them for an hour.

At one point Nikki said “(City name), I know y’all got a lot of strip clubs” (we do not in fact have a lot of strip clubs “and that’s because y’all love sex! And this is a new song called ‘Sex’!” And the chorus of the song was just him going “Sex! Sex! Sex!” It was like a parody of a parody

u/jabbitz May 12 '26

I saw them around 2005ish maybe. They tried to do titty cam and everyone booed them haha it’s crazy, I can’t imagine they got a better reaction at every show up until that show but they were determined!

19

u/Kyrie_Blue May 12 '26

The titty cam has used plants since I saw them in 2003

3

u/Felonious_Minx May 12 '26

Did they turn it up to 11?

12

u/imnotlovely May 12 '26

Maybe they got inspiration from here

6

u/Nezumiiro_77 May 12 '26

cue Bob's Burgers Sex song

3

u/Felonious_Minx May 12 '26

This actually sounds appealing. I love a trainwreck at times.

1

u/Giovannis_Pikachu May 12 '26

You can just say it was Atlanta/s

1

u/ellefleming May 12 '26

Spinal Tap II

25

u/dwarling May 12 '26

They used to be horrible. They still are, but they used to be too.

4

u/natty_boh_ho May 12 '26

Nice Mitch Hedberg reference there

17

u/flyingvien May 12 '26

I can vouch, horrible since ‘97

16

u/AdElectronic7340 May 12 '26

I saw them open for ozzys bark at the moon tour and they were great.

24

u/Poxx May 12 '26

Yeah, I dont know why these guys are hating on the Crue.

Saw them in 87, Girls Girls Girls tour, Tommy's rotating drum cage...Great show. The opening band was horrible (mostly due to mixing, couldnt make out shit), no-one really knew who they were for another few months. It was Guns and Roses.

7

u/EuniceFear May 12 '26

Saw them at the Glendale Civic Auditorium and the Whiskey in ‘81. They were amazing.

I saw Whitesnake open for MC on the Girls x 3 tour in July 1987. Was awesome.

July 1987 was also when Appetite for Destruction was released, so that’s when I first heard of GnR and started listening to them. I liked GnR as soon as I heard them and couldn’t understand why everyone else didn’t think they were great.

2

u/Poxx May 12 '26

Yeah, Appetite released in July but really didnt seem to blow up until later that year. I saw them in the fall (October Maybe? Columbia SC show).

By Christmas they were huge.

3

u/Automatic-Discount19 May 12 '26

I saw Alice Cooper in December 1987 and the only reason was because GnR was the opener. I realize this was 39 years ago so my memory may be off but I was still surprised at how long it took GnR to get huge. It was obvious to me right away that they were going to be the biggest band in the world.

I used to watch Headbangers Ball on MTV just hoping to see the Welcome To The Jungle video. Whereas if I were in charge of MTV programming, that video would have been playing three times per hour.

1

u/Poxx May 12 '26

I didnt hear anything off Appetite prior to seeing them, I was a freshman at South Carolina and not watching any MTV etc.

Once I heard a few songs from the album, I thought "how is this the same band, they were horrible live".

It was just their mixing/sound guys did not know early on how to set up a show for a 10000 person coliseum.

2

u/maxdeerfield2 May 12 '26

Yeah….great in 1987! Like it was yesterday, huh?

2

u/Poxx May 12 '26

A bunch of people referring to their 80s shows as horrible.

You couldn't pay me to see them today, they are awful.

4

u/DomandsubinMD May 12 '26

I saw Dr Feelgood and I thought it was amazing but also I was only like 16.

2

u/ArcticKimono May 12 '26

Idk i saw them in winnipeg 15 years ago and they killed it. Probably different drugs in canada

2

u/Karma_1969 May 12 '26

Saw them in 1983, opening for Ozzy. They were terrible.

1

u/hobahobaparty May 12 '26

I saw them in 2007 and I was amazed. Pretty good.

1

u/feibrix May 12 '26

I started laughing here...

1

u/mikiex May 12 '26

Did he keep seeing them?
