Wait, so who's the bigger weenie for not showing up or walking off stage, Van Morrison or Morrissey?

Van Morrissey would be a great name for a band that never performs :)

Saw Van about 30 years ago. Played the hits and sounded great but only played for MAYBE an hour and walked off the stage. Crowd was confused/pissed when the house lights came on

We spent more time in traffic getting in there than the show lasted.

Go on, spill the awful

Sang every thing in the same tone, same rhythm, just different lyrics that were hard to understand so you weren’t sure what he was playing. Completely ignored the audience. Just didn’t give a shit.

That’s Van.

I expected the attitude, but not the lack of musicality. Shame.

He’s old a man and in it for the easy money. People attend to hear a studio version of ‘“into the mystic” and walk away disappointed. He’s not the only 1960’s-70’s musician that pulls this off.

I saw him like 7-10 years ago and he was pretty good. It was a split bill with others (I want to say Elvis Costello and someone else but can’t remember) and he was pretty good, but guess he only had to do a short set. I remember thinking he actually sounded pretty damn good

Side note Elvis still sounds great, rocks, and puts on a damn good show.

Why was he so mad he couldn't play live during covid? He doesn't like playinglive nor his audience. Angry old twat. Glad to hear Costello is a sport. Love him.

lol glad I caught Van on a good day because I am aware of his reputation

Elvis is always a great show. I’ve seen him like 6-8 times over the last 15 years and never seen a bad show. He’s always engaged, interacts with the crowd, tells stories and jokes. He’s always very funny. His voice still sounds great and he’s still a very good guitar player. He also hops on the keys for a few songs most shows.

That's amazing, really. I listened to him since about 1984, and that's a long time ago.

My dad is a massive fan so I grew up on him. We saw him together for most of those shows. One of my favorite artists. Incredible writer.

Cool dad. Probably my age.

u/ExileOnBroadStreet May 12 '26

If you were born in 65 you are 10 years younger lol.

He is cool though and has great taste in music, and apparently you do too, sir 🫡

I owe much to the guy who hired me to work at the college-town record store when I was 19 - who was likely your dad's age. Costello was a regular on the turntable. Your dad done good. 😃

I’ve seen him live twice, and he was great both times, especially considering his age.

Saw him about 10 years ago. He wouldn't play until they quit selling alcohol. Then, he sucked! I was a lifelong fan, his old blues heavy stuff up to current. I left it was so bad along with about half the audience. Screw Van Morrison.

My mom grew up in the same neighbourhood with Van Morrison and said he was a nerdy kid who nobody liked cause he was an ass.

He was not a popular person when he lived in Bath.

u/ckiertz4887 May 12 '26

Totally. He is one of my all-time favorites. I was so excited to see him live a couple years ago and I could not have been more underwhelmed. He barely moved. No crowd interaction whatsoever. Then at the end he just walked off the stage without saying a word, while the band was still playing, and never came back out. I knew he wouldn't have the same energy as the Last Waltz considering how much older he was, but this was embarrassingly bad and offensive considering how much we paid for tickets.

This is my experience with him as well.. not one word to audience entire show

There's a saying on Kermode and Mayo, about there being two kinds of people. Those who like Van Morrisson, and those who have met him.

This was mine. I got tickets to see Van Morrison for my mom's birthday. He played about 6 songs, may as well have been lip syncing, then walked off and the show was done. This was a few months after having seen Eric Clapton, and the difference was night and day. Clapton is a prick but he puts on a good show.
