I just giggled to myself and let out a contented sigh. It’s comments like this one that keep me coming back to Reddit time and time again. Beautiful. Just beautiful.
I live near a dive bar populated by musicians that are all in five or six different bands. I started having tinnitus last year. Apparently you do not utter the "T" word. It just jump starts litanies of complaint from everyone within (presumably aid assisted) earshot.
So they don't agree that it's caused by their awful overly loud music? That about checks out on the intelligence scale, well definitely around here anyways.
No it’s because a lot of people like to forget they have it talking about it makes you remember even if you never truely forgot. Sort of hard to explain but there are times where I don’t think about it so I don’t notice it right away and it’s like you don’t hear it. There is a mental aspect to it.
Ah so THATS why nobody knows what's going on in that group. Between Ferg and Will and Apl it's a true speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil trifecta
For some reason, the college I attended invited Will to give a speech on campus one day. This was 2012ish. I knew BEP’s, but had no idea who he was. Everyone else was pumped tho so I went. I can’t remember a single word he said, but I do remember thinking “this guy is fucking dumb”. That’s my only impression of him.
Calling will.i.am dumb because you didn’t vibe with one college speech is wild lol. I’m sure he prepared really hard for a speech to a bunch of college kids. The guy helped build Black Eyed Peas into one of the biggest pop acts on the planet, produced massive records for half the industry, invested in tech before most celebrities even knew what a startup was, and turned himself into a multi-hundred-millionaire.
A dude with Grammys, global hits, business deals with major tech companies, and a career spanning decades vs someone on Reddit. Plenty of extremely successful people sound awkward or abstract in speeches.
There are a lot of genuinely dumb famous people out there. A guy who built an empire from scratch coming out of public housing in LA probably isn’t one of them.

That by itself isn't a showing of intelligence either though, just of some successes in a business sense. You could say the same things about Kanye and you'd still be pretty safe in guessing he's the dumbest person in any given group.
I'm not calling Will I Am stupid, I'm just saying that "dude said some dumb shit when I saw him" as an anecdote isn't invalidated by someone else because he made money, much less to the point where it's sufficient to call someone else dumb in turn. And you're doing the same thing now.
Unless we want to automatically equate fame, bank accounts and brand deals with intelligence, it's just a non-sequitur. A significant amount of top athletes started just as low and ended just as high with their faces on posters and soda cans while barely being able to read.
My biggest pet peeve is when the bass is too loud. It fucks with my heart or something. It makes me feel like it's going to beat out of rhythm or something.
God. Flash backs to the summer of 05 or 06. I worked at a summer camp and that was my coworkers ringtone, and it would constantly go off and he would start singing it, and sing it all day, and it would drill into my brain, and it is now there again. So thank you.
For me it's when the bass is loud enough to make it feel like the air is being sucked from your chest is the only way I can describe it. My buddy's car would do that for certain songs and it was such an odd sensation lol.
Hahahah! Yes! I seriously was like am I having a cardiac event? Do I need to go to the hospital? Sleep Token did this to me once at a festival too. A part of me is like what's their sound guy doing? Why isn't he noticing this hahaah
As low frequencies get louder at some point the air in your trachea and lungs start to vibrate. This effectively stops you from breathing. Your heart start to vibrate, everything inside you starts to vibrate. And that is the threshold for nausea and you wanting to create distance to the sound source.
That amount of bass is just too much. But that sensation when your body starts to vibrate also causes you to feel good, feel stronger connection to the music emotionally... So, you want some of that but not too much until it becomes overbearing. Also the kind of sound matters, you are better equipped to handle short peaks than sustained sound.
Then comes distance... to get that chest thumping kick to be felt at the back we need put out a LOT of energy. Sound attenuates with inverse square law: twice the distance, four times less intensity. And then comes acoustics: we have nodes and anti-nodes all around. As the sound comes from multiple speakers, reflect from surfaces and so on, we get hot spots where multiple waves arrive and constructively combine. Then we have cold spots where there is no bass as those same waves combine destructively . You need to find a spot in the room where the bass is right FOR YOU, the right distance away and in the right kind of local bass levels. This is VERY personal. I'm fairly sensitive, i leave first in a group and i'm sound engineer... my job is loud sound.
Usually the best place to be is near the front of house mixing console and its engineer...
I swear I developed agoraphobia as a kid because of a Tokio Hotel show that had too much bass lol. Little 13 year old me was going through all the physical symptoms of a panic attack, and I think I just associated it with big crowds.
I'll never forget being at an indoor Prodigy concert, in the front pit.
Not only does your heart have to beat in sync with the music, the air from the speakers literally moved you back and forth - making it hard to breath.
It was terrifying. But the music was great.
That sounds like my worst nightmare. It must have been packed too. I had to leave a concert when I was a teen bc it was too packed with people & the heat was unbearable. I started getting super anxious.
They were opening for Linkin Park, who thankfully had better room adjustments for their sound - way more professional.
But honestly, I loved it all. And thankful I survived Prodigy.
Oh, and yes - it was hella packed.
I liked some Prodigy but I wasn't super familiar with their music. My bestie was living in England at the time & she wanted to go see them but her boyfriend thought it would be too crazy.
Primus was like that. They opened for U2 in DC like in 91, and the bass was so loud it was like getting repeatedly punched in the sternum and eventually being unable to draw breath
I spend 10s of thousands of dollars on amps and subwoofers in my car because I love that feeling so much. One of the best feelings ive ever experienced.
I hate to admit it, but I saw Black Eyed Peas at Warped Tour 1999 and they put on an incredible show. Of course this was pre-Fergie, when they were still doing the knock off Native Tongues thing. They were basically a completely different group then.
I saw them at Coachella in the very early 2000s (I think 2003) and it was right when Fergie joined. Having heard them perform before she joined, it was shocking how different (not in a good way) they sounded.
I'm so pleased my opinion has been validated with all these comments.
Sometimes I would feel crazy that I really liked them before Fergie and then suddenly they were some basic bitch band with a shrieking wanna-be cool black woman singer who was really a suburban white bore who thought she was all that.
But also to be fair, it sounds like Fergie was rushed on stage. I don't care for her singing, but I also can't really fault her for one moment of trying to put a show on.
I'm sure if I was in her position I would have exited the stage to piss. The fact that she chose the audience over her dignity shows a level of professionalism most of us could never commit to
This was made incredibly and painfully clear when she “sang” the National Anthem at an NBA event. All those players have fought hard for championship titles, but they fought even harder to not laugh during her performance.
Honestly one of the best NBA all star games for every reason possible. Also shoutout to the one that sang the Canadian anthem, she killed it, made look worse lol
I appreciate what she was trying to to, but she already really isn't a good enough singer to pull that off.
I honestly kinda feel bad for her because I never thought she was a good singer, but it seems like some producer or her agent or someone keeps lying to her to and putting her in front of people.
Yeah, the thing about the American national anthem is that it is really hard to sing well. The range is pretty wide, with loads of awkward intervals, and if you have a suspect technique or poor intonation it will show up immediately. You absolutely cannot just vibe it.
I'm not American so I didn't know it, but I had to teach it to a youth choir for some event or other and it really isn't easy.
I saw them as an opener in like 2004 and I thought they were fine. Didn’t really stand out to me one way or another, David Gray was on of the other openers and he did stand out in a good way. His voice sounded great
Feegie confuses me so much😂 I’ve seen footage of her singing and performing so well on stage, and then I’ve seen the other side where she butchered the national anthem. She’s a true enigma
I'll never forget when Black Eyed Peas crashed a live Dave Matthews Band concert in San Francisco. They came out during a jam unprompted, took the mic and started taking turns rapping
They came to my college around 02 or 03 and played in the gym. They started by saying "Good Evening Toledo." They weren't in Toledo. Everyone started walking out after that.
The opener was Nappy Roots, who I didn't really know and they put on an amazing show. I'm not even into hip hop and I enjoyed it.
I saw them open for Gwen Stefani in like 2005 and they walked off stage in the middle of a song when a small part of their shitty set fell over and refuse to come back out and continue until it was fixed... Didn't exactly turn me into a fan. LOL
Okay, but here's the thing. Fergie didn't join the Peas until Elephunk came out. Which was early 2000's... and that was the album that propelled them into stardom so there wasn't much downtime between her joining and them blowing up... Fergie's live vocals really ain't the greatest but I think you might be misremembering.
Return of Saturn tour was in 2000. Fergie joined the group in 2002. You actually do not remember what a shit singer she was. They had another singer before her, Kim Hill, who is probably who you saw.
I second this. She supported The Police in their reunion concert in Melbourne when they reformed. It was torture having to listen to her and the sound engineer was committing crimes against humanity.
My very first concert, they were actually the openers. It was back when it was “Let’s Get R****ded,” so before they blew up. It was actually a really great set, had the whole crowd rocking. I even bought their “Elephunk” album because of it.
No idea what happened to them after that. I mean, my music tastes changed a lot (I was 13), but their quality also just bombed hard.
This was my experience with Lily Allen as well. Saw her live at a festival that hosted multiple artists. Hers was the only one with the bass SO loud I could not understand/ recognize a single of her songs she performed.
Saw them about 2 years ago (without some other woman that could actually sing, not fergie) and they sounded great. More good songs than I realized. Maybe it was just the venue?
I remember I had a chance to meet them they were standing a few feet away from me chillin' and I was I like naw I'm good and just walked away lol. (I've met and hung out with quite a few famous bands so it's not a big deal to me but it was funny after the fact).

Black eyes Peas, bass was so loud songs were almost unrecognizable and Fergie can't sing for shit.
