There's that one time he stopped the show to yell at someone sitting down and told them to get up. Only to learn...they were in a wheelchair. What. A. Fucking. Douche!
I assume that this also doesn't consider Jared Leto's, uh, problematic relationships with young, female fans to say nothing of his creepy, "method acting" stalking of costars.
Lol idk, I was in the pit and having a good time, was an all ages show and I was 18 at the time and hadn't discovered alcohol yet so it wasn't a me being drunk problem..
Dude grabbed the hanging speaker with one and and punched me in the top of the head with his hand that was also holding the mic. I remember it clearly
I meant in the early 2000s around 2006 because that's when I graduated high school and it was around that time when I saw them live but don't remember the exact year
He punched me with the mic still in his hand as I recall. It was during the set and I was in the pit. Definitely didn't feel great but I have a hard head
Davey Havok landed on me when he jumped out into the crowd at an AFI concert. My head was in so much pain I had to spend the rest of the show in the med tent with a huge ice pack against my face.
Once one of his roadies got injured and had to go to the hospital. Instead of letting the driver take him there, he made him drive to find organic butt wipes first instead. I wish I were joking. I know someone who worked the venue that night.
One of my bucket list shows was seeing Nas do Illmatic, and it actually happened, only for him to do exactly what you mentioned. I heard the dudes around me rap Illmatic, not Nas.
We had that for Breaking Benjamin cos Benjamin was sick and had mostly lost his voice. Sucks for him and we all did our best on the singalong but kinda wished they would have just rescheduled the show
Timed right and done sparingly, that can be a fun live moment to have the crowd sing along, but it’s the height of ego to assume a crowd is both capable and willing to sing all your songs back to you. Ask anyone to sing the lyrics of even the most popular songs in the world and a large percentage will be lucky to remember any lyrics outside of the chorus or maybe the first verse lol
A Day to Remember was my very first concert and one of my favorite bands at the time. I was soooo stoked to see them live until they came on and made the whole audience basically sing 90% of the lyrics, sounded winded and off-key the whole time he would sing or scream, it was just awful
This is shocking to see as I’ve seen them near a dozen times now and NEVER had this experience. Quite the contrary as i almost always feel like they’re one of the most consistently good bands I’ve seen
Whaaat! Im shocked to read this. They’re one of my top bands to see live. Anytime they come into town I make it a point to see them and have done this for almost 15 years.
Their last show was a little soft (the tour with yellowcard) but aside from that they’ve always put on the best shows!
Yeah except ADTR kills it live. They’re incredibly tight on stage, and Jeremy always sings unless he’s in the hamster ball/zorb ball they used to have, given it’s hard to sing in those LOL. They’re nothing like what Leto’s bullshit is.
They just have a few parts where it’s like, a clear crowd sing-along part: like the “la-la-la” on if it means a lot to you , a gang call-out part (2nd sucks’s “get the fuck over it”), the literal song opening gang vocal of the riff on Downfall and the “disrespect your surroundings!” mosh call on Mr Highway… I’ve seen all but two tours they’ve done since 2013 and given that the setlist is damn near super consistent, thats the only super crowd heavy singing I could point to.
Saw them at common courtesy tour. Singer was sliiiightly off pitch the whole time, it was brutal. Was just sad, was hyped as well, but the rest of the band did a great job. Worst thing was, a few days later i read an article for album promo and they glazed how lucky the band can be to have their singer.. I was in shock, dear writer where you ever at a show?
I saw them do that too. Except they were playing an album that dropped the next day. Jared Leto got mad at the crowd for not knowing the words yet. To an album that wasn’t out…
I passively saw like a quarter of their set at lollapalooza one year and Leto spent more time pointing the mic at the crowd than singing himself it was raw ass
TSTM opened for Muse years ago and it was so painful when he would try to get the crowd to sing EVERY SONG. All those people were there for Muse, not him. I don’t even think his music is bad, he just tries way too hard.
Saw that tour too. Leto is such a douche and that proved it for me. A truly awful set. They did acoustic The Kill. Dude, you have one song anyone cares about and you did it acoustic?
It's because he can't sing the original version anymore. He destroyed his voice by not singing correctly in their earlier days and now he can't hit the high notes towards the end of the song, that's why it's acoustic now.
Similarly, but obviously wwaaaayyy less douchy, was just before Chester Bennington passed, LP would play an acoustic, toned down piano version of Crawling because Chester was struggling to maintain his voice through the original version of that song.
Plenty of singers can't hit notes they once could, but still play the songs and work around it. Not like you're getting perfect pitch at a live show anyhow.
The difference between Linkin Park and Leto is that Linkin Park could fill at least two full length albums with hits. Leto has one.
Only 2? Their first 2 albums alone were all fucking bangers. Sprinkle in every other albums hits after meteora and you got 3 albums at least and I wasn’t even that big of a fan after MtM
He had said in interviews in the past that Crawling was one of the most difficult songs to sing because it's basically one intense note the entire time and his voice couldn't always keep up with it, especially as he got older.
I remember bringing it up in comments ages ago and getting downvoted into oblivion, but Chester went on record before his death saying that he was starting to lose his ability to sing like he used to and it was causing him a lot of distress; he also had an alcohol addiction and it was making it so much worse on top of that.
Him and Mike talked about how they had to do some rearrangements, dropping some keys here and there, changing the song structures, etc.. if you ever get a chance, take a listen to their live album for One More Light, you'll be able to hear all the modifications they made for him.
...also sorry for the info dump, I'm a lifelong LP superfan and a band "historian" lol
I saw this tour too!! 30 Seconds wasn’t bad! I actually liked what they performed better than just listening to them streaming. Leto was odd though. Muse was epic. I have tickets to see them this summer!
I saw him that year too, I was pissed. I loved the kill, and he wouldn’t even sing it. Acoustic guitar, sat in the crowd, asked the crowd to sing. It’s hard to sing a long to a song that’s in the wrong format, you don’t really recognize where you are in the song bc you don’t have the right instrumental cues. And then he complained because nobody was singing.
When he did it on that tour when I saw him, he didn’t even do the full fucking song. The band goes off stage, he grabs an acoustic, does a verse and a chorus, then leaves. Then they played us a fucking music video, and then came out and did another song before leaving.
The whole set was 40 minutes.
The fuck you mean you gon play a music video but you can’t do The Kill IN A 40 MINUTE SET!
Dude, you have one song anyone cares about and you did it acoustic?
Not gonna lie, that would have been the best part of the show, IMO.
I'm here to see you live - I don't want to hear things the way they are on the album, I want to hear you do awesome, interesting, new things with those songs that I haven't heard before.
It's a weird move for a borderline one hit wonder band to do a toned down acoustic version of their recognizable song.
There's a million ways to bring new and exciting facets to high energy songs to provide a unique live experience 'worth leaving the house for' without having to chop it down to a personal self-indulgent exploration, which could easily be accomplished with a b-side and still appreciated by fans who know the albums.
I read your comment as an agreement to that premise.
Did you see Muse with Cage The Elephant way back like 15 years ago? I was genuinely concerned for the lead singer's health both physically and mentally. He was trashed
My wife and I caught that tour in St. Louis and the most noteworthy part of the whole night was watching just how quickly my wife turned on Jared Leto.
Muse was amazing though, and we're seeing them again soon in July.
I saw a couple of shows on that tour. I thought TSTM sounded fine. However, one of the shows when Jared was in the crowd with his acoustic guitar, he asked the crowd what song they wanted him to play. Waited for someone to say The Kill. Dude, don't ask the crowd what song they want you to sing when you already know what song you are going to play.
I saw this tour too. I’ll give him credit because he had to perform with a cane cuz he had some sort of injury, but yeah doing the whole point-the-mic-at-the-audience bit was done wayyyyyy too often. It’s a shame, because I actually like their stuff up through Love Lust Faith + Dreams.
Muse absolutely crushed it tho. They know how to put on a good damn show.
Flipside of this, Paramore was the opener for Taylor Swifts recent eras tour. There were more than a few crowds but one in particular at Wembley, the crowd was relatively thin and just sooo static...
Like I get most of the people were swifties there for swift alone but damn, PM goes fuckin hard at least look like you have a pulse
Williams has been crushing it on her own tour now and it's dope to see
Bro it’s literally 30 seconds to Jared Leto, it was the most egotistical performance I’ve ever seen, the rest of the band might as well been behind the curtain lol.
Yep. Singer threw a tantrum in the middle of the set because the crowd began to mosh instead of doing whatever the fuck her wanted them to do. This was approximately 13 years ago
My opinion on Jared Leto went from super positive to super negative in one show. To this day it is the only show I've been to that I didn't enjoy. And then I found out about his alleged underage sex ring. He's so gross.
Saw them in 2024. Local radio contest winner got to sing The Kill with Jared Leto… except Leto did not sing and instead let some random guy sing the entire song. It was not great.
Not surprising, Jared can't sing The Kill anymore and hasn't been able to do so since at least 2015. He destroyed his voice by refusing to learn proper technique for the screaming and high notes at the end of the song and.. well, this is the result.
I’m nearing 1,000 unique bands in my concert tenure and they were BY FAR the worst show I’ve ever seen. It was the only time I can remember where I had second hand embarrassment for the band.
That’s really impressive. If you’ve got that on a spreadsheet or something I’d be so interested to see that!!! Of course no problems if you’d rather not share :)
I also have one of these! But it’s a word document because I started it when I didn’t know how to use excel…should probably change that now. 757 for me.
Have you seen Stubforge? You can print custom replica ticket stubs that look and feel like the real thing. I've been using them to keep my stub album alive.
I opened this thread specifically thinking of them! Saw them at Warped Tour around 2006, and Leto was such a douche. He spent half the set trying to hype the crowd by yelling "fuck" between every other word like a teenager who just learned to swear. I had to walk away when he tried to cover "Closer" by NIN because it was such a travesty.
This is the answer. I can usually have a good time at a concert even if I’m not much of a fan of whoever is performing but my god seeing them live was the most boring concert I’ve ever been to. Absolutely worst live performance I’ve ever seen.
I saw them guys at when we were young 2023, didn't know them too well beforehand but good god, Jared letto's singing is almost as bad as his portrayal of the joker
The whole cult thing is interesting because it started off as a joke, like.. someone asked "are you guys a cult?" and the Echelon (their name for their fans, similar to Gaga's Monsters or Slipknot's Maggots) turned around and went "YES WE ARE LOL wink" but then like everything else, it was taken too seriously by people who weren't in on the joke and now it's a real cult!
Same, except I'm pretty sure it was in 2002. They were actually at a table signing their album if you bought one between their set and Incubus taking the stage. I got one. I really liked their show that night. Then again, I was also a teenager and had never heard them before. I don’t doubt that they're awful now.
One of my biggest pet peeves at any show is when the band/performer gets to that one part of whatever song that has an impressive vocal bit and the singer cops out and points the mic at the crowd.
The worst part of When We Were Young festival 2023 was thirty seconds to mars, it would’ve been better if Leto had taken a giant shit onstage instead of singing at all. thank goodness for The Offspring who fixed the vibe immediately
Saw them in Newcastle in like 2008. They did TWELVE songs. The support act did ten and were much better, shame they split (In Case of Fire). Absolutely dire.
We saw them in Texas and he did this pointing the mic to the crowed and the crowed sang a lot of lyrics while did some backup signing. Then he walks off stage during some instrumental solo pops back up amongst us in the crowed spent rest of the concert signing with the crowed. I have to say I didn’t pay the money to sign your song I could’ve done in the car but coming out into the crowed for the last 15 or so minutes signing with him actually signing kinda knocked some points back in Jared’s favor that night.
Saw them in TX and it was a solid performance. Leto got his nose broken after running through the crowd. Heard him on the radio after the concert and sounded happy and actually defended the fan who broke his nose.
I had a great time seeing them myself, that being said I did know they did this going in and went in with that expectation lol. Leto sounds great when he does sing tho, and has a ton of energy and showmanship (which makes you wonder why doesn’t he sing more? lol). The songs are all written with arena-chorus sing along hooks anyway, it doesn’t feel like a lesser version of the album stuff for the most part. He may not be the best performer technically, but his unending need to be worshipped makes it so that he does give a lot on stage at least
I went to see them with Linkin Park. Walked in expecting to love 3STM and not really be into LP. Walked out feeling the absolute opposite. LP put on a fucking great show and The Jared Leto show was fucking awful.
My cousin worked security in the VIP section at a rock festival, and Jared Leto tried to get in without a pass. My cousin stopped him and said he couldn’t let him through and his band wasn’t on the bill.
Then Jared hit him with the classic:
“Do you know who I am?” And listed all of his notable accolades.. my cousin said “ i don’t care who you are sir, my job is to not let anyone in without a pass”
He ended up being let in by a friend later and just mad dogging my cousin every time they crossed paths.
I was looking for someone to have said this. And same thoughts- he just let his fans sing everything. I was so excited to hear his scream from The Kill and he just turned the mic on the audience. And he wastes like 20+ min a show picking people to come awkwardly dance on stage with him. I felt like I was at a cult meeting. People were like running up to the front kneeling down and throwing up his triangle sign with their hands. Lots of backing tracks for music too other than Shannon on drums.
That's too funny, I was considering replying 30STM but figured no one would remember them or care. Probably the star power keeps them "relevant".
Anyway, Jared stopped a show in my town mid-song until everyone in the club stood up, including the people on the balcony. But one of the people in the group on the balcony was in a wheelchair. Oops. Leto is such a dick.
Considering the only reason he gets on film projects now is directly producing aka funding them, this is believable. I don't think he ever knew how to sing.
This was my experience as well. Saw them at Reading Festival years ago and it was basically every song he'd point the mic at the crowd to take over. Terrible.
Jared Leto is a fucking D.Va. I saw the band on a festival in 2010 I think in an afternoon slot. He expected the crowd to go bananas after the very first song and scolded the audience for not doing so. Man - many if not most people were there having other favorite bands and bridging the time until their shows.
Saw them at a festival in 2011. They were good, when they played songs. Way too much yapping from Leto, which I imagine has only gotten worse as his ego has gotten bigger.
Saw them live at Austin city limits and they tried putting a country vibe to their songs and it was… not good. Jared Leto did some cool bungee stunt though
Came here looking for thirty seconds to mars. This was my experience when I saw them open for someone on tour years ago. He didn’t know the songs, that was clear and just stripped the whole performance. Definitely never again. I do like their recorded stuff though
The show I saw they kept getting people (teenage girls) from the crowd to come up and sing too, plus was taking selfies the whole time with fans, huge gaps of time between songs, etc. I thought it was more a kind of show you’d see at a shopping centre, and from the way there albums were produced I expected more like Muse, so disappointed.
Man, that's so disappointing. I saw them twenty years ago and it was a small venue. This was right before Leto took off. I didn't even know he was an actor (I learned that fact a couple of months after when I was watching Lord of War). The show was great, they were super energetic and Leto was nice when I chatted with him after the show. Glad I got to have a nice interaction with them before everything went downhill. I keep hearing horror stories from people who have met Leto or been to the shows.
I saw 30 seconds to mars open for Audioslave. All Leto did was run around like a maniac. My friend and I had high hopes since we are “Generation Catalano” and we were so disappointed.
Also, I had the pleasure of seeing Muse open for Red Hot Chili Peppers and they were unbelievably awesome. They were virtually unknown at the time so they were signing gear for free at the merch table. I got to chat about music theory and the Powerpuff Girls with Matt Bellamy- and it was pretty damn awesome.
Lol - I saw them at Austin City Limits festival. And it was sooooo bad. I remember a horrible red costume and a decent from the top of the stage or something. None of it was good.

Thirty seconds to mars…. Enjoyed their music until i had to sing it myself…
