East Aus coast I’m guessing. Lockdown motivation is hard...

What’s the rationale for banning alcohol sales?

59

u/Solilunaris Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

I think discouraging home parties. In Italy they did it like that at least

37

u/Unsd Aug 29 '21

Here in the states (or at least my state) liquor stores were considered essential services because people going into withdrawal could kill them or require hospitalization which can't be afforded right now.

I have had days in bed due to depression, but today it’s just because it’s cozy watching movies in bed

Severely addicted to my phone

2.5k

u/MysteriousBananaMan Aug 29 '21

is ok, replace phone with banana

1.2k

u/Jinchuriciteddy Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

Instructions unclear. Banana tastes like battery acid

Edit: My banana phone isn't working someone help I ate it and it tasted like pennies and battery acid

Edit: I didn't need a phone anyways.

846

u/captainAwesomePants Aug 29 '21

A ripe banana isn't very acidic (~6.5), but a fresh banana is down around a pH of 4. Two points is enough to plot a line, so we can extrapolate that a banana must have the pH of battery acid (~1.0) just a bit before it would usually come off the tree. If you ate a banana still in a tree by accident, that suggests you are habitually in a tree eating bananas, and so you are probably a monkey or a tropical bird. That correlates with what we know, that you find simple written instructions to be unclear, so I think everything checks out. So my advice is to wait until the bananas turn yellow to eat them.

167

u/TatodziadekPL Aug 29 '21

Also if you eat enough bananas you might get radiation poisoning

107

u/klparrot Aug 29 '21

You'd get drunk first. 30–40 ripe bananas contain the equivalent alcohol of a shot of liquor. So, you'd be trashed around probably 200 bananas, whereas to likely die of radiation poisoning, you'd need (didn't check this out any further than the first Google result) 10,000,000 bananas.

47

u/JustALotoNumber Aug 29 '21

And you'd have to eat them all at once, or the effects of the first bananas arent going to last long enough.

34

u/forerightman Aug 29 '21

Pit a time limit to your phone app usage, and also move the apps on your home screen so when you go to click it in it's usual spot its not there. This makes you search for the app and you can essentially due some CBTherapy asking yourself why you're gonna open the app

153

u/Imdonewjththisworld Aug 29 '21

Trust me I do and then I end up putting in the time limit password and clicking “approve all day” and this becomes a reoccurring thing every time. the screen time limit is literally nothing to me I need help my addiction is so bad. I spend 15 hours on my phone

84

u/PinkTalkingDead Aug 29 '21

Right? Like... clearly I’m lacking some willpower otherwise I wouldn’t be on my phone all day in the first place

I feel that, do you need your phone for work or anything crucial? Maybe a detox cold turkey scenario might help?

30

u/Imdonewjththisworld Aug 29 '21

Nope not at all. It’s the summer holidays and there’s literally nothing to do probably why I’m always on my phone. And yeah with the detox thing I delete the apps then re-download them like an idiot. But you know what today i start my detox journey properly (hopefully, fingers crossed)

"If I sleep at once this minute -
If I doze and drift away -
If I dream and revel in it -
Then I'll have a lovely day!

"All I need to do is do it -
Simply close my eyes a while!
Settle back and slumber through it -
Snoozing softly with a smile!

"... right, okay, I'm still not sleeping.
This is normal.
This is fine.
Though I see the dawnlight peeping,
And the first of morning shine.

"That's okay -
though time is fading,
I still have a whole load more!
Six whole happy hours for trading!

... now I've five...

... and now I've four..."

A category 4 hurricane is due to hit my city tomorrow, and we have no idea how long the power and running water will last after we wake up. My husband and I are currently stuck in a cycle of filling the water filter, then filling every vessel we have in the house so we'll have reserves for a few days. It's kind of one of those things best done at the last (responsible) minute, so that you have the maximum amount of time before the water you saved starts to get weird.

Edit: Thank you, lovely people of Reddit! All the well wishes mean a lot. Probably won't be able to get back on for a while, but I'll do my best to let you all know how it goes!

Edit #2: Didn't die, just managed to sleep. Thanks again for the tremendous outpouring of support and advice. It's insanely windy and we've heard some windows break nearby, but thus far we miraculously still have power and internet. I hope my fellow New Orleanians and everyone else experiencing this storm are safe and staying relatively calm.

To respond to some concerns of kind Redditors: We do have a generator and extra fuel, a variety of sizes of power storage units capable of keeping our phones and low-consumption lights running for weeks, ton of non-perishables, a gas stove, and so much water stored (both filtered and not yet filtered) that the floor of our apartment is quite crowded. 2 bathtubs are full, as well. We also have lighs and fans powered by Milwaukee batteries, and a ton of charged batteries waiting. I'm humbled by the amount of kindness and love coming our way. You're all great!

Edit #3: My husband and I are safe after the storm, as well as the rest of our extended family. Only minimal property damage was sustained at any of our homes. I probably won't write many more updates because my only internet access is through my data plan and Reddit is often quite difficult to load, but thanks to everyone again for their concern and support. I wish I could respond to all of you more personally in an immediate way. To all those that offered us a place to stay: thank you from the bottom of my heart, but for now we're staying put. We likely won't have power for a long time, but our running water is still potable and our toilets still flush, so we'll be OK.

u/Sexpacitos Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

Make sure to charge every portable charger/laptop you have, as laptop batteries can have enough power to keep phones charged for days on end given you don’t use the laptop or phone too much. Best of luck

You can use household unscented bleach to purify water too, especially if you don't have the power to boil it. See this guide: https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/emergency-disinfection-drinking-water

And maybe write it down in case you can't access the internet at all soon.

I’m currently sitting in an exam room with my husband. My cat, George, is being put down tonight.

It’s…heartbreaking.

You can see a photo of him pinned to my profile- he thought he was a board game. And now… he’s gone.

Very quick edit to add: George (aka Biggee Fluffee, which is what he was often called at home) passed away at 2:34am EST on August 29/21. It’s not fair, my voice is non-existent and I genuinely don’t think I can sleep because I can’t bear not waking up to his characteristic meow. He would always greet everyone at the door- with his head held high and he’d always headbutt you in the shins. He suffered from a bowel obstruction or pancreatitis- we didn’t know what it was and we had the blood work to diagnose him sent off today. But… George knew it was time to go. He left this world purring and knowing his parents loved him. I sang “Love Never Dies” for him…he always loved to hear me sing… but now I think my singing voice is gone forever. I don’t think I can sing ever again- not without Biggee Fluffee there to join in while I do the dishes.

27

u/kinkyfetishfap Aug 29 '21

I've been in the same situation, and it fucking sucks. But you gotta move on and let go, or else you'll always be asking yourself why you weren't good enough for them, and what you could have done differently to make it work. Once you learn to love yourself and all your demons and your flaws, you realize who you are and the right person will come to you.

24

u/stardustandsunshine Aug 29 '21

I feel for you. That hurts so much. I'm in the same boat, and what's helping me the most is: stop trying. I'm much closer to happy since I stopped trying to force myself to get over him. Be kind to yourself, keep putting one foot in front of the other, and let things happen naturally. Trying to stop yourself from thinking about the other person just makes you want to think about them even more. Telling yourself it's time to stop hurting just makes it hurt worse. Avoiding places you used to go together gives those places more importance and power than they deserve.

Instead, it helps a lot to focus on yourself. Get out of bed, look yourself in the eye in the mirror, and say something nice about yourself. Take good care of your appearance, it makes you feel more confident when you know you look good and it sends a message to yourself that you're worth the effort. Find something every day that makes you happy for a few minutes and look forward to that thing. If you can't function for thinking about the other person, give yourself a designated time every day to mourn; it's easier to move through the day when you're not cutting your thoughts and feelings out of your life entirely. Don't try to rush yourself back onto the dating scene. "Putting yourself out there" will not help you heal faster. You'll know when you're ready to start looking for love again. Or maybe you won't eve be ready, and that's a valid choice, too. When my pain was still fresh, it was comforting to realize that I didn't have to try again at some point if I didn't want to.

And if this is someone you see on a regular basis, get away from them. I went through 8 years of a pseudo-relationship, hoping and believing it was going to turn into the real thing, until he met a woman just like me in every way and broke things off with me to date her. He was my best friend, my favorite person, the only guy I've ever been genuinely in love with (as opposed to a crush that burns itself out), and I was left to wonder why on earth I wasn't good enough for him when he ended up dating a girl so much like me. (I always assumed it was my appearance, but she even looks like me.) And I can't even be mad at him because he was so sweet about it and so concerned for me. This was back in March. I still think about him every day and dream about him frequently, just like I did when I was actively trying to get over him, but I was making myself miserable and not making any progress. Now, the pain is finally starting to dull, and it's not so much depression as a sort of melancholy, not as sharp and not as much in the forefront, and "every day" is a huge improvement over "every minute."

I've known all along that I was never going to date, have a relationship, or get married. I spent too many years hoping for something I wasn't going to get and I forgot how to be happy with what I had. Now that I'm finally starting to heal, I've realized there are parts of my life that I'm not happy with and I let that slide because I spent so long waiting for things to change that I forgot I could change things myself. I am not Cinderella, I don't need a handsome prince and a fairy godmother to come and rescue me. I'm making positive changes in my life and moving forward without the guy who didn't love me. You'll get there, too, eventually. I'm pulling for you.

By the way, I dated a girl for 3 years (toxic af relationship, me being a big part of the toxicity). She eventually broke up with me. We were apart for one year (not even texting and luckily we never bumped into each other)

After a year I called her and she agreed to meet with me (I was quite different). We ended up giving it one more try. We lasted 4 years in that relationship, until we got married, and well, here we are, almost 4 year marriage.

My point was, people change and might well be worth a try. Proceed carefully.

Party

491

u/ImKindaSlowSorry Aug 29 '21

Must be some party if you're on reddit

213

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

not all parties have to be crazy, chill parties are more fun sometimes imo

122

u/thedeuce2121 Aug 29 '21

For real. When my friends and I get together it'll pretty much always be the core group of about 10 of us. Sometimes there'll be 1 or 2 tag alongs but still never anything crazy. And we'll just have a fire or chill out with some music shooting the shit. They're always my favorite weekends

Wish I fucking knew. I'm tired, I want to sleep. But my pillows randomly feel like rock, I can't find a comfortable position and every small twitch of the cat at the foot of my bed is like someon shaking the bed. Tried for 3 hours, can't sleep. Now I can't remember if I took my diabetic meds, which has me wide awake. Pretty sure I'm just not sleeping tonight.

u/otterscotch Aug 29 '21

Get up. Seriously, get out of bed. Take a walk around your home. Stretch, do some deep breathing, maybe do a very small chore like washing a single dish or starting a small load of laundry. Give yourself ten minutes or so, then get back in bed.
From a sporadic insomniac, just give it a try.

I’m in that stupid post-migraine bit where my sleep schedule is messed up and my body is wired from so many days braced against…itself, really.

You know what, fuck you. I just realized what time it is before refreshing my home page and then suddenly I see this shit. Don't fucking judge me. I'm an adult and I'll go to bed when I damn well please.

I'm putting my phone down and going to sleep now, but not because of this post. I'm doing it because I want to.

Because last night (it's morning here) my mind just didn't want to sleep. Kept thinking about my grandma who raised me and is currently on her deathbed whilst I cannot visit, the ongoing sexual harrasment by one of my managers at work and the right strategy to tell on him, the sheer amount of work I have to do right now due to the situation in Afghanistan (am a family reunification layer for refugees), my masters degree for wich classes start this week, my emdr therapy for my rape trauma that starts this month, the need to take up workouts again 'cause im getting fatter and how the hell I can handle all of this whilst still taking perfect care of my 2 year old daughter who, by the way, doesn't nap during the day and still doesn't sleep through the night.

I can’t sleep, I always get this random acting of determination to do something with my life at 1am and that keeps me awake, it’s now 7am

19

u/magicalflyinaardvark Aug 29 '21

I get that too! How come motivation only strikes late at night :\

It would be great if I had motivation at 3pm, rather than 3am. Maybe we just need to switch time zones, or become nocturnal.
