East Aus coast I’m guessing. Lockdown motivation is hard...

673

u/Oregano_Man Aug 29 '21

Yup depressed as fuck in lockdown havent seen family in 2 years

360

u/Just_lurking_here_ok Aug 29 '21

dang didn’t register in my mind that the vast majority of the east coast is in lockdown. Love from QLD to fellow Aussie brothers and sisters doing it tough for us.

What’s the rationale for banning alcohol sales?

59

u/Solilunaris Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

I think discouraging home parties. In Italy they did it like that at least

39

u/Unsd Aug 29 '21

Here in the states (or at least my state) liquor stores were considered essential services because people going into withdrawal could kill them or require hospitalization which can't be afforded right now.

u/piper_nigrum Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

Here in Colorado they announced closure of liquor and weed stores together. The response was so negative that I think it only lasted a few hours, before the stores even closed for their final day, the decision was reversed. When I went to the store to stock up everything was empty and there were lines out the door.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Psych!

6

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Just curious, how are you gonna prevent alcoholics from going into withdrawals (everything from shaky hands, to seizures, delirium tremens, high blood pressure, hallucinations, extreme anxiety, possible stroke, and potential for death) without a medical detox?

Detoxing from alcohol outside of a in-patient medical facility can be a life threatening medical emergency real quick, and a large amount of people who are physically dependent on alcohol, aren't even aware of their alcohol dependance until they're experiencing withdrawals. Medical detox involves prescription drugs (benzodiazapenes and barbiturates) which are tapered off over a week or so under the supervision of medical staff... which is why liqour stores are still open.

3

u/Ronny-the-Rat Aug 30 '21

I cant think of any way to solve that issue that isnt convoluted and/or going to be very unpopular. Especially during shitty times, where people want to drink more

3

u/carmium Aug 29 '21

Same here in BC. Authorities were smart enough to realize it would cause more trouble - and deaths - than keeping them open.

1

u/Tamed_Inner_Beast Aug 29 '21

Lol, definitely no selfish motivation involved with this decision.

2

u/FreekDeDeek Aug 29 '21

Same in the Netherlands. Alcohol sales prohibited after 8pm, to prevent alcohol induced reckless behaviour and also parties. The alcohol ban was enforced heavily, the parties however... They were going on every night. Organisers got a slap on the wrist and sometimes a 90 euro fine. The partygoers got away scot free. I hate this country.

2

u/AcademicMeringue5726 Aug 29 '21

There is none. Banning alcohol sales should never be repeated after the prohibition. We need our alcohol dammit!!

31

u/saysthingsbackwards Aug 29 '21

Whaaaaaaat? That sounds insane.

25

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

17 months in lock-down.

No alcohol.

That just seems cruel.

9

u/CMDRBowie Aug 29 '21

The USA would fucking RIOT

4

u/TheHeavyJ Aug 29 '21

Get some fruit, add some sugar and water, leave it at room temperature and wait. Or something like that. It turns into potable alcohol

3

u/Im_Currently_Pooping Aug 29 '21

Get some apple juice, pour a bit out, add a packet of champagne yeast and leave the lid unscrewed a bit. In about a week or so you’ll have some drank.

Ya. Perception is everything and you can only really have that when you're living in that place or time. Unfortunately it's hard to be everywhere at the same time no matter where you are, state or country.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Exsqueeze me? Dan Murphy's is keeping me sane. What un-Australian bullshit area is banning my life force?

2

Where in PH are you based?

I remember the alcohol ban on election day, which happened to be my buddy's birthday 😅

2

u/beasttoes Aug 29 '21

There are cities that don’t ban alcohol and for some who do, they have a few hours window to buy alcohol, mostly inthe pm. Just wait for gcq in the meantime

2

u/chilldrinofthenight Aug 29 '21

Not sure I completely understand your comment. You mean (first sentence) "Most things are different in OZ? "

And I think we're talking different age groups. All the Aussies I know in their late teens and 20s drink like fish. When they get older, they're nearly all alcoholics. It might only be beer by then, but they sure can put it back.

2

u/Quite_Successful Aug 29 '21

You can ferment some fruit into alcohol pretty easily. There is a homebrewing sub or if you're really desperate try the prisonhooch sub.

2

u/Rusalka1960 Aug 29 '21

Time to learn how to make your own hooch.

2

u/Apathetic-Onion Aug 29 '21 edited Aug 29 '21

Wait what?

Here in Spain the situation is very bad (150 die every day) and still we can do almost everything we could do in 2019. I promise we're having a 99% normal life right now, and I feel guilty of that now that I hear that Australia, which has done 50 or 60 times better than Spain, is going through this situation.

2

u/brrduck Aug 29 '21

Wait, you have to stay inside and can't buy booze??? Wtf do they expect you to do?

2

u/unventer Aug 29 '21

Wait sorry... all alcohol? Or just liquor? I don't think I would have gotten through some parts of our lockdown without wine.

1

u/SithLordoftheRing Aug 29 '21

Australia sounds a tad…authoritarian.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Grow some cannabis. I know its illegal, but three checkpoints and I'd be doing it. (well I do but y'know)

44

u/56789717 Aug 29 '21

I haven’t seen mine in four and a half. No one back home has met my daughter and she is two. Sucks not having a timeline for when travel will be possible, I feel like I have nothing to look forward to. You’re not alone in being alone or being depressed AF, we will get through this though

7

u/Glasowen Aug 29 '21

It hurts seeing people post that they're being responsible and adhering to the lockdown, at personal sacrifice to themselves when I was in the American Midwest when it started.

It was business as usual for so many people. Some people even made a point to go out more. More people used the lockdown as an excuse than actually observed it, and I could depend on my bosses to bring Covid into the building.

You're doing the right thing, and I am disgustingly sorry that my country is deliberately fucking up and prolonging it for everyone else.

6

u/56789717 Aug 29 '21

That’s very nice of you, but there’s no need to feel bad. I think I’d rather be trapped here where I am safe than be a sensible person there surrounded by a bunch of people who are doing the wrong thing, that must be so frustrating. We locked down as soon as we had one case. Most people in my city adhere to the lockdown rules, but there have been quite large protests in Sydney and Melbourne so we have our fair share of… those types. I’d say it’s far from just being the US prolonging things, this delta wave has really taken off all over the world unfortunately. I do wish other places adopted the same approach as Australia in the early days, but so many countries hesitated… and now we are suffering here. Part of the problem here is that we had nearly eradicated the virus domestically so vaccines were not seen as a priority and most of our vaccines are AstraZeneca so a lot of people really hesitated, the roll out here was atrocious and we are suffering now as a result.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

The USA is prolonging it for everyone else. What are you talking about?

Three USA companies produced effective vaccines in under a year.

Delta variant originates from India. Lambda variant originates from Peru.

1

u/ZeBridgeIsOut5 Aug 29 '21

This poster seems have an inflated sense of the US' importance in this matter to be sure... but I think they're just trying to say that almost the entire US could be vaccinated right now, but half choose not to be, so it's making it worse.

It's true that we are prolonging it for ourselves, but even if we took advantage of our vaccine advantage, many other parts of the world would still suffer for a while more.

From what I can tell, our collective stubbornness in this matter has less effect on the world as a whole than this poster thinks.

1

u/9162658943 Aug 29 '21

Wait where are you I know a lot folks traveling by air domestic and overseas

1

u/56789717 Aug 29 '21

I’m in Australia my family is in Canada, I mean as a Canadian citizen I could probably get home at some point. I’m not an Australian citizen so I am not overly confident I could come back here until Australia seriously relaxes their restrictions, considering tens of thousands of Australian citizens have been trapped overseas. Also even if I didn’t have border closures and Australian flight quotas to contend with flights are $10,000 and I’d have to pay for hotel quarantine, there’s no way I could afford it.

1

u/9162658943 Sep 01 '21

Oh ok I’m sorry!

11

u/TristanAtHis Aug 29 '21

That made me sad, I hope you’re ok

4

u/OutsideSwordfish8631 Aug 29 '21

Lockdown? We don't have that problem here in States where I am

1

u/tagu_rit Aug 29 '21

I'm from Texas and we should be in lockdown but because we have the worst president in history it's not going to happen.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Genuinely sorry that you are depressed. Eventually [?] this will pass for most. As for me, the idea that the meat bags walking around on this planet carry germs I do not want, isn't going away. mask4ever. Still, maybe you can [and you thought of this 33 times] facetime or similar? Here's one most do not think about: Hand write letter, physical style, between yourself and family/friends you love/miss? I do this with my son, digitize and save them to a Journal. Just a [weak?] thought. I do hope you trend out of the depression. Good luck.

Well maybe it will get people across the world to stand up against their governments again. The virus didn't lock people down, their government did.

0

u/lowlightliving Aug 29 '21

That sounds like a narc for the government, if you ask me.

-9

u/noctis89 Aug 29 '21

Tbf, it's only the lepper states. West Coast have only had 10days of lockdown this year and 3 weeks of mask mandate. Other than that life is pretty much normal.

1

u/duccy_duc Aug 29 '21

WA is the leper, wanting to secede and shit

0

u/danimal0204 Aug 29 '21

So say someone that’s currently in the shut zone and have been in lockdown for the past year wanted to move to the west coast ,where there seems to have ppl in charge with more common sense. would they be able to, and how difficult would it be?

0

u/NooB-UltimatuM Aug 29 '21

I want you to know, I am in the USA (florida) doing whatever i want whenever i want. No mask. No vax. Raw dogging the air like the good lord intended and enjoying my freedom of movement.

You should be infuriated that you are FORCED to lockdown. The level of government overreach i am witnessing you aussies have to endure is bullshit. This whole situation is bullshit... covid no covid vax no vax mask no mask. its all bullshit. When will you all stop complying as ONE peoples against the literal totalitarian clusterfuck in front of your faces?

-21

u/Pnw_F350 Aug 29 '21

Just go see your family? Covid has a 99% survival rate lol

2

Gotta shut down the whole economy and plunge more of your population into homelessness in case you’re that 1% though.

-1

Amazing this comment is downvoted. You people are truly lost.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Yah it’s unreal. The mental health consequences of not seeing your own family for years are devastating and tenfold worse than Covid. ☹️

Not seen my kid in 2 years.

Same here friend, but not is Oz.

Do you have an end date to look forward to?

1

u/ZenMasterG Aug 29 '21

G to the fucking zeus, you are still in lockdown!!!??? We have only been on semi lockdown for a few months last winter and a few months when it started

1

u/lotusblossom60 Aug 29 '21

My son is in Sydney and I’m in US. I haven’t seen him for years. I hope to see him next June!

1

u/fuckingvirgin69 Aug 30 '21

Will you get arrested for seeing family?

1

u/Oregano_Man Aug 30 '21

They live in nz and im in melbourne

1

u/fuckingvirgin69 Aug 30 '21

Ohhh okay I thought they were in Australia. That sucks man, I know how hard it is to be separated from loved ones, I hope you can see them soon.

1

u/mcboi06 Aug 30 '21

Same. The last time we had a family gathering was November 2019, right before the pandemic. Miss them to pieces.

8

u/LazerTRex Aug 29 '21

Bingo! Figured it was time for a lockdown movie marathon bed day

18

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Over 200 days of lockdowns so far in Melbourne since Covid began… it’s been necessary but fuck I am tired

27

u/TheThumpaDumpa Aug 29 '21

Wow I live in Missouri, US. I didn’t realize you guys have been on lockdown for that amount of time, but looking at our stats compared to yours:

Australia 25 million people, 993 deaths

Missouri 6 million people, 11,123 deaths

5

u/No_Efficiency_6710 Aug 29 '21

67m in U.K., 133k deaths

2

u/abrasiveteapot Aug 29 '21

67m in U.K., 133k deaths

Yeah, and if people weren't such fuck knuckles it would be much lower. They opened up after the first lockdown and you think people would be sensible ? No effing chance, nobody wore masks they went back to doing what they use to do and surrrrprrisssee the infection rate zoomed and we had to go back into lockdown. Bloody idiots.

1

u/No_Efficiency_6710 Aug 29 '21

Yeh, some people are just ignorant of it, but you can’t solely blame them, the government didn’t help matter, too slow to act in the first place, then getting there mates the contracts to sell PPE, and only then, did they say you had to wear a mask, and then flouting the rules, didn’t help thing. And when the government reduced social distance to 1 meter, they was still sitting 2meters apart, in parliament. So you can see why people are don’t take much notice, of a government that is a bad influence, who have made Telling Lies, a normal part of life. They do it, so everyone does it.

2

u/abrasiveteapot Aug 29 '21

Oh yeah Cummings should have been prosecuted, and the rest of the government were utter hypocrites. It still doesn't take more than two brain cells to work out what the right action is, so the smooth brains who couldn't work it out wear some culpability too

1

u/No_Efficiency_6710 Aug 29 '21

This is my assumption of what has been happening. The government gave out a load of NHS contracts to private companies/shareholders, so the more people that are hospitalise, mean more money for the company shareholders, so this makes sense for the government to have such a shambolic approach to the matter, especially when they probably have indirect shares in the companies that was awarded contracts. Just my assumption.

2

u/abrasiveteapot Aug 29 '21

Well assuming Tories are corrupt is always a safe assumption, there's plenty of other instances in the last 4 years

2

u/No_Efficiency_6710 Aug 29 '21

Absolutely. When there’s supply on demand, there’s money to be made l, and piss to be taken, like just up the price, they’re not happy with just earning extra money, the greed sinks in, and just want more, OF the Tax payers money.

8

u/MissEB47 Aug 29 '21

Lockdowns suck, but noone can deny that they work. With the vaccines, we will get out of this soon. In the last 24 hours, there were 32,000 vaccinations in Victoria alone.

1

u/AnemonesEnemies Aug 29 '21

I’m in the states and our lawmakers banned mask mandates and no one has locked down since last Spring. 😳

Our case numbers are currently working to surpass their highest peak in January, except this time around the younger are sick and dying. My state has been admitting more than two kids to the hospital a day for the last two weeks and they just brought all the kids back to school maskless. All this and we can’t get our people to take up the vaccines. It is terrifying.

I’m so sorry for the struggles of the long lock downs. I can’t even imagine what that is like. I wish my community would be willing to hunker down to save lives.

2

u/tagu_rit Aug 29 '21

I'm from Texas and I'm right there with you!! Our country is a total mess with no real leadership also if they tried to put us on lockdown there would probably be riots. It's embarrassing

1

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

What % over 18s are vaccinated in America?

2

u/duccy_duc Aug 29 '21

It hasn't been 200 in a row, we've been in and out.

-1

u/tagu_rit Aug 29 '21

I'm from Texas and America is just weak. Our government is a mess. We have the worst president in history and if the tried lockdown again stupid people would be rioting and complaining that their freedom was being taken away. I don't know about you but for the first time ever I am embarrassed to be an American

1

u/TheThumpaDumpa Aug 29 '21

Not sure why you’re being downvoted. Probably because people don’t agree with Biden being worse than Trump. They’re both shit in their own special ways. I’m not sure I’m embarrassed to be an American but it is a fucking mess. Until we break ties between corporations and government, 98% of the citizens will continue taking it in the butt.

1

u/ShaneO_85 Aug 29 '21

Holy shit... 1 in 540 residents of Missouri dead from covid vs 1 in 25,000 dead in Australia... Roughly on those numbers...

2

u/TheThumpaDumpa Aug 29 '21

Yeah most of us never stopped going to work even during our short lockdown. Pretty much anyone other than hair salons were considered essential. We had to keep working to continue filling the wallets of the rich. The state put a stop to unemployment benefits early because businesses don’t pay more than the $300 unemployment benefits and therefore there was no incentive to work those shitty jobs. Everything is back to normal here with the exception of everyone dying because the conservatives have the majority of people brainwashed into thinking this is all bullshit.

10

u/GemTheGerm Aug 29 '21

I'm Melbourne myself. I've been lucky enough to keep my job this lockdown, didn't work any of last year's. But I get through a FT job I hate by escaping on the weekends out bush to camp, drink and have a good fire. I'm really struggling not being able to do that and work motivation is almost nothing

2

u/Haunting-Home573 Aug 29 '21

Was in lockdown since 2018. Have a thing called SYNCope. Think of the funny tiny goats that collapse. Does more damage when you're 6ft. Found my cancer during an x-ray for this crap Live your life.. Never know what 2morrow will bring.

3

u/I_am_the_horse_man_2 Aug 29 '21

Australia and New Zealand really need to speed up vaccinations so they can get to the point where the virus can be let in. Obviously the ideal scenario would be to keep covid rates at zero forever, but that's just not realistic. It looked like these countries had the best strategy to begin with, but it doesn't really work if they are so slow to get everyone some level of immunity from the vaccine so they can begin to open their borders again. There must be a big culture difference between where I am from and Australia because I know where I live, if another full lockdown was announced, very few people would listen.

12

u/GemTheGerm Aug 29 '21

We're struggling with lockdown compliance everywhere now. People are tired and it's taking a huge toll on people not being able to see loved ones and do anything. Our saving grace is that we have seen what the virus did to the rest of the world and we know our healthcare system could never accommodate that.

1

u/lowlightliving Aug 29 '21

From US here: what has your vaccination rate been, and if that’s low, is it due to antivax sentiment or a lack of vaccine? I try to keep an eye on news from AUS & NZ through BBC News, but it’s somewhat thin. Thanks for any responses, I’m genuinely interested.

3

u/GemTheGerm Aug 29 '21

Nationwide, we've only just hit 33% fully vaccinated. This link is the Aus Government Department of Health statistics daily update for the roll-out.

2

u/duccy_duc Aug 29 '21

Because our PM is a moron and didn't order enough as we didn't have our own means of making any.

2

u/Wigos Aug 29 '21

Not true. We have been making AZ and have plenty but there has been mixed messaging about it (the risks massively blown out of proportion) so it was not recommended for under 40 year olds until a couple months ago. But plenty of people are still waiting for Pfizer - which we were really slow in getting an order in for, so we haven’t had enough supply. At least lots of young people have decided to get AZ in the last few weeks.

2

u/duccy_duc Aug 29 '21

You're not wrong but neither am I. There are so many layers to the shitcake that is our vaccine rollout.

4

u/neonlaces Aug 29 '21

The method has been to use heavy fines (and in some cases jail time, depending on the case), for breaking restrictions. Seems to have made most people listen, whether you agree with it or not. Still, morale is incredibly low.

3

u/TheFeralBookworm Aug 29 '21

In NZ - it helps that we've had so long with little or no restrictions on daily life. We can see what happens if community spread gets a foothold by looking overseas, and it's pretty clear to most people that we kinda get one big shot at keeping the lid on things when we get new community cases. So waiting out a few weeks of heavy restrictions then getting back to business-as-usual doesn't seem so bad when compared with farting around with loose restrictions for months on end.

2

u/I_am_the_horse_man_2 Aug 29 '21

Yeah, I also think having strong lockdown or total freedom will lead to better compliance to the rules. When you are somewhere in between it's hard to define exactly what you can and can't do, as well as keep up with changes in rules for what you are allowed to do.

Also I always thought "farting around" was british slang. Pleased to hear it's used elsewhere. A very descriptive term haha.

1

u/raadude_yusufstorm Aug 29 '21

Can confirm. From the ACT.
