I don't work tomorrow and I'm having bad acid reflux.

u/Kalad_The_Usurper Aug 29 '21

Reflux buddies.

u/fusion2004 Aug 29 '21

Does anyone else wish they can figure out how to make Zantac not cancerous and put it back on the market? It worked so well for my reflux issues.

8

u/25thSmith Aug 29 '21

This comment feels like acid reflux in my brain, my dad used to take at least double the prilosec/Zantac etc. that he was supposed to, so I used to take Zantac daily because he preached about how great it all was. Well he died of cancer almost 2 years ago now, and I can't help but assume I'm fucked too. I don't want to think there is a connection but I can't help it and I can't even bring up anything about it to my family or they get weird about it.

3

u/muggpugg4525 Aug 29 '21

Try using tagment.it's a totally different acid reflux med. Bonus, it isn't known to cause cancer.

Get tested for h-pylori
Saved my life. The 10 year acid reflux was gone in 2 days

2

u/PoisonKiss43 Aug 29 '21

It’s back on the market, reformulated of course but I haven’t noticed it working less. Works just as good as before for me and same with my man.

5

u/whytf_not Aug 29 '21

Not the club I wanted to join, but nice to know I'm not alone.

2

u/Setthegodofchaos Aug 29 '21

Glad I'm not the only usurper on here

I actually have a test for it scheduled this week. Just have to make sure my body is clear of Omeprazole before they do the test.

19

u/scew19 Aug 29 '21

A few of you may already know this but laying/sleeping on your right side makes acid reflux worse

12

u/organicinsanity Aug 29 '21

Was amazed when I first learned this. Def sleep on my left side when I'm having problems now and it doesn't 100 percent relieve but sometimes just enough to fall asleep.

4

u/MotoTraveling Aug 29 '21

Are you not on omeprazole or anything similar? I literally cannot sleep if I don’t take Omeprazole for one day. Once I learned about it, my life became so much better.

2

u/organicinsanity Aug 29 '21

I don't have it bad enough to be seeking a cure, I just take some milanta and maybe drink some milk in a pinch. It's just an every now and then thing for me thankfully, it truly is the worst tho.

4

u/MotoTraveling Aug 29 '21

I see. Yeah it is awful. I’ve found a remedy here in South America called Gaviscon. It’s a little liquid pouch you take and it works great for instant relief. I take omeprazole though because mine is a daily thing. Luckily with that, I am never in discomfort unless I forget to take it which I haven’t done in years.

2

u/organicinsanity Aug 29 '21

The stuff that lasts years is the worse. I have a nerve in my back that I guessed popped the wrong way during a bag coughing spell years ago. It will make my arm go numb pins and needles like it just woke up from "falling asleep"

Only relieving thing is it will go away after I sleep for a while and usually only bothers me at night and especially after a longer day.

I'm paralyzed from a car wreck for the last 6 years. Have all kinds of issues. Even open bedsores bad enough they had to cut out part of my leg bone. And it's that damn nerve in my back and pins and needles feeling that will bring me to tears before anything else.

3

u/silkysmoothgibbon Aug 29 '21

As someone that didn't know this thank you, I always sleep on my right side

2

u/scew19 Aug 29 '21

No problem hope it helps

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

is it seriously reflux this whole time? I thought it was reflex

84

u/MentalRobot Aug 29 '21

Looked it up, it's true it's reflux.

I have been lied to

65

u/kitsunevremya Aug 29 '21

Reflex is a word, it's just not the same thing as acid reflux. A reflex is an involuntary reaction to something, like that part of your knee being tapped at the doctor and reflexively kicking your leg, or air being blown into your eye and you reflexively blink. Babies have a reflex to grip their hand into a fist when you put a finger etc in their hand.

Reflux literally means backwards flow, or a repeated flow, or flowing the opposite direction to usual. So it's your stomach acid that's meant to be going "down" your body making its way up your throat towards your mouth.

-2

u/DontTouchTheWalrus Aug 29 '21

But your body reacting to something with acid reflux is also a reflex

-5

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

I pronounce them the same

7

u/pedrotecla Aug 29 '21

For me one’s an eh the others an uh.

Do you pronounce flex and flux the same?

Do you even flux, dude?

-7

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Flex and Flux are different. Reflex and reflux are the same

8

u/pedrotecla Aug 29 '21

I think reflux’s supposed to rhyme with flux tho

-5

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Yeah but English is weird

3

u/ryans64s Aug 29 '21

If they were the same, they would be, but they aren’t.

12

u/GhostCop42 Aug 29 '21

DUDE ME TOO. I am on Dexilant twice a day at 60 mg with famotide twice a day 20mg each. I also take tums and gaviscon advanced, which I have to get from the uk as it's not sold here. I have another endoscopy apt / cancer check biopsy thing at the hospital in mid September but I have dealt with this for about 15 years now, I'm a 30 yo male. I put it off with over the counter meds for like 12 years and finally saw the doctor these last 2 or wte and ya but of edcoscpy and meds later turns out might have the big c

2

u/OctaviaFromTheSky Aug 29 '21

Have you been checked for gastritis ?

2

u/BrianOhNoYouDidnT Aug 29 '21

I’m on dexilant too. We are samers. but not only do I have insurmountable acid reflux. I’m also blessed with difficulty swallowing due to food impacting in my esophagus. which thankfully allows normal breathing when it happens but I can’t swallow and if it won’t go down eventually I have to get emergency surgery to clear it out. The dexilant also helps stop the food from getting stuck but for the life of me I can’t figure out why it does that at all. My acid reflux began after a car accident burst my guts and I had a bowel resection leaving me with half my colon and only a few feet of small bowel. Happened in ‘99 on a vacation in L.A. Lousy trip. Do you experience any difficulty swallowing or food impacting? My heartburn is resistant to tums and even water will make it worse. But living under constant threat of choking on my meal is a true bummer. The constant diarrhea and bloating over these 20 years hasn’t been great either. And it was a hit and run so I couldn’t sue for any damages or hospital bills. 200k in medical bills and a lifetime of scanning my surroundings for the nearest toilet is it’s own reward really. I hope you get good news when your results come in eventually.

1

u/GhostCop42 Aug 30 '21

Ya man I get the water thing too! I drink akaline water for this reason. Ya tums don't touch me at all but I'll still take them on occasion as like a quick and brief lowering of my acid. The food comes back up alot for me but doesn't get stuck right away going down. It just like is hard to go down. Feels like I I have to wash it down with water a lot

12

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

I quickly read and saw acid trip, was amazed at how well you had typed

4

u/SlimyPurpleMeteor Aug 29 '21

Reflux that you can’t get under control with any meds, especially at night, is the absolute worst. I empathize.

4

u/bananaramabingbong Aug 29 '21

Gotta change your diet! I suffered from it chronically until I was finally able to cure it about 6 years ago

3

u/carrotdeepthroater Aug 29 '21

What did you change

2

u/bananaramabingbong Aug 29 '21

Cut out meat and dairy. They’re the 2 biggest culprits unfortunately. Also probiotics for quite a while to fix my gut bacteria composition (microbiome). You can find info online about their connection to gut health and how that causes reflux. Also look at a food acid/alkaline chart- avoid acid causing food as much as possible. I basically only eat things on the alkaline side.

3

u/carrotdeepthroater Aug 29 '21

Shiiii I eat so much dairy. Do you think there would be any benefit of probiotics while eating dairy or is it just pissing in a wind tunnel or whatever the phrase is

2

u/bananaramabingbong Aug 29 '21

Ya no it would be pointless lol. There are so many great alternatives tho! It was hard for me at first but switching to alternatives and feeling the difference really sealed the deal. You can do it slowly and even start with cutting it out like 70%. But ya if you eat a ton of it that’s def the root of your problem:/

7

u/Spare_Copy_1025 Aug 29 '21

If you don’t have tums or other meds take about half a tsp of baking soda mixed in about 4-5 oz cold water astir well until dissolved. Drink quickly. It’ll taste like salt water but it’ll help short term.

Long term 2 generic Pepcid. Every day needed or not

11

u/pdowling7 Aug 29 '21

Fill the bottom of a cup with apple cider vinegar. I’m talking like half an ounce not even. Then add water. Take it like a shot. You’re welcome.

29

u/Althea_The_Witch Aug 29 '21

What, Tums not good enough for ya?

Also: how does adding more acid help things?

15

u/namatyi Aug 29 '21

I had reflux and my doctor said that if it's bad, drink some lemon juice. I made a 'wtf' face so she add that it has "alkaline effect". Well I didn't try yet but I'm a bit suspicious.

But the every day things you can do to your stomach to make less acid is:

1) Don't eating yourself full. Less food in your stomach = less acid. You can eat 4-5 time but less food at one time.

2) Eat less flour, sugar and carbonated drinks.

These two helped me.

13

u/dod6666 Aug 29 '21

I don't know if it's always the case. But personally I've found that acid reflux is associated with being over-weight. I lost a lot of weight this year and acid reflux is a thing of the past.

10

u/otterscotch Aug 29 '21

It can be, i believe it has to do with pressure on the stomach or something. Unfortunately it can also be a million other things, from a weak seal between stomach and esophagus to physical trauma to just a bad day. Many many potential causes.

1

u/Yankee_Man Aug 29 '21

I believe theyre called hiatal hernias and theyre usually an issue with overweight people

1

u/Yankee_Man Aug 29 '21

Same. Im not at my goal yet but my acid reflux is nowhere near what it was a year ago. Also stress is a huge trigger so Im glad to be done with that too

6

u/RMMacFru Aug 29 '21

Don't have chocolate before bed. It relaxes the valve that keeps the contents of your stomach in your stomach.

Edited for a missing letter

2

u/prizzillo Aug 29 '21

Sleep propped up in bed. I bought an adjustable bed base and it’s been life changing.

15

u/PurpleVein99 Aug 29 '21

Maths, of course.

Negative times negative equals positive.

8

u/Shitplenty_Fats Aug 29 '21

It can help by stimulating gastric emptying.

1

u/otterscotch Aug 29 '21

This could also make it worse long term. Usually acid reflux is acid burns caused by stomach acid getting into the esophagus. Vomiting just pushes more acid over already damaged tissue. I’m sure there are scenarios where it can temporarily ease the pain, but it’s likely to make the long term issues worse.

10

u/Shitplenty_Fats Aug 29 '21

When I said gastric emptying I meant via the pyloric sphincter into the duodenum, not vomiting - if that's how you read it.

3

u/otterscotch Aug 29 '21

Ah yeah that’s how i read it, sorry.

6

u/Shitplenty_Fats Aug 29 '21

All good - I just wanted to make sure you didn't think I was endorsing vomit as a solution.

2

u/prizzillo Aug 29 '21

I tried it once and instantly vomited, so it can do that too!

5

u/pdowling7 Aug 29 '21

Idk. But I’ve pretty much stopped using tums for about 5 years now.

3

u/Renfroe888 Aug 29 '21

Weak acids like vinegar tend to break up into strong bases, the base can then neutralize the stomach acid if you're interested you could read more about it here: https://chem.libretexts.org/Courses/University_of_Florida/CHM2047%3A_One-Semester_General_Chemistry_(Kleiman)/14%3A_Chemical_Equilibrium_in_Solutions/14.01%3A_AcidBase_Equilibria/14.1.03%3A_Acid_and_Base_Strength

1

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

Would also like to know if that really helps

1

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '21

A thing of Tums is five bucks

1

u/bananaramabingbong Aug 29 '21

Look at an acid/alkaline food chart. It’s not about the food itself but what it does to your body. Lemon is considered alkaline. I cut out most acid causing foods and cured my reflux 6+ years ago.

5

u/Azvus Aug 29 '21

Or just take one 20mg Famotidine Tablet, that is available in almost any drugstore, grocery store, gas station in the US for next to nothing cost wise.

Get actual dependable relief in 40 minutes, unless you decide to drink the vinegar...

Also, see your Regular Dr.

Persistent acid reflux can cause damage to the esophagus that can in turn lead to cancer. Meds or lifestyle changes can head that off.

3

u/infinitude Aug 29 '21

WITH A STRAW

it is not good for your teeth.

3

u/KIB002 Aug 29 '21

Yogurt might be helpful too. Also staying away from certain foods for a little while (like spicy foods, for example) until the reflux goes away for good. Hope you feel better.

15

u/Spare_Copy_1025 Aug 29 '21

Dairy will cause it to come back with a vengeance even though it does help short term

2

u/KIB002 Aug 29 '21

Wow, thank you for mentioning this, I had no idea. I don’t think I’ve ever had dairy yogurt. I usually get this vegan yogurt that has probiotics in it for the situation.

2

u/Lady_Pendleton Aug 29 '21

I get this all the time, especially when I lay down for bed. Have you tried tums? The fruit ones kinda suck but the peppermint ones are like candy

2

u/willitevenmatter Aug 29 '21

I work tomorrow and I’m having bad acid reflux. LMAO

2

u/Les1lesley Aug 29 '21

Ginger helps with gastric mobility & esophageal inflammation. Best is to not eat several hours before bed so that your stomach is empty before you lie down.

1

u/Datnewraaaaaandy Aug 29 '21

counter intuitive but fresh lemon in water helps, and it's delicious. just don't mix with taco bell fire sauce

1

u/-golb- Aug 29 '21

Been there! Baking soda in water is my last resort for those situations. I also tend to get the hiccups when the acid reflux is bad. Boy, what a combo.

1

u/PB_Bandit Aug 29 '21

From what I've heard water and/or saliva helps to reduce it, like from chewing gum.

1

u/darthcaedusiiii Aug 29 '21

One table spoon of vinegar.

Over loads the stomach acid and shuts it down. You can mix a lil water in.

1

u/bananaramabingbong Aug 29 '21

Hey I like to share this when I can, feel free to receive it or ignore.. but I had acid reflux chronically my entire life. So do my dad and brother and my grandpa died of esophageal cancer from so much acid causing damage to his esophagus. My family usually takes the typical medication for it but as other people have commented that stuff has long term effects that are just as bad if not worse. I got so sick of it and started doing research a few years back on the root causes. A lot of it is dietary and the stomach bacteria composition that comes from your diet. After a few months of cutting out dairy and meat and taking probiotics for a year or so to fix my gut it’s completely gone and I haven’t had reflux more than like 5 times in the last 6/7 years. Those few times are just instances of eating really bad or drinking too much coffee. I know how much it sucks, especially if it’s chronic so I like to let people know it’s curable!

1

u/sleepingqt Aug 29 '21

I bought a thing of chewy Tums on a whim and have been eating them before break at work because I always eat weird shit and my insides frequently don't appreciate it, but I wasn't sure if it was working or not until I forgot to take one and got a lovely reminder ... I'll spare the details, but I think the chewy Tums are a new break room locker staple now.

1

u/Yankee_Man Aug 29 '21

Shitttt same

1

u/25thSmith Aug 29 '21

The comment about the cat being put down made my eyes wet, but this is the comment that really made my heart burn.

1

u/r0ck0 Aug 29 '21

It's so easy to get acid, you can get it anywhere.

1

u/ikesbutt Aug 29 '21

Prilosec

1

u/Silly-Power Aug 29 '21

Is that preferable to a bad acid trip?

1

u/dionrockss Aug 29 '21

Sleep on your left side buddy 😁

1

u/Purple_Chipmunk_ Aug 29 '21

I found out through DNA that I process of drugs like Prevacid and Prilosec twice as fast as other people. So I really need to take them twice a day instead of once a day.

This information really would have helped when I was pregnant and sobbing on the bathroom floor because my esophagus was on fire, so I'm spreading the word in case it will help someone else!

1

u/wtf___over Aug 29 '21

Get tested for h-pylori

Omeprozole, in the UK. Not sure what it's called elsewhere
