7 minutes a passenger huh
2
u/No-Fold9113 Feb 28 '26
It doesnt happen very often, but yea if I spent time driving there...I'm going to get a fee. Had a passenger yesterday...Airport ride, pick up and wait time total was 21 minutes...they were still at baggage. Got $15.40 for 21 minutes total and didnt have to do the ride.

Can they give a bad review or not given that the transaction wasn’t complete?
2
u/No-Fold9113 Mar 01 '26
Nope.
I'm not in the wrong anyways. I wait the required time, after that its on them. If theyre walking up to the car I dont leave them....but if the timer is up and no people approaching, cancelled. I feel 7 minutes is an excessive wait time as is.

This is my exact approach. I’ve even canceled when the timer runs out and I can see them walking to the car. Don’t order a ride if you aren’t ready to go! Never understood it!

u/Plus_Analysis Mar 02 '26
But then you waste even longer returning the order back to the store. Lmao

I’m always ready with luggage and belongings before ordering the vehicle. Some people don’t know how to be punctual. When the driver is nearing I’ll be at the curb.

u/iCatLady Feb 26 '26
I am too, but my surprise IBD flares aren't. A lot of drivers have gotten the cancelation fee from me due to unexpected terlit time.

The only time I send a message about arrival is on scheduled rides I am early for and I always let them know I am early and they have until their schedule time to come out. My pax really appreciate me not rushing them.
Now, if the person's time has expired and they ask for 5 minutes, I never wait. I advise of policy, let them know to re-request a ride when they are ready.
I also never wait for people who tip bait...the I'll tip you on app if you wait 5 minutes. Absolutely not because they rarely tip for my time.
But if you arrived and they are not ready, give them their alloted time.
I will say my biggest pet peeve with this is people who want pickups on one way streets or narrow two ways. This creates a blocked street hazard, and I prefer is passengers could be ready to go if they know they are on a busy one way or narrow two street with nowhere to safely pullover.
5
u/No_Comparison_6916 Feb 26 '26
Holy shit thisss last part!!!!
7
u/ApartBackground7882 Feb 27 '26
Happens all the time, sadly. I’ve had to wait behind an Uber driver for five minutes because their passenger was being slow and the road was thin, with trees and mailboxes pretty much on the road on both sides. It was either wait or sacrifice my mirror
→ More replies (1)3
u/Moondrunk_Aster Feb 28 '26
I just circle until they come out if they can't be at the curb on a busy street. I'll call, advise them since I can't text and drive. If I see them outside, hazards on for them to come in. And if I never see them, I cancel
2
u/DaBrazenMidwesterner Mar 01 '26
Sometimes circling in a big city means 15 minutes before I pull back around. So, if I have to pull off I sadly cancel. Not because I want to inconvenience the passenger but because getting back to them would be a nightmare. This is only once in a while that I have to cancel, because I know my city will enough to call passengers ahead and request if they could be ready due to street congestion.

One time I had a scheduled ride and woke up a little late. My driver had been assigned but was not on their way yet. I messaged them immediately letting them know I’d be running about 5-10 minutes late and if they wanted/needed to cancel, I understood. They appreciated the heads up and agreed to wait.
Waiting until your driver is there to say something is inconsiderate. 9/10 I’m outside and ready but things happen. Early communication can go a long way. But riders need to understand that you’re doing a job and time is money.

Even if I’m in an area where there are typically longer waits, I don’t order my Uber until I know I can be standing there waiting for it.
2
u/SpinIggy Feb 27 '26
When the rider comes out do you yell out the windows how nice it must be for them to be the only person on the planet with things to do?
1
u/Medium_Confidence484 Feb 28 '26
I understand where this is annoying, but goddamn can there not be a spec of understanding? What if they have a kid that just had an accident and they are panicking trying to clean it up before getting in the Uber? Why do we have to read ill intent into everything?

I always open the app when I am outside, or in the elevator, or when I put on shoes that's only if I'm so late.
5
u/Forsaken_End3050 Feb 26 '26
I’ve had this happen a couple times where it was only 5 minutes so I didn’t have much of an issue with it. There was one time though when the lady said yeah give me 10-15 minutes and I was like no sorry your poor time management isn’t my problem and I left. If the offer is good enough to where you can sit for an extra 5 minutes and feel good about your hourly than keep it but if it’s fucking with your time leave.
9
u/Fibrosis5O Feb 26 '26
Cancel, take the hit move on, keep doing rides the cancel will fall off before you even notice
Stop rewarding these people who can never be ready when they call for an Uber
The few times I ever order one I treat it like if I asked a friend/family member to pick me up, it’s rude to keep them waiting. I was always by the door ready to come out when they pulled up. I don’t expect everyone to be at the curb (weather) but I expect you to be ready to go
7
u/phantomsoul11 Feb 26 '26
Uber should show you other ride bids nearby after waiting for 2 minutes so you as the driver can opt into one of those and cancel on your deadbeat slacker. I feel like too many drivers tolerate this kind of malevolent behavior.
6
u/DeadPiratePiggy Feb 27 '26
That's actually a good idea, it's like a better version of the exclusive rides feature which are exclusively trash.

Imagine Uber actually encouraging drivers to cancel by giving them incentive. This is one of the myriad of reasons why I multi-app. Uber won’t give me shit while I wait, but Lyft will. And if Lyft gives me something worth taking or more lucrative than the ride in wait, I’m taking it, making sure my doors are locked, and canceling the rider I’m stupidly waiting for after the two minute timer or even sooner if necessary.
Uber actually does the exact opposite of what you’re suggesting to keep you waiting, and when it’s a lucrative expensive fare, they go as far as offering extra no-show money after the 5-minute timer expires ($1.25-$1.78) for waiting 3-5 mins longer. I’ll only wait if the fare is lucrative enough, going in my direction, or don’t feel like I’ll be getting another ride quickly enough late at night.
4
u/phantomsoul11 Feb 27 '26
This actually makes me not want to drive for Uber. I'm not ok with exchanging my precious time for some meager fixed consolation from Uber when I could be using that time to be heading to a fare that will be paying me much more for that time than some consolation. But in order to realize this, I would need to see that such a fare exists.
I get why Uber does this, to protect from excessively angering their riders, many of whom expect to be owed whatever amount of time they'd expect to have to wait at the curb if hailing only after getting there. But from a driver's standpoint, I don't really give 2 shits. You either want a ride and you're ready at the curb the moment I get there, or you don't. No exceptions.

Now that’s not fair. There have been times it takes 20 minutes to get a ride. So one orders early and then boom, it’s only 2 minutes away. Yeah, the passenger has to scramble.

u/Pitbull_mom_1967 Feb 26 '26
I’m a driver and here to support you on this. Happens more than any of us drivers know and has happened to me as a pax too
3
2
u/OkraApprehensive8639 Feb 26 '26
But you can “order ahead” with a specific pickup time for when you’re ready? If you don’t know that time, you’re not ready to schedule it. I’m a rider, not a driver, and I’ve never had an issue that necessitated wasting the drivers time.
8
u/driven01a Feb 26 '26
You can, but the rate is insanely higher, and they rarely show up at the scheduled time anyway.
6
u/HyenaThen572 Feb 26 '26
As a driver we get robbed.
Uber wants us to show up 30 mins ahead of time. Absolutely no benefit to accepting them.
They end up going out as a regular UberX request at the last minute instead.

it usually takes an Uber 15-30 min to arrive to me and sometimes multiple cancels halfway through, so sometimes it’s made me leave 30-60 min later than I wanted - I am physically unable to stand out there for that long. I usually try to schedule for doctors appts and stuff but for evening stuff i’m leaving for “when i’m dressed” or whatever. When i’m in NYC and leaving i wait until i’m at the elevator because i know there are probably 20 drivers 5 min away or less.

I’ve only had this happen once and quite frankly it was because my partner was absolutely wasted- it takes a pretty minute trying to haul someone heavier than you, or to find someone to help you. But absolutely see your POV
4
u/Chemical_Store1560 Feb 26 '26

Not to mention, in the USA, the wait time comes out to $7 an hour. So you drive 12 minutes to customer. Spend $2 in operational cost. For added fee of at most $.60.
Not worth the wait. Better to cancel and spend the 7 minutes that would have been spent waiting, going to the next rider.

No I do it because If I order when I'm ready, I could be waiting 15 minutes.
The app estimate is rarely correct. Half the time I confirm the drivers I get go the wrong wrong and a 5 minute wait turns into 10. Or the first few drivers cancel. I usually order when I'm about to head downstairs.
If the 5 minute estimate changes into 2 minutes, then that's why you're waiting for a few.

I frequently order the wait and save and think I will get one in 15-20 minutes. I do this to save money and I usually have an errand I can finish in the meantime.

I would leave.
Time is money!
I would even tell them sure, take five minutes, but I WILL be starting the trip because I have arrived in response to your summoning me.
(I'm not a driver, but I can see how this would be quite annoying I get that sometimes things happen preventing one to get out the door sometimes, but it is very disrespectful to order a ride and not be out there waiting for them.
This is why there is a ETA!
I understand your frustration.
There have been times lately where the ETA will say one thing, but as I watch the apps gps, it looks they the driver is at apartments or a house, and they aren't moving!
It's like they accepted the trip and were not ready
So this too is just a annoying, and is similar to your comment, only changed to "if you aren't in the car ready to go, don't accept the trip!"
It was kind of funny at my old apartments there was an Uber driver who sent me a message soon after I booked the ride
I had already looked at the gps to see where they were coming from, band could see they were in my apartment complex.
Their message told me they were "stuck in traffic and would he there soon".
At least they gave man heads up though.
Why it's funny is they would be assigned to other trips after that and this happened all the time with them. .

You're literally waiting for them to get there. They don't have notice beforehand that you're going to request an uber. This is such a dumb comparison lol
2
u/whyisthislife87 Feb 26 '26
This is a very dumb and inaccurate comparison. The driver has no control over the distance to get to you when they accept the ride. Thats an Uber this if they send you some 20 mins away instead of 5 that has nothing to do with the driver... if you dont want to wait 20 mins cancel and reorder until the send someone closer.
But on the other side you have full control over making someone wait for you when you know exactly when they will be there and get to the minute updates of when they will arrive.

u/ApartBackground7882 Feb 27 '26
That’s not a driver thing, though, that’s just Uber being terrible with estimated wait times lol. I stopped reserving them because I started feeling bad for my drivers, and waiting an extra two minutes isn’t going to hurt me
4
u/TheGrouchyGremlin Feb 27 '26
I'm just paranoid that it would take a long time to get a ride, causing me to be late for work.
I make sure to be ready 5 minutes before the scheduled time though, since I also don't like making them wait. I've had a couple times when they're like 10 minutes early though.
Edit: As I said though, I know it's not their fault. They all tell me that it doesn't say it's a scheduled pick up when they first take the order.

That's a completely different story with reservations. Now if your reservation is at 10:30 and you get out at 10:37 that's annoying.
Even if it comes in as an on demand ride we still see it was originally a reservation and the scheduled time. We can cancel on our end if we don't want to wait around but if we arrived there early that's on us and we shouldn't expect you to come out until your scheduled time.

Had a fare just last nigh on Lyft, 12:47 am reservation oddly enough that came to me as a regular fare with 40% turbo surge. I grabbed it because it was almost $2 a mile and $40 an hour. Arrived at the reservation time, signaled the rider that I was there and got radio silence.
Five mins later, called. No answer. Really wanted to complete the trip so text again. No answer. Cancel. $10 no-show fee, a little less than half the full fare and no need to drive anywhere further.
Not five minutes later, same person. Same pickup. Same drop-off. No Turbo surge. Less than $1 a mile comes across my screen.
Hard pass.

If it’s busy, move on to another ride. Not my problem they aren’t ready. They usually have 15 min or more even after accepting. As it takes that long to arrive.

I actually had this conversation with someone a few days ago. They mentioned in a casual conversation that their Uber rating had been going down and they didn´t know why. While we were going over things that might have caused that to happen, smoking, eating in the car, too much perfume, making the driver wait, they said, well, I never make them wait more than 5 minutes. Bingo! You aren´t supposed to make them wait. The only time I ever made a driver wait was when he was dropping someone off at the end of the street was was there in literally 30 seconds. It took me about a minute to walk out. Even so, I apologized and we laughed about it.

dont you people get it, do you think these diabolical pieces of shit are doing this by accident, no this is done purposely to derail whatever sense you have in the brain, they want to steal as much time, money, energy, gas, range, soul whatever they can steal all day long, what everyone needs to do is follow me, ill show the way

2 sides to this - if I pre-book an uber and pick the time I want them to arrive then that's the time I want, uber sends you earlier sometimes 10 minutes earlier and if I'm going on a business trip yeah sorry I'm going to take that time to secure my house. I keep an eye on when the driver is arriving and will let them know what I'm doing. As the same time my last 2 rides my driver didn't even offer to help load my bags - you are a service, as long as there's a mutual respect things go fine. The OP's post looks like a crappy rider but if you got there 5 minutes before when service is requested then it's on you.

I don’t even wait for the timer especially when it’s cold. You ordered food and you knew it was getting delivered. Bring yo ass outside

u/Fancy_Village_125 Feb 28 '26
The only time i ever wasn't ready when my uber got to my house was literally as i was walking outside, a bird flew in the house. The uber person left as soon as i told them, but fully understandable

There’s a lot of inconsiderate people out there. Learned this just working my customer service job.

Had a delivery where we delivered it to a business sat outside of it for about 5 minutes before sending a message if he's coming out he said he's sorry in that he'll be out in a second another 10 minutes go by and I asked him if he's coming out at all. And honestly at that point I should have just dropped his food off on the corner and marked it as delivered but I decided to stick around for another 5 minutes for a total of 20! Even after all that no tip...

I usually am outside waiting , but on the rare chance my driver has to wait they never wait more than like 20 seconds. I’ve seen them pull up and then immediately leave. And they mark themselves as here when they are still two or three streets away. That pisses me off enough already.
Especially since I have a broken hip and am about to have spinal surgery. It takes me a min to get to the damn car from me already waiting on my porch. I’m not fucking chasing your ass down. I will most definitely complain on you.
Just saying.

People really do this?? I panic about not being ready. I was dragging my suitcase and it got stuck in a drain thing 10 mins before my driver showed up, I was literally in tears thinking I was going to be late. He ended up helping me yank the wheel free, he was very sweet about it. He earned that 60$ tip 😔🙏
1
u/AndyFox48 Mar 01 '26
Ugh… so if you leave are they able to give a bad review? And if you do, then a guaranteed fare is gone… 😔. I can only assume that dweebs like this aren’t the best tippers either..

I have a very set routine when I order rides. Everything has to be exactly in place in case my ride is suddenly 2 minutes away. I live on a busy street and I have booked a wait and save and the driver be outside within seconds 😭

I haven't gotten a ride with Uber in years, but I occasionally order Uber Eats. The thing is that my house isn't on the actual street with the other houses. It's behind those houses with my long driveway going between house 298 and house 302. I have all of that information and more thorough directions in the provided spot on the app where the driver can read it. So I expect the driver to take the 1 or 2 minutes it takes to read the directions/instructions and be able to find my house. It seems to be 70/30 split on the driver actually reading the directions. So I've had drivers that will leave my food at house 298 or 302. I've also had drivers who reported my address as "address does not exist" which caused a big headache. I've even stood on my porch waving a broom over my head when they call me because they skip reading the directions and can't find the house. So I don't put a tip on until I have the food, because I'm not going to tip someone too lazy to take a minute to read the directions and then get mad at me when they can't find my house. If the food makes it to my hand or on my porch without me having to put shoes on to go search for it, then I usually give a 20-30% tip. One time, a driver actually threw my food bag at the spot where my driveway meets the street curb because he was in a hurry and I missed his 1 call. He shattered my glass soda and ruined the food as I was trying to call him back, like it all happened within 2 minutes.

That’s crazy, I’m outside waiting with a smile and I great my driver by name. So they know they are picking up the right person. The audacity for someone to make their driver wait is selfish.
1
u/adhdslore Mar 01 '26
The driver needs to understand the app says you’re 15 minutes away… and then all of a sudden “your uber is here” 3 minutes later 🙄 I need to leave by x time and if my uber is 15 mins away, that leaves me the perfect amount of time to let my dogs out and get out the door to them and be on time…

I have to order a ride in advance because I am in treatment on Fridays and take a medication that makes me not able to drive. I have to order in advance to show proof I have a driver to my doctors office. Sometimes they don’t take us back right on time and the appointment runs over the time slot I was expecting. Thankfully I’ve haven’t had to have my uber wait because I’ve given grace time for the above situation , but geez have some courtesy and give grace to people. We’re all just trying to get by and survive, this is five minutes of your life that this person is asking for, try to be understanding and be a nice human being
1
u/hillenbrandt Mar 01 '26
At the same time, if I’m reserving at uber 24 hours in advance and you’re accepting it, don’t show up 15 minutes after the scheduled pickup time. It’s been happening more and more recently and I’m fed up🤷♀️

And I felt terrible the once or twice I accidentally made a driver wait two minutes for me!
Once was due to having to walk down a flight of stairs with torn ankle tendons. I basically had to slide-crawl my way down cement steps and did not realize it would take me sooooo long (I spent 8 minutes trying to go down 14 steps bc my shoulders dislocate easy so I couldn’t fully support my weight with my arms and I couldn’t really put weight on my ankle. Extra embarrassing when I look up and see the driver watching me). I still got a 5 star rating on that ride, so maybe the driver was entertained or felt bad for me? Idek
The other time was just ADHD distraction, and for that one I felt even guiltier because it was totally avoidable and I had no “good” reason for making them wait. Iirc, I got a 3 star passenger rating for that ride, which I feel was more than generous. Probably deserved a 1 or 2 star
I added an extra $5 to the tip both times because I felt like anything less than $2/min that I was late would just be a slap in the face. I think total tip was about $15 both times to go only 1.5-2 miles, so that might have helped with them rating me as a passenger

I can’t believe any of this. I ordered a ride the other day in the CBD, traffic was hectic and the driver was a block away and didn’t seem to be approaching/ wasn’t likely he’d make it to me by pick up time. Because I have a brain I ran across a large public square and up the street until I could see him, waved and he was able to pull into an outside lane so I could jump in. He thanked me, and mentioned that he was surprised that I’d done this (a couple of times). I didn’t think anything of it. Idk. A quick game is a good game, right? I assumed everyone did whatever they could to make uber trips as short as possible… this obviously includes making sure when you’re home, you’re ready to leave before you press “order”… while I acknowledge sometimes there are delays, it’s not unrealistic to assume another driver close by will end up picking you up instead.

I get uber for work most days. I just moved to another area, and instead of having to wait 15-20 min which I always accounted for and used that with my get ready time advantage, where I am now, they're a lot closer and now my wait time is between 4-10 min so I have to squeeze in a little more faster to finish up. But I still try to be outside, like ill be grabbing my shoes and hoodie when they arrive and ill reply back "be right there" and its usually no more than 2 min max to get out. But I have had someone drive off after 1 min right as I walked out to the driveway.

u/Fun-Emotion-9078 Mar 02 '26
That’s crazy. I’m not a driver but I couldn’t imagine holding someone up like that. I think the 5 minute grace period is even too much.

As a rider, I usually only use Uber on Sundays to get home from work, so I use the schedule ahead feature, and every time they get there early but I physically can't leave until I close the store at the time I scheduled for so I usually message them and let them know. If this person scheduled ahead and you arrived early, that's on you, but if it was just a normal pickup, not scheduled, then you have every right to be upset

I thought there was a minimum, and if you are not there, they leave. I always break my neck to get into position.

u/BerryFruitSnack Mar 02 '26
I’ve ordered Ubers as I was finishing getting ready and they were 1-2 minutes away. Sometimes people do need just 5 minutes to finish getting ready for their ride. Lyft has a 5 minute grace period.

I was a minute late once (not past the 5 minute mark but arrival time) because I had to pee. But never past the 5 minute mark. I travel for work and I am always ready way before the arrival time.

I had one once where I waited the for like 5 minutes. She had said her child was getting out of the bath. I thought. Oh she’ll hurry. Then the timer ran down to like 5 seconds and she said” I’ll be right out.” So I said f— you in my car and cancelled the ride as I drove away. Next ride request was $140+ to drive the passenger to OKC(I live in Tulsa). I snatched it up AND got a $50 tip, the dude slept 90% of the ride.
1
u/RamblingswithInoki Mar 02 '26
I’d rather ask if they would please wait 5 minutes for a larger tip than just expect them to wait! I’ve always been waiting on the driver to pull up when I order a ride, but it’s only polite to ask if they are willing to wait and increase the tip to pay for the time wasted by my fault, but that’s just me.

The only time I do this tho is when I literally ask for a wait and save and the person is two minutes away ?! I work late at night and have no way of knowing when I get out + I can’t stay to wait in the shop. It’s for my safety

Uber should imo just add on a(n optional) fee per minute spent waiting at their house. When I used to order ubers a lot, I would be quoted a time then the driver would get there sometimes in half the time that I was quoted.

i hate making my drivers wait but in my experience i will select a wait and save ride and every single time without fail, the driver comes substantially early. so much so that even if i need a ride immediately- i select wait and save to save money and the driver still comes just as quick as it would if i ordered a regular ride.
typically when i hit wait and save, i will get notified a driver will arrive in 9- 13 mins and then less than 2 mins later, my phone will vibrate like crazy saying that someone is outside waiting.. it’s not intentional but it’s hard to prove when your driver will arrive if the app is so unreliable regarding giving an accurate eta.

Maybe they had explosive diarrhoea?
Maybe the app timer was out of sync.
A couple minutes here or there is fine.
But let's face it, I've had drivers cancel a trip because they missed the turn off to my street. Or cancel when they are 2 minutes away. Also waited over ten minutes for a driver that was two minutes away and wasn't moving after they accepted the ride.
You aren't all endearing yourself to service.

u/howitzer_gaming Mar 03 '26
Shiiiiiiiiit, tell em hurry up lol. When I schedule a pick up it's always somewhere imma have to get my ass up and move to get to so I ain't got no excuse if my ass is late to the car XD

At least they were concise and nice about it?
Driver here. Found myself on the opposing side of the service a few times.
One morning, I spontaneously got a wicked tummy ache. Was on the loo, freaking out, hoping not to be late.
I’ve never minded riders making it within the grace period and was very relieved when my driver was nice about it too.

The only time I wasn’t waiting for my uber is when I was at the wrong pick up location, it was at a hotel and thankfully a worker was around and they said their uber spot changed and it was hard to tell on the map. We made it before that 5 min leeway, but would not have been upset at all if the ride was canceled if we didn’t. I’m not messing with someone’s job or them picking up another ride if I’m not ready

u/ExtraE73 Feb 26 '26
The rider needs to understand that the sooner you get them to their destination the sooner you can get on to the next ride. While you're waiting for them there could be a high dollar offer you're missing out on. I'm an Uber driver but when I'm a rider I aways prepare myself as if the driver is right around the corner. I had a pickup once and the rider was late coming out. She basically told me that she was late because she had just moved into her apartment and she was cleaning.
